Alan Vickrey, the highly successful girls basketball coach who led North Central to consecutive Class 4A championships in 2004 and 2005, has decided NOT to resign his post at the huge Indianapolis school after eight seasons.
The 55-year-old former Brebeuf mentor told The Indianapolis Star that he wanted to spend more time with his wife and ailing parents. His career record stands at 389-194, and his teams have won 14 sectionals, five regionals, three semistates, and six Marion County titles.
The Panthers, who defended their 4A title in March after losing eight seniors from the year before, should be terrific again for Vickrey. The returning group includes dominating 6â??5â? junior center Amber Harris (19.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.5 blocks per game), freshman sensation point guard Briana Bass, and five of Harrisâ?? current junior classmates.
Lawrence North coach Jodi Whitaker, the 1985 Indiana Miss Basketball from Austin, told The Star the initial resignation was not totally unexpected.
“He’s a very good fundamental coach and a great defensive coach, and that’s why he’s been so successful,” Whitaker said. “He will obviously go down as one of the best coaches in Indiana history.”
