INDIANAPOLIS â??? The Class 3A No. 2 Brebeuf Braves used a big second quarter Nov. 12 to open their 2005-2006 campaign with a 51-28 victory over visiting Fort Wayne Luers.
After a low-scoring first quarter, Brebeuf opened the second eight minutes with an 11-0 run to jump out in front, 18-3. Freshman guard Lauren Meadows, who led the Braves with 19 points, hit three straight 3-pointers during the run to pace the offense. When the second quarter concluded, Brebeuf held a 27-7 halftime advantage after outscoring Luers, 20-4.
â??I was really pleased with the first half,â? said Brebeuf coach Kendall Kreinhagen. â??The second half, Luers made some great adjustments, which we knew that they would with the program that they are.
â??We didnâ??t do a good job the second half, but luckily we did have that great first half that really gave us the room to make the errors that we made the second half.â?
Fort Wayne Luers (1-1), which struggled offensively all afternoon long, was never able to get any closer than 15 points after making a 6-0 run at the end of the third quarter, when Luers outscored the Braves, 14-9.
Brebeuf held Luers to single-digit point totals in three of the four quarters.
â??I was really impressed with the way our girls came out,â? Kreinhagen said. â??I was proud of the girls, the way they worked and executed the things we have done in practice, and it carried over tonight to the game.â?
Taâ??Shia Phillips, the Bravesâ?? 6â??6â? center, also played well by scoring 13 points and collecting 20 rebounds.
No Luers player scored more than eight points.
