Colin's column: Dissecting "December Madness' and the Game of the Year II

For
high school basketball fans, it still
is the most wonderful time of the year. The days between Christmas and New
Yearâ??s Eve provide a plethora of tournaments around the state. No delaying
intro this week. Below is everything you need to know about â??December Madness.â?

This
weekâ??s top non-tournament games:

Wednesday:
Evansville
Memorial @ Lawrence North: Last yearâ??s 3A runner-up travels to Indy to face a
Wildcat team that has rattled off seven straight since losing back-to-back
games in November.

Heritage
Christian vs. Perry Meridian: A day before its date with South Bend Washington,
Heritage Christian faces a deceivingly good Perry Meridian team. Donâ??t be
fooled by the 4-6 record.

Big
tournaments:

Decatur Central (Wednesday):
First
round: Warren Central vs. Decatur Central, Indianapolis Tech vs. Avon

Outlook:
A likely championship match between Warren and Avon could provide the Oriolesâ?? first defeat of the
season. Warren
was held to 21 points in a loss to top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern.

Hamilton County (Wednesday through
Friday):
First
round: Fishers vs. Noblesville, Carmel vs.
Hamilton Southeastern, Westfield vs. Hamilton Heights; bye: Guerin Catholic

Outlook:
4A No. 1 Southeastern should have a relatively smooth path to the title if the
Royals can defeat Carmel.
HSE downed the â??Hounds Nov. 25, giving Carmel
its only loss this season.

Summit Conference (Wednesday through Friday):
First
round: We have no freakinâ?? clue â??? seriously. After scouring the Internet for
any semblance of a schedule, we got nada
â?¦

Outlook:
Three-time defending champion Fort Wayne Luers is once again the heavy
favorite. A likely title bout with Fort Wayne South would be interesting,
especially after Luersâ?? earlier victory that should determine the regular-season
conference crown.

Hall of Fame (Thursday):
First
round: Franklin Central vs. New Castle, South Bend Washington
vs. Heritage Christian

Outlook:
The second game of the day is perhaps a battle of the stateâ??s top two teams. A
victory by Heritage Christian, a 2A school, would surely send a message to the
IHSAA about the class system. The winner doesnâ??t exactly get a clear path to
the trophy, either. An evening game against New Castle â??? the more likely scenario â??? would
be tough in the Trojansâ?? monstrous gym.

Rumble on the River (Thursday through Friday):
First
round: North Harrison vs. Indianapolis Chatard, Franklin
County vs. Cambridge City Lincoln, Connersville vs. McCutcheon, Jasper vs. Southwestern (Hanover)

Outlook:
The most realistic championship game (Chatard & Southwestern) could help
Southwestern gain some respect down by the Ohio. There are a lot of things that could
go wrong before that, though.

Twin Lakes (Thursday through
Friday):
First
round: Rochester vs. Lebanon,
Logansport vs. Indianapolis Cathedral, Taylor
vs. Evansville Memorial, Western vs. Twin
Lakes

Outlook:
Any of the eight teams could win in this three-round battle of
middle-of-the-road-teams.

Ben Davis (Friday):
First
round: Anderson vs. Ben Davis, Plainfield vs. Bloomington South

Outlook:
Early game is huge as the Giants hope to capitalize off home cooking to ruin Andersonâ??s undefeated
season.

Random game of last week:
Lawrence Central 58, Indianapolis Broad Ripple 54 (OT)

In
a tough transition year, Bears get their first win of the season and snap a
39-game losing streak. From the looks of their schedule, it may be their last
win.

Last weekâ??s upsets:
Anderson
Highland 71, New Castle
68
Forest Park 52, Crawford County
42

Unbeaten watch:
Twelve
teams remain perfect, with half of those assured of carrying that into 2007. Class
A teams Bloomfield and Argos still appear the most likely to cap off
a perfect season.
