In semi-final action at the Na Menehune / Reebok Holiday Classic at Moanalua High School, the host Menehune hold off a late rally in the 2nd half to defeat the Owls of Mid Pacific 51-47. Moanalua will play in the Championship Game Saturday at 7:30p against Kamehameha.
The #9 Na Menehune got off fast in the first quarter with point guard Stevie Austin and super sophomore Marcus Monroe working the offense smoothly. Mid Pac would handle that initial surge and battle back in the 2nd quarter.
The Owls would really make a game of things in the 3rd quarter as Marcus Holyfield and company began to hit perimeter jump shots as well as get some transition baskets off of their defensive pressure. Holyfield, only a junior, is described by one opposing coach as a “legitimate D-I prospect”. So we will keep our eyes out for Marcus.
Key free throws and steady play eventually sealed the victory for the Menehune. They will meet a Warrior team that has already defeated them once on the Kamehameha campus. Head Coach Greg Tacon and his crew will be looking to event the record on Saturday.
