The Punahou girls and boys air riflery teams, under head coach Karen Finley, claimed the 10th Annual Civilian Marksmanship Program/HHSAA state championships at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall today.  In the competition, the Buffanblu girls tallied a grand aggregate of 2126, breaking the state record of 2111 set by Sacred Hearts in 2003.

In the girls competition, Sacred Hearts junior Clarissa Akana took the gold medal with a grand aggregate of 556, missing the state individual championship record set by Vicci Yau of Punahou in 2002.  Second place finisher Lauren Riford of Punahou fell just a point behind the champion with a total of 555.

Aranaydos hit the mark
By Brendan Sagara
Honolulu Star Bulletin

It was a family affair at the Civilian Marksmanship Program Air Riflery State Championships yesterday as Pearl City’s LeLan Aranaydo captured the boys title at the Neal Blasidell Exhibition Hall.

Aranaydo claimed his first state championship in style, dominating in all three phases of the contest to out-point St. Anthony’s Paul Berce, 546 to 535. Aranaydo led all shooters in the prone (191 points) and kneeling (186) positions, and shared the event’s top score in the standing position (169) with Berce.

“It feels so unreal, this is a great way to end my last year,” Aranaydo said. “I just felt it today. Everything just seemed to fall into the right places today.”

The senior shared his big victory with his parents, longtime Pearl City head coach Lester Aranaydo and Chargers girls head coach Shareen.

“This is a result of all the hard work and extra time he put in this year, I’m really proud of him,” Lester said. “It wasn’t always easy. It’s hard to coach your own child. Once we drew the line — that I am coach at practice and Dad at home — he really took off.”

Punahou’s sharpshooters sweep state championships
By Leila Wai

The past was a constant presence for the Punahou boys and girls air riflery teams, which swept the 10th Civilian Marksmanship Program Air Riflery State Championships yesterday at the Neal Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall.

The boys won their fourth straight state title and the girls captured their first since 2005, and fourth overall, with a state record score.

“I just wanted to live up to what (former Buffanblu shooters) had done,” Punahou senior Bert Weeks said.

Individually, Pearl City’s LeLan Aranaydo won the boys title with a grand aggregate score of 546, and Sacred Hearts junior Haunani Akana won the girls title with 556.

The Buffanblu boys scored 2038 points, followed by Pearl City (2032) and Waiakea (2031). Four Buffanblu shooters — Chris Han (fifth place, 520), Weeks (11th, 507), Jon Chen (12th, 507) and Alex Char (14th, 504) — finished in the top 14.
