It was a well-rounded learning experience for the Hilo High School girls soccer team at the Big Island Candies/Hilo Bay Classic, which concluded on Sunday.
The Vikings tied Kealakehe 1-1 at Hilo Bayfront, facing the team that stopped their impressive state-tournament appearance streak last year.
Last season, the Waveriders edged the Vikings 1-0, gaining the Big Island Interscholastic Federation’s last spot to the Division I state tourney. Konawaena had the other berth.
Before the upset, Hilo had been to the state tournament eight straight times, the longest streak for boys or girls in the BIIF in recent memory.
