PLAINFIELD – Class 4A No. 9 Plainfield scored the hat trick Jan. 23, snapping a lengthy losing streak to Mid-State Conference rival Mooresville with a gutsy 57-53 victory that ruined the previously undefeated Pioneers’ perfect season and lassoed control of the conference race.
Sophomore swingman Julia Henson scored 24 points to lead Plainfield (14-1 overall, 5-0 in Mid-State play), which had dropped at least 11 straight games to its neighbor just to the south on State Road 267. Mooresville (15-1, 4-1) must now hope that Decatur Central (13-5, 4-1) can forge a three-way tie for the league lead when the Hawks host Plainfield Jan. 30.
A game that saw the home-standing Quakers lead by as many as 15 points in the first half ended up with three ties in a frenzied fourth quarter. Mooresville even had a chance to tie or win the game with a 3-pointer in the last 10 seconds, but the visitors missed a layup and couldn’t corral a loose ball at their own free throw line with five seconds to play before a screaming packed house.
Six-one junior center Meagan Callaway paced the Pioneers with 19 points, while sophomore guard Jama Sharp added 18. Six-one senior post Rachel Turk joined Henson in double figures with 15 for Plainfield.
