Farrington flattens ‘Iolani
By Kim Baxter
Special to the Star-Bulletin
The ‘Iolani girls basketball team is a guard-oriented squad that relies heavily on its backcourt. The Farrington girls basketball team, with frontcourt size to boot, pounds the ball inside and lets its height do the heavy lifting.
So when the two teams met in the Division I quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships at Kaimuki, something had to give. Unfortunately for ‘Iolani, the Raiders’ guards weren’t enough to offset the Governors’ Goliaths inside, and third-seeded Farrington cruised to a 68-51 victory yesterday and a semifinal berth against Konawaena today.
With Sofia Folaumahina (6-foot), Kirsten Liana (5 -11) and Lusina Otineru (5-10), the Governors dominated the paint against ‘Iolani’s swarming, pesky defense. Those three frontcourt players combined for 31 points, 26 rebounds, four blocks and a lot of headaches for ‘Iolani.
“Farrington is tough,” said ‘Iolani coach Marlene Zeug. “They’ve got size, they’ve got speed and they’re athletic. It’s always going to be a tough matchup for us because we’re always challenged by size.”

Farrington moving on

The Farrington girls basketball team is big and physical.
No secret there.
But the Governors also played the full 94 feet to beat ‘Iolani, 68-51, last night in the quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division I State Championships at Kaimuki High.
Farrington, the O’ahu Interscholastic Association champion, put the game away by outscoring ‘Iolani 20-6 in the third period behind its 2-2-1 full-court press.
The run gave Farrington, the No. 3 seed, a 49-30 advantage.
“We knew we weren’t playing defense well in the first half,” said Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu. “We had to step it up and we decided to keep the pressure on with our full-court press and we got some steals.”
Farrington, which also dominated inside, will face No. 2 seed Konawaena in the semifinals tonight at 7 at the Neal Blaisdell Arena.
