Konawaena freshman guard Emalia Galdeira poured in a game-high 23 points and hauled in nine rebounds to lead the Wildcats over Punahou 54-50 in a double overtime thriller tonight in the championship game of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Division I Girls Basketball State Championships at the Neal Blaisdell Arena.
Second-seeded Konawaena, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, improved to 15-0 on the season and claimed its third state crown in five years—the last of which came in 2007, also in a win over Punahou. Galdeira took home tournament Most Outstanding Player honors for her effort, while teammate Kim Brown chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds.
Top-seeded Punahou (13-2), the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, established the momentum throughout most of the first quarter, and ended the period up 9-8.

Konawaena claims another 1
By Paul Honda
All hail the women in black and green.
Lia Galdeira poured in 23 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had four steals as second-seeded Konawaena outlasted No. 1 seed Punahou 54-50 in two overtimes last night in the final of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships at Neal Blaisdell Arena. A crowd of 1,687 included a strong following from the Big Island.
Konawaena, loaded with prime-time sophomores and freshmen, closed the season with 24 wins in a row and captured its third state title in the last six years.
“Punahou made a great run. We lost some composure and got a little rattled,” coach Bobbie Awa said of the Buffanblu’s rally from 11 points down. “Kara (Hanato-Smith) showed great leadership, telling her teammates, ‘It ain’t over, settle down.'”
Punahou won four of the previous six state crowns — 10 overall — but had to settle for its third runner-up finish since 2004.

Young Wildcats top Buffanblu in 2 OTs

For Konawaena’s youthful girls basketball team, the bright future is now.
The Wildcats — with three freshmen and a sophomore in the starting lineup — rallied past Punahou, 54-50, last night in a double-overtime thriller to win the school’s third Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai’i High School Athletic Association championship in six years.
A vocal, mostly pro-Konawaena crowd of 1,687 at Blaisdell Arena watched the Wildcats finish the regular and postseason unbeaten at 15-0.
“It feels really good, I think we deserve it because we worked hard,” said Konawaena freshman Lia Galdeira, a 5 foot 7 wing who finished with a game-high 23 points, along with nine rebounds and four steals. “We just had to play our game, have heart and don’t choke.”
