KAILUA-KONA — After going winless in three home games last week, the opening weekend of prep football, the Maui Interscholastic League got an 18-8 victory from King Kekaulike High School over Kealakehe on the road Saturday.

Na Alii (1-1) took the lead on a 61-yard run by Charles Spencer, and Taylor Deguerra added a 2-point conversion run to make the score 15-8 with 10 minutes, 15 seconds to play at Waverider Stadium.

Spencer, who missed last week’s game, ran for 157 yards, according to Na Alii coach J.W. Kenton.

Andrew Conti’s 25-yard field goal with 2:37 left sealed the win for King Kekaulike, which relied on its defense all night. Elvis Matagi sacked Dominick Trevino on fourth down to give Na Alii the ball on their own 44-yard line with 8:59 to play, setting up the drive that ended with Conti’s clincher.

”We played pretty good defense tonight, I was real pleased,” Kenton said. ”They came together like a family like I have been asking them to do for a couple of weeks.”
