Blue Chip Conference preview: A conference that lives up to its name

By Mike McGraw

Executive Director

At first glance, the Blue Chip Conference would appear to be nothing of consequence. The league includes two of the smallest schools in the state. Fully half of the members do not even play football. The schools are, in many cases, located in towns never heard of by anyone outside of Southern Indiana. It is a nondescript conference in a remote part of the state, right?

Wrong. Anyone with a knowledge of basketball and a sense of history realizes that the Blue Chip is a very aptly named league.

The Blue Chip is home to last yearâ??s Class 2A state champion on the boys side and the Class A runners-up on the boys AND girls side. It is also home to many of the legendary small-school programs and rivalries in Indiana. Names like Loogootee, Barr-Reeve, and Forest Park are synonymous with â??Hoosier Hysteria.â?

In girls basketball, this league is all about winning — last season, five conference schools won sectional titles. Things would appear to be no different in 2005-2006.

The conference favorite is North Knox, led by the multi-talented Megan Miller. She is only one of several returning players who make the Warriors the preseason odds-on choice. But the road will not be easy. Strong challenges will come from Forest Park and last yearâ??s A state runner-up, Northeast Dubois.

Forest Park will feature a large crop of talented sophomores, many of whom got their feet wet at the varsity level last year. This class was undefeated all the way through junior high and is expected to lead the Rangers to big things in the next few years.

Northeast Dubois lost a couple of key players, but the Jeeps are reloading more than rebuilding. The Jeeps will be led by Tia Wineinger, who averaged 9.4 points per game last season, and sophomore Allison Matheis, who was right behind at 9.2 ppg. Fans should also keep an eye out for the now-healthy Whitney Hall, a 5â??10â? senior who will be a force inside.

If you are looking for a dark horse, try Loogootee. That, by the way, might be the strangest concept ever envisioned in Indiana basketball. How can Loogootee ever be a dark horse on the hardwood? At any rate, the Lions boast a solid nucleus of talent to go with all that tradition.

The bottom half of the conference should include Shoals, which continues to look for anything the Jug Rox can use as a foundation for some tradition, as well as Washington Catholic and Vincennes Rivet. Washington Catholic is only two years removed from a state title game appearance but, along with Rivet, they fight the small-school syndrome of not being able to put together good classes back-to-back.

At last yearâ??s boys semistate, Loogootee fans wore shirts saying, â??Winning is our business, and business is good.â? I hope the guy who printed those printed enough for the whole conference, for that statement could be the title slogan of the Blue Chip.
