Aloha!  The Asics Rainbows Volleyball Club is pleased to announce the inaugural Hawaii Volleyball Combine to be held on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the Manoa Valley District Park Gymnasium from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.   This is an unprecedented event.  This Recruiting Combine is limited to elite volleyball players graduating between 2010 & 2013.

Who is Eligible:   Elite High School girls volleyball players graduating between 2010 and 2013, regardless of club affiliation.  Players must have at least 2 years club experience and have the potential to play Division I or Division II college volleyball.    This is a perfect opportunity for those players who would normally have limited exposure to mainland college coaches because their club team may not travel to the mainland to play or does not qualify for the Junior Olympics.  This is also a great opportunity for club players who want additional exposure to mainland college coaches.   The Combine enables players to be scouted by top mainland college coaches without incurring any costly  travel expenses such as airfare and hotel.

The Cost:  The demand is high and therefore registration will be limited.  Registration is here online and on a first-come-first-served basis.  The cost is just $150.00.  If you want to register but for some reason cannot do so online, please call Coach Luis Ramiirez at 349-3107 or email us at honoweb@aol.com.

What You Get:  Players will be showcased right here in Hawaii before top Division I and Division II volleyball coaches from across the United States.  The coaches are traveling here to Hawaii to scout you!  Each player will have the opportunity to show their skills to these top level coaches.  All players receive a Hawaii Volleyball Combine T-shirt with a designated number on it.  Do not miss this rare opportunity!

Mililani, Kalani girls in OIA final

By Leila Wai

The Mililani girls soccer team is back in the O’ahu Interscholastic Association championship game for the third straight year.

None of the players or coaches on Kalani has played for the OIA crown.

The two teams will meet tonight at 7 for the OIA Red Conference title at Kapolei.

In semifinal matches yesterday at Kapolei, Mililani beat Moanalua, 1-0, and Kalani beat Kapolei, 1-0.

All four teams already qualified for next week’s HHSAA State Tournament.

Mililani, the West champion, got a second-half goal from senior forward Dee Dee Moriwaki to beat Moanalua.

“It’s a good feeling to come back (to the title game),” said Ray Akiona, coach of the defending champion Trojans. “That’s one of our goals. We played some really good teams this year. There’s a lot of parity among the teams this year.”

Mililani (14-0-0) has faced solid challenges from its first two opponents in the tournament.

On Wednesday, the Trojans beat Kaiser on penalty kicks.

Moanalua (11-3-0), the East runner-up, won a tough 2-1 game Wednesday against Pearl City in the quarterfinals.

KALANI 1, KAPOLEI 0

Kalani will play for the OIA title for the first time since 2006 after getting a goal from four-year varsity member Sonya Aguirre.

“It’s so exciting,” said Aguirre. “It was an important game, and we really wanted to win because it was our last time.”

East champion Kalani improved to 12-1-1; Kapolei, the West runner-up, dropped to 8-3-3.

Aguirre, who started at forward but was moved to right halfback in the second half to provide a stronger midfield, scored in the 60th minute after taking advantage of her team’s pressure. Senior forward Randee Yamada broke free into the right side of the 18-yard box and the Kapolei goalkeeper came out to challenge the ball. It popped free to Aguirre, who shot from beyond the 18-yard box over the head of a defender and into an open net.

“I’m thinking, ‘What do I do with this?’ “Aguirre said. “But the keeper came out, and I just wanted to kick it near the goal because I knew a player couldn’t touch it.”

Kapolei senior Kristina Behrens thought she had the equalizer as time was expiring when her free kick skimmed off the crossbar. She also had another free kick hit the crossbar in the first half.

Kalani girls reach OIA soccer semis
By Leila Wai
Honolulu Advertiser

Unrelenting offensive pressure resulted in four second-half goals for Kalani, which beat Castle, 5-0, in an O’ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference quarterfinal game yesterday at Kapolei High.

Kalani (11-1-1) meets Kapolei (8-2-3) tonight in one semifinal at 7 at Kapolei. Moanalua (11-2-0) and Mililani (13-0-0) play in the other semifinal at 5:15 p.m. Kalani clinched a berth in the state tournament with yesterday’s win. Castle (3-10-1) still has a shot at one of the OIA’s six berths.

Kalani dominated in the first half, taking double-digit shots that never found the goal until junior midfielder Tambrie Awai scored in the 35th minute. With the Knights unable to clear successive shots, the ball popped up in the air in the 18-yard box and Awai leaped up and volleyed it.

“I think that first goal allowed them to start really playing their game as opposed to being a tiny bit frantic about getting that first goal,” Kalani coach Michelle Richardson-De Almeida said.

That goal fueled the Falcons, who scored again in the first minute of the second half on a shot from the top of the 18-yard box by senior midfielder Courtney Oshiro.

“I think the girls understood the challenges they were facing in terms of the first half, and they proved in the first moments of the second half that that’s the way they should be playing,” Richardson-De Almeida said.

Senior forward Randee Yamada scored in the 56th minute off a corner kick by senior forward Sonya Aguirre that was initially shot by senior midfielder Andrea Aguirre. The ball bounced out of the keeper’s possession to Yamada’s foot.

Two minutes later, Andrea Aguirre set up twin sister Sonya with a through ball into the 18-yard box that Sonya finished with a shot into the right side of the goal.

In the 73rd minute, freshman midfielder Jana Kakugawa scored on a cross from junior midfielder Jordan Lopez to end the scoring.

The Falcons beat the Knights twice in the regular season by a combined score of 9-0.

Castle coach Mark Kane said his team’s strategy yesterday was to mark the Aguirres and Yamada, and noted that the first goal didn’t come from any of them.

“We lost our concentration at the start of the second half, and then we let down,” Kane said.

Note: Mililani beat Moanalua, 5-0, yesterday to win its 10th straight OIA Red JV title. … Wai’anae beat Kailua, 1-0, to win the OIA White JV title.
