No. 2 Kahuku boys top No. 5 Kaimuki in OT

By Wes Nakama
Honolulu Advertiser

KAHUKU — Kahuku overcame a six-point deficit with under two minutes remaining in regulation and then outscored Kaimuki 13-6 in overtime last night for a pulsating 68-61 O’ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball victory.

A vocal home crowd of about 450 watched the Red Raiders — ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser’s statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — improve to 9-0 in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division. Kaimuki, ranked No. 5, fell to 5-3 as its five-game win streak ended.

“It was a great game,” said Kahuku guard Jray Galeai, who scored four points and grabbed four rebounds in overtime and finished with a game-high 25 points. “Kaimuki is a well-coached team, and they have great players. But our coach (Hiram Akina) just told us that in games like this, we have to dig down deeper and keep our composure.”

GBB: 4A #7 Plainfield escapes 4A #12 Decatur Central, 49-48

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

INDIANAPOLIS – When two good teams meet, you expect changes in momentum during the game. Class 4A No. 7 Plainfield and 4A 12th-ranked host Decatur Central took that to extremes Jan. 30 during their Mid-State Conference showdown.

This game took swings that most fans have never seen, and few will ever see again. Still, in the end it came down to one play as Plainfield held on for a 49-48 victory that clinched the conference crown for the Quakers.

Plainfield (15-1 overall, 6-0 Mid-State) spent the first four minutes of the contest building a 9-2 lead on the strength of a penetrating offense and with the help of Decatur Central (13-6, 4-2) missing its initial five shots. It looked as though the powerful Quakers were going to add another easy victim to their long list of conquests.

That picture soon changed in a big, big way.

Late in the first quarter, Decatur Central leading scorer Anna Munn (17 points in this clash) returned to the floor after a brief stint on the bench. She brought lightning with her as she scored seven points in the waning moments of the period, and they were part of an 11-0 Hawks run that saw them lead 13-9 after the first stanza.

That momentum continued into a second quarter, which became a clinic in half-court motion offense delivered by Decatur Central. The hosts outscored Plainfield 20-8 in the second period to grab a commanding 33-17 lead at intermission.

In case you didn’t do the math, that means Decatur Central outscored the Quakers 31-8 over the last 12 minutes of the first half. Game, set, and match, right?

Wrong.

Believe it or not, what occurred during the first 12 minutes of the second half made the first edition look mild. Plainfield returned to the court with renewed purpose on defense. Actually, that might be an understatement.

After causing just two Hawk turnovers in the first half, Plainfield forced Decatur Central into nine miscues in the third quarter alone. The Quakers made sure they took advantage of most of them, and the onslaught continued into the fourth period as, with 4:15 remaining in the game, Plainfield held a 43-36 lead!

It is math time again. Over the first 12 minutes of the second half, Decatur Central scored just three points after tallying 33 in the first two quarters. The Quaker run over that time span was 26-3, and Decatur looked confused, dazed, and completely out of gas.

Wrong again.

With the score 45-38, DC coach David Cupp called a timeout. On their ensuing possession, the Hawks ran the best offense they had mustered in the entire second half, scoring on an easy shot inside the lane.

The success seemed to reincarnate their defense, which had died much earlier in the half, as the Hawks did not allow Plainfield to score from the field for the remainder of the contest. Decatur, meanwhile, went on a quick 6-0 run to cut the lead to 45-44.

Plainfield hit one of two charity tosses to stretch the lead back to two, and the Hawks missed a 3-point attempt that would have given them the lead. That set the stage for Plainfield sophomore Julia Henson to be a hero in the most unlikely of ways.

On Plainfield’s next trip, Henson hit one of two free throws to make it 47-44. Decatur Central quickly answered as the clock went under 30 seconds to play, closing to 47-46 and then sending Henson to the stripe again with slightly over 20 seconds left. The strategy almost worked as Henson missed both free tosses, the second short and barely grazing the front of the iron.

The blockout by Decatur Central was not what it should have been, however, and Plainfield got a hand on the rebound, setting off a mad scramble for the ball that ended in a jump ball. The possession arrow favored Plainfield, giving the Quakers the ball on the sideline near midcourt.

On the inbound, Decatur went to the well again, fouling Henson with 15 seconds to play. This time she calmly sank both charity efforts to put Plainfield on top 49-46.

Decatur Central ran a play designed to create an open 3-pointer from the left wing, but Plainfield defended it well and the shot fell short. The Hawks garnered the offensive rebound but were left with only enough time to immediately put back a two-point effort, and the clock ran out.

When the zeroes flashed, Plainfield claimed the Mid-State Conference championship in a game more than befitting such a prize. And by claiming close victories over their nearest league competitors in the last week (Plainfield downed rival 4A No. 8 Mooresville 57-53 on Jan. 23), the Quakers certainly earned it.

Plainfield was led by the 16 points of post player Rachel Turk, while Henson added 13.

For the host Hawks, the loss spoiled a dream night for Decatur Central’s Olivia Yaryan. She scored a game-high 19 points, including back-to-back-to-back threes during the Hawks’ second-quarter offensive display, and also was named the winter homecoming queen at Decatur Central in ceremonies before the game.

A record 397 schools – six more than last year – were put into brackets
Jan. 29 in anticipation of the 34th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State
Tournament that will begin 11 days from now. The previous high of 393
schools entered the 1981 state tournament.

Sectional games are
scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 9, and run through Saturday, Feb. 14,
at 64 sites around the state. The regional round is slated for Feb. 21,
semistates will be Feb. 28, and the state finals are set for March 7 at
Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

One change from previous
years is the structure of the six-team bracket. Last April, the IHSAA
Executive Committee approved a proposal from the Indiana Basketball
Coaches Association that calls for each of the two bye teams to play a
winning team from the first round. Previously, the bye teams played
each other in the second semifinal game.

In Class 4A, Sectional
12 host Ben Davis – ranked first in both polls sponsored by the Indiana
Coaches of Girls Sports Association and Indiana Basketball Coaches
Association – drew Indianapolis Manual for its opener. In 3A,
top-ranked Benton Central drew a bye and will face the West
Lafayette-Western winner at home in Sectional 20.

Three-time
defending 2A champ Heritage Christian again sits in the 2A catbird seat
and drew a bye and will take on the Indian Creek-Triton Central winner
in Sectional 43 at Triton Central. Vincennes Rivet, No. 1 in Class A,
drew North Daviess in Sectional 63 at Barr-Reeve.

Among the
other defending state champions, Class A’s Fort Wayne Canterbury will
host Elkhart Christian in Sectional 51, 3A winner Plymouth will face
South Bend St. Joseph’s in the first round of Sectional 19 at Glenn,
and 4A Carmel will meet Noblesville in Sectional 9 at Zionsville.

Four
member schools will be making their first appearances in the state
tournament, while one – Indianapolis Attucks – will compete in the
tournament for the first time since 1986. Attucks, Fall Creek Academy,
and Indianapolis Metropolitan are assigned to Class A Sectional 59 at
University. Bowman Academy and Seton Catholic will make their debuts in
Class A Sectional 49 at Washington Catholic and Sectional 55 at Tri,
respectively.

Castle (4A) and Shenandoah (2A) lead the state
with nine consecutive sectional championships, while Heritage Christian
and Northeast Dubois follow with six in a row.

Kahuku presence in Super Bowl should not surprise anyone

By Dave Reardon
Honolulu Advertiser
Feb. 1, 2009

Perhaps you have heard of a place called San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic. More than 100 Major League Baseball players were born in this town of around 200,000, earning it the name “Cradle of Shortstops.”

I’m not the first to call Samoa its gridiron equivalent. And if we zoom it down to zip codes, Kahuku’s 96731 is to producing football studs what 90210 is to cheesy TV of the ’90s.

Mike Huguenin, who used to be my boss in Gainesville, Fla., writes for Rivals.com now. He notes that there are two players in the Super Bowl today from the same high school. He writes that, “incredibly, it’s a high school in Hawaii.”

It’s remarkable, yes. But not incredible.

This was just a matter of time.

Of course, people here are proud, but who among us is really surprised? And anyone paying close attention to the explosion of Polynesian power in the NFL wouldn’t be, either.

As for Kahuku, specifically, in 2006 it tied for first with five alumni in the NFL. Aaron Francisco (safety, Cardinals) and Chris Kemoeatu (guard, Steelers) are today’s Super Bowl participants.

Kahuku alums meet again

By Jeff Zillgitt
USA Today

TAMPA, Fla. — If Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Chris Kemoeatu is blocking downfield and sees Arizona Cardinals safety Aaron Francisco in his path Sunday in Super Bowl XLIII, both know what will happen.

It’s not the type of reunion the two former high school teammates at Kahuku relish. But they will set aside friendship for a championship.

“I’m heavier, so I’ll get the best of him,” says Kemoeatu, who is 6-3, 344 pounds compared to Francisco at 6-2, 216.

“Everybody back home keeps saying ‘I hope you run into him on the field,’ ” Francisco says. “That’ll be nice for those guys to see, but I don’t know if that’ll be good for me.”

The two players have not yet talked since their teams advanced to the Super Bowl, but Kemoeatu said he planned to get in touch with Francisco this week. Francisco said the families of the Pacific Islanders (a group that includes Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu and Arizona’s Deuce Lutui and Pago Togafau) were going to have dinner one night in Tampa.

Francisco’s and Kemoeatu’s presence in the Super Bowl is important in Kahuku, where some of the best surfing in the world can be found.

Kemoeatu will play this time
Honolulu Star Bulletin Staff

Pittsburgh’s left guard from Kahuku was a rookie backup in Super Bowl XL

Chris Kemoeatu has been in this situation before, getting ready for a Super Bowl.

Well, sort of.

In 2006 in Detroit, there was less of a sense of urgency for the offensive lineman from Kahuku. He was just a practice player who suited up only once and did not expect to play against the Seahawks, and his expectations were met.

Now, in Super Bowl XLIII against the Arizona Cardinals, Kemoeatu will start at left guard. The brother of Carolina defensive lineman Ma’ake Kemoeatu replaced Alan Faneca who went the free-agent route to the Jets in the offseason.

Kemoeatu visibly enjoyed talking with the media yesterday, especially talking about representing Kahuku and Hawaii and going up against his former high school teammate, Arizona safety Aaron Francisco.

“Football is everything to that town,” he said of Kahuku.

Kemoeatu will play this time

By Ellery McCardle
Special to the Star-Bulletin

TAMPA, Fla. » As the ring of reporters expanded around Chris Kemoeatu, the shy big man from the North Shore of Oahu didn’t shrink away.

As he has on the football field, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting left guard grew into his role at Super Bowl XLIII media day yesterday.

The questions were repetitive, but ones he didn’t mind addressing. In fact, they made him smile.

What’s it like to be starting this time?

How do you feel about replacing a legend, Alan Faneca?

How about playing against your Kahuku High School teammate, Cardinals safety Aaron Francisco, and representing Hawaii?

Again and again.

All Kemoeatu did was keep grinning and keep answering.

“Actually playing in the game this time, that’s what I’m really excited about,” said Kemoeatu, who was a raw rookie on the bench three years ago when the Steelers beat the Seahawks in Super Bowl XL. He suited up for just one game that year and didn’t play in the finale.
