Football camp offers high exposure

By Wes Nakama
Honolulu Advertiser

The nationally renowned “All-Poly” high school football camp made its Hawai’i debut yesterday, in the shadow of Diamond Head and a couple long kickoffs away from Waikiki Beach.

And with it came coaches from over 20 NCAA Division I programs, representatives from three major recruiting Web sites and the promise of unprecedented exposure for about 300 local football prospects.

“This is the biggest thing we’ve had here,” said former Kealakehe High School coach Sam Papali’i, who also had stints as an assistant at the University of Hawai’i, Utah, Nevada-Las Vegas and Iowa State. “There hasn’t been anything better for the prospects of this state.”

The three-day camp at Kapi’olani Park features such notable instructors as UCLA offensive coordinator Norm Chow, Colorado assistant head coach Brian Cabral and Brigham Young defensive line coach Steve Kaufusi, along with several others with strong Hawai’i ties, like Oregon State defensive line coach and Radford High graduate Joe Seumalo, Utah State defensive line coach Chad Kaha’aha’a (Baldwin) and Central Arkansas defensive backs coach Corey Batoon (Saint Louis).

Hawai’i associate coach Rich Miano and director of football player personnel Tony Tuioti also are serving as instructors.

Since its humble origin in Utah eight years ago, the All-Poly Camp has grown into a nationally recognized hotbed that has attracted dozens of top DI prospects and coaches. Past Hawai’i standouts like Punahou’s Manti Te’o and Kahuku’s Spencer Hafoka and Paipai Falemalu participated in the All-Poly Camp in Bountiful, Utah, but camp founder and organizer Alema Te’o decided to bring the camp to Hawai’i to make it more accessible to local players.

(The camp is rooted in the aim to help high school athletes of Polynesian ancestry, but is now open to students of any ethnic background.)

Camp spokesperson Linda Fehoko estimated about 90 percent of yesterday’s 300-plus participants were from Hawai’i, including several from the Neighbor Islands.

GBB: Girls hoops state finals move to Fort Wayne in 2010

From the IHSAA

Indiana High School Athletic Association Commissioner Blake Ress announced June 22 that the IHSAA has an agreement in principle approving Fort Wayne as the host site of the 2010 IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals.

The agreement is for one year and calls for the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum to host the 35th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals (its four state championship games) on Saturday, March 6, 2010.

“The proposal submitted by the Fort Wayne business community to host our girls basketball state finals in 2010 was simply too attractive to pass over,” said Ress. “Even though this decision may create some additional travel for some schools, I think the reception they will receive in Fort Wayne will outweigh those issues.

“We are excited about hosting this event in Fort Wayne.”

Randy Brown, executive vice president and general manager of the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, said the community is delighted at the prospect of hosting the girls state finals.

“Memorial Coliseum is an outstanding venue to host this great event, and I’m confident our community will fully embrace this opportunity to make it a great experience for the teams and fans of high school basketball,” Brown said.

In addition to Fort Wayne, the IHSAA received bids from Ball State University in Muncie and Indiana University in Bloomington.

Neither Indianapolis venue used in recent years – Conseco Fieldhouse, which hosted the girls state finals from 2001-2008, nor Lucas Oil Stadium, which hosted in 2009 – was available for use on next year’s date.

June 12-14 Session 3, University of Oklahoma Sooners Football Camp

Over 450 camp attendees each session…

In spite of one Tornado evacuation to the basement at OU our athletes
was running full throttle for three days participating in every
practice session.  Our athletes had the undivided attention from Chris
Wilson (Defensive Ends Coach), including Head Coach Bob Stoops who
attended camp activities everyday.  Coach Wilson had also asked the
Hawaii boys to go up against the senior class of 2010 for the one on
one drills which every true offensive lineman were averaging over 6’5”
300 lbs, but that did not stop our boys from getting the exposure and
attention they needed to represent Hawaii.

The last local athlete to be recognized here at Oklahoma Sooners was CJ
Ah You who is now playing for the St Louis Rams.  Coach Wilson repeatedly shared with us that CJ Ah You was one of the greatest athlete he has ever worked with in his entire coaching career.

Quote by Coach Wadsley Abihai:  The football talent here in Oklahoma
was an eye opening experience for me and our boys from Hawaii, after
coaching for over 25 years the skill of training and preparing the kids
on the off season  has changed tremendously, i would like to encourage
all of our local coaching staff to go out and experience what the
different programs has to offer.

This Camp was also another very good experience for our athletes, Jeff
Madden (Head Strenghthening Coach) Donnie Maibe (Asst Strenghtening
Coach) offers the most recent and innovative training techniques that
continue to prepare their Longhorns for national championships year
after year, we also had the opportunity to congratulate our local boy
and new Assistant Head Coach Duane Akina.  Overall our Hawaii athletes
have matured so much over these past two weeks we cant wait to return
home and eat some Hawaiian food.

KHON2 Sports Broadcast:
HHSAA Cuts State Tournament Participation

Reported by:
John Veneri

Email: jveneri@khon.com

The Executive Board of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association met today, to vote on proposals to reduce the number of participants in state tournaments.

It comes in response to a department of education mandate, for a 50 percent budget cut for athletic supplies, equipment and travel….but these budget cuts could have an even greater impact.

Proposals awaiting executive board approval addressed state tournament participation in individual sports as well as team sports.   But the only thing finalized was the number of entrants that needed to be cut from state championships for individual sports.Of the sports affected, cross country will be cut from 200 entrants per gender to 160 an approximately 20 percent reduction.

State swimming will be trimmed from 24 entries to 20 and most other individual sports like golf, wrestling, and tennis will be chopped by at least 20 percent.  Another priority of the board, was to assure that despite diminished participation each of the 5 leagues statewide would still be represented in state tournament play.

Still on the agenda and needing quick resolve, participation in state tournaments for team sports.

Currently all division one and division two team sports with the exception of football feature 12 schools.

From now till the next meeting, discussions on how many to cut will take priority.

GBB: Girls Indiana All-Stars complete Kentucky sweep, 85-75

By Sam King
jconline.com

LOUISVILLE – Florida recruit Lily Svete was comfortable sitting on the bench and rooting for her Indiana All-Star team to come back.

But Svete certainly didn’t shy away from being the hero June 14. The Penn graduate hit two crucial 3-pointers midway through the second half to help Indiana rally from an 11-point halftime deficit and defeat Kentucky, 85-75, at Bellarmine University’s Knights Hall.

“It was the spark that we needed,” Connecticut recruit Kelly Faris said. “Our confidence as a whole boosted right there.”

The critical baskets came after Miss Basketball Skylar Diggins was forced to the bench with four fouls. Benton Central grad Skyler Gick replaced Diggins and helped set up Svete’s heroics.

“Gick is a great player, and she has great court vision,” Svete said. “She isn’t the biggest, fastest, or strongest girl out there, but she knows what she does best and she is very good at it.

“She finds people you don’t think are open.”

Gick finished with two points, one rebound, and one steal in 11 minutes of action in helping the Indiana All-Stars sweep their Kentucky counterparts for the third time in four years. Kentucky won both girls games a year ago.

“I think this game tested us, and I think we proved ourselves,” Gick said. “They were very physical, and that is something we had to deal with.”

Indiana trailed 43-32 at halftime before Diggins took over.

The national high school player of the year scored 25 of her 29 in the second 20 minutes, adding five rebounds and four steals as Indiana outscored Kentucky 53-32. Diggins had six points and assisted on an Alex Bentley basket during a 15-3 run to begin the second half.

DeAirra Goss scored on a spin move in the lane with 14:29 remaining to give the visitors a 47-46 lead.

Indiana used a full-court press to perfection to limit Kentucky’s offense. Indiana forced 22 turnovers, 19 of which were steals.

“We came out and played with some more intensity (in the second half),” Indiana coach Stan Benge said.

After a free throw tied the game at 47, Svete hit a deep three and another from the wing in a 54-second span. Kentucky took a 66-65 lead, but a Diggins’ 3-pointer put Indiana ahead for good.

Diggins’ 54 points in the two-game series ties her with Kentucky’s Geri Grigsby (1977) for second most in history. Indiana’s Tiffany Gooden had 55 in the 1994 series.

Penn State recruit Bentley was the only other Indiana player in double figures, scoring 12. Faris tied Diggins with a game-high four rebounds.

Ashley Rainey had 18 points and 13 rebounds for the hosts, and Kentucky Miss Basketball Adia Mathies had 19 points.

GBB: Indiana All-Stars drill visiting Kentucky, 105-75

By Sam King
jconline.com

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana All-Stars displayed their depth and star power during a 105-75 victory over Kentucky’s girls June 13 at Conseco Fieldhouse.

The depth came from 13 players making the scoring column. The star power came from Skylar Diggins, the national high school player of the year.

Diggins scored 17 points to Kentucky’s 14 in the second half’s first 7:33 to help Indiana open a gap and eventually run away.

“The first four minutes of the second half was probably the most important minutes of the game,” Diggins said. “We all knew we had to step it up. The defense stepped it up and got some steals in transition. I just took my role and my teammates did a great job of setting me up.”

The Notre Dame-bound Diggins earned game MVP honors with 25 points and five rebounds in 22 minutes.

Indiana led 35-34 with 4:24 remaining in the first half. A three-point play by Diggins with three seconds left provided a 10-point halftime cushion.

From there, the 2009 Miss Basketball took over with 14 points in the first five minutes of the second half, then sank a 3-pointer just moments later to make the score 77-54.

“Whenever you’ve got somebody on your team and you see they are hitting, you obviously want to get the ball to them and set them up,” said Heritage Christian graduate Kelly Faris, who will play at Connecticut.

Benton Central graduate Skyler Gick made both of her field goal attempts, a fast-break layup and a fadeaway jumper. Gick finished with four points, one assist, and one rebound in 14 minutes.

Indiana has now won 26 of the 35 meetings since 1993, which includes a Kentucky sweep last season, and leads the series 37-30.

Still, the Hoosier state representatives believe there’s room for improvement before Sunday’s game at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky.

Indiana trailed 13-4 five minutes into the game.

“After about the first five minutes, offensively, I thought we played very well,” said Indiana coach Stan Benge, who mentored Ben Davis to an undefeated state title this season against Diggins’ South Bend Washington team. “We still need to work on our defense a little bit. We fouled too much, but if we get that down it is going to be fun to watch (Sunday).”

Lecretia Smith, who helped Fort Wayne Elmhurst defeat Benton Central in this year’s Class 3A semistate, scored on a spin move in the lane with just under five minutes remaining. Smith’s basket put all 13 Indiana All-Stars in the scoring column.

“You always want to get everyone to score, and everyone (on the team) can score,” Gick said. “Everyone plays their roles well on this team. Not everyone is going to be a scorer on this team.”

Penn State recruit Alex Bentley had 14 points and her Ben Davis classmate DeAirra Goss contributed 13. Faris chipped in 11. Hamilton Southeastern’s Courtney Osborn led Indiana with six rebounds.

Tennessee Tech recruit Tiara Hopper had 19 points, while Kentucky Miss Basketball and future Kentucky guard Adia Mathies scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Gick knows any less of an effort than what Indiana showed on Saturday will not be good enough Sunday.

“They are going to want us pretty bad because we kind of beat up on them,” Gick said. “We have to step it up defensively, and our defensive intensity will carry over to offense.”

GBB: Indiana All-Stars beat junior counterparts, 91-78

jconline.com

OXFORD – Brandi Richardson made an early statement for her case to be an Indiana All-Star next season.

The Lafayette Jefferson point guard caused matchup problems with her speed June 9, even against national player of the year Skylar Diggins. Richardson scored 14 points to lead the Junior All-Stars, but she couldn’t help her squad overcome a dominant Indiana All-Stars team.

The seniors left Benton Central’s Arena Gymnasium with a 91-78 victory but unhappy with their play.

“We got all the kinks out early, which is good,” said Miss Basketball Diggins, who finished with 19 points. “It’s our first time playing with each other, and I thought we did well toward the end.

“We just have stuff we still need to work on.”

Richardson scored 10 first-half points and helped the juniors take an early second-half lead.

“She was the reason we were able to compete with them in the first half and why we were able to go ahead of them in the second half,” said juniors coach Mark Redding.

Richardson thought she accomplished her goal, which was to prepare the Indiana All-Stars for their weekend series against Kentucky.

“I went out there and played hard and made my teammates better,” said Richardson, who also had four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. “Hopefully that senior team can do what they need to do when they go play Kentucky.”

Benton Central’s Skyler Gick started on her home floor. She hit just 1 of 4 3-pointers and scored five points with two assists and a block in 14 minutes.

“I had a little bit of nerves,” Gick said. “You feel a little bit of pressure playing in your own gym.”

The senior squad led the entire first half but surrendered the lead two minutes into the second half. Courtney Moses’ 3-point play put the juniors up 49-47.

“I think we definitely are getting them prepared for Kentucky,” said Moses, who has verbally committed to Purdue. “You don’t want to go in thinking you are going to lose. We got down early, and we stayed mentally tough throughout the whole game.

“We were right there.”

The seniors countered with a 21-5 run, sparked by Diggins’ five straight points and ending with a Gick trey.

Penn State-bound Alex Bentley helped the seniors stay afloat in the first half, scoring 12 of her game-high 21 points. Bentley made 7 of 12 shots.

“Offensively, she is the one who kept us in the game,” said All-Stars coach Stan Benge, who also coached Bentley at Ben Davis. “The rest of the girls were a little tentative. She felt a little more comfortable out there.

“Hopefully as the week progresses, everyone will step it up.”

Diggins, who was the Naismith and Gatorade national player of the year, rebounded from a slow first half to score 19 points and dish a game-high five assists.

The future Notre Dame point guard said the idea was to get more opportunities for Gick, who will play at Valparaiso.

“I said, ‘Skyler, it is your world – take over,’ ” Diggins said. “She can create at will. Her being here at her hometown, I am not sure if she was a little nervous or what, but she handles herself very well.

“She is a great teammate whether she is playing defense or off the ball or if she has the ball in her hand.”

Heritage Christian’s Kelly Faris, who will play at Connecticut next season, added 11 points for the seniors. Western Michigan recruit DeAirra Goss had nine rebounds.

Fort Wayne Canterbury’s Tabitha Gerardot tied Richardson with 14 points to lead the juniors. Purdue recruit Dee Dee Williams scored four points and pulled down two rebounds, and Moses had nine rebounds. Oak Hill’s Ashley Pickering had six blocks.

The Indiana All-Stars will be back in action June 11 against a different set of juniors at New Albany. The team then will host Kentucky June 13 at Conseco Fieldhouse before heading south for a June 14 follow-up tilt at Bellarmine in Louisville.

St. V Spirit of Sport: Heritage Christian girls BB not just about Ws

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

The story of the Heritage Christian girls basketball team has been well documented. In fact, there are those who would say the exploits of Kelly Faris and crew are the most chronicled story in Indiana high school sports since the nearly daily diary we received on Mike Conley and Greg Oden.

It is not the on-court heroics, however, that have the Eagles nominated for a St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Award as Team of the Year. Rather, it is who and what this group was off the court and how they handled their incredible success that is at the heart of this honor.

Nonetheless, a brief history of the Eagles’ accomplishments is in order. Heritage Christian won its fourth consecutive Class 2A state championship this past season. The Eagles were ranked as one of the Top 10 squads in America. They triumphed in overtime over a gallant group of players from Oak Hill in one of the greatest championship games in girls history.

Faris is headed to play in the storied program at Connecticut. Fellow senior Claire Freeman is moving on to ply her trade at Butler. The list of on-court accomplishments is too long to list.

Off the court, this team represented all that we celebrate about sport. They were excellent students. They delved deeply into community service. They were quality citizens. Most importantly, they handled their success with a sense of class and dignity that we will long remember.

With the level of pressures and distractions that come with the type of success these girls achieved, that is reason enough to herald their character.

Hoosier Authority sat down with coach Rick Risinger and team leaders Faris and Freeman to discuss what made this group so special.
