The fourth annual New City Nissan Goodwill Softball tournament will be played Sunday and Monday at Central O’ahu Regional Park.

The tournament features high school players from the O’ahu Interscholastic Association and Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

Sunday’s games will be at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday’s games are at 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

There was a time not long ago when many Hawai’i college football prospects were content to “talk with their pads,” leaving the gaudy stats (40-yard dash time, bench press, vertical jump, etc.) to Mainland players who often posted better numbers.

But times have changed, and with college recruiting as competitive and sophisticated as ever, the local talent has learned how to market themselves in every possible way.

That is why 277 of them showed up to the Eighth Annual Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance Football Combine yesterday at Saint Louis School. Each player was measured for height and weight, timed in the 40, recorded repetitions in the 185-pound and 225-pound bench press, vertical and broad jumps.

They also had times recorded in so-called “L” and “T” quickness and agility drills, and some were filmed in one-on-one line drills.

All of the players’ data were recorded and logged onto a spread sheet, which was posted on the internet last night for hundreds of college coaches to peruse.

“A lot of kids will be put on the map after today,” said Mililani High School coach Darnell Arceneaux, who directed the combine along with former University of Hawai’i standout Eddie Klaneski. “The linemen are always our heart and soul, but today we also had a lot of skill guys show up. This was one of the best years we’ve had.”

VJ Fehoko, a 2008 Advertiser All-State defensive lineman from Farrington who will transfer to Kahuku this summer, did an eye-popping 37 reps while bench-pressing 225 pounds. Fehoko is listed at 6 feet, 211 pounds.

Fehoko moving to Kahuku

A year older, a year stronger.

V.J. Fehoko will spend the next year in a new, but familiar home. Fehoko, one of the standouts at yesterday’s Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance Football Combine, confirmed that he has transferred from Farrington to Kahuku for his senior season.

The defensive end was a force for Farrington the past two seasons, but his grandfather’s illness has changed the course of his voyage. Tevita Fehoko has suffered from Alzheimer’s and heart problems in recent years. The elder Fehoko and wife, Sisilia, raised V.J. from ages 2 to 7 while the rest of V.J.’s family lived in Utah.

A few months ago, Tevita Fehoko, who is in his late 70s, was lost and wandering in the Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center area. When he was found, folks said he had been asking everyone, “Have you seen V.J.?”

“That kind of opened my eyes,” V.J. said.

That made leaving Farrington a bittersweet decision.

“There’s a lot of good people at Farrington. Coach George Kamau, always donating NFL stuff and cooking us food. Coach Randall (Okimoto), the coaches are good,” said V.J., a Star-Bulletin All-State first-team selection last year.

At the combine, held at Saint Louis School, Fehoko bench-pressed 225 pounds 33 times. Fehoko, who works out with his brother, Texas Tech linebacker Sam, also ran a 4.8 in the 40-yard dash and recorded a 35-inch vertical.

Over 600 college coaches from around the country ask for and receive results and video from the most respected and longest running combine in the state of Hawaii.

Due to NCAA regulations, college coaches are no longer allowed to attend combines so the colleges depend on these results for accuracy.

This year at the American Football Coaches Association Conference, with PIAA being the only organization in attendance from Hawaii while distributing over 5000 DVDs of Hawaii and American Samoa athletes, PIAA received an additional 120 college requests for video and combine results!

Many of the programs that have assisted our children are currently subject to mandatory budget cuts our schools are being forced to take because of the general economy and the limited tax resources available to the State of Hawaii. It is our intention to ensure that these essential, life changing programs are not eliminated.

The Legends of Kahuku live on now and we hope they will continue on well into the future. Those who live in the Kahuku area know of them….they are the teachers, the sports celebrities, the mentors and even just local people in the community that have directly impacted the lives of many. These legends have literally affected the lives of thousands of students and through our efforts we hope these legends will live well on into the future to inspire the hearts and minds of our youth.

We are the Ko’olauloa Educational Alliance Corporation, a 501(3)(c) non profit public charity that assists the students of Kahuku High and Intermediate School and its feeder elementary schools with opportunities to create the life skills necessary for a successful transition from school to career. These skills are developed through career exposure and training, sports and extra curricular activities, work programs and scholarships.

In solid performances through out the state tournament, Punahou and HBA cruise toward their respective Division I and II state titles.  Both teams did not drop a game in the tournament.  It was a year in which the Buff N Blu and Eagles dominated their division to the point where it was simply a matter of who would come in second.

Division I

The Buff n Blu got past the Kamehameha Warriors 3-0, ending a vey dominant season and state tournament.  Punahou should maintain or improve upon their #3 national ranking by ESPN RISE FAB 50 on ESPN.com.  The Warriors also appeared in the same poll at #9. 

Maddison Mckibbin, who will playing at NCAA runner up USC next year with his older brother Riley, did not disappoint his future coach Bill Ferguson, who was in attandance at Mckinley High School’s Student Council Gymnasium.  Mckibbin had 9 kills and 10 digs while also setting from the back row and receiving 11 serves without an error.

Sophmore Joshua Taylor may be a USC’s recruiting list after tallying 16 kills and hitting .700.

The taller Buff n Blu hitters, standing 6-7, 6-6, and 6-4, simply went over the smaller Kamehameha block.  Tough serving and an intmidating wall at the net forced the Warriors to hit a -.011.

Division II

The HBA Eagles made unprecedented steps this year by being noticed nationally – #7 ranking by ESPN.com  They too steamrolled past their opponents in the tournament.  They defeated Hilo 3-0 in such a methodic fashion that Hilo seemed defeated after game 1.

Ironically, considering their superior performance this season, the future looks bright for the Eagles.  Junior Ryan Leung hit .625 with 17 kills and 3 service aces.  The defense also limited Hilo to hitting only .097, with 4 of the Vikings hitting a negative percentage.

Division I

Kamehameha surprised OIA Champion Roosevelt with a 3-0 victory and advance to Saturday’s D-I state championship game against ILH rival Punahou.  The #1 seeded Buff n Blu also sweeped their opponent Kamehameha-Hawaii, 3-0.  Game time is set for 7:00p ant Mckinley High School Student Council Gymnasium.

The Warriors will try to play better then their last meeting with Punahou, a 3-0 loss on April 24 in which they were dominated by the taller ILH champions.

Division II

The real story in high school volleyball this year has been the fact that there are 2 schools which have been ranked nationally by ESPN.com.  Punahou is one, and the other is not Iolani or Kamehameha.  HBA has had one of the most dominant seasons in their short history and many feel that could have competed for the D-I state title.  The Eagles swept Moanalua 3-0 and wil play Hilo which needed 5 games to get past Seabury Hall.

HBA is the heavy favorite and the team evryone wants to watch.  The D-II championship game is set for 5:00p at Mckinley just prior to the D-I title game.

Division I

Mililani Trojan head coach Rose Antonio had one key for tonight’s game versus #1 seed Iolani.

“We need to get timely hitting.  Our pitching and defense will do alright.”

How about 13 hits and 10 runs.  I think that took care of the “timely hitting” request.  Pitcher Kishti Kamaka pitched a complete game, 2-hit shut out and the defense behind her committed no errors.  The Trojans defeated the Raiders 10-0 and move on to play Roosevelt tomorrow in an all-OIA finals.

That is good coaching.  She asked, and her players were more than willing to produce. Third baseman Celina Garces went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s to lead the Lady Trojans into their 5th consecutive Division I championship game.  Mililani won the state title in 2005 but have finished as runner-ups the last 3 years.

They no doubt want to end that streak in a very positive way.

Roosevelt proved why they are the OIA champions by shutting out the Baldwin Bears 3-0.  Roughrider pitcher Lianna Bajarin also pitched a gem of a game, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 11.

the Championship game looks to be a pitcher’s duel in a low scoring afair.  Possibly going into extra innings.  So arrive early in case the game goes by quick.  Or plan for a long night if it goes into overtime.  The stage is set for an intriguin state championship game.

Division II

The North Shore is most likely playing their music loudly in every car and home – and it is not because of Kahuku.  Waialua will be playing for their first ever state championship tomorrow against Kauai inthe D-II title game at UH Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Kauai defeated Kaiser 7-3 earlier in the day.

On a day of stellar pitching performances, Bulldog starter Marissa Keao allowed only 2 hits and struck out 7 enroute to a 2-0 shutout win and the opporunity to make history. 

Waialua, not a school to have dominated any sport since the days of the rural OIA, has struggled even more so since the shutdown of the last operating sugar mill on Oahu back in the late ’90’s.  Enrollment has decreased over the last 10 years and their athletic teams at best wuld have brief sparks of momentum.  In the end making any post season run in any sport was slim.

But the ladies of softball are going to carry the town on their shoulders with the hopes of bringing home the school’s first piece of hardware that may read “State Champion”.  Regardless of the resuly, here is hoping that this team is recognized as a special group for making in this far into the state tournament.

Hope and excitement is always a good thing.
