                Kahuku Overcomes Farrington, 27-7

The only 2 veteran quarterbacks in the ILH met up for
the first time this year.  Micah Mamiya, operating the St Louis vaunted
run and shoot with the â??Urban Meyer ground attackâ?, and Michael Hoke,
running the new Kamehameha balanced run and passing game.  But the
defensive units proved to be the dictator of field position in this
physical contest with the Crusaders defeating the Warriors 14-7 at
Aloha Stadium.

St. Louis Micah Mamiya last year against Kamehameha

Field position became vital as the game progressed
as both teams struggled offensively.  Penalties also proved to be
important keys as time and again the yellow flag either thwarted drives
or kept drives going for both teams.  Several passes were
incomplete due to jarring hits from the defensive backs on receivers.

St Louis scored first in the opening quarter on a 24-yard TD toss from
Mamiya to Tamatoa DeMello with 4:14 on the clock.

Then the Warrior defensive backs, playing mainly man defense, went into
shut-down mode. Chaz Bajet and Kevin Doo played tight one-on-one
coverage on the speedy Crusader receivers and limited Mamiya to a total
of only 103 yards passing.

Kamehameha answered back in the 2nd quarter.  A 45-yard
toss from Hoke to Carl Minns led to a 5-yard touchdown run from Truman
Chun, which tied the score at 7.

St Louis defensive linemen Geordan Hanohano and Ryan Eastman controlled
the line of scrimmage.  Eastman recorded 2 sacks and another tackle for
a loss.  Along with Hoâ??oikaika Cavaco-Amoy and linebacker Steven
Donohue, the defense limited Kamehameha to only 97 yards on the
ground.  Warrior running back Brandon Dumlao led the way with 12
carries and 66 yards.

Hoke kept drives moving with the passing game as he
threw for 175 yards, completing 15 of 25 attempts.  But the Crusader
defense frustrated the Warriors once they got into the red zone.

It wasnâ??t until early in the 4th quarter that St Louis broke the tie.
Aided by a pass interference and personal foul penalties on Kamehameha,
the Crusaders culminated a 55 yard drive with Austin Wakinekonaâ??s
4-yard run for a touchdown with 9:31 to play.

The Warriors had one last possession with 2:43
remaining starting at their own 18 yard line.  But an Eastman sack
of Hoke led to a 4th and 18 play with 1:27 to go.  As evidence of
the how this game flowed, Cavaco-Amoy sealed the victory for the
Crusaders with a sack.

These 2 teams will meet again and we could see another classic
defensive and strategic battle in the ILH.

AIEA AIR ATTACK UPSETS #7 WAIANAE, 30-20

AIEA AIR ATTACK UPSETS #7 WAIANAE, 30-20

David Kawada Digital Sports Hawaii Correspondent

>READ: Kahuku Overcomes Farrington, 27-7

Sept. 28th, 2007

On
a calm still night in Aiea Heights, Aiea quarterback Keenan Naeole
probably thought that this would be a good night to throw the
ball.  They did just that.  With one of the deepest receiving
corps in the state, Naeole and company, and a physical defensive front,
upset #7 ranked Waianae 30-20.

Seariders
regular starting quarterback Ben McQuown started the game at wide
receiver due to an arm injury.  Junior RJ Tacgere-Bailey got his
first start under center.

â??Ben is too good of an athlete.  We needed to find a position for
him in the game,â? said head coach Danny Matsumoto.

It started off shaky for McQuown.  Coming in as a punt returner,
he fumbled the first punt which Aiea recovered at the Searider 29 yard
line.  That led to the first score on the ensuing play, a TD pass
from Naeole to Aldodius Colquitt with just 39 seconds elapsed in the
1st quarter.

After a touchback on the kickoff, McQuown made up for that play in a
big way.  Lining up at right slot, he took the inside handoff and
blazed around the left corner for an electrifying 80-yard touchdown
run.  The kick failed but it was already 7-6 with only 52 seconds
into the game.  The game looked like it would be a shoot out.

But the home team defense, playing their final home game, had something
to say about that.  D-linemen Kanekoa Asing and Brennan Sato,
along with linebacker Patrick Mauga, and defensive back Josh Chung,
dominated the line of scrimmage and the passing lanes.
Tacgere-Bailey was held to only 45 yards in the air on 6 of 17 passing
attempts.  The vaunted Waianae running attack was also held in
check with 266 total yards.  Danny Kekoanui was the workhorse with
10 carries for 46 tough yards along with 4 catches for 29 yards.
Take away two 80-yard touchdown runs by McQuown (he had another
magnificent run at the end of the game from the quarterback
position),  and the defense only allowed 106 yards on the ground.

Colquitt was one of 6 receivers to catch a pass in the game.  He
tallied 8 catches for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Leading
receiver James Buchanan, who came into the game leading the state with
517 yards, suffered an injury that required paramedics to transport him
to a nearby hospital.  Trainers were not allowed to comment on the
injury.  The team said a prayer for him after the game.

With the defense shutting down Waianae, the Aiea offense did their part
as well.  Naeole led his team methodically down field with
precision passing from their wide open offensive attack.  It was
common to see empty backfields and 5 receivers flowing down the
field.  Naeole completed 21 of 30 passes, including at one point
hitting 11 completions in a row, en route to 245 yards and 3
touchdowns.  Buchanan had 3 catches before his injury. Bryan
Echalas also had 3 grabs.  Ezra Knight, Daniel Liilii, and Jack
Oliveros also added to the aerial yardage.

â??I have no favorites,â? said Naeole.  â??Iâ??ll get the ball to whoever
is open.â?

The biggest play may have been the 43-yard field goal by kicker Mason
Puckett late in the 4th quarter.   His team showed him their
love by chanting â??Puckett â?? Puckett â?? Puckettâ? after the game.

Waianae drops into a tie with Aiea at 3-2 in the competitive OIA Red
West Division.

â??Now this was what you call a team win,â? said Aiea head coach Wendall
Say.  â??Give yourselves a hand.â?

KAHUKU OVERCOMES FARRINGTON, 27-7

KAHUKU OVERCOMES FARRINGTON, 27-7

>READ: Aiea Air Attacks Upsets 7 Waianae, 30-20

Sept. 28th, 20007

Kahuku overcame a weekâ??s worth of adversity
off the field, plus twelve penalties on the field, to hold off
upset-minded Farrington, 27-7 Friday night on Homecoming night in
Kahuku.  The win kept the Red Raiders undefeated in the tough OIA
Red East and gave the Governors just their second loss in divisional
play.

â??Thanks for the support,â? Red Raider head
coach Reggie Torres said afterwards.  Torres felt the support of
both players and fans just a night after a community meeting in Kahuku
addressed a petition that was calling for the ouster of the second-year
head coach despite the fact that he guided the Red Raiders to a state
championship last season.

The
Hawaii Army National Guard donated $950.00 to the Kahuku Athletic
Department during half time as well as being Digital Sports Hawaii’s
Major Sponsor!  Kahuku High School’s Athletic Director Joseph
Whitford excepts the check.  Pictured left to right- Kingsley Ah

Torres allowed the players to perform the popular Haka
to its own Senior Night crowd before the game and that seemed to give
energy to the entire Red Raider team.  Then, Kahuku energized its
traditionally run-oriented offense by going to the air.

â??We run a lot, but our scheme was to come out
passing.  Weâ??ve been practicing a lot with our passing,â? said
Kahuku junior quarterback Jray Galeai, who completed 5 of 8 passes for
177 yards and three touchdowns in just three quarters of work.
His touchdown passes went to Junior Mataafa, Paipai Falemalu, and
6-foot 6-inch Willie Ching, who gave the Red Raiders breathing room
with a 3rd-quarter touchdown catch that pushed the score to 20-7.

Kahuku added a late touchdown when linebacker
Coleson Pukahi intercepted a pass from the endzone by Farrington
quarterback Alefiso Iâ??u and returned it three yards for the final score
of the game.

Kahuku Red Raiders (R-L)- #2 Shiloah Te’o, #16 Jray Galeai and #94 Jerome Acoba

The Red Raiders also got a stellar effort from
kicker/runningback St. John Lessary III, who carried the ball 11 times
for 124 yards and also kicked three extra points for a Kahuku program
that has been known to have problems in the kicking department over the
years.

â??Iâ??ve been kicking since back in Pop
Warner.  My Dad helped me a lot,â? said Lessary, whose father of
the same name was a runningback and defensive back on the powerful
Kahuku teams of the late â??80â??s.

Both Lessary and Galeai also credited a strong
performance by the enormous Kahuku offensive lineâ??a line that averages
well over 6-foot 3 and over 300 pounds from tackle to tackle.  â??It
was all the O-Line,â? Lessary said.  â??I trusted my line.  I
give them all the props,â? said Galeai.

The Faithful Farrington GOV’S FANS!

Kahukuâ??s win came despite an outstanding performance by
Iâ??u, the Governors quarterback, who completed 19 of 29 passes for 213
yards and a touchdown.  It was Iâ??u who completed six straight passes
right before halftime, including a 25-yard touchdown toss to Josh
Fernandez, to make it a 13-7 game at intermission.

But Iâ??u was injured late in the ballgame as he attempted to
scramble away from pressure.  He suffered a potentially season-ending
knee injury and had to be carried off the field by his teammates.  That
would be huge loss for the Governors as they head toward the OIA
playoffs.

Meanwhile, Kahuku appears to be headed towards
another Red East crown, but not without challenges both on and off the
field.

Such is life amongst the Red Raider Nation
where excellence and championships have almost come to be
expected.

Castle JV and Varsity Both Win In Two Over Kalaheo

Castle JV and Varsity Both Win In Two Over Kalaheo

Alan Linsky www.coach-photos.com for Digital Sports Hawaii

Sept. 26th, 2007

In a key division II OIA matchup, the Castle Knights travelled the short
distance to Kalaheo H.S.

In the first game, the Knights were able to maintain control and
importantly, a few point lead. The Knights then pulled away for a pretty
dominant 25-16 win.

The second game started out better for Kalaheo as it remained tight, with
Kalaheo even getting the lead a few times. But, as the game continued. the
Knights got some key shots in the important points. There were some
fabulous rallies along the way, but in the end it was 25-22 for Castle.

In the JV game preceding the Varsity, it was a close, fun match to watch as
the JV Knights also won in 2 games, 25-23 and 25-21.

9th Annual Iolani Cross Country Invitational Run At Ford Island – Sept. 22, 2007

9th Annual Iolani Cross Country Invitational Run At Ford Island – Sept. 22, 2007

Alan Linsky www.coach-photos.com for Digital Sports Hawaii

It wasn’t as hot as it could have been. But,
it was very windy and dry, which meant there was a lot of sand and dust
blowing around. Very tough running into that wind.

The course was mostly grass, but still pretty
fast since it was about as flat as you can get.

The competition was superb. With many teams
from the mainland and the OIA joining the ILH, the Iolani Invitational
is one of the largest, if not the largest local meet of the year,
usually with the toughest competition.

On the boys side at the varsity level, it was
Palos Verdes winning with 49 points. Lakewood (84 points) took second.
Local powerhouse, Leilehua, took 3rd place with Bryce Jenkins taking
3rd overall. Matt Duffy from St. Mary’s took 1st place with an excellent time of 15:58.
There were 3 local boys in the top 10. Joining Bryce was Matt Nakamoto
(5th – HBA), and Paul Williams (9th – Leilehua). Top 20 finishes were
turned in by Dawson Vorderbruegge (Kaiser), Nathan Nakatsuka
(Kamehameha), and Scott Motobu (Mid-Pacific).

     The
girls varsity was dominated by Redlands, who placed their top 5 at 1,
2, 8, 10 and 12 for a total of 33 points. Local school, Maryknoll, was
able to place second, a fabulous showing, with Haley Abing finishing at
5th overall. St. Mary’s (CA) took 3rd. Iolani was the next local school
to place at 5th.

The top local girl was Kristin Ali Keith (Mililani – 19:45), followed
by Haley (5th – Maryknoll), Maile Scarpino (7th-Iolani), Jenna Wong
(9th-Iolani), Claire Hann (11th-Maryknoll), Amelia Linsky (14th –
Iolani), Dayna Domingo (16th-Pearl City) and Savannah Lowrie
(18th-Leilehua).

The
JV boys race had the second most dominant finish of all when Palos
Verdes finished 1, 2, 3, 4 and 11 for 21 points. Almost a perfect
score! Henry M. Gunn was second with 49, and local team Kamehameha was
3rd with 74.

Individually, Palos Verdes had the first 4 places when Daniel Meyer,
Anthony Woods, Johnny Funnell and Chase Zukerman all finished in a
pack. Henry M. Gunn had the next 3 places. Borys Pleskacz (Iolani) was
the first local finisher at 8th place with a time of 18:08. Other local
top 20 finishers included Donzel Scott (Leilehua), Dan Kaneko
(Kamehameha), Matthew Dodge (Campbell), Joey Chun (Kamehameha), Grant
Kaima (Kamehameha), Greg Sikes-Mitchell (Radford), Kawai Akiona
(Kamehameha), and Robert Tamai (Iolani).

The
2 mile girls open race was won by Punahou School. Punahou had the most
dominant victory placing 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. For good measure they also
placed 7 and 9. Local teams also took second through fifth, St.
Andrew’s Priory, Radford, Iolani, and Maryknoll.

Megan Crowley of Redlands won this race with a superb time of 14:01.
But, Redlands didn’t have a scoring team so Amanda Tamanaha of St.
Andrew’s actually claimed the number 1 spot for scoring purposes. Then
it was 4 Punahou girls, Megan Steele, Sarah Hayashi, Brooke Laporte,
and Lahaina Zoller. Other top 20 finishers were Courtney Choy
(Punahou), Chelsea Chan (HBA), Carli Look (Punahou), Heidi Nicholls
(HBA), Gina Galante (St. Andrew’s), Lauren Wong (Punahou), Jayann
Gabrio (Punahou), Brie Adams (Maryknoll) and Nicole Valentini (St.
Andrew’s).

The
Iolani boys won the intermediate division in a close battle with Rivera
Middle School, 52-54. Kamehameha and Mililani weren’t too far behind,
finishing 3rd and 4th.

Local athletes took 15 out of the top 20 spots in the intermediate boys
race. All 5 of the spots they didn’t get were taken by Rivera, taking
1, 6, 14, 15 and 18. Iolani took 2, 3, 11, 12 and 24 to squeak out the
win.

The overall winner was Chris Alvarez of
Rivera, with a time of 12:01. Top 20 local finishers were Kasey Chun
and Justin Higa (Iolani), Kelvin Naito (Punahou), Collin Pido
(Kamehameha), Zachary Carvalho (Mililani), Ashton Maynes (Moanalua),
Joshua Freitas (Kamehameha), Jon Kim (HBA), Michael Diebold and Troy
Esaki (Iolani), Andrew Momohara (Mililani), Shaun Bissen (Kamehameha),
Harrison Oshiro (Punahou), Brad-George Gaison (Kamehameha) and Trenton
Dos-Santos Tam (Punahou).

I’m going to refrain from writing about the girls intermediate race for
now. There may be some changes coming on that front. Stay tuned…

the Mililani Trojans and it was packed!  Aiea opened up strong,
scoring on their opening drive.  Mililani answered right back with
their own touchdown.  It wasn’t until 3 minutes left in the game
that Mililani pulled ahead by a touchdown to win, 21-14.

Special teams and Homecoming.  Those were the difference factors Friday
night as the Mililani Trojans used two huge special teams plays on
Homecoming night to outlast Aiea, 21-14.

Sept. 21st, 2007

     Mililani, ranked in the top
five in the state in all the local high school football rankings,
didn’t earn their third straight victory until the final quarter.
A 40-yard punt return by senior defensive back Cody Kilthau set up a
one-yard touchdown from sophomore sensation Taz Stevenson to give the
Trojans the lead for good.  Earlier, a punt block by senior Kawika
Ornellas set up Mililani’s second touchdown in a game in which the
Trojans needed all the encouragement they could get from a large and
enthusiastic Homecoming crowd.

This is the Red West, Mililani Head
Coach Darnell Arceneaux said afterwards. These guys are
battle-tested.  Everyone knows their roles, their jobs.
These guys sacrifice for their team.  I feel privileged.

It was a win that almost didn’t happen for the
Trojans, who improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the extremely tough Red
West.  Aiea dropped to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

We made more mistakes and that cost us, said
Aiea coach Wendell Say, who explained that breakdowns on special teams
were especially costly, but he added, they’re just kids, we can’t really
blame them.

For awhile, it looked like Na Alii, led by one
of the top passing quarterbacks in the state in Keenan Naeole, might
come through with a big upset.  In Colt Brennan-like fashion,
Naeole carved up the Mililani secondary for 85 yards on Aiea’s first
offensive possession.  The 5-foot 7-inch senior completed five of
his first seven passes, capping it off with a 55-yard touchdown strike
to James Buchanan, as Na Alii took an early 7-0 lead with 9:45 left in
the first quarter.

Naeole finished the night 23 of 40 passing for
285 yards.  Buchanan caught four passes for 108 yards.

     Mililani answered right back.  Senior
quarterback Rustin Funakoshi marched his team down the field with a few
short passes to Stevenson and then finished the drive himself with a
32-yard touchdown run to get the Trojans back into the game and tie the
score at 7-all.  Funakoshi was 10 of 15 passing for 127 yards and
also added 60 more yards rushing.

The pendulum then swung Mililani’s way again at the
beginning of the second quarter.  That’s when Ornellas stormed
through the Aiea offensive line to block a Na Alii punt that gave
Mililani the ball on Aiea’s 31-yard line.  On the very next play,
Michael Among-Serrao took the Funakoshi handoff and raced 31 yards to
paydirt and a 14-7 halftime lead.

After a halftime filled with Homecoming
festivities, Aiea seized the momentum right back.  Na Alii drove
73 yards down the field capped off by a 3-yard run by junior fullback
Christian Kupau.  The extra point tied the game at 14-all with
2:21 left in the third quarter.

That’s when the game turned extremely tense
and the difference became special teams for both teams.

With just over nine minutes to play in the
game, a Mililani punt turned the tide.  Instead of taking a
touchback, Na Alii tried to field the punt and ended up pinned near
their own endzone at the three-yard line.  A few plays later, Aiea
punted from its own 24-yard line.

Kilthau took advantage of the great field
position and made it better.  The speedy Senior blazed his way for
a 40-yard return to put the Trojans in business.

Michael Among-Serrao, who finished the night
with 100 yards rushing on 20 carries, made a couple of key runs and put
the ball at the doorstep at the Aiea one-yard line.  That’s when
Stevenson came into the backfield.  The 6-foot 2-inch 185-pound
wide receiver/tailback, who finished with four receptions on the night
including a 14-yard key reception on the final drive, powered in the
final yard and Mililani had a tenuous 21-14 lead.

I give credit to our O-Line, said
Among-Serrao. We had a great week of practice for Homecoming.

But the game still had over four minutes left
and a controversial non-call on a Special Teams play almost gave Aiea a
huge chance. With only 3:14 left to play, Coach Say sent his punt team
out of getting the ball back again.  Aiea was then able to use its
timeouts to force the Trojans to punt with 57.4 seconds left in the
game.  That’s when the controversy happened as Mililani punter
Colin Lund was hit hard almost as soon as the ball left his foot.
The referees would not let their flags dictate the game’s final outcome
and did not bite on the roughing penalty.

That left 48.6 seconds left for the Na Alii
offense.  Naeole tried to get his team jump-started for a final
touchdown drive, but the Mililani defense stepped up to prevent that
from happening.  Four straight incompletions meant Mililani had
held on for a hard-fought 21-14 victory.

I just didn’t come through, Naeole said
afterwards.  Coach Say then lamented that it would not get any
easier as Aiea had both Waianae and Leilehua coming up.

For Mililani, they get a well-earned rest with
a bye-week next weekend, then its back to the conference wars against
Campbell and Radford.

As Coach Arceneaux said, no wins come easy for
anybody this season.  After all, this is the Red West.
