GBB BEDFORD SEMI: 3A #1 Rushville rallies to oust #5 Ev. Memorial, 60-49

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
BEDFORD – I am not sure “it” can be defined. I don’t know what causes “it.” But upon arrival, “it” is as real and tangible as the nose on your face.
“It” is what fuels the lightning-quick and lethal explosions of the Rushville Lions. In the Class 3A southern semistate played Feb. 27 at Bedford North Lawrence, “it” arrived with five and half minutes left to play and top-ranked Rushville desperately clinging to a 44-43 lead over No. 5 Evansville Memorial.
Eighty seconds later the lead was 53-45, and everybody in attendance knew the Lions were headed to the state finals. They dominated the final minutes after the deciding surge and ultimately won, 60-49.
It had to be a disheartening loss for Evansville Memorial. The Tigers executed their game plan perfectly for more than 26 minutes and had the game hanging in the balance before “it” showed up.
Memorial came into the contest wanting to shut down Rushville’s vaunted transition game and use its size advantage to score inside and control the boards. If they happened to get the Lions’ potent front line in foul trouble along the way, that was a bonus. They accomplished all of those things.
In the end, it was not enough to overcome “it”.
Let’s set the stage. Both teams showed some nerves at the outset of the game. Rushville’s were apparent in cold shooting during the first quarter, Memorial’s manifested by six first-quarter turnovers.
Still, the Tigers controlled the boards and shot well enough when they did get a shot to hold a 9-6 lead after one period.
Evansville Memorial’s Anna Hackert picked up her second foul early in the second quarter with the Tigers leading 12-8. With only one of the two towers of Memorial to deal with, Rushville (25-2) went on a quick 6-0 run.
With a streak was fueled primarily by Shelbie Justice, Rushville’s do-it-all forward, it was the only time all day the Lions got their running game going. But the good times were short-lived for the Lions as Justice picked up a second foul of her own with 4:25 left in the half, and the game once again changed complexion.
Memorial’s Mallory Ladd, a 6’2” offensive post machine, began to dominate inside for the Tigers. It appeared they would take control in the final minutes of the quarter. That is when Morgan Herbert, Rushville’s quiet assassin, first stepped forward.
She hit two huge jumpers – one a 3-pointer – late in the half to send Rushville to intermission with a 25-21 lead. Much of that advantage could be attributed to five more Tiger turnovers caused by the Rushville defense in the second stanza.
It seemed Evansville Memorial (23-4) had found the solution to its turnover problems as the third quarter progressed. The Tigers committed only one miscue in the first six minutes of the period, and they also found some unexpected help from their back court.
With Rushville’s defense draped all over Ladd, Memorial guards combined to drain four 3-pointers in the middle minutes of the third period. The barrage twice gave Memorial five-point leads.
In both cases, however, the Quiet One came to the rescue. Herbert hit a trey to bring the Lions within two at 36-34, and the second time she hit a jumper to cut the margin back to three at 39-36.
The Lions defense did the rest, causing two late turnovers to close within one at 41-40 after three periods.
Rushville began the fourth quarter by going to its bread and butter, Justice. She twice methodically made her way to the bucket on drives and put the Lions up 44-42.
Then disaster seemingly struck.
Justice picked up her fourth foul with 6:03 remaining and headed to the Rushville bench, and Memorial sank a charity toss to cut the lead to one. At the other end, senior Alexa Bess fired an air ball from beyond the arc.
Rushville was in trouble.
The “it” came riding to the rescue. The Lions got a defensive stop and broke to the offensive end. Herbert found Bess in the corner, and the senior tried again from 3-point land.
This one found nothing but net, and the ball might as well have glowed with a big red “R” as it nestled through the net. The fuse had been lit.
Ladd responded with an inside bucket for Memorial, but Herbert immediately hit another three for the Lions. Then Rushville caused a turnover and added an old-fashioned three-point play. In just over a minute, nine points and renewed defensive pressure had given Rushville the game’s largest lead in either direction.
The huge Rushville following was on its feet, and the Tigers were shell-shocked. They would never recover in the closing minutes.
Justice ended the semistate victory with a hard-earned 21 points, while Herbert added 16. Bess had nine points, including the magical 3-pointer to start the rally.
The folks in Rushville may not be able to define or know what causes its hardwood magic, but you can rest assured they will do everything in their power to make sure the Lions pack ”it” for their trip to Fort Wane and the state finals.
That will come at 6 p.m. ET March 6 against eighth-ranked Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran (23-3), one of three Fort Wayne schools to make the finals set this year in their city for the first time. The Cadets defeated No. 14 Griffith, 54-36, to advance past the Elkhart Central Semistate.

GBB REG. 7: 3A #1 Rushville thumps Western Boone, Roncalli for crown

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
Technical difficulties prevented the posting of this story till now; we apologize …
FORTVILLE – Class 3A top-ranked Rushville claimed the Mt. Vernon (Fortville) Regional title Feb, 20 with a 50-38 victory over No. 12 Roncalli. The triumph brings the Lions one step closer to an elusive state title and sets up a Bedford North Lawrence Semistate affair with No. 5 Evansville Memorial this coming Saturday.
Hoosier Authority attended what appeared on paper to be the marquee contest of this regional, Rushville’s semifinal battle with Western Boone. Having covered the Lions in their sectional championship game with Hamilton Heights, it is unusual for us to report on the same team two games in a row.
However, it is hard not to get caught up in what this Rush County community so obviously believes is a pursuit of destiny. After Saturday morning, the Stars would probably not argue that assessment after Rushville dispatched the Stars, 69-52.
Western Boone entered the game 18-4 overall and fresh from a sectional where it had downed 11th-ranked Crawfordsville for the second time this season. The Stars were led by Indiana Junior All-Star candidate Brandy Woody.
It took little time for the Rushville defense to set the tone of this one. The Lions spent most of the first half smothering the Stars in the half court and making dribbling the ball a chore on each and every trip. Rushville raced to a 19-6 advantage after one quarter and a 34-17 margin at halftime.
That was despite senior leader Shelbie Justice fighting first-half foul trouble.
It seemed Rushville was on the brink of putting the game entirely out of reach when the Lions increased the lead to 40-20 midway through the third quarter. The Stars weren’t ready to go quite that quietly, though.
Western Boone hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 13-6 closing run that cut the margin to 46-33 heading into the final period. And WeBo wasn’t done.
The Stars used another run, this one 11-2 midway through the fourth, to close within 60-51 with 2:42 to play. The charge was fueled by a full-court press that obviously gave Rushville some problems.
But it takes more than a few problems to shake this Lions squad. Rushville connected on successive baskets in the next 40 seconds to finally put the verdict to rest.
As usual, it was the incredible balance on offense that spurred Rushville. The Lions placed four players in double figures, led by Alexa Bess with 19 points. Morgan Herbert added 17, while Justice had 16 and Morgan Hittle 11.
Woody led Western Boone with 18 points, most of those in a stellar second-half performance. She was aided by 17 markers from sophomore Sarah Brewer.
Should Rushville advance past Evansville Memorial – what looks to be the marquee game of the eight-game semistate round – the Lions would face the winner of the 3A Elkhart Central Semistate battle between No. 14 Griffith (19-5) and No. 8 Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran (22-3) for the state championship March 6 in Fort Wayne.
7. Mt. Vernon (Fortville) Regional
Game 1 – #1 Rushville 69, Western Boone 52
Game 2 – #12 Roncalli 45, Greensburg 42
Championship – #1 Rushville 50, #12 Roncalli 38
4. Bedford North Lawrence Semistate
1A – #7 Waldron (22-3) vs. #1 Vincennes Rivet (25-0). 1p ET

GBB SEMISTATES: The Saturday lineup

From ihsaa.org

Sixteen teams will battle Feb. 27 for the right to play for a state championship as the 35th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament rolls on to the semistate round. Each of the four sites will host a doubleheader, with two of last year’s state champs in position to get back to the state finals to defend their crowns.

Class 4A top-ranked Ben Davis (26-0) would tie the state record for consecutive victories with a win over No. 4 Floyd Central (25-1) in the second game at Southport. The Giants won all 30 games last season, and a victory on Saturday evening would equal the mark of 57 set by Fort Wayne Northrop from 1985-87.

No. 2 Fort Wayne Canterbury (23-2), the two-time defending Class A champion, will have a shot at a third straight title if it can get by fourth-ranked Turkey Run (20-5) at the Warsaw Semistate. Top-ranked Vincennes Rivet (25-0), which fell to Canterbury in last year’s title game, is attempting to get back to the state championship game but will have to fend off No. 7 Waldron (22-3) at Bedford North Lawrence.

Top-ranked Rushville (24-2) will try to end the longest semistate championship drought this weekend when it takes on No. 5 Evansville Memorial (23-3) in Class 3A action at Bedford North Lawrence. The Lions last played in the state finals in 1993, falling in the afternoon semifinal game.

No. 12 Fort Wayne Luers (17-7), which takes on Winamac (19-6) in 2A action at Warsaw, will look to win a state-best seventh semistate crown. The Knights have also won a state-record five championships, the last coming in 2006 in 3A.

GBB REG. 14: 2A #4 Turkey Run dumps Central Catholic, 46-32, for title

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
Technical difficulties prevented the posting of this story till now; we apologize …
SHARPSVILLE – The celebration was three years in the making. Turkey Run finally claimed the regional championship that had been so elusive the past two seasons.
Perhaps a little role reversal helped the Class A fourth-ranked Warriors. The past two seasons, Turkey Run has met Lafayette Central Catholic in the first round of the 1A regional. The Warriors won both contests, only to lose each time to Southern Wells in the title tilt.
This time, Central Catholic handled Southern Wells in the opening round, and the matchup with the Knights came in the Feb. 20 championship contest. The result was a 46-32 Turkey Run victory and the school’s first regional title for either the boys or girls.
The nightcap at Tri-Central was far closer than the score indicates, and the victorious Knights may well be questioning themselves with “what ifs” for some time to come. The Knights contributed greatly to their own demise by missing a total of 14 shots within five feet of the bucket.
Much of that futility can be chalked up to the Warrior defense. It is one thing to get the ball in scoring position and quite another to get good shots. Nearly every Central Catholic attempt in the paint was challenged by the tight Turkey Run resistance.
The most crucial point in the game may well have seemed innocent at the time. Turkey Run used a 5-0 run late in the first quarter to extend an 8-7 lead to 13-7. Central Catholic closed within 15-10 at the end of the first stanza, but the Knights would never get closer than three the remainder of the night.
The Knights’ frustration was most apparent in the second quarter. Turkey Run’s most potent offensive weapon, junior Chelsea Francis, picked up her second foul with six minutes left in the period. Warriors coach Sam Karr did his best to substitute her in on offense and out on defense the remainder of the half.
Despite opportunities, Central Catholic was unable to take advantage of her absences or tag her with a third foul. Turkey Run, which had drilled No. 13 Randolph Southern by a 47-28 count to make the championship game, reached intermission with the same five-point lead it held at the first stop.
The contest remained close throughout the third quarter, and it appeared the ultimate frustration might belong to Turkey Run. The Warriors squandered four opportunities late in the quarter to extend the margin to double digits.
As the clock wound down, Lafayette had possession of the ball and was due to receive it again to start the fourth period. The Warriors’ defense again came to the rescue. They caused a jump ball in the waning moments of the quarter to change the possession arrow, then shut down the Knights on their last chance of the stanza.
Turkey Run finally broke through by scoring the first four points of the fourth quarter and extending the advantage to 12 points. From that point until the end of the game, it often appeared half the Turkey Run student body was clogging the lane at the Central Catholic end of the floor.
Unable to go inside where their offense was the most potent, the Knights dented the scoreboard for only two points until the final minute of the game.
Afterward, coach Karr told Hoosier Authority he credited the victory to his team’s defensive effort and a more tough-minded approach than they had brought to the regional the last two seasons.
Francis ended the game with 22 points, which made her the only double-figure scorer on either team. Turkey Run will now face defending state champion No. 2 Fort Wayne Canterbury in Saturday’s Warsaw Semistate, with the winner battling either seventh-ranked Waldron (22-3) or unbeaten No. 1 Vincennes Rivet (25-0) for the state championship March 6 in Fort Wayne.
14. Tri-Central Regional
Game 1 – Lafayette Central Catholic 45, Southern Wells 38
Game 2 – #4 Turkey Run 47, #13 Randolph Southern 28
Championship – #4 Turkey Run 46, Lafayette Central Catholic 32
2. Warsaw Semistate
1A – #2 Fort Wayne Canterbury (23-2) vs. #4 Turkey Run (20-5). 4p
2A – Winamac (19-6) vs. #12 Fort Wayne Luers (17-7). To follow

Fa’asoa family brings Kaimuki a title

By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

Every time Kaimuki faced a new challenge in the postseason, coach Mona Fa’asoa had the right recipe.

This time, her strategy brought Kaimuki a state championship.

With 20 points from Dejah Fa’asoa and 11 from Letishah Fa’asoa — both daughters of the coach — the Bulldogs toppled defending champion Molokai 41-32 in the final of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division II State Championships last night at Blaisdell Arena.

It is the first girls basketball state crown for Kaimuki, which placed third last year.

“Molokai’s a great team. We just tried to work off their mistakes and not rush anything,” coach Fa’asoa said. “We wanted them to come out and play ‘D’ on us. We have a lot of scoring factors.”

“They were the better team tonight,” Molokai assistant coach Mike Hooper said.

Kaimukī captures DII Title

By Stanley Lee
Advertiser Staff Writer

At the end of the game, Dejah Fa’asoa gave her player of the game plaque to teammate Pua Akaka. Without Akaka, Fa’asoa said Kaimukī wouldn’t have won last night’s state title.

On a small, tight-knit team where they consider each other as family, it was only the right thing to do when the Bulldogs espouse rising and falling together.

“Without her in the game, we probably would’ve lost,” said Fa’asoa, who scored 20 points in second-seeded Kaimukī’s 41-32 win over defending champion and No. 1 seed Moloka’i in last night’s title game of the Hawaiian Airlines Division II Girls Basketball State Championships at the Blaisdell Arena.

Fa’asoa received the award issued by OC-16. “She did so well, she played really good defense. Without her, our defense wouldn’t have worked.”

Letishah Fa’asoa, Dejah’s older sister, had 11 points for the Bulldogs (16-2), who came together over the course of the season. Coach Mona Fa’asoa, Letishah’s and Dejah’s mother, said her team, which had just eight active players last night, would frequently text message each other at night about the following day’s practices or meals. Coach Fa’asoa said the texting was at times irritating, but it bonded the squad.

Lahainaluna leaves with title

By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

At Lahainaluna, there’s no getting away from family and friends.

In fact, they will track and follow their Lunas across the ocean out of loyalty. That fact turned into motivation for the Lahainaluna Lady Lunas, who rallied from an 11-point deficit for a stunning 47-45 win over defending champion Konawaena last night in the final of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division I State Championships.

The Lunas rallied from 11 down.

“I told the girls, ‘How badly do you want this?’ It’s surreal,” Lahainaluna coach Todd Rickard said. “It just proves that even if you’re from the neighbor islands, if you put the work in required and training in the offseason, it can happen. It can really happen.”

The win came with a tinge of controversy when Lia Galdeira’s pull-up jumper to tie the game was ruled no good after a blocking foul. If the shot had counted, the game would have been tied at 47 with a free throw for the Wildcats sophomore.

Instead, Konawaena had the ball down 47-45 with 2 seconds left. An inbounds pass from under the basket from Dawnyelle Awa to Galdeira in the paint was deflected and caromed away as time expired.

Center Milika Taufa, sensing her last opportunity, brought the championship trophy home for the Lunas (26-2). The 6-foot senior poured in 26 points, including 21 in the second half, to lead Lahainaluna to its first girls hoops state crown.
