RADFORD GIRLS FINISH UNBEATEN OIA SEASON

By Bob Hogue

FOR MORE GIRLS BASKETBALL COVERAGE, CLICK HERE TO GO TO OUR GIRLS BASKETBALL SPORTS CENTRAL.

UNDEFEATED!  That’s how Radford finished the OIA season Thursday night, as the Lady Rams ripped Aiea in the season finale, 56-43.  TaNitra Byrd came off the bench to lead the way with 18 points and Marlena Malepeai added 10 more.

“It feels good.  These are a good bunch of girls,” said Radford first-year head coach  Tani Dutro.  “We were hoping for a close, physical game and Aiea really gave us one.”

In fact, Aiea played very tough, especially in the first half.  Capri Holiona, Carol Sio, and Jennifer Yeun each scored two baskets apiece for Na Alii in the first quarter, as the Rams and Na Alii played a fast-paced game with the score tied at 17-all after the first stanza.

Then, with the score knotted up at 21-all with about 5 minutes remaining before halftime, the 6-foot 1-inch Byrd, a second-team all-state selection a year ago as a freshman, took over inside.  TaNitra scored six of the Rams next eight points, including two on a perfect lob pass inside the lane on an inbounds play and Radford went into intermission leading 29-21.

The Rams stretched that lead into the second half as Chelsea-Ann Villanueva, Marsharen Dupont, and Bui Barivilala scored on consecutive baskets and the 14-point run over two quarters gave Radford a 35-21 advantage.

Aiea battled back, however, with Holiona putting on a show in the paint.  She finished with a team-high 10 points.  When Natasha Helsham scored on a breakaway layaup, Na Alli had pulled to within seven points at 46-39.

But once again, Byrd made an impact, scoring eight big points in the fourth quarter, including a breakaway layup to seal the game, and the Rams finished the OIA season with a perfect 12-0 mark.  Aiea finished at 8-4.

“It feels really good,”  Byrd said afterwards.  “Our girls really worked hard.  We’ve still got the post-season to go.”

“She gives us a boost out there,” Coach Dutro said.  “She was out the entire pre-season (due to injury) and it took awhile for her to get back into shape.  By then, the other girls had earned their (starting) spots and that meant she would see what was happening out there and come in and play her role.  She really stepped up.”

Next up for Radford will be the OIA tournament where Dutro’s Rams will enter as the top seed from the West.

“I’m worried about a bunch of the teams,” Dutro said.  “Farrington is really physical and they match up well with us in that department.  Roosevelt can shoot, Kalani can shoot.  It’s going to be a challenge.”

“We struggled a lot during the pre-season,” she added. (The Rams were 5-6 before conference play.)  It was hard during the beginning of the season, but we learned to trust each other, and the girls stuck together.  They needed to learn to stick with me and I needed to learn to stick with them.  We’ve come a long way.”

All the way to a perfect conference season!

The wrestling “post-season” is about to begin this Friday with the OIA Wrestling Dual Championships.  The event will be held at Moanalua High School starting at 5:30p.

Both the junior varsity and varsity squads for boys and girls will compete.

For the Boys, Kaiser and Pearl City claim the top seeds for the East and West respectively.  The Cougar wrestlers have an undefeated record of 10-0.

The girls leaderboard shows Kahuku and Kapolei holding the #1 seeds.

With the Red Raider and hurricane boys teams holding the #2 seeds, both schools could feasibly take the titles for each gender.

Obviously Farrington and Campbell will have something to say about that.

View attached documents for the CURRENT TEAM STANDINGS and the schedule for the OIA DUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS on Friday.

Mid Pac Falls to Lady Raiders, 48-43

by Al Linsky – for Digital Sports Hawaii

For more sports photos, go to www.coach-photos.com, or www.iolani-events.org.

With Jamie Smith on the sidelines with a broken nose and minor concussion,
it was time for the rest of the Raiders to step up and figure out a way to
beat a pesky Owl team without their leading scorer and rebounder.

The first quarter saw a lack of scoring from both teams as it ended with a
5-4 score, advantage Raiders. But, as the game went on, the bigger Owls
started scoring more from down low. It was 16-16 at the half.

By the end of the third quarter, the Owls had taken the lead at 27-25 and
also had the momentum.

With 4:23 left in the final quarter, it was 32-27 for the Owls. At 2:36
left it was 37-29 for the Owls. At this point, a lesser team would have
folded up their tent and gone home as it was looking very bleak. But, the
maturity on the senior laden Raiders team showed through, the defensive
pressure increased, and the Owls were forced into errors that turned into
points for the Raiders.

The Raiders went on an 8-0 run to tie it at 37-37 with a few seconds to go.
A shot at the buzzer missed and the game went into overtime. The Raiders
owned the overtime outscoring the Owls 11-6 for the victory.

Kylie Ahloa had a big scoring night for the Raiders with 17, followed by
Dayna Jandoc with 10, Chanel Hirata 9, Hailey Maeda 6, Lahela Usui 4 and
Tami Konishi 2. The Raiders made 7 three pointers.

The Owls were led by Keaton McFadden with 11, Jenna Savusa 10, Ashley
Yamachika 8, Jordan Kealoha 7, Johnelle Kapua 4 and Paige Young 3. The Owls
made 4 three pointers

IOLANI BOYS ROUGH UP KAMEHAMEHA, 59-45

With the game and the ILH-lead on the line in the fourth quarter
Tuesday night, Taylor Mounts stepped up big-time, scoring 15 of his game-high 25
points in the final stanza and Iolani whipped Kamehameha, 59-45.  Mounts’
heroics sent the Warriors to their third loss in conference play; the Raiders
and idle Punahou each have only two losses and stand in a virtual tie for first
place in the standings.

“We needed to win,” Mounts said afterwards.  “Doc (Mugiishi, the
Iolani head coach) told us at halftime that somebody’s got to step up.  I just
got more and more confident as the game moved along.”

“We rely on him; he’s a good pressure-breaker,” said Mugiishi.  “It
was a very intense, very physical game.”

Iolani surged in front early, with Mounts scoring eight points in the
first quarter.  And when his back-up, Nick Christman, scored on a tough move in
the lane, the Raiders led by 14 points, 20-6, after the first period.

But the Warriors rallied back to make it a tight game.  First, it was
Pi’I Minns with a couple of big buckets on a 9-0 Warriors’ run in the second
quarter, and then it was Edmund Kanao and Auwae DeRego combining for nine
straight points in the third quarter as Kamehameha pulled to within 29-27 with
about five minutes left in the third.

That’s when Iolani’s pressure defense made an impact.  Kela Marciel
got a steal and a breakaway layup, and Pablo Warner followed with another
breakaway, as the Raiders pushed their lead to seven points.  But Brandon Dumlao
hit a 30-footer at the third-quarter buzzer, a huge three-pointer, to make it a
four-point game with Iolani on top, 38-34.

The fourth quarter belonged to Mounts and Warner.  The 6-foot 6-inch
Mounts, who is being recruited by a couple of DIII teams in the Northwest,
scored seven straight points to open the period, and then Warner, who finished
the night with 14 points, had back-to-back breakaway layups to push the lead to
double digits.

Kamehameha refused to surrender, however, and when Kawika Lyons
nailed a three-pointer from the wing with just under a minute left, the Warriors
trailed by only six, 51-45.  After that, though, Mounts sealed the Iolani win
with eight straight free throws and the Raiders ended up winning by a final
difference of 14 points.

“He’s a very good free throw shooter,” Mugiishi said.  “All of them
were important.”

“It’s become a whacky race,” Mounts said of the current ILH boys
basketball race.  “It’s almost like the BCS; everybody who’s number one keeps
getting knocked off.”

Right now, Punahou and Iolani are at number two and three in the state
rankings, and most importantly, tied for number one in the ILH.  Only time will
tell who stands there when the conference race wraps up it’s “whacky” finish
next week.

Girls State Soccer Tournament Starts Tomorrow

SEE TOURNAMENT BRACKETS ATTACHED BELOW

Kamehameha and Roosevelt come into the Division I and II Tournaments as the #1 Seeds respectively for the 2008 JN Automotive HHSAA Girls State Soccer Tournament.  The Tournament gets under way tomorrow at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park and Stadium.

The Lady Warriors, with a 10-2-0 record, got the nod as the top seed over OIA Champion Pearl City with an undefeated record of 14-0-1.  Kalani stumbled a bit in the OIA playoffs but hope to regain some momentum coming through the first round against a tough Punahou squad.  Also look out for MIL Champion Kamehameha-Maui who came out of the tough Maui league at 13-1-0.  Mililani, the 2nd place representative from the OIA, has battled Pearl City all year and will look to overcome their West Division nemasis in the Tournament.

In the Division II brackets,  the Lady Roughriders look like the team to beat.  At 12-1-0, they were dominant in the OIA.  Kamehameha-Big Island and Kapaa are the only 2 undefeated teams in the brackets.  Campbell and Waialua round out the tough OIA representation.  It would seem that the Division II Champion may come from that league.
