The Hawaii Army National Guard and the Hawaii Youth
Rugby Association is proud to announce the Hawaii Youth Rugby State Championship Tournament.

USA Rugby and The Hawaii Army National Guard
officially announced the extension of its partnership agreement with
the Hawaii Youth Rugby Association for the 2009 season. Through the
Rugby Kit Campaign, USA Rugby and the Hawaii Army National Guard have
provided field equipment and uniforms to several qualified Hawaii rugby
clubs. This gesture has afforded much of Hawaii’s youth an opportunity
to participate and enjoy the sport of Rugby. More importantly, it has
helped to establish the solid infrastructure and stability necessary
for rugby to continue to grow throughout the Hawaiian Islands.

The National Guard partnership will build upon the
foundation of rugby in the State of Hawaii, allowing players and
coaches to become better in their sport and in their communities. This
program will continue to create better leaders with the strength of
character and mental toughness that embodies the values of the Hawaii
Army National Guard, USA Rugby, and the Hawaii Youth Rugby Association.

Niumatalolo-coached Navy meets Obama

Advertiser Staff and News Services
Honolulu Advertiser

WASHINGTON — President Obama yesterday welcomed Navy’s football team — which is coached by former Radford High and University of Hawai’i athlete Ken Niumatalolo — to the White House and presented the Midshipmen the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, awarded yearly to the winner of the competition among the three major service academies.

It is the sixth straight year in which Navy has won the trophy.

Obama talked to Niumatalolo and another local product who plays for Navy.

“Coach Ken, thank you. We were just talking — he’s another local boy from Hawai’i. … I want to congratulate coach Ken … the first Samoan American head coach in the history of Division I-A, just the third Navy coach since World War II to have a winning record in his first season.

“Your starting quarterback is also Hawaiian. … I hear Kaipo (Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada) is a pretty easy-going guy. He doesn’t get rattled easily, performs under pressure. That’s the Hawaiian spirit. That’s how we roll.”

Raiders capture ILH crown

By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

Defense just won ‘Iolani another championship.

Behind Sheldon Lee’s craftsmanship and a golden-gloved defense that turned two double plays, ‘Iolani blanked Kamehameha 7-0 at Ala Wai Community Park yesterday to capture the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title.

It was a fitting end to the regular season for longtime Raiders coach Dean Yonamine, who announced in January plans to retire after this year.

“I don’t want to be poetic or anything, but I know the kids have been talking about it and they want to do this for me, but it’s not about me. It’s for them and especially the seniors,” Yonamine said.

‘Iolani captured its first league title since 1997 and sealed a state-tournament berth — a first since 2001.

“Credit to the kids. We came out flat on Saturday (in a loss to Punahou). No practice or anything because yesterday was Sunday, but you could tell they were determined,” Yonamine said.

Both teams finished the regular season 12-2, setting up yesterday’s showdown.

‘Iolani claims ILH regular-season title
By Wes Nakama
Honolulu Advertiser

Sheldon Lee scattered six hits in a seven-inning shutout and Buen Hatanaka had a double and two sacrifice flies yesterday as ‘Iolani blanked Kamehameha, 7-0, for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular season title and its first state tournament berth since 2000.

The victory at Ala Wai Field improved the Raiders — ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser’s statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — to 13-2 in ILH play and earned them the No. 1 seed in the league tournament which begins tomorrow.

“It’s a big relief,” said ‘Iolani senior first baseman Reyn Nagamine, a four-year starter. “Ever since I was on the varsity as a freshman, this was one of our goals, because (the Raiders) haven’t been to the state tournament for a while. It’s nice to see us come together and see all the hard work finally paid off.”

‘Iolani got some help from the No. 3-ranked Warriors, who fell to 12-3 after forcing yesterday’s one-game playoff with a victory over Maryknoll on Saturday.

KAMEHAMEHA (12-3) 000 000 0—0 6 3

‘IOLANI (13-2) 003 400 X—7 8 0

Alika Pruett, Chris Pascual (4) and Keanu Carmichael. Sheldon Lee and Grant Iwamoto. W — Lee. L — Pruett.

Leading
hitters — Kamehameha: Kalei Hanawahine double; Pi’ikea Kitamura double.
‘Iolani: Breland Almadova 3-4, 2 runs; Buen Hatanaka double, 2 RBIs;
Kela Marciel 2 runs.
