KHON2 Go Johnny Go featuring 2009 Team Aloha

(PHOENIX) – Team Aloha, the all-star girls basketball squad representing Hawaii, concluded their participation in the 2009 Arizona Elite tournament this weekend at Arizona State University with three victories against two losses.

The Hawaii girls had two early victories, a 52-38 Thursday scrimmage win against the Spokane Stars Blue, followed by another 40-28 win against Team Concept Fire.  But the team suffered a 39-35 loss in the second round of the tournament against the same Spokane Stars Blue, which had earned a bye as the top-seeded team in the event’s all-star division.

That loss sent Team Aloha into the consolation bracket on Saturday morning.  The girls bounced back from the previous day’s loss to post a 48-37 victory over the Arizona Elite-Drake girls.  Three hours later, the team faced the Baden Elite squad.  Team Aloha lost on a last-minute three-pointer in overtime, 37-35, to end their quest for a third consecutive title.  Baden Elite went on to win a consolation championship.

Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, who joined head coach Dana Takahara-Dias on the bench, said, “Overall, I think we achieved our purpose, which was to expose our underclassmen to college scouts.  This is the largest NCAA-sanctioned tournament west of the Mississippi at this time of year, and a number of coaches and scouts from schools across the nation approached us to tell us how impressed they were with the play of our girls.

“This year we decided to play in the aptly named all-star division, which features the very best teams from throughout the western states.  We played very well against the top club squads from Spokane, Phoenix, and Portland.

“I’ve said time and time again that our girls can compete against the best in the nation, and our continued competitiveness shows the caliber of home-grown talent we have.  It also bears mention that our participation in these sanctioned mainland tournaments has led to a number of our players—who otherwise might have escaped recognition because of limited exposure—coming to the attention of college recruiters.”

Keith Amemiya, executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association and sponsor of the trip, said, “I was very pleased to be a part again of Team Aloha.  Despite only a few practices under their belts, the girls were very competitive against many of the best club teams in the nation, teams that practice together throughout the year.  Our girls are exceptional athletes and our success, not only this year but in the past two events, showed that.”

Takahara-Dias added, “The college coaches told us how much they respected the hustle, fire, and positive attitude of our girls—and these have become traits that characterize our players.  While I wish the outcome could have included more victories, the girls played very hard, made the sacrifices to be on the team, and represented Hawaii with pride.  I think we acquitted ourselves well and demonstrated our ability to compete and earn the attention of college programs.”

Team Aloha won the consolation championship in the Arizona Elite tournament last year.  Two years earlier, Team Aloha won the prestigious Nike Storm + Swish Fall Shootout in Santa Barbara.

Prep boys basketball fab 15

The Honolulu Star Bulletin released their “Fab 15” high school boys basketball team this week. Leading the votes was their player of the year Pi’i Minns from state champion Kamehameha. Coach of the Year was the Warriors head coach Jesse Nakanishi. The 6-3 senior was joined by 6-5 teammate Micah Christenson who is the youngest and only sophomore on the list.

Iolani and Kaimuki, along with Kamehameha, tied for placing the most players on the Fab 15 with 2 each. Baldwin’s senior Lincoln Seto was the only outer island representative.

I had the honor to broadcast the thrilling state championship game between Kamehameha and Kahuku on radio. Pi’i Minns was on his way toward one of his worst games in the first half. He was held in check by the Red Raider defense with single digit scoring and almost had more turnovers than points.

But an interesting response came from head coach Nakanishi when I interviewed him after the game.

“We had to keep going back to Pi’i. He was struggling but I felt we needed to keep going back to him because he had been leading us all year.”

Minns overcame the early struggles and finished with 20 points, a chunk of which came in the last 5:00 minutes in which the Warriors reclaimed momentum and held on for the title.

A coach’s confidence in his player and the ability to overcome adversity – key ingredients for Player of the Year.

HBA soars past No. 1 ‘Iolani

The Eagles rode 12 kills by Ryan Leung for a stunning 27-25, 18-25, 25-19 upset of the Raiders last night

By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

It’s never been a question of faith for the Hawaii Baptist Eagles.

Eagles coach Teoni Obrey says it’s all about ferocity, as the No. 1-ranked ‘Iolani Raiders learned last night. HBA was composed and clutch when it mattered most, riding 12 kills by Ryan Leung for a stunning 27-25, 18-25, 25-19 upset win at Dan Liu Gym.

“Coach said today we proved we’re the best team in the state,” said Leung, a 6-foot-4 junior. “We plan to beat all the other teams.”

It was possibly the biggest win ever in the program’s history, knocking off a team that had upset previously top-ranked Punahou just days ago.

“We wanted to make a statement, definitely. When ‘Iolani beat Punahou, that fired us up more,” Obrey said, noting that his team had lost twice to the Raiders in preseason tournaments.

HBA, ranked third in the Star-Bulletin Boys Volleyball Top 10, improved to 8-1 as first-round play ended in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Division II Hawaii Baptist, a school of roughly 400 students, will diet on a menu of small-school opponents for the rest of the ILH season. Just getting to the point of developing a ****** instinct was one thing. Beating ‘Iolani for the first time since 2000 was simply monumental.

“We always say that we’re trying to play to win, to be aggressive,” said Obrey, an ‘Iolani graduate whose brother Kainoa was on the last ‘Iolani team that lost to HBA. “They kept their poise.”

Kyle Barretta, a 6-foot-7 senior, was one of the clutch performers. He had all six of his blocks in the third set and also tallied four kills. Brandon Kaneshiro added seven kills and West Hatae delivered three of his four kills in the final game.

No. 3 HBA stops No. 1 ‘Iolani

By Stanley Lee
Honolulu Advertiser

A win over top-ranked ‘Iolani was hardly an upset for Hawai’i Baptist.

Given the Eagles’ recent performances against their league’s top teams — which are the best in the state — and their powerful hitting combo of Ryan Leung and Branden Kaneshiro, the Eagles have nearly erased any doubt about their Division II classification.

Especially after the loud cheers following last night’s win.

Leung had 13 kills, Kaneshiro added seven and host Hawai’i Baptist rallied from a second-set letdown to beat No. 1 ‘Iolani, 27-25, 18-25, 25-19, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu volleyball match last night.

The third-ranked Eagles, the highest ranked Division II team in the Advertiser’s statewide poll, improved to 8-1.

David Fink had 10 kills and Chris Llarenas added nine for the Raiders (10-2).

‘Iolani is the defending Division I state champion while HBA won the Division II title.

“Not at all,” said Leung, when asked if his team’s win was an upset.

“Our defense, we dug a lot of balls and we blocked a lot of balls,” Leung said. “We got a lot of touches on blocks.”

Hawai’i Baptist beat No. 4 Kamehameha in an ILH match earlier this season and took No. 2 Punahou to three sets before falling. ‘Iolani beat then-No. 1 Punahou last Thursday.
