The event will run from 2 to 7 p.m.

All ILH football players who played at Honolulu Stadium from 1940-59 can attend, along with ILH coaches.

Among those planning to attend are Harry Pacarro (Punahou alum), Henry George (Roosevelt) and Ray Schoenke (Punahou), who played for the Washington Redskins and is coming from Maryland.

The old ILH consisted of four private schools (‘Iolani, Kamehameha, Punahou and Saint Louis) and four public schools (Farrington, Kaimuki, McKinley and Roosevelt). The private and public schools split in 1970 with the public schools joining rural schools to form the O’ahu Interscholastic Association.

Saint Louis turns back Leilehua’s rally, 28-21

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

WAHIAWA — Jeremy Higgins completed 19 of 32 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns last night, helping Saint Louis hold off Leilehua, 28-21, in nonleague action at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.

The Crusaders improved to 3-0; the defending state runner-up Mules fell to 1-2.

The game featured two of the state’s top quarterbacks, Higgins and Leilehua’s Andrew Manley — The Advertiser’s State Co-Offensive Player of the Year in 2008. Manley finished 17 of 28 for 187 yards and two TDs, and his 20-yard scamper for a score helped the Mules close to 28-21 with 8:17 remaining.

Warriors’ defense shuts down Seariders

By Kalani Takase
Advertiser Staff Writer

WAI’ANAE — Kamehameha head coach David Stant expects a lot out of his defensive players.

Last night he got just about everything he could out of them in a defense-dominated 13-0 win over host Wai’anae in a nonleague game at Raymond Torii Field.

The fourth-ranked Warriors improved to 3-0 while allowing just 116 yards of total offense. The Seariders, ranked sixth in The Advertiser’s Top 10 poll, fell to 1-2.

“A win is a win, but you know, having a defense like ours allows us to take more chances with things like field position,” said Stant, a former Kahuku and University of Hawai’i defensive lineman. “I can’t say enough about our defense, they’re just playing phenomenal right now.”

‘Iolani scores winning TD as time expires

Kevin Barayuga caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jarrett Arakawa as time expired yesterday to lift ‘Iolani to a pulsating 23-21 nonleague victory over Kapolei at Eddie Hamada Field.

The defending Division II state champion Raiders improved to 2-1; the Hurricanes fell to 1-2.

Kapolei took a 21-17 lead with 1:06 remaining on Noah Pascua’s 19-yard TD pass to Donnie King and Eric Morales’ extra point. But ‘Iolani went 71 yards in 10 plays after the ensuing kickoff, capped by Arakawa’s quick throw to Barayuga on an out pattern to the right side.

“The play was run for him to get open,” said Arakawa, a senior who completed 22 of 37 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown and ran for another TD. “That’s what we always play for — to do it with the game on the line.”

KAILUA-KONA — After going winless in three home games last week, the opening weekend of prep football, the Maui Interscholastic League got an 18-8 victory from King Kekaulike High School over Kealakehe on the road Saturday.

Na Alii (1-1) took the lead on a 61-yard run by Charles Spencer, and Taylor Deguerra added a 2-point conversion run to make the score 15-8 with 10 minutes, 15 seconds to play at Waverider Stadium.

Spencer, who missed last week’s game, ran for 157 yards, according to Na Alii coach J.W. Kenton.

Andrew Conti’s 25-yard field goal with 2:37 left sealed the win for King Kekaulike, which relied on its defense all night. Elvis Matagi sacked Dominick Trevino on fourth down to give Na Alii the ball on their own 44-yard line with 8:59 to play, setting up the drive that ended with Conti’s clincher.

”We played pretty good defense tonight, I was real pleased,” Kenton said. ”They came together like a family like I have been asking them to do for a couple of weeks.”

Kahuku sacks Punahou
Honolulu Star Bulletin
By Paul Honda

Second-ranked Kahuku registered seven sacks against a rebuilding Punahou squad in a 24-14 win last night at Aloha Stadium.

T.J. Tito, a junior linebacker, recorded three of those sacks on first-year starter Kaiana Eldredge, a transfer from Utah. Kahuku improved to 2-0 in nonconference play, while defending state champion Punahou lost its season opener.

“The D-line opened up holes for me,” said Tito, sounding more line a running back. “They took out all the (offensive) tackles.”

Interior defensive linemen Veteson Sauni, Kona Schwenke and Hauoli Jamora drew their share of attention from Punahou’s experienced O-line.

“The defense played well,” coach Reggie Torres said. “Our three front guys are studs.”

Though the Red Raiders continue to unveil new looks — pistol and spread formations with four receivers — the philosophy hasn’t strayed far from its roots. Kahuku ran the ball on 39 of 52 plays from scrimmage.

Punahou’s defense was stingy on the ground, but Kahuku quarterback Evan Moe found the passing lanes to his liking. He completed only four passes, but didn’t force many others and hit two receivers for touchdowns.

Kahuku topples Punahou, 24-14

Honolulu Advertiser
By Stacy Kaneshiro

Playing like a team with more experience, Kahuku came out firing on all cylinders to beat defending Division I state champion Punahou, 24-14, last night at Aloha Stadium.

The nonleague game was the season opener for the Buffanblu (0-1), who are looking for a successor to all-state quarterback Cayman Shutter.

Meanwhile, the Red Raiders (2-0) looked like a team ready for its O’ahu Interscholastic Association Red East opener Saturday at Kailua.

Kahuku’s defense set the tone, limiting the Buffanblu to just 91 yards in offense. Punahou’s only TD by the offense came on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Dean Matsuo with 53 seconds left in the game. Their other score was an 81-yard interception return by Jeremy Ioane.

Outside linebacker T.J. Tito was in on five of Kahuku’s seven sacks on Punahou QBs Kaiana Eldredge and Liloa Travis, who is in his first season. Eldredge is a transfer from a Utah program that primarily ran the ball.

KHON2 Athlete of the Week: PJ Minaya

KHON2 Sports Athlete of the Week: PJ Minaya

At 5-10, 150-pounds, Pac-Five quarterback PJ Minaya might not
immediately catch your eye. But as his coach says, the guy can fling
the football. He proved that again this past weekend, throwing 7
touchdowns in a 48-19 win over Kaimuki.

We’ve seen this before.

Last year, Minaya set Oahu records with 513 yards through the air on 36 for 50 passing in a 7 touchdown effort against Word of Life.

This past Saturday, the numbers read :370-yards, 25 of 41, and 7 scores.

Minaya, now a senior at Hanalani, says it’s a sign of self-improvement.

One of those receivers is Darin Kamealoha who caught 4 of the 7 touchdown tosses Saturday.

With such weapons at his command, Minaya’s abilities have prompted change in the Wolfpack’s offensive philosophy.

Minaya may not be a prototypical college prospect at the quarterback spot, his desire is to be in the field – at the next level.

Well he’s got some interest from the rest of the local prep football scene, that’s for sure.

The 1 and 0 Wolfpack take on McKinley this Saturday.

Foodland and Sack N Save Stores Accept
Donations at Checkout to Help Save
Hawaii’s High School Sports and Match
Customer Donations Dollar for Dollar up To $50,000.
Donations accepted through Aug. 31

HONOLULU – Foodland Super Market, Hawaii’s largest and locally-owned and operated grocery retailer, announced that it will partner with its customers to support the Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) to help save athletic programs in our public schools. Beginning Monday, Aug. 17 and running through Aug. 31, customers are encouraged to make a donation of any amount up to $249 at checkout at any Foodland and Sack N Save store statewide.  Foodland will match all customer donations dollar for dollar up to a total of $50,000 for all donations combined.

“We were saddened to hear about the recent budget cuts to Hawaii’s public school athletic programs, and we want to do what we can to support our schools and community,” said Jenai S. Wall, Foodland Chairman and CEO.  “We know our customers also recognize the importance of high school athletics and we’re pleased to provide them with an easy way to help, along with an incentive to do so,” continued Wall.  “Together with our customers, through donations made at checkout in the next 2 weeks and Foodland’s $50,000 matching gift, we hope to give $100,000 to the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.”

“We are overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness and generosity of Foodland to join together with its customers to help us during this challenging time, ” said Keith Amemiya, HHSAA Executive Director.  “With 30 Foodland and Sack N Save stores statewide, it really does make it easy for everyone to help in whatever way they can.”

Making a donation at checkout is easy:

    * Customers may take a $5, $10, or $20 donation slip at checkout and present it to the cashier. The donation amount will be added to the customer’s grocery purchase.
    * Customers may also choose to donate any other amount from a penny to $249. Again, the donation amount will be added to the customer’s grocery purchase.
    * Customers may make a donation with cash, check, debit card or credit card.
    * The amount donated will appear on the customer’s receipt.
    * Donations will be tracked through Foodland’s register system.
    * At the end of the program, all donations will be matched dollar for dollar up to $50,000 for all donations combined.

Donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law and customers may wish to save their receipt for tax purposes.  All donations are anonymous, so if customers would like the HHSAA to know of their donation, it is advised that they make a copy of their receipt and send it to them.

It was announced last month that approximately $1.2 million will be cut from Hawaii’s public high school athletic programs for the 2009-10 school year.  HHSAA said that the budget cut amounts to approximately 50% of the funding needed for supplies, equipment, and ground transportation for 45 public high schools statewide, and that the budget cut would require drastic mesasures to be undertaken, including the possible cutting of all public high school junior varsity sports.
The Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA), founded in 1956, is exclusively dedicated to serve 95 member public and private high schools as they work cooperatively to support and promote athletics as part of the high school education program.

Foodland Super Market, Ltd  was founded in 1948 by Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan. The kama`aina company has 30 stores spanning four islands with approximately 2,500 employees.

For more information visit www.hhsaa.org or call Foodland at (808… or HHSAA at (808) 687-4495.
