SAC: Archers on the mark as free throw shooting, forced turnovers key to FW South’s title game victory over defending champion FW Luers

By Colin Altevogt

Girls Basketball Coordinator

FORT WAYNE â??? Fort Wayne South employed quick defensive pressure and made the most of unmatchable early energy in beating Fort Wayne Luers for the Summit Athletic Conference tournament championship, 77-61.

â??The first time we played them, they handled (the press) well,â? South assistant coach David Goodwell said. â??We made little adjustments and rushed the ball once they got it in. We pressured the ball and I think that shook them up a little bit.â?

South got a lot of help from guard Shaâ??la Jackson. The Southern Illinois-bound senior scored 33 points, the most ever in a championship game and fourth-highest single-game total in tournament history.

â??Shaâ??la creates mismatches,â? Goodwell said. â??She shoots a true jump shot, which is very difficult to defend.â?

Luers certainly found Jackson difficult to contain all night. Every time the Knights pulled within striking distance, Jackson seemed to respond with points on the other end either from the free throw line, where she shot 10-of-11, or from the floor.

Between the full-court press and the offensive dominance of Jackson, Luers found itself in a hole early. The Archers benefited from seven early Luersâ?? turnovers and shot to a 13-4 advantage with 3:37 left in the first quarter. By the end of the period, the Knights were facing a 19-6 deficit.

â??I told them that the shots werenâ??t falling early on, but they will,â? Luers coach Teri Rosinski said. â??We have to be able to play defense and make some stops.â?

â??To South Sideâ??s credit, they took it right at us and we had a difficult time slowing them down.â?

South stretched the lead to as many as 16 in the second period. Luersâ?? MarKee Martin scored on a lay-in and three-pointer to cut the lead to 11 with a minute left in the half. The Knights looked poised to slice the deficit to single digits before intermission, but Jackson knocked down a pair from the line and South led 33-20 after two.

â??Every time we tried to make a little dent in that deficit, they hit their free throws,â? Rosinski said.

They did indeed. The Archers connected on 26-of-30 from the line, including a 12-of-12 performance from senior Marceya Mingo.

With 30 seconds to go in the quarter, Martin missed a three that would have cut the gap to eight. Jackson nailed another pair from the stripe, however, and South led 51-38 heading into the final quarter.

The Archers were never able to pull away until the final minute, however. Down 13 with two minutes to go, Martin hit back-to-back shots behind the arc-two of the Knights 10 three-pointers in the contest-in a span of 15 seconds. The seven point deficit was the closest the Knights had been since the 5:20 mark of the first quarter.

On the other end, however, Southâ??s Jarvisha Jackson scored on the and-one play. Luers would not score the rest of the game.

Southâ??s victory revenged a 41-39 loss to Luers in an SAC regular season match-up Dec. 8. South wins its first conference tournament title, ending the Knights three-year reign as champions.

Hall of Fame Classic Video: Diggins sends message with big fourth quarter as SB Washington wins championship over New Castle, 65-51

By Colin Altevogt

Girls Basketball Coordinator

NEW CASTLE â??? At night, the stars shone the brightest.

One game after Heritage Christian standout Kelly Faris scored on a last-second put back to save her team from defeat, South Bend Washingtonâ??s Skylar Diggins led a big fourth quarter surge as the Panthers downed host New Castle, 65-51, in the championship game at the Hall of Fame Classic.

Click here to watch a video montage of the championship game edited by Video Coordinator Eric Eaton!

(NOTE:
To watch the video, you may need QuickTime 7.1. For a free download, click here.)

â??They are very athletic and a good group of ladies,â? Washington coach Marilyn Coddens said of her team. â??They really showed it tonight.â?

New Castle hung tough in the opening quarter but trailed by five, 14-9, after eight minutes of play. Both team combined for only three turnovers in the first.

The Panthers had trouble getting their offense going in the second quarter. Washington was held scoreless for 4:04 until Lauren Archie converted on the Panthersâ?? third attempt of the possession.

New Castle was unable to capitalize on Washingtonâ??s scoring woes, however. After a slow, drought-filled first half that included three turnovers in five seconds in the last minute of the second quarter, the Panthers led the Trojans 24-17 at intermission.

Following the break in action, New Castle emerged from the locker room with a greater sense of urgency. The Trojans went on a quick 10-2 run and with two minutes gone in the third quarter, led for the first time all night, 27-26.

With less than a minute remaining in the third quarter and the Trojans tied at 38 all, the New Castle faithful could sense an upset. Washington got a three from Cheneka Anderson on her only shot of the night and a lay-up following a steal by Archie, but the Trojans were still very much in the game heading into the final period down just five.

Into the fourth quarter, the enthusiasm of the home crowd had yet to waver. The
New Castle student section grew more vocal as some fans even began to heckle the sharpshooting Diggins. The sophomore guard responded in Reggie-esque form.

â??Fans will be fans,â? Diggins said of the late-game jeering. â??You just got to play through that. Thatâ??s part of the game.â?

Diggins scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the quarter. Five minutes after the game had been tied at 38, Washington led 57-40 thanks to a 19-2 in which the Panthers connected on 7 of their 8 shots from the field.

â??I knew my teammates would pick up the slack for me,â? Diggins said, â??but at the end, I just felt like I had to take over. I think we executed the plan really well.â?

The Trojans never made a serious run for the remainder of the contest.

New Castleâ??s Corie West led all scorers with 23 points, 14 of which came in the third quarter.

Diggins wins Classic MVP

South Bend Washington guard Skylar Diggins was named Hall of Fame Classic MVP. Diggins had 24 points in the Panthersâ?? overtime victory over Heritage Christian and 22 in the championship on 9-of-18 shooting. Just a sophomore, Diggins helped lead Washington to its first ever regional and semi-state titles. The Panthers finished runner-up, losing to Castle in last yearâ??s 4A state championship.

Other members of the All-Classic team (MVP excluded):

Katie Hacker, Franklin Central

Kelly Faris, Heritage Christian

Macey Elyea, New Castle

Corie West, New Castle

Ashley Varner, South Bend Washington

Hall of Fame Classic Video: Second-chance buckets help 4A No. 3 SB Washington thwart 2A No. 1 Heritage Christian, 71-69, in OT thriller

By Colin Altevogt

Girls Basketball Coordinator

NEW CASTLE â??? Two of the stateâ??s favorites to win the state championship in their respective classes met Dec. 28 at New Castle and the result was an all-time classic.

With the clock rushing toward zeros and the game tied at 69, South Bend Washington sophomore Skylar Diggins drove in the lane but her left-handed shot fell off the mark. Washington grabbed the rebound, however, and Shalana Murray hit a short, buzzer-beating jumper from the baseline as the 4A No. 3 Panthers won 71-69 over 2A top-ranked Heritage Christian in overtime.

Click here to watch a video montage of both opening round matchups: Franklin Central vs. New Castle and Heritage Christian vs. South Bend Washington!

(NOTE: To watch the video, you may need QuickTime 7.1. For a free download, click here.)

The play was an almost exact replicate of one just 27 seconds before when Diggins missed a driving shot but Washington regained possession before Diggins dished to an open Murray for a baseline jumper to put Washington up one.

â??I knew we had enough time,â? Washington coach Marilyn Coddens said. â??Our kids have enough experience, and I truly believe in my heart that come crunch time they can handle it.â?

Diggins, one of the premiere scorers in the state, struggled through an off-day shooting. The 5â??9â? guard was 8-of-23 from the floor but knocked down 7-of-8 free throws.

Washington looked to capitalize off Heritage Christianâ??s early nerves by going to the full-court press. The defensive pressure gave Heritage Christian fits for much of the game as the Eagles committed 26 turnovers.

Heritage Christian was able to compensate for its lack of ball handling, though, by shooting 53.5% from the floor including a red-hot 65.2% after halftime.

After Heritage Christian opened up an early 7-4 lead, Washington clamped down on defense, holding the Eagles to a scoreless three minutes that included turnovers on four consecutive possessions. Diggins scored two quick buckets in the final minute of the quarter and the Panthers led 17-12 after one.

Just 12 minutes into the game, Heritage Christian had given the ball away 13 times. Gradually, however, the Eagles began to take care of the rock and by halftime trailed by just three, 29-26.

At the 3:58 mark of the third quarter, Heritage Christian sophomore Kelly Faris knocked down a three with a hand in her face as the Eagles went up 37-36. It was Heritage Christianâ??s first lead since 12-11 in the first quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Heritage Christian went on a 6-0 run, culminating in a nice pass from Faris to freshman Kaycee Jones to tie the contest at 48. Washington answered with a 6-0 burst of its own thanks to four more Eagle turnovers.

As the Panthers seemed to be pulling away, however, Faris brought Heritage Christian back. The Eaglesâ?? leading scorer score twice, the first a floater in traffic and the latter three points the old-fashioned way.

With a minute left, Faris stripped Washington point guard Emily Phillips of the ball and appeared headed for an easy basket that would have given the Eagles the lead. On a controversial call, however, Faris was called for reaching in. Her fourth foul, coupled with Washingtonâ??s retention of the ball, would prove to be a huge turning point.

Heritage Christian did regain the lead on its next possession with a pair of free throws from Jones with 45 seconds remaining. Washington tied the game when Diggins split a pair from the stripe.

After a timeout with 4.3 seconds remaining, Phillips stole a Heritage Christian inbounds pass, taking the game into extra time.

Washington scored the first five points in overtime. With 1:57 left, Faris fouled out after collecting her fifth.

The Eagles took the lead and also tied it in the final minute but could not hang on for the victory.

â??The moral (victory) is kind of nice, but from a coaching standpoint obviously you want to win,â? Heritage Christian coach Rick Risinger said. â??Ultimately we do everything in the season to try to prepare for the state tournament, so games like these obviously help us.â?

Diggins and Faris had 24 and 23 points respectively to lead their teams in scoring.

Hall of Fame Classic VIDEO: West’s late-game heroics lead 3A No. 2 New Castle past Franklin Central, 61-54

By Colin Altevogt

Girls Basketball Coordinator

NEW CASTLE – With standout guard Corie West fatigued and laboring,
New Castle coach Curt Bell called a timeout with 5:50 remaining and the
game between his 3A No. 2 Trojans and Franklin Central tied at 45.

The maneuver paid off. Following the break, West knocked down a
three with a hand in her face, stole the ball on Franklin Centralâ??s
next possession and dished to an open teammate for another triple.

Westâ??s play highlighted a quick 9-0 New Castle run that enabled
the host Trojans to advance to the championship game of the Hall of
Fame Classic, 61-54.

Click here to watch a video montage from
both of the first-round matchups: Franklin Central vs. New
Castle
and Heritage Christian vs. South Bend Washington!

(NOTE: To watch the video, you may need QuickTime 7.1. For a free
download, click here.)

â??Sheâ??s asked
to do an awful lot,â? Bell said of his senior guard. â??Sheâ??s done all the
little things we need from her as a floor general, and she doesnâ??t
get rattled out there.

New Castle stormed out to an early first quarter lead off the
strength of seven first quarter points by sophomore forward Macey
Elyea. Using an old-fashioned set shot, Elyea was 4-of-6 from beyond
the arc in the first half.

After one, the Trojans led 16-7 and appeared headed for a runaway victory.

Franklin Central, however, had other ideas. Boosted by the
entrance of defensive ace Chanel Simmons, the Flashes forced nine
second quarter turnovers. Down by nine, Franklin Central went on an 8-0
run in the last minute to take some momentum to the locker room.

â??She is very athletic,â? Bell said of Simmons. â??We had to gather
ourselves at halftime and talk about (Franklin Centralâ??s late burst.)â?

At the half, New Castle had already committed 12 turnovers but had
shot 5-of-9 from three-point range. The Trojans led 27-26 after two
quarters.

With New Castle up one, West hit a long three from nearly NBA
range. Franklin Central scored four straight to tie the contest before
Trojan center Allison Reese put back her own miss before the end of the
third quarter. Heading into the final quarter, New Castle was up just
two, 43-41.

Two minutes into the fourth, Franklin Centralâ??s Katie Hacker put
back a miss to tie the game. Then West went to work and it was lights
out for the Flashes.

Hacker led all scorers with 21 points. Elyea scored 19 for New
Castle. West added 17 points and six assists while Reese had 17 points
and seven boards.

Hall of Fame Classic VIDEO: 2A No. 1 Heritage Christian downs Franklin Central on buzzer-beating putback, 49-48

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

NEW CASTLE â??? Sophomore center Kelly Faris put back a
miss of her own driving layup with one second remaining Dec. 28, lifting Class
2A top-ranked Heritage Christian to a thrilling 49-48 victory over Franklin Central
in the consolation game of the 23rd Annual Hall of Fame Classic at
New Castle Fieldhouse.

Farisâ?? heroics trumped the seeming game-winning
layin just 9.6 seconds before by FC senior center Katie Hacker, whose game-high
21 points were not enough to keep the 4A Flashes from falling to 6-6 on the
season. Heritage Christian, the defending 2A state champion that lost on a
similar last-second play earlier in the day to 4A No. 3 South Bend Washington,
improves to 12-2.

Click here to watch the final 24.7 seconds,
which includes the late-game heroics of both Hacker and Faris!

(NOTE:
To watch the video, you may need QuickTime 7.1. For a free download, click here.)

Both Faris and Hacker were named to the All-Classic
team.

â??Kelly is
a very good player, and we didnâ??t want to take the outside shot,â? said HC
second-year coach Rick Risinger. â??We definitely wanted to take it to the hole
and take our chances for a free throw, which we were in the bonus, or a layup.

â??Fortunately,
we knocked down the layup.

Good
fortune, indeed â??? and a fitting conclusion to a game that was nip-tuck from the
start of the second quarter on. The final three minutes, for example, saw two
ties and two lead changes alone.

But it was
the 5â??11â? Farisâ?? full-court drive and follow that finally put this game to bed,
that effort on the heels of a leaning bank shot from the right side at :29.6
that had put the Eagles back on top at 47-46. After Hacker powered in her
bucket from the right baseline, Faris took that ball the length of the floor
and went up from the left side for a short bank shot.

The ball
caromed off the rim, but Faris was there to make sure the putback was clean
from the right.

â??A play
like that at the end, you just absolutely gotta drive it to the hole, Risinger
said.

Ironically,
a putback with one second on the third-quarter clock by senior forward Courtney
Turner had allowed the Eagles to turn a 24-23 halftime deficit into a 36-31
lead heading into the fourth. Eerily, the follow-up bucket was also off a miss
by â?¦ Turner, who led Heritage Christian with 17 points.

â??Turner
played real strong inside,â? Risinger said. â??They did a little junk defense that
left her down there by herself on the baseline, which made it kind of tough on
her.

â??The girls
stepped up, and we were very fortunate to win that.

Heritage Christian appeared poised to roll after the
opening period, when seven Franklin Central turnovers resulted in a 17-10 lead
for the Eagles. But the Flashes did a 180 in the second stanza, committing nary
a turnover while holding HC to 2-of-8 shooting en route to a 24-23 halftime
advantage.

The Eagles suffered from bucketless droughts of 3:43
and 3:49 in the period sandwiched around a pair of high-percentage baskets from
sophomore guard Claire Freeman and Turner. Franklin Central, meanwhile,
synergized its flawless ball-handling effort with 5-of-10 shooting to take its
first lead on a Freeman laying 37 seconds ahead of intermission.

â??Theyâ??re a very good team, well coached â??? I knew they would kind of come back,â?
Risinger said. â??The second quarter, we did some things to try to conserve a
little bit of energy with the idea weâ??d come out in the third quarter.

â??It didnâ??t
quite work out that way,â? he added with a chuckle. â??They did a very good job of
controlling the turnovers, which is what they needed.

After a
bank shot by sophomore defensive specialist Chanel Simmons gave FC a 31-30 lead
with 2:19 left in the third, however, a 6-0 run by Heritage Christian put the
Eagles back on top by five, setting the stage for a ferocious fourth quarter.

Colin's column: Dissecting "December Madness' and the Game of the Year II

By Colin Altevogt
Girls Basketball Coordinator

For
high school basketball fans, it still
is the most wonderful time of the year. The days between Christmas and New
Yearâ??s Eve provide a plethora of tournaments around the state. No delaying
intro this week. Below is everything you need to know about â??December Madness.â?

This
weekâ??s top non-tournament games:

Wednesday:
Evansville
Memorial @ Lawrence North: Last yearâ??s 3A runner-up travels to Indy to face a
Wildcat team that has rattled off seven straight since losing back-to-back
games in November.

Heritage
Christian vs. Perry Meridian: A day before its date with South Bend Washington,
Heritage Christian faces a deceivingly good Perry Meridian team. Donâ??t be
fooled by the 4-6 record.

Big
tournaments:

Decatur Central (Wednesday):
First
round: Warren Central vs. Decatur Central, Indianapolis Tech vs. Avon

Outlook:
A likely championship match between Warren and Avon could provide the Oriolesâ?? first defeat of the
season. Warren
was held to 21 points in a loss to top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern.

Hamilton County (Wednesday through
Friday):
First
round: Fishers vs. Noblesville, Carmel vs.
Hamilton Southeastern, Westfield vs. Hamilton Heights; bye: Guerin Catholic

Outlook:
4A No. 1 Southeastern should have a relatively smooth path to the title if the
Royals can defeat Carmel.
HSE downed the â??Hounds Nov. 25, giving Carmel
its only loss this season.

Summit Conference (Wednesday through Friday):
First
round: We have no freakinâ?? clue â??? seriously. After scouring the Internet for
any semblance of a schedule, we got nada
â?¦

Outlook:
Three-time defending champion Fort Wayne Luers is once again the heavy
favorite. A likely title bout with Fort Wayne South would be interesting,
especially after Luersâ?? earlier victory that should determine the regular-season
conference crown.

Hall of Fame (Thursday):
First
round: Franklin Central vs. New Castle, South Bend Washington
vs. Heritage Christian

Outlook:
The second game of the day is perhaps a battle of the stateâ??s top two teams. A
victory by Heritage Christian, a 2A school, would surely send a message to the
IHSAA about the class system. The winner doesnâ??t exactly get a clear path to
the trophy, either. An evening game against New Castle â??? the more likely scenario â??? would
be tough in the Trojansâ?? monstrous gym.

Rumble on the River (Thursday through Friday):
First
round: North Harrison vs. Indianapolis Chatard, Franklin
County vs. Cambridge City Lincoln, Connersville vs. McCutcheon, Jasper vs. Southwestern (Hanover)

Outlook:
The most realistic championship game (Chatard & Southwestern) could help
Southwestern gain some respect down by the Ohio. There are a lot of things that could
go wrong before that, though.

Twin Lakes (Thursday through
Friday):
First
round: Rochester vs. Lebanon,
Logansport vs. Indianapolis Cathedral, Taylor
vs. Evansville Memorial, Western vs. Twin
Lakes

Outlook:
Any of the eight teams could win in this three-round battle of
middle-of-the-road-teams.

Ben Davis (Friday):
First
round: Anderson vs. Ben Davis, Plainfield vs. Bloomington South

Outlook:
Early game is huge as the Giants hope to capitalize off home cooking to ruin Andersonâ??s undefeated
season.

Random game of last week:
Lawrence Central 58, Indianapolis Broad Ripple 54 (OT)

In
a tough transition year, Bears get their first win of the season and snap a
39-game losing streak. From the looks of their schedule, it may be their last
win.

Last weekâ??s upsets:
Anderson
Highland 71, New Castle
68
Forest Park 52, Crawford County
42

Unbeaten watch:
Twelve
teams remain perfect, with half of those assured of carrying that into 2007. Class
A teams Bloomfield and Argos still appear the most likely to cap off
a perfect season.

Girls basketball reclassifications for four-year stint starting in 2007 announced

From
ihsaa.org

IHSAA Commissioner Blake Ress announced Dec. 21 the enrollment figures
and classifications for each IHSAA member school in several sports for coming
school years.

The enrollment figures were submitted by the IHSAA member schools to the
Indiana Department of Education this fall. Those numbers
â??? the total of boys and
girls in grades 9-12
â???
are used to determine the classifications in the sports of football, baseball,
boys and girls basketball, softball, and volleyball.

All those sports, with the exception of football, are on a four-year
classification cycle with these figures taking effect in 2007-08 and running
through 2010-11.
(Football,
which is divided into five classes, is now reclassified every two years with
the new figures affecting the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years.)

Sectional assignments in each sport will be announced this spring.
Schools will be placed in the same sectional groupings in baseball, boys and girls basketball, softball, and volleyball.

Four schools that joined the IHSAA in 2006 are included in the
compilation but will not be eligible to compete in IHSAA tournaments until
2008-09. Those schools are: 21st Century at Fall Creek, Bowman Academy,
Herron, and Indianapolis Metropolitan.

Also, per IHSAA By-Law, C-2-3c, a school may opt to play up one or more
classes in a specific sport for that classification period by notifying the
Association Office.

The list

boys basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball):
