He drives by the Kalani High School football practice field every day, on his way to visit his parents in Aina Haina. He knows the coach, and that the team uses the offensive scheme with which he is intimately familiar and forever linked.
So one day he pulls into the parking lot and watches. The next day he does the same thing. “But it’s kind of hard to see it from the car,” he says.
Within a few days, Ron Lee—a year ago the coordinator for the yard-chomping University of Hawaii football team’s run-and-shoot offense—has joined the Kalani staff as a full-time volunteer coach.
The Falcons haven’t won a varsity game since 2004.
“This goes beyond X’s and O’s because of what an outstanding person and teacher Ron is,” says Greg Taguchi, a former Kalani running back on his third tour of duty as Falcons head coach. “The players know who he is. Our kids are stable and don’t show much emotion. But I sure hope they know they have an opportunity.”
Lee downplays it, but plenty of local high school coaches would have been elated to bring him on as an adviser or onto their staff. Teams that are contenders for the state championship. Teams with numbers and size. Teams that haven’t lost nearly 50 games in a row.
SO WHY KALANI? And why, at 66, continue to coach at all after the way he was marginalized at UH?

Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii hired former Kahuku High School
Coach Hiram Akina to lead the Seasiders’ women’s basketball team today.
Akina replaces Wendy Anae, who coached the team for the first four years of its
existence and is leaving to further her education.
Akina, who graduated from BYU–Hawaii in 1983 and obtained his masters from
BYU in 1986, inherits a squad that went 9-17 overall last season and was 5-11
in the Pacific West Conference. He brings a wealth of experience to the
job, having coached the Kahuku boy’s team to a 46-13 mark over the last two
seasons after head coaching jobs at Mililani High School (boys),
Chandler-Gilbert Community College (women), Arizona Boys Ranch, Hopi High
School (girls), Las Vegas High School (boys), and Brinley Middle School (boys)
along with stints as an assistant coach at Valley High School (boys),
BYU–Hawaii (men), and BYU (women) in a career that spans 26 years.
BYU–Hawaii Athletic Director Ken Wagner says he is “excited to have someone
of Coach Akina’s experience and local knowledge take over our program. We
expect him to run a great program here.”
Coach Akina shares Wagner’s excitement. “I have a vision of what this program
can become,” he says. “I can’t wait to get started and I expect to win a
lot of games here.”
BYU–Hawaii added women’s basketball as a varsity sport to
start the 2006-07 season and owns a record of 43-62 in the four years of the
program, all under Coach Anae.
