ONE MORE TIME!

Sometimes, there are omens.

In the 7th inning of the ILH
tournament game between Iolani and Punahou Monday, a passing shower rained
on the first base dugout occupied by the Raiders.  Ironically, at the same
time in the third base dugout where defending state champion Punahou hung
out, it wasn’t raining at all.  Such is Hawaii.  And such were the fortunes
of this game.

The Buffanblue, fighting back in the
loser’s bracket in the double-elimination tourney, whipped the Raiders, 9-1
at Ala Wai Field.  It was the first loss for Iolani.  The Punahou victory
sets up a winner-take-all tournament championship game on Wednesday, also at
the Ala Wai.

Punahou struck first in this one,
with Matt Suiter belting just the third pitch in the bottom of the first
inning, all the way to the fence in left-centerfield.  Suiter ended up with
a triple and scored moments later on a single by Josh Bninski.

Iolani tied it at 1-1 in the top of
the third with singles by Daniel Takami and Case Miyahira.  But the tie
didn’t last long.

In the bottom of the third, the
Buffanblue broke the game wide open.  Bninski followed back-to-back walks
with a two-run double and then scored later on a ground out to give Punahou
a 4-1 lead.

The Buffanblue scored a run on a Paul
Snieder single and a sacrifice fly in the fourth, another run on two Iolani
errors in the fifth, and three runs in the sixth on a Matt Suiter double
followed by four walks and a hit batsman to run their lead to 9-1.

     Punahou reliever Reese Kiriu then
finished up the game with a double play ball.  Kiriu and starting pitcher
Jeeter Ishida combined on an impressive 4-hitter for the victory.

Punahou won one and Iolani won one on Thursday, but it was
the Raiders who won the most important one.

In the intense ILH baseball tournament, Iolani beat its
crosstown rival 3-1, only a few hours after Punahou edged Kamehameha 8-7 in
the completion of Wednesday night’s suspended game.  The Buffanblue took nine
total innings to win the first game and then had to get on a bus to travel
from the Ala Wai Field to Mid-Pacific.  Their bats seemed to have cooled off
on the bus for game number two.

Iolani pitchers Jon Okada and reliever Jarrett Arakawa
were masterful in holding Punahou to just one run.  That run was provided on
a homer to centerfield by Jeeter Ishida in the bottom of the 2nd inning.

Meanwhile, Punahou starter Reese Kiriu fashioned a
no-hitter until the 5th, but he was touched for two unearned runs in the 4th
when two walks and an error gave Iolani a 2-1 lead.

The Buffanblue threatened in the bottom of the 6th
when they loaded the bases on singles by Jeeter, Paul Snieder and a walk.
But Arakawa, the freshman left-hander who missed most of the season with a
shoulder injury, pitched out of a jam by inducing a double play groundball
to end the inning.

Then, in the 7th, the Raiders added insurance when a
single by Grant Liu, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI single by Case Miyahira
made the score 3-1.  Arakawa pitched a 1-2-3 final inning and when Reyn
Nagamine squeezed a foul pop fly for the final out, Iolani fans erupted in
celebration.

Iolani moves on to the title game Monday night while
Punahou goes to the losers bracket on Saturday.  Monday’s potential
championship game is scheduled for Central Oahu Regional Park at 6:30pm.  An
Iolani win will set up a winner-take-all meeting with regular season champ
Punahou in a one-game playoff.  Iolani will get two chances to win the
tournament because they are the only undefeated team remaining in the
double-elimination format.

     And the drama continues…..

ILH BASEBALL TOURNAMENT BEGINS!

ILH
BASEBALL TOURNAMENT BEGINS!

By: Bob
Hogue- Digital Sports Hawaii Senior Sports Correspondent
April 22,2007

The ILH baseball tournament isn’t a sprint, it’s
a marathon.

That’s why it was so important to second-seeded
Iolani to jump out in front today in their game
against winless and 7th-seeded Pac-Five.  The
Raiders jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and then
after a mild scare, they went on to record a 15-5
victory in a game shortened to six innings.

Iolani, which improved to 10-3 on the season,
will now play powerful Mid-Pacific on Wednesday
afternoon at the Ala Wai Field.  Mid-Pac defeated
St. Louis 3-1.  Pac-Five, meanwhile, falls into
losers bracket play in the double elimination
tournament that runs through next week.  Top-seeded
and undefeated Punahou had a bye Monday and will
play its first tournament game on Wednesday.

In Monday’s game at the Ala Wai, Iolani
exploded for four runs in the second inning against
the Wolfpack.  Brennan Nacario, Reyn Nagamine, and
Grant Iwamoto spaced three singles around three
Pac-Five errors to help the Raiders to a 4-0 lead.

In the Raider third, a double by Daniel Takami
and a single by Case Miyahara, plus three hit
batsman allowed Iolani to up its lead to 6-0.
Pac-Five pitchers combined to hit five Raider
batters.

In the fourth, Iolani upped its lead to 8-0.
David Takami’s single, sandwiched between two
errors, allowed the Raiders to score twice more.

But then, Pac-Five exploded against Iolani
winning pitcher Kelsey Outram.  Four singles, by
Zack Fujimoto, John Ray Rodrigues, Travis Ogimi, and
Kam Moises, plus a walk allowed the Wolfpack to
score five times.  The score going into the bottom
of the fifth inning had closed to 8-5 Raiders.

In the bottom of the fifth, Grant Iwamoto
scored on a Kela Marciel sacrifice fly to up
Iolani’s lead to 9-5.  In the top of the sixth, Jon
Okada relieved Outram and pitched out of two-on, no
out jam.  Okada recorded the save for Iolani.

Then, in the bottom of the sixth, the Raiders
exploded again to put the game away.  Singles by
Rylen Morihara, Nagamine, and Breland Almadova
helped push the lead to 12-5.  Marciel followed with
a bases-clearing double to plate three more runs and
Iolani had a 10-run victory.

The game was called at that time due to the
10-run rule.

Punahou clinched the ILH regular season title
last week.  If the Buffanblue don’t win the ILH
tournament, then a one game playoff between the
tourney champion and Punahou will decide the ILH’s
lone berth in the state championship tournament.
Punahou is the three-time defending state champion.

No matter the records and the seedings, all ILH
teams have learned not to count on anything.  After
all, this is a marathon and anything can happen.

OIA Girls Water Polo PLAYOFF PICTURE!

OIA Girls Water Polo PLAYOFF PICTURE!

By: DEXTER LEE- Kapolei Water

Top seed will be determined by the Kapolei vs Kahuku game this Saturday.
If Kahuku wins; Kahuku will be #1, Roosevelt #2 and Kapolei #3.  If Kapolei
wins, the three teams will coin flip.

Mid seeds:
Kalani plays Mililani for most of the marbles.  Seeding from 4 to 7 are yet
to be determined.  If Kalani can beat either Kahuku or Mililani, they will be
fourth.  If Kalani drops both, Kaimuki can be fourth with a win over Roosevelt,
Mililani will be fourth with a win over Kalani.  If Mililani wins, Kaimuki
loses, then Mililani 4th, Kalani 5th, Kaimuki 6th, and Leilehua 7th.  If Kalani
loses to Kahuku and beats Mililani, Kalani will be fourth and coin flip for
5th-7th.
*Leilehua has completed regular season play.

The 8 seed:
Kaiser, McKinley, and Castle are in a tight race.  Any team wins out will
get the seed.  McKinley plays Aiea and Castle.  Kaiser plays Aiea and
Roosevelt.  Castle plays McKinley and Pearl City. Too many scenarios to review.
*Aiea still has a shot.  The game to watch will be the Castle vs
McKinley.
