Crusaders win Big
HawaiiDigitalSports.com Staff

The Crusaders raced to a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter and finished with a 55-28 ILH varsity football victory over Kamehameha at Aloha Stadium.

Kamehameha scored just before halftime to cut into the Crusader lead at 28-7.

The second half was filled with a lot of scoring by both teams – Saint Louis 27, Kamehameha 21 – and penalties.

Saint Louis will have a bye next week while Kamehameha will play Punahou at Aloha Stadium.

Crusaders cruise
By Billy Hull
Honolulu Star-Bulletin

Saint Louis quarterback Jeremy Higgins ended No. 6 Kamehameha’s playoff hopes with a career evening, throwing for 484 yards and six touchdowns in a 55-28 victory over the Warriors last night at Aloha Stadium.

The second-ranked Crusaders control their own destiny in the race for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I title. All that’s left between Saint Louis (9-1, 6-1) and the league’s only berth in the state tournament is a showdown in 12 days against No. 1 Punahou.

“We control our own destiny, which is what we want,” Higgins said. “We just caught (Kamehameha) off-guard tonight.”

The Crusaders showed the form that earned them the Star-Bulletin’s No. 1 ranking for a good portion of the season. Saint Louis racked up 592 yards of total offense.

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Honolulu Advertiser

Jeremy Higgins passed for six touchdowns and 485 yards and rushed for another and No. 2 Saint Louis blew past No. 6 Kamehameha, 55-28, last night to keep its Interscholastic League of Honolulu title hopes alive at Aloha Stadium.

The Warriors (7-4 overall, 4-3) are mathematically eliminated, leaving the Crusaders (8-1, 6-1) and top-ranked Punahou (8-1, 5-1) to battle it out the final two weeks for the ILH Division I crown.

Saint Louis has a bye next week before playing Punahou Nov. 12. The Warriors will play the Buffanblu Thursday.

It was the highest-scoring game between the two since the Crusaders won in 1992, 55-12.

Winning right up Ajimine’s alley

by Stanley Lee
Honolulu Advertiser

While strikes count the most in bowling, picking up spares pays off in the end.

Two-time defending state girls champion Dara Ajimine can attest to that. The Kalani High School senior won last year’s state championship by one pin.

“Not all the time you’ll strike, so spares are really important,” Ajimine said. “Someone can be striking, but at least you can be sparing. You’re still up there with them and have a chance.”

When the state championships begin this morning at Lihu’e Bowling Center on Kaua’i, Ajimine will return to where she won her first state title. She won that year with a pinfall total of 1,686, 21 better than Pearl City’s Seiko Santos.

“I was really surprised,” Ajimine said. “I was going up against a lot of good bowlers. I’m friends with them, I know what they’re capable of doing. I was surprised with the outcome.”

Aranaydos hit the mark
By Brendan Sagara
Honolulu Star Bulletin

It was a family affair at the Civilian Marksmanship Program Air Riflery State Championships yesterday as Pearl City’s LeLan Aranaydo captured the boys title at the Neal Blasidell Exhibition Hall.

Aranaydo claimed his first state championship in style, dominating in all three phases of the contest to out-point St. Anthony’s Paul Berce, 546 to 535. Aranaydo led all shooters in the prone (191 points) and kneeling (186) positions, and shared the event’s top score in the standing position (169) with Berce.

“It feels so unreal, this is a great way to end my last year,” Aranaydo said. “I just felt it today. Everything just seemed to fall into the right places today.”

The senior shared his big victory with his parents, longtime Pearl City head coach Lester Aranaydo and Chargers girls head coach Shareen.

“This is a result of all the hard work and extra time he put in this year, I’m really proud of him,” Lester said. “It wasn’t always easy. It’s hard to coach your own child. Once we drew the line — that I am coach at practice and Dad at home — he really took off.”

Punahou’s sharpshooters sweep state championships
By Leila Wai
Honolulu Advertiser

The past was a constant presence for the Punahou boys and girls air riflery teams, which swept the 10th Civilian Marksmanship Program Air Riflery State Championships yesterday at the Neal Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall.

The boys won their fourth straight state title and the girls captured their first since 2005, and fourth overall, with a state record score.

“I just wanted to live up to what (former Buffanblu shooters) had done,” Punahou senior Bert Weeks said.

Individually, Pearl City’s LeLan Aranaydo won the boys title with a grand aggregate score of 546, and Sacred Hearts junior Haunani Akana won the girls title with 556.

The Buffanblu boys scored 2038 points, followed by Pearl City (2032) and Waiakea (2031). Four Buffanblu shooters — Chris Han (fifth place, 520), Weeks (11th, 507), Jon Chen (12th, 507) and Alex Char (14th, 504) — finished in the top 14.

Kamehameha sweeps past Punahou to force rematch
By Wes Nakama
Honolulu Advertiser

The ultra-close Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls volleyball race has fittingly been extended by another few days.

Kamehameha swept past visiting Punahou, 25-15, 25-22, 25-23, last night to force a winner-take-all rematch for the ILH title at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Warriors’ Kekuhaupi’o Gym.

Last night’s vocal crowd of about 1,000 at Kekuhaupi’o watched Kamehameha improve to 16-2 in winning the league’s second round. Punahou, the first-round winner, also is 16-2.

The Warriors earned homecourt advantage for Saturday’s overall title match because of a 2-1 record against the Buffanblu in head-to-head meetings.

Last night the Kamehameha band, cheerleaders and partially body-painted crowd were treated to an impressive display of focus and finishing power by the Warriors, who let a 23-18 third-set lead slip away in a home loss to Punahou on Oct. 14.

Civilian Marksmanship Program AIR RIFLERY State Champiohionships

Information Provided by

Check back for Video & Photos by www.HawaiiDigitalSports.com

The top high school marksmen from across the state will converge at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 28, in the Hawaii
High School Athletic Association / Civilian Marksmanship Program 10th Annual Air Riflery State Championships.

History of Air Riflery in Hawaii High Schools:

Air riflery became a statewide high school varsity letter sport in Hawaii in 1999. The 2006-07 school year saw its greatest participation with
972 student-athletes competing for 42 schools statewide.  While there is some variation among the leagues on team size and selection processes to the state championship all utilize the sporter air rifle in 3-position competition as a fall sport. Precision air rifles are not allowed. League competition, with the exception of Maui, is primarily team-based with an individual championship ending the season.  Hawaii’s state championship is one of two in the U.S. that are sanctioned by the high school athletic governing body. Georgia is the other state with a sanctioned championship.  Shooters fire 20 record shots in each of the prone, standing and kneeling positions. A perfect score is 600. Teams are made up of four firing members from the same school.
