It’s tournament time for varsity II boys water polo. On
Monday night, the Raiders took on the Warriors at Iolani pool for the
right to play against the first seed on Wednesday. When you see as many
athletic events as I do, you hope for a close, hard-fought game. Yes,
blowouts are sometimes fun (if your team is on the right side), but
what really excites me is the suspense of a close match.

The Warriors are one of those teams that can be depended
on to put a strong team out on the field (in this case, pool). And,
they didn’t disappoint.

Iolani Raiders Water Polo

The Raiders went out to a quick 3-0 lead, the first goal with 1:40 left in the quarter. Kellen Chong added a goal at :47. 2-0, Raiders. Jeffrey Chau added another goal midway through the second quarter, 3-0, Raiders.

At this point, I started wondering when or if the Warriors would strike back. 21 seconds later I got my answer as the Warriors defense tightened and they scored. 3-1, Raiders.

With 44 seconds left in the half, the Warriors scored again. 3-2, Raiders. As the tension of a close game mounted, Jeffrey Chau struck again with only 5 seconds left in the half, to extend the lead to 4-2. The two goal lead saw the Raider fans relax a bit, but the Warriors fans started to go into overdrive.

The two goal lead didn’t last as the Warriors found the net with 3:30 left in the third. 4-3,  Raiders.

With two minutes to go in the third, the Raiders got that one back, 5-3, Raiders.

Just when the Raider fans were starting to feel comfortable again, the
Warriors hit pay dirt, 5-4, with 4:36 left in the game. Hmmmm….

Tom Hartwell then came up with a really important goal to get the lead back to two with 4:14 to go, 6-4, Raiders.

Defending a shot

With 17 seconds left, the Raiders went into a defensive shell around the goal, but the Warriors found a hole, 6-5, Raiders. The Warriors mounted a furious attack after a timeout but the Raiders wouldn’t break and that’s how it ended.

Great game!

The Raiders now play the number one seed at Punahou, 5pm, on Wednesday. Kamehameha is done for the season. See you at Punahou!

ILH and OIA Cross Country League Championships

ILH and OIA Cross Country League Championships

Alan Linsky usatf-hi.org for Digital Sports Hawaii

October 27th, 2007
>See more photos by Alan Linsky at www.coach-photos.com
>WATCH: Video highlights of the ILH and OIA Cross Country Championships BELOW!

The day was pretty good for running. It wasn’t really hot and occasional
showers graced the CORP course, keeping the temperature somewhat under control.
CORP is a moderately tough course, one really steep hill and quite a bit of side
hill running.

The first race of the day was the boys intermediate. Joshua Freitas has run
well all season, but never won. He was always in the top 10, usually around 3 or
4, but not too far behind the leader. Joshua peaked at the right time, running
an 11:48, winning by 11 seconds over Kelvin Naito and Kasey Chun.

Teamwise, it was Iolani with 33 points, followed by Kamehameha and Punahou
close behind.

Joshua Freitas

Next up was the girls intermediates. Breanne Ball has won every race this
season and only injury or illness would prevent her from taking the
championship. She came through again, running a 12:50 to best second place
Amanda Ishikawa by 22 seconds.

Kamehameha took the team title with 45 points, followed by Punahou, MPI and
Iolani.

Breanne Ball

In the boys JV division, Justin Higa won by 15 seconds over Zachary Sainz.
Justin has been running well and improving all season so this doesn’t come as
much of a surprise.

Kamehameha took the boys JV’s with a strong 29 points. Punahou had 42 while
Iolani had 69.
Justin Higa

In the girls JV race, the Puns show why they have to be considered the
favorite every year. The Puns took the first 6 places plus number 8 for good
measure. They were led by Courtney Choy who ran a 21:58. That time would have
put her in the top 20 of the varsity race and her teammates weren’t that far
behind. Pretty awesome performance.

The Puns perfect score of 15 was followed by Kamehameha at 50 and Iolani at
82.

Courtney Choy

For sheer excitement at the finish and throughout the race, the boys
varsity took the prize as Matthew Nakamoto and Chris Burniske battled throughout
the whole 3 miles. They came around the last tree with Matt having a slight lead
but Chris closing. They both went into an all out sprint with Matt nosing out
Chris at the finish. The times: Matt at 16:50.7 and Chris at 16:50.96 tell the
story. Great race!

Punahou took the boys varsity team title with 42 points. Iolani had 51,
while Kamehameha had 54.
Matthew Nakamoto and
 Chris Burniske

In the girls varsity, Haley Abing was undefeated this season and looking to
win. Maile Scarpino took the lead with about one mile to go but Haley answered
and ended up being the only girl to break 20 minutes in the race at 19:52.
Amanda Tamanaha ran a strong second at 20:09, with Jenna Wong a few seconds
behind.

Maryknoll, with 3 finishers in the top 10 (Iolani managed that feat also),
took the team title with 49 points. Punahou was close behind at 53 points.
Iolani had 69, while Kamehameha tallied 82.

Haley Abing

In the OIA Championship races that followed, Leilehua made a strong
statement at being the best overall cross country team in the state, winning
both the boys and girls team championship.

The girls won handily with 36 points to 67 for Mililani and 93 for Kahuku.
But, compared to the boys who had 26 points to the second place Radford’s 117 it
was close!

Kristin Ali Keith was the only girl to break 20 minutes in the OIA race,
winning with a time of 19:58. Dayna Domingo was 28 seconds back at 20:26, and
Leilehua’s Savannah Lowrie was the only other girl to break 21:00 at
20:40.

Kristin Ali Keith

Bryce Jenkins continued his winning way beating his own teammate, Paul
Williams, 16:14 to 16:19. Leilehua had five runners in the top 10, taking 1, 2,
6, 7 and 10. Superb performance.

As for what will happen at States on Friday, I am going to go with Punahou
for the girls and Leilehua for the boys. For the individual championship,
admittedly always hard to predict, but I am going with Haley Abing and Bryce
Jenkins.

Bryce Jenkins

I know there could be some outer island runners out there that will
surprise me, but I’ve seen these two run too much and too well to bet against
them.

It should be fun!

ILH Football: Punahou Wins, Damien’s Bailey Dominates

Punahou Wins, Damien’s Bailey Dominates

David Kawada – Digital Sports Hawaii Content Editor

October 27, 2007

>  VIEW:  Photo Gallery from Jon B Photography

A performance like the one that Damien??s Kama Bailey put on today usually relates to a victory.  Unfortunately the opponent was the #3 ranked Punahou Buff N Blu who put on the all-around team game on both sides of the ball.  Punahou defeated Damien 55-38 at a rare 2:00p game at Punahou??s Alexander Field.

The Buff N Blu improve to 6-2 and will most likely move up to #2 in the state rankings after Kahuku??s upset loss last night.  But their season will end next week against arch-rival Iolani as St Louis clinched the ILH title and the 1 berth into the HHSAA State Tournament.

Let’s get back to Bailey.  The stats ?? 29 carries, 313
yards,  5 touchdowns.  Touchdown runs were  34, 40, 60, 8, and 41 yards
respectively.  Oh, and he also caught one pass in between some water
and oxygen breaks.

The state??s leading rusher coming into the game, Bailey now has 1671 yards and 16 touchdowns.  He averages 9.8 yards per carry.

Kama Bailey Scores Again

The Monarchs also seem to have found their quarterback in Anthony ??Bones? Tuitele.  He finished the game 8 of 17 for 149 yards and 2 INT??s.

But Punahou, as typical under Head Coach Kale Ane??s guidance, just gets better throughout the year.  Quarterback Cayman Shutter has emerged as the more consistent player going 16 of 21 for 292 yards, 1 INT, and 5 touchdowns.  He also ran for another score.

Favorite target was leading receiver Robbie Toma, who caught 4 of those TD strikes.

The running combo of Dalton Hilliard and Manti Te??o has proven to be the most dreaded  running combo in the state.  Te??o had a 63 yard touchdown run and Hilliard darted in from 5 yards out.

Damien plays PAC 5 in their ILH finale next Friday at Aloha Stadium.  Punahou will play Iolani in an early afternoon game at 3:00p

Check your local listings for the radio broadcasts for all ILH games next Friday on KUMU AM 1500.  Broadcasts will also be streamed live right here on Digital Sports Hawaii!!

OIA Football Playoffs: Farrington Moves On With Defense

Farrington Moves On With Defense

>  Check back for photo gallery

The Farrington Governors may have been concerned of
being the higher seed in this OIA Quarterfinal game after what had
happened last night.
OIA Football

But the defense had no part of those thoughts as they led their team to a 30-7 win over Campbell.  Farrington (5-2-2) will move on to play Leilehua, the upset winners over Mililani, in the 7:00p Semi Final game next Saturday at Aloha Stadium.

Campbell ends their season at  3-4-1.

The Governor defense accounted for 10 points ?? 2 safeties and an intercepted lateral return for a 40 yard touchdown.

Farrington would have their first 3 scores all within the last 2:00 of the 1st half.  Kalei Stevens returned a punt 45 yards for a touchdown.  On the ensuing Sabers possession, there was a fumble into the endzone that was recovered by a Campbell player and downed for a safety.  After the free kick, quarterback Iu Alefosiu connected with Drake Miller for a 35 yard scoring pass play.

Both teams did not run very well as Campbell??s defense also had a solid performance.

Campbell??s Samson Anguay would score on a 5 yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter for their only score.  He ended up with 9 carries for 42 yards.

Dayton Kealoha was the workhorse for the Governors with 22 carries and 68 yards.

OIA Football Playoffs: Kahuku, Mililani Upset; Waianae Advances

 Kahuku, Mililani Upset; Waianae Advances

David Kawada – Digital Sports Hawaii Content Editor

October 26, 2007

>  WATCH:  VIDEO INTERVIEW WITH COACH HERNANDEZ BELOW!
>  Check back for photo gallery

Tonight
would prove to be a stunning night in OIA Playoff history.  Both
of the top seeds from the East and the West were upset on their home
fields and subsequently ending their seasons much earlier than anyone
expected.  Waianae managed to escape and keep their State playoff
hopes alive.

Kapolei Upsets Kahuku 14-7

The
tumultuous 2007 football season comes to a screeching halt for the Red
Raider football team.  The defending state champions suffer their
first home loss in almost a decade at the hands of Kapolei 14-7.

A
small minority of parents created a dissident movement to get head
coach Reggie Torres removed from his position earlier this month.
E-mails and threats circulated the North Shore leading to meetings with
school and DOE officials, and a forced boycott of one practice by half
of the players.  The distractions finally took its toll.

The Kapolei defense came to play, holding the vaunted Kahuku running attack at bay.

“This is the biggest victory in our short history!” said Kapolei Coach Darren Hernandez.

Kapolei advances to play Waianae next Saturday in the Semi-Finals at aloha Stadium.

Leilehua Defeats Mililani in OT

Not to be outdone, the Leilehua Mules upset the West #1 Seed Mililani 27-21 in overtime at Mililani high School.

These
neighboring rivals battled to a 21-21 tie at the end of
regulation.  The Trojans got first possession in overtime and
scored on a Colin Lund filed goal.  But a roughing the kicker
penalty was accepted by Head Coach Darnell Arceneaux and the Trojans
erased the points to get the possession and the opportunity to score a
touchdown.  Leilehua was able to stop them on 4th and goal.

The Mules then took their turn. Running back Bronson Pausa would score from 2 yards out to give the Mules the victory.

Leilehua
will play either Farrington or Campbell which plays tomorrow night at
Roosevelt Stadium.  That semi-final game will be next Saturday at
Aloha Stadium.  Mililani ends their season.

Waianae Survives

Out
on the Leeward Coast, Waianae prevented a 3rd upset by defeating
Kalaheo 12-6 in a defensive battle.  The Seariders will play
Kapolei in next Saturday??s semi final game at 4:00p at Aloha Stadium.

Kalaheo, the surprise team in the OIA this year, ends their season after a gallant effort on Waianae??s home field.

ILH Football: Kamehameha Wins, St Louis Clinches Title

ILH Football: Kamehameha Wins, St Louis Clinches Title

October 26, 2007

>  LISTEN:  To archived radio broadcast- Kamehameha vs Iolani
>  VIEW:    Football Photos by coach-photos.com  or jonbphotograhy.com

KAMEHAMEHA DEFEATS IOLANI

Both teams were coming off disappointing losses from the
previous week.  Kamehameha took their 2nd loss against Punahou and thus
mathematically eliminated from a chance to win the ILH.  Iolani was
upset by PAC 5 in a Division II matchup.

Tonight it was a matter of which team would rebound
quicker.  The Warriors were able to focus and defeat the Raiders 35-21
at Aloha Stadium.

ILH Football

Kamehameha
got off to a quick start with a 14-0 lead in the 4th quarter.
Brandon Dumlao scored on a 5 yard run early in the quarter.  Rover
Conrad Scheidt intercepted a Kela Marciel and returned it into the
endzone with :21 remaining in the quarter.

In the 2nd quarter,
the only highlight for Iolani was a beautiful rollout punt by Kela
Marciel that rolled all the way to the Warrior 1-inch line.  But
Kamehameha quarterback Michael Hoke led his team on a textbook 99-yard
drive which culminated in a Truman Chun 2-yard scoring run just before
the end of the half.

The Warriors were in total control with a
21-0 halftime lead.  Raider quarterback Marciel was held to only
74 yards in the air.  The offense only mustered 92 total yards as
the Warrior defense completely stuffed the Raider running game as well.

Coach Wendall Look knows how to make halftime adjustments.  His team did just that and came out firing in the 3rd quarter.

On
the opening possession of the 2nd half, the Raiders mounted a 70 yard
drive aided by 2 Warrior penalties.  Marciel, who had been chased
out of the pocket all night, found Lionel Fujioka for a 9-yard TD
strike with 8:08 in the 3rd quarter.

Then just before the
quarter ended, Marciel and Fujioka connected again on a 28-yard scoring
play.  Kodi Look??s extra point was good and suddenly it was 21-14.

The
Warriors then began to pound the smaller and already injury-depleted
Raider defense with their running game.  Hoke would only attempt 3
passes into the 4th quarter.

In the final period, Warrior Head
Coach David Stant gambled on 4th and 1 at their own 35.  Hoke ran
a quarterback sneak which got the 1st down and kept the clock
running.  Dumlao would get his second rushing touchdown from 22
yards out to give Kamehameha some breathing room at 28-14.

A
critical play came on the ensuing kickoff with 4:51 remaining in the
game.  Micah Cagulada kicked off with a short kick that was
mishandled by Iolani and recovered by the Warriors at the Raider
35.  Backup quarterback Edmund Kamano, Jr came in and threw his
first touchdown, a 10-yard laser over the middle to a wide open Brandon
Demello.

Iolani would add one more Marciel touchdown for the final margin of 35-21.

Kamehameha
improves to 4-3-1.  Iolani, at 4-5 overall, 3-3 in ILH Division
II, would need one Damien loss or a victory over Punahou next week to
clinch another ILH D-II title and a spot in the HHSAA Tournament.

ST LOUIS CLINCHES ILH DIVISION I TITLE

In
dominant fashion, the St Louis Crusaders easily defeated the PAC 5
Wolfpack 55-10 to claim their second consecutive ILH Title, and the
school??s 34th overall.

Quarterback Micah Mamiya accounted for 5
touchdowns, 3 in the air and 2 on the ground, while orchestrating a
flawless offensive machine in the first half.  He finished with
226 yards in the air and 68 on the ground and did not play in the 2nd
half.

The Wolfpack, after their upset of Iolani last week, were
simply overmatched against the #1 team in the state.  Quarterback
Matt Milton scored on a 1-yard sneak and Josh Mun added field goal late
in the game.  But the Crusader defense swarmed everywhere and kept
giving the offense the ball.

St Louis plays Kamehameha next week
in the final regular season game.  They have the chance to
complete a 2nd consecutive undefeated ILH season.  The Crusaders
will be the number 1 Seed in the HHSAA State Tournament.

Iolani Intermediate Black Lady VB’ers Move On To Finals With Big Win Over Punahou Blue

Iolani Intermediate Black Lady VB’ers Move On To Finals With Big Win Over Punahou Blue

Alan Linsky – coach-photos.com for Digital Sports Hawaii

Octt. 25th, 2007

Talk about peaking at the right time!

This team struggled earlier in the season, losing to
both Punahou teams. But, they have now avenged both those losses and
are going to the finals of the ILH Intermediate VB tournament.

In the first game, the Lady Raiders jumped out to a 9-3 lead as the Puns struggled to get organized.

The lead extended to 12-8 but the Puns started to play
better and came all the way back to tie the game at 15-15. The Raiders
were able to withstand this run and get two going of their own, both
runs of 5-2 to close out the game at 25-19.

The second game was almost a perfect mirror of the
first. The Puns went out fast to a 7-2 lead, then 13-8 and 16-8, before
the Raiders adjusted. The Raiders worked their way back, one point at a
time all the way to 20-21, before the Puns got it going again to close
it out at 25-20.

All tied, one game a piece with the momentum slightly favoring the
Puns, both teams looked confident as the crowd excitement hit a fever
pitch.

The third game was a classic, tight all the way, with
ties at 6, 9, 11, 17, 18, 19 and 20. As the tension grew, the Raiders
responded, pulling out to a 24-21 lead and an eventual 25-22 win.

This was a great match played by two very good teams.

The Intermediate Championship will be played on Saturday, 10am at HBA against Kamehameha Blue. Should be a good one!
