Red Championship: Moanalua d. Kahuku 2-0

The
Moanalua Girls Volleyball Team has been here before.  Here being
the OIA Red Championship game.  As a perennial power, the Menehune
have always been around at the end.  But they had never gone over
the hump to actually win the title.

The monkey is off the back tonight.

The
Menehune took care of business and defeated the #1 East Seed Kahuku in
2 games, 27-25, 25-15, and claimed the OIA Red Championship.  The
match took place at Mckinley??s Student Council Gymnasium in front of a
raucous crowd.

The first game seemed to be indicative of the level of play from both teams.
Outside
hitter Kaleinani Kabalis completely dominated her competition and
played one of her best all-around matches of the season.  She put
down 20 kills, hit .447, and also had a game high 17 digs, to help lead
her team to the upset victory.

Kaylee Ponce also contributed 5 kills, including game and match point.

??I
give the credit to our players,? said Moanalua Head Coach Tommy
Lake.  ??They really regrouped themselves after we had a couple of
losses in the season and they??ve really played well since the
tournament started.?

Kahuku went back and forth with the lead in
game 1.  They reached game point first but could not put it
away.  In Game 2 the Lady Red Raiders had difficulty handling the
Menehune serves right from the beginning.  They could not get into
an offensive flow and Moanalua took full advantage of it.

Leilani
Tafuna led the team with 8 kills.  Defensively Alayna Galeai had 4
blocks and libero Nina Blake was all over the floor with 10 digs.

White Championship: Farrington d. Mckinley 2-0

Mckinley
has been a dominant force in the White Division, earning the East #1
seed.  Right behind them in the East was Farrington.  As they
say, when it comes to the playoffs, it is a whole new ballgame.

The
Lady Governors brought their ??A? game when it counted, defeating
Mckinley 25-21, 25-21, to win the OIA White Division
Championship.  They should get one of the top seeds in the HHSAA
Division II State Tournament starting next week.

Coach Reagan
Agena??s crew put together a team effort with 4 players getting 5?
kills.  Part of the effort came from Brandy and Brandy.
Outside hitter Brandy Kahanaoi-Pimental registered 6 kills along with
Taiana Faafiti-Samuseva.  Setter Brandy Vergado-Duclayan
distributed the ball well to keep the Tiger defense guessing.  She
also contributed 5 kills, along with middle blocker Keui Remigio.

??I
just told them to stay focused, relax, and play your game,? said
Agena.  ??Last time we played them I think our girls were too
tense.?

For the Lady Tigers, Juri Franzen and Pearly Togiai had
5 kills each.  Letiera Iafeta and Naleo Luis-Mateo played well in
the back row, each with 8 digs.

Kahuku Battles Moanalua For OIA Volleyball Title

Kahuku, Moanalua, For OIA Volleyball Title

David Kawada – Digital Sports Hawaii Content Editor

October 24, 2007

There will be a new OIA Girls Volleyball Champion crowned Thursday night at Mckinley High School Gymnasium.

Defending champion Roosevelt was upset Tuesday by Moanalua, 25-23, 25-16.  Head Coach Tommy Lake saw one of his key players, Kaleinani Kabalis, play one of her better all-around matches of the season.  She had 17 kills to go with good passes and sets.  If she plays equally as well in the championship match, the Kahuku defense will have their work cut out for them.  The Na Menehune defense also executed their game plan in the semi-finals. They held Roosevelt’s top hitter, Mele Yamashiro to only 8 kills.

But East #1 Seed Kahuku has more than one offensive weapon.  Coach Uila Fotu Vendiola has played as much as 18 players.  Partly because they were beating their opponents handily.  But also because she has that kind of depth.  Attacks could come from Leilani Tafuna one night, or Alyssa Wily the next.   Shanlie Kaulula’au had 5 kills in game 1 of their semi-final win over Mililani on Tuesday.

The Moanalua team took some consecutive losses toward the latter part of the season when Kabalis was not able to play.  Similarly, Kahuku got their only 2 losses at the end of the season coincidentally when all the intensity surrounding the football team were at its apex.  The Lady Red Raiders even had to battle to 3 games to defeat Kapolei in the quarterfinals.

Both teams are playing their best volleyball now.  Both coaches would agree that now is the best time to hit your peak.

Red Championship Game is set for 7:30p.  The White Championship Game between Mckinley and Farrington will precede the Red match at 6:00p.

Kamehameha Wins ILH Volleyball

Kamehameha Wins ILH Volleyball

With
more than 1200 island volleyball fans screaming on every point,
top-ranked Kamehameha got the last gut-wrenching yell, edging
second-ranked Iolani in the ILH girls volleyball title match Tuesday
night, 25-22, 27-25.

When all-American senior outside hitter Kanani Herring came screaming
in from the backrow to hammer down the last of her match high 14 kills,
the Warriors and their fans erupted in celebration.  It was the
rubber match in a series of heart-stopping games between the state??s
top two teams, with Iolani winning the first round, then Kamehameha
coming back to take the next two by winning the second round tournament
format, plus the ensuing championship match Tuesday at Iolani.

??We achieved our goal, which was to be the #1-seed in the States,? said Herring, who has
verbally committed to play for the University of Hawaii Wahine next
season.  ??They almost took it away from us for awhile, but we got
it back.  Iolani played wonderful.  We were just having a
ball out there.?

Herring was helped out by fellow senior outside hitter, Bekah Torres,
who pounded down six of her 10 kills in the second game.  Iolani
was led by their senior sparkplug, outside hitter Leinani Keanini, who
also pounded down 10 kills on the night.

??My team, we played with heart and fought for every last point,?
Keanini said.  ??It was a game that could have gone either way.?

Herring on the Block

How true that was!  And the fans who streamed into Iolani??s gym
knew it.  Nearly 15 minutes before the start of the match, it was
announced that every seat was taken, and the those in the overflow
crowd would get a chance to watch on closed-circuit TV in the school??s
upper gymnasium.  Many of the fans held signs, and others dressed
up.  None were disappointed.
     ??I was
feeding off their energy,? Keanini said.  Volleyball fans on both
teams fed off the energy of watching Keanini battle Herring throughout
the first game, with each player dominating the **** statistics??both
had six each in that first game.
     When
Keanini hammered down a **** from the backrow, Iolani had battled back
from a three-point deficit to tie the game at 7-all.  Herring then
worked her spectacular magic, hitting three monstrous kills in a matter
of moments and Kamehameha led 14-10.

insert text

Iolani
was forced to come back, and they did so.  Lauren Minkel went
cross-court with a **** as the Raiders scored seven of the next nine
points and eventually led it 17-16.  But Kamehameha setter Caitlin
Andrade found Torres and Herring for back-to-back kills and the
Warriors were suddenly on top by three points, 21-18.
The dynamic hitting duo of Torres and Herring
continued to pour it on for the next few points, and the Warriors
finally prevailed in game one, 25-22.
??When they had to, they went to their best,
Kanani and Bekah,? Iolani head coach Jenic Tumaneng said.  ??It was
a great game.?
iolani Attack

Indeed, it was.  Amazingly, game two was even better, as both
teams stepped it up to a level that had volleyball fans from both teams
clamoring for more.
     Iolani put together an
early run with Lauren Ching and Chelsea Hardin helping the Raiders to
an early 7-4 lead.  When Mahina Haina scored on a block at the
net, the Raiders were up 10-7.  A couple of points later, the lead
was up to four and Warriors head coach Chris Blake knew it was time for
a time-out.
??Iolani put us in a hole, but our girls showed character and heart and were so resilient,? he said.

When Blake??s Warriors came out of the timeout, they responded with a
run of their own.  Andrade??s ace and then a big **** from Jordan
Meredith put Kamehameha on top.  Torres then followed with a
masterful step-out move for the **** and the Warriors were up,
21-19.  When Herring smashed down back-to-back kills from opposite
sides, Kamehameha was on the verge of victory, up 24-22.

That??s when Iolani re-grouped, big time.  A passing error by
Kamehameha, followed by a block in the middle by Haina, and a monstrous
facial by Keanini put Iolani in the lead, 25-24.  The crowd was
nearly delirious; the tension was mind-numbing.

??When you have the top two teams playing at that level, someone??s got
to lose.  It was a battle all the way,? Tumaneng said.
??We were losing; we needed to stay focused,? Torres said.  ??We stayed calm.?

That calm belied the frenzied scene in the stands where fans of both
teams cheered on their favorites.  Finally, Kamehameha got the
lead back and they went to their ace, Herring, for match point.
Her monstrous **** in which she seemed to fly several feet in mid-air
from the backrow ended an awesome struggle between two magnificent
teams.
??It was a relief,? said Torres.  ??We worked so hard; now we??re ILH champs!?

But don??t think it??s the last time these two juggernauts of Hawaii high
school volleyball will meet.  Both teams qualified for the state
tournament next week in Hilo.  Don??t be surprised if they??re back
at it again on November 3rd for the state title.
??I told the girls ??that was a battle.  We go to war next week??,? Tumaneng said.
This time, the war for the ILH went to the Warriors.

??I want to play them again for the state championship,? Keanini said
afterwards.  ??I want so much to get that second chance.?

For Keanini and her Iolani teammates, they may get that chance.
But for now, the first title??the conference championship??belongs to
Kamehameha.
??It was a great win,? said Blake.  ??It was a great team effort.?

Saint Louis?? Christopher Lam and Punahou??s Meilin Jia-Richards capture individual crowns.

The Punahou boys air riflery team, under head coach Karen Finley,
captured their third-straight air riflery crown, while the Sacred
Hearts girls team secured their second-straight state title at the
Civilian Marksmanship Program/HHSAA Air Riflery State Championships,
Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

This is the second girls?? championship for Sacred Hearts
head coach Alan Tokumura, although the Lancers have won six of the nine
state championships beginning in 1999.  The Lancers tallied a team
total 2,080 points, which ranks as the fifth highest point total in the
short history of the tournament.  More amazingly, the top four shooters
from Sacred Hearts placed in the top six, while the two other Lancers
finished 15th and 16th.

Punahou??s Meilin Jia-Richards shot a 538 to assist her team to a second place finish with 2,069 points.

Saint Louis?? Christopher Lam shot 522 to claim the individual state
title.  Runner-up Davin Lee of Punahou was just two points shy of first
place, despite having the top of his target dislodged and hanging at a
45-degree angle during the kneeling position of the competition.  In
spite of the adversity of shooting at a bending target, Lee managed to
score a 183, his best score of the three positions.  However, it wasn??t
enough to best the ILH state champion Lam.

Mid-Pacific senior and 2006 individual defending
state champion Jordan Muratsuchi had a shot at making state tournament
history by being the first repeat state champion, but fell short by a
mere 11 points to finish tied for 10th place.  The top 15
finishers in both boys and girls competition earn medals.

Rounding out the top five in the boys?? competition include Kauai??s
Jason Cabot, Konawaena??s Davis Nakashima and Punahou??s Nigel Kojimoto.

The rubber match is set between Kamehameha and Iolani.
The 2 top ranked teams in the state will battle it out for the ILH
Girls Volleyball Championship at 6:00p on Tuesday at Iolani School.

Each team has suffered their only defeat at the hands of
the other.  The Lady Warriors 2-0 shutout victory last Saturday in the
playoff round has forced this winner-take-all game.

Kamehameha has assembled one of the most talented teams in Hawaii high
school history with all 7 starters committed to playing next year on
the collegiate level.  Kanani Herring and Bekah Torres have been
dominant all year.

Battle at the net

Iolani will be the underdog.  But they have the home court.  Leinani Keanini and Chelsea Hardin led their team to the upset no one thought could be done earlier in the season.  As the saying goes, once there is a ***** in the armor, it becomes easier to break through it.

Both teams will be hammering away Tuesday for a highly anticipated match.
