The rare talents of Island School’s Pierce Murphy and Leilehua’s Margarito Martinez are improving the state of boys cross country in Hawaii

By Stanley Lee / Special to Star-Advertiser

How fast will they go?

Defending state champion Margarito Martinez of Leilehua is looking for fast times and a good challenge from Island School’s Pierce Murphy at Thursday’s state cross country championships. The two top runners in the state have pushed each other in the past and are nudging the sport into new territory with their fast times.

Recent state champions dominated and ran away from the competition at past state meets. This one will be much different, as Martinez and Murphy will both contend for the boys title at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park. The girls race starts at 9 a.m. with the boys to follow.

“I’m hoping to give Pierce a challenge, to push each other,” said Martinez, a senior. “I’m not really looking forward to beating him, but looking more toward running with him. It’s exhilarating to have someone right there next to you. I appreciate him. He’s always there. He knows how to race, he’s a great racer, the best runner here in Hawaii.”

Martinez won last year’s state championship held at Island School on Kauai, while Murphy was second. Murphy, a senior and the state track champion in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters, won this year’s 3-mile ‘Iolani Invitational in 15 minutes, 25.92 seconds, while Martinez was second in 15:51.00. Rarely has there been more than one runner in the state who has gone under 16 minutes at that distance. It’s plausible they can both do that at CORP, a grassy and hilly course. Martinez won last week’s Oahu Interscholastic Association championship at CORP with a time of 15:58.17.

“This year, me and Pierce are just changing the sport for Hawaii,” Martinez said. “We’re improving the sport. I just want to make Hawaii into a legitimate running state, for other states to take us seriously.”

Martinez came into this season in different form from last year. He was finally able to put in the long mileage during summer workouts, did more weightlifting and also dropped some weight. Coach Shawn Nakata said Martinez, who plans to run in college next year, has emerged as a vocal leader for the team, giving talks to the squad before races and organizing team-bonding activities.

“He’s very dedicated, he’s always giving 100 percent in running,” said Margarito’s younger brother and teammate Dylan Martinez, a sophomore who finished third in the OIA. “I haven’t seen him put that much effort into anything but that. He’s done so many sports. He’s even done football. I’ve never seen him so dedicated to something ever in my life.”

Surprisingly, neither of the Martinez brothers did well when they each took up running in the sixth grade. But as Margarito started to excel, Dylan wondered if this was something that ran in the family.

“I’ve learned (from my brother) that if you put your mind to it, it’s always going to be the way you want it to be,” Dylan said. “If you want to be first, you can be first. It’s all in your mind. He’s taught to be strong up here. Running is all mental. He’s taught me to be strong mentally.”

Murphy won’t be the only runner making a name for his small school this week. Parker School qualified its entire boys team by virtue of its runner-up finish at the Big Island Interscholastic Federation championships.

Kamehameha of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu is the defending boys state champion. At last week’s league championships that were both held at CORP, the times of Kamehameha’s and Leilehua’s top five runners were nearly identical. Each team’s top five finishers contribute to their team’s score.

In the girls race, defending state champion Elli Brady is finally hitting her stride. The sophomore ran with injuries earlier in the season, but felt stronger physically and mentally in winning last week’s ILH championship.

Freshman Dakota Grossman of Maui’s Seabury Hall is expected to challenge for the state title. She’s traveled all over to compete against the state’s top runners this year, winning races on Oahu, the Big Island and Maui. The Punahou girls have won the last five state titles. Hawaii Prep, the BIIF champion, raced on the state course earlier this season en route to winning the Honolulu Marathon Invitational.

No. 1 Kahuku opened its postseason playing the same dominating brand of football it has all season.

Aofaga Wily rushed for 129 yards and four touchdowns and Tyrone Brown carried the ball 11 times for 125 yards and a score to lead the Red Raiders over Radford 52-7 last night in the quarterfinals of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red playoffs at Carleton Weimer Field.

Kahuku (9-0), the top seed out of the East, advances to play the winner of tonight’s game between Leilehua and Castle next weekend at Aloha Stadium.

The two-time defending league champions haven’t lost in the OIA playoffs since 2007, when Kapolei shocked Kahuku in the opening round, ending its season.

Brown, who scored on a 17-yard run to cap a 20-point second quarter, said the team used it as motivation during the week.

“Coach just reminded us that this is our house and not to take anyone lightly from now on,” Brown said.

Wily has stepped up as the clear No. 1 back in Kahuku’s system, getting the lion’s share of carries in recent weeks.

Last night saw both running backs working at their best as they easily topped the 100-yard mark, with Brown averaging more than 11 yards a carry.

“When both of us are clicking like that, everything clicks because our (offensive) line just flows and they are used to us doing that in practice,” Brown said.

The Rams (5-5) had nothing to lose and played like it early. Quarterback Maika Ulufale completed six of his first eight passes, including a 12-yard touchdown to Dorsey Norris to tie the game at 7-all at the end of the first quarter.

The Red Raiders made adjustments on defense and Ulufale completed only 13 of his next 35 throws, including three interceptions that led to three Kahuku touchdowns and 45 unanswered points.

“Our defensive coaches said that our defensive linemen needed to be more disciplined on the bootlegs,” Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said. “We switched up some of our blitzes to force them to throw the ball earlier than they wanted to, which set up our interceptions.”

Kawehena Johnson got the first of three, taking his back 30 yards for a touchdown to give Kahuku a 20-7 lead. Brown added his 17-yard scoring run later in the quarter, and Kahuku nearly scored with no time remaining as Shairone Thompson hauled in a 42-yard pass from Evan Moe but was tackled at the 1-yard line.

Wily put the game away with two more rushing touchdowns in the second half, and Moe, who was 10-for-16 for 150 yards, threw his only touchdown pass, a 10-yard strike to Benetton Fonua.

Thompson finished with four catches for 82 yards, and Punga Vea hauled in four passes for 49 yards.

Radford was led by Andrew Togialua, who had six catches for 53 yards, and running back Phil Hogan, who was effective out of the backfield catching five balls for 56 yards.

Kahuku’s defense accounted for a second touchdown when Rashaan Falemalu, brother of University of Hawaii defensive end Paipai Falemalu, returned a fumble 20 yards for a score late in the third quarter.

Sand plan helps Kahuku win OIA volleyball title

Honolulu StarAdvertiser

Paul Honda

The in-sand-ity continues.

Kahuku took Moanalua’s best shots and still managed a 25-23, 25-21, 28-26 sweep to claim the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference championship last night at McKinley Student Council Gym.

Kahuku (14-2) will have a first-round bye when the state championships begin Wednesday on Maui. It was a fitting end to the OIA season for Kahuku, a team that worked out at the beach six times a week during the summer — a 7 a.m. routine coach Kaniela Kalama calls “in-sand-ity.”

Setter Teuila Nautu was unstoppable, setting teammates in every direction to stifle a hearty effort by Na Menehune. Nautu finished with 34 assists and five kills, including a timely left-handed dump on game point to end the opening set.

“We’ve been working on being consistent. We used to drop low and got super high, so we’ve worked on that,” Blake said.

Sophomore Lepeka Kalulu-Sugai pounded 13 kills and senior Elizabeth Blake had nine. Ho’onani Apo and middle Pati Anae had six kills each and fortified the Lady Raiders’ block.

“We move on to states! Hopefully, we win states,” Apo said.

Though they registered just two roofs, their control of the net kept Moanalua from running away during the few runs they started.

“Every time we started to play well, they played better,” Na Menehune coach Tommy Lake said. “We didn’t play as hard Tuesday as we did tonight.”

Kahuku, ranked No. 4 in the Star-Advertiser Top 10, downed No. 6 Moanalua on Tuesday to remain unbeaten in the double-elimination format. Moanalua had to rally in the fifth set to overcome Mililani on Wednesday to stay alive, but fatigue was not an issue yesterday.

“We were ready to play. We had enough energy,” Lake added. “(Kahuku) has a little size on us and they have an outstanding setter, and Ho’o and Lizzy are really smart hitters. They can hit anywhere and they’re very dependable.”
