St. Louis-Kailua Scoring Summary

St. Louis-Kailua Scoring Summary

Bob Hogue Digital Sports Hawaii Senior Correspondent

>Safety in Number–St. Louis Rolls over Kailua, 48-7

It took the St. Louis Crusader several minutes to get in synch Friday

 night against Kailua,
but when they got there, they really got in synch in

 a hurry.

The Crusaders turned the ball over on downs on their first possession
and Kailua, rotating quarterbacks Kale Sumner
and Kenny Ellis on every play, marched from its own 30-yard line to the St. Louis
34-yard-line.  Kaleo Wong then broke free
for what looked like a good gain, but he was hit from behind, forcing a fumble
that the Crusaders recovered at their own 9-yard line.

The first big offensive play for St.
Louis
came a couple plays later when senior
quarterback Micah Mamiya hit junior slotback Lucas Gonsalves on a short pass.  Gonsalves then made some nifty moves in the
open field to pick up 23 yards and a first down.  After a holding call pushed the ball back to
the 30, Mamiya hit a streaking Ryan Iaea over the middle and nobody would catch
the senior slotback.  The 70-yard
touchdown culminated a 6-play 91-yard drive to give the Crusaders a 7-nothing
lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Joseph Lacaden chased down the Kailua kick returner at the 10-yard line and
the Crusaders had the Surfriders backed up near their own goal-line.  On the very next play, the St. Louis defensive line came hard with big
Geordon Hanahano breaking through and tackling Sumner in the endzone for a
safety.  That made it 9-nothing St. Louis.

A scoring barrage that took a mere 33 seconds continued.  On the ensuing free kick, Tamatoa DeMello
broke free and went 72 yards for an apparent score.  Unfortunately for DeMello, a block that
occurred several yards behind him was flagged for a penalty, and the ball was
brought back to the Kailua
40-yard line.  No problem.  On the very next play, Mamiya hit Billy
Stutzmann on a high-arching pass down the sidelines and Stutzmann got to the
goal-line as the Crusaders went on top 16-nothing.  The three scores came between the 3:38 and
3:05 mark of the first quarter.

The first quarter scoring wasn??t over.
On Kailua??s
next possession, senior defensive lineman Ryan Eastman and senior linebacker
Kapa??ihi Umebayashi had back-to-back tackles for losses and then on 4th
down, the ball was snapped over the head of the Surfrider punter.  Senior defensive back Brandon McKee tackled
the Kailua punter in the endzone and the St. Louis lead was
18-nothing.

A minute and a half later, the Crusaders scored again, this time very
early in the second quarter.  A 53-yard
drive took just four plays with Mamiya hitting Gonsalves on a pass to the
sidelines and the speedy junior turned on the afterburners up the sidelines for
a 44-yard touchdown and a 25-nothing St.
Louis
lead.

The five scores??three touchdowns and two safeties??took a total of 3
minutes and 54 seconds.

The Crusader defense continued to step up later in the half.  Sophomore defensive back Marcus Umu stepped
in front of a Sumner pass and then followed a wall of blockers for a 50-yard
interception return for a touchdown.
That pushed the St. Louis
lead to 32-nothing.

On Kailua??s
next possession, the ball was snapped out of the back of the endzone on fourth
down, resulting in another safety.  St. Louis scored on three
safeties in the first half and led 34-nothing.

But they weren??t through with their first half scoring, as they put
together a 45-yard drive in just five plays just before intermission.  The last score of the half came on a leaping
catch by DeMello??probably the catch of the night??in the back of the endzone on
a 22-yard pass from Mamiya to make the score 41-nothing at halftime.

In that first half, the St. Louis defense scored a total of 12 points??on
an interception return and three safeties??and the offense got touchdown
receptions from four different receivers??DeMello, Gonsalves, Iaea, and
Stutzmann.  Mamiya completed 9 of 17
passes for 232 yards and four touchdowns.
Warren Spencer added four extra points to complete the impressive
scoring parade.

In the second half, with a running clock, the starters rested, but St. Louis scored early in
the fourth quarter on a 13-play, 66-yard drive.
Sophomore runningback Hoku Isaia pushed across the final yard to put the
Crusaders up 48-nothing.

Kailua
answered with its own long drive.  Junior
quarterbacks Ellis and Sumner each made big plays in a 12-play, 80-yard drive
that consumed over ten minutes on the clock.
Ellis ran for two first downs, including a 20-yard dash to the 15-yard
line.  Then with just over a minute left,
Sumner found Dominique Romero in the endzone for the first Surfrider touchdown
of the pre-season.  That made the final
score 48-7.

Kailua starts OIA conference play next
week, while top-ranked St. Louis plays Aiea next in another
pre-season contest, then waits for their ILH season to start next month.

WAIANAE
13 – MILILANI 9

VARSITY — In a defensive struggle – Waianae rallied from a 9-0 deficit
at home to win 13-9 in a OIA Red West Division Match-Up.
The Seariders improved to 2-0 on the season, Mililani fell to 1-1.
Numerous penalties and critical drive ending turnovers between the two
teams was the a continuous trend throughout the game. However, Waianae
made just a couple more plays then Mililani did when it counted to pull
out the victory.

Mililani lost out on four points with its special teams
– The Trojans missed a field goal attempt on its opening drive of the
game and then had a point after touchdown kick attempt blocked. Ironic,
the final margin of victory for the Seariders was fourt points.
Next week, Waianae will host another top ranked team as the Iolani
Raiders visit the Leeward Coast. Mililani looks to bounce back and will
host Pac-Five on its campus.

WAIANAE 40 – MILILANI 0
JV — The Searider defense proved to be too much for the Trojans,
scoring five touchdowns in a 40-0 victory. Waianae returned five
interceptions for scores.

KAMEHAMEHA
21 – CASTLE 12

VARSITY — In its season opener, Kamehameha went on a road trip to the
Windward side of the island and defeated Castle 21-12 at Castle High
Schol.
The Warriors 1-0, will host Campbell next week at Kamehameha School.
The host Knights, who lost 43-6 to Mililani last week, proved to be
tough on its home field but fell to 0-2 on the season. The Knights will
now prepare for OIA Red East Division games starting next week.
The Warriors jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter but
found themselves in a 14-12 dogfight at halftime. The score remained
the same until midway through the fourth quarter. The Warriors managed
to score an insurance touchdown to seal the victory over the scrappy
Knights.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS—ST. LOUIS ROLLS OVER KAILUA, 48-7

SAFETY IN NUMBERS—ST. LOUIS ROLLS OVER KAILUA, 48-7

Bob Hogue Digital Sports Hawaii Senior Correspondent

33 seconds.  That??s all it took for the St. Louis Crusaders to explode Friday night in Kailua.

In a span of just 33 seconds late in the first
quarter, the Crusaders struck for 16 points??two touchdowns and a
safety.  After that, it was really no contest as top-ranked St.
Louis whipped the Surfriders, 48-7.

??Once things started clicking, it kind of
snowballed out there,? said Crusader Head Coach Delbert Tengan.

Snowballed is probably the right term to
describe what occurred on a humid summer night in the crossover
pre-season game between traditional ILH and OIA powerhouses.

Click here for other game artilces!

With 3:38 remaining in the first quarter,
Crusader senior quarterback Micah Mamiya, who had misfired on six of
his first eight passes, hit a streaking Ryan Iaea over the middle and
Iaea took it to the house, 70 yards for a St. Louis touchdown.
     A few seconds later, highly-recruited
defensive lineman Geordon Hanahano chased down Kailua quarterback Kale
Sumner for a safety and it was 9-nothing St. Louis.
     After a penalty negated a potential 72-yard
return for a touchdown by Tamatoa DeMello on the ensuing kick, the
Crusaders scored on their very first offensive play??a 40-yard strike
from Mamiya to speedy junior receiver Billy Stutzmann to make it
16-nothing Crusaders with 3:05 left in the quarter.

Game photos provided by St. Louis Senior Josh Saio-  Thaela Catala Photography Class!

Add on a couple of extra points by Warren
Spencer, and you can almost call the Crusaders the two-second club, as
they scored 16 points in only 33 seconds.
??We started putting it together after Coach
talked to us,? Mamiya said after the game.  ??When we got used to
it, things started to happen.?
Mamiya finished 9 of 17 passing for 232 yards
and four touchdowns as the starters played only the first half for St.
Louis.  Iaea had three receptions for 96 yards and a
touchdown.  DeMello also caught three passes for 29 yards and a
touchdown.  Stutzmann caught that one pass for a 40-yard score and
junior speedster Lucas Gonsalves added two receptions for 67 yards,
including a 44-yard dash down the sidelines for a touchdown.
??It??s fun out there,? Gonsalves said.
The St. Louis defense also had fun, scoring no
less than 12 points on three safeties and a 50-yard interception return
by Marcus Umu.  The three safeties all came in the first half and
might be a school record, according to old-timers.  Two of the
safeties occurred when Kailua had errant snaps in punt formation.

Game photos provided by St. Louis Senior Josh Saio-  Thaela Catala Photography Class!

??Everybody did a good job out there??both the
defense and the offense,? said senior defensive back Brandon
McKee.  ??We gained enthusiasm off each other??s big plays and built
off that.?
The 41-point victory improved the unbeaten St.
Louis record to 2-0.  The Crusaders face another OIA foe, Aiea,
next week.  Then, they get a three way break before opening the
tough ILH season against powerful Punahou.
??We aren??t perfect yet,? said DeMello.
??But we did really good.  If we work hard, we??ll get better each
week.?
That??s the point that might scare other
teams.  Because right now, both the St. Louis offense and defense
are doing the job.
??For a pre-season game, we got the best of
both worlds,? said Tengan.  ??The offense and defense played well
and a lot of guys got to play.  Plus, nobody got hurt.  So,
we??re happy.?

Game photos provided by St. Louis Senior Josh Saio-  Thaela Catala Photography Class!

     Meanwhile, Kailua rotated quarterbacks between
Sumner and fellow junior Kenny Ellis.  The two combined for a late
12-play 80-yard drive that consumed 10-minutes of the fourth
quarter.  The long drive culminated with the Surfriders first
touchdown of the pre-season, a 15-yard pass from Sumner to Dominique
Romero to get Kailua on the board.
The Surfriders, who open OIA conference play next week, saw their pre-season record drop to 1-1.
St. Louis dropped virtually nothing except
points, and they did that in very quick fashion.  You can take it
to the bank that they??ll be ranked number one again this week.
