GET YOUR VOLLEYBALL FIX IN KAPALAMA

GET YOUR VOLLEYBALL FIX IN KAPALAMA

David Kawada Digital Sports Hawaii Correspondent

Sometimes
there is just too much of a good thing.  If you like girls
volleyball, then try to digest 16 teams, 2 gyms, in 3 days.  This
is the 4th Annual Kamehameha Schools Hawaii Volleyball Invitational,
running today through Saturday at the Kapalama Campus.

 Teams participating
are from the ILH ?? Kamehameha, Punahou, Maryknoll, Mid-Pac, La Pietra,
Le Jardin, and Kamehameha White & Blue (JV level); the OIA ??
Roosevelt, Moanalua, Kahuku, Mililani, Aiea, Radford, and Leilehua; and
from the BIIF – Kamehameha-Hawaii.  This will be the final
pre-season tune up for all teams before league play starts next week.

The Lady Warriors will enter the 2007 season with the bulls eye on
their backs.  That??s nothing new for the 2-time defending state
champions.  Fifth year head coach, and tournament director Chris
Blake knows his team is confident, but not complacent.

??The strength of our team is our team.  Our girls know that every
part is an important part (of the team),? says Blake.  Kamehameha
will have 6 returning starters led by 2-time State Player of the Year
Kanani Herring.  The future Rainbow Wahine looked dominant on this
first day of the tournament versus Radford, Le Jardin, and
Kahuku.  The Lady Warriors shut out each team.

Punahou, under Coach Jim Iams, also looks ready to battle Kamehameha in
the ILH season, which starts next week.  The Buff N Blu also shut
out their opponents ?? La Pietra, Kamehameha-Blue, and Mililani.

??We lost some firepower from last year.  But we have a strong
group for this year,? said Iams.  He will look to Keanini Anu,
Pihana Kea, and Diana Hiromoto to lead the team this Fall.

The OIA is represented by their perennial title contenders in
Roosevelt, Moanalua, and Kahuku.  Moanalua took all 3 games from
Aiea and Bryan Camello??s Rough Riders took 2 of 3 from
Kamehameha-White.  Kahuku, although losing all 3 games to
Kamehameha, gave the defending champions the stiffest competition of
the day.

ROOSEVELT HOPES TO LIGHT IT UP!

ROOSEVELT HOPES TO LIGHT IT UP!

Bob Hogue Digital Sports Hawaii Senior Correspondent

It was like being invited to the prom, but you get locked in the
closet.  That must have been how the
Roosevelt Rough Riders felt when they arrived for their pre-season game against
Campbell last
weekend.

A couple of hours before opening kickoff, officials discovered that
thieves had stolen copper wiring from the Campbell
football lights.  That made it impossible
for the lights to come on and the game had to be cancelled.

   Roosevelt Head Coach Les
Parrilla said the game would not be made up.
??We??ll concentrate on the start of our season against Kalani this Friday
night,? Parrilla said.

Parrilla expects his team will light up a few stadiums this season, if
not with the shear size of his team, but with quickness and creativity.  ??We like to make it fun for our kids,?
Parrilla said.  ??Sometimes that means
thinking out of the box.?

Roosevelt thrilled the local high
school football world a couple of years ago when Parrilla and his staff
concocted crazy unbalanced formations that allowed the Rough Riders to knock
off perennial powerhouse Kahuku.  ??We??re
not big, so we give ourselves a chance to win,? he said.  ??If that means a little duck and goose, or
penguin and swan, we??ll be as creative as we have to be.  We may not actually resort to that this year,
but we could if need be.?

The 2007 Rough Riders are in the White Conference, a step down from
their days in the powerful Red Division.
??Kaimuki and Waipahu
are probably the favorites in the White, but we??ll be there,? he said.

??We??re still very young, but we??ve got some kids who can play.  And we??ve got good quickness,? Parrilla said.

The Rough Riders are expected to use two quarterbacks when they play their
belated opener this Friday against Kalani.
5-foot 10-inch junior Lowen Kahoolihala will rotate with fellow junior,
6-footer Shon Fujii.  ??Loah was the
starter last year until he suffered a concussion.  Shon was the starter on the junior varsity
team.  Both of them can put decent
numbers up and we may have to throw like crazy,? the head coach said.

The main target for the Rough Rider quarterbacks will be 5-foot 10-inch
senior Justin Otaguro.  ??He??s one of the
best receivers in the league,? Parrilla said.

Roosevelt??s chief running threat will
be two-way player Ranson Tuitama, a powerfully-built senior at 5-foot 9-inches
tall and weighing in at 225 pounds.
Tuitama is also the ??Riders toughest linebacker.

The challenge for Roosevelt, as always,
will be the lack of size on the offensive line.
??We probably average about 5-10 and 210 pounds,? Parrilla said.  One of the key members of that offensive line
is senior Alton Townsend.

Defensively, the ??Riders do have one big lineman??6-foot 3-inch 230 pound
junior Asipa Manu.  Manu is the biggest
to line up on the defensive side of the football, but he may not be the
toughest.  That honor goes to mighty
might Zach Hamasaki, who is listed at 5-5 and 130 pounds.  ??He??s probably closer to 112 pounds, but he??s
as feisty as ever,? Parrilla said.

Roosevelt is hoping to re-build the
tradition of great Rough Rider teams of the past.  It wasn??t too many years ago that the ??Riders
featured three guys named Chad.  Chad Owens, Chad Kaapuni, and Chad Kalilimoku,
all of whom had standout careers at the University of Hawaii.

??The years we had the three of them was really something,? Parrilla
said.

Parrilla is hoping to discover a few more
??really somethings? in 2007.  So, keep
the lights on for Roosevelt football.

Punahou-McKinley Game Summary

Punahou earned over 600 yards in total offense Saturday afternoon as the
Buffanblue overpowered the McKinley Tigers, 56-18.  It was the first game of the pre-season for
both teams and a rekindling of a long-lost rivalry between two old Honolulu schools.

McKinley got the opening kickoff, but its drive stalled when a
third-down snap sailed

over Tiger quarterback Earvin Sione??s head.  Punahou linebacker Manti Te??o swooped in

 to tackle
Sione at the one yard line. (Photo by Heather Horn)

After the multi-talented Sione got off a 59-yard punt, Punahou??s first
drive began at its own 47 yard line.
Kimo Makaula, who would rotate with fellow junior Cayman Shutter at
quarterback, completed passes to Keola Kane, Dalton Hilliard, and Kameron
Steinhoff before Te??o smashed in from the four yard line to give Punahou a
7-nothing lead.  The drive covered 53
yards in just five plays.

McKinley answered back later in the first quarter.

The Tiger drive followed the only Punahou
punt of

the game and began at their own 27-yard line.  On

second and eight from the Tiger 29-yard
line,

Sione tossed a short pass to big Tavita Woodward

 on the right side and
Woodward rumbled 60 yards

to the Punahou 11-yard line.  Sione needed just

 two plays to score from
there, dashing six yards

and then five yards for the Tiger touchdown to cut

 the
deficit to 7-6.  The drive covered 71
yards in

 only four plays.

McKinley QB Earvin Sione

The Buffanblue answered just as quickly.
On a drive that started at their own 20, Makaula found Kane for a 14
yard gain and a first down.  Two plays
netted only four yards, but then Shutter found Steinhoff over the middle and
the 6-foot 4, 200-pounder broke a tackle at the McKinley 25-yard line and
powered into the endzone to complete a 62-yard run and a 13-6 lead.  That drive also took just four plays and
covered 80 yards.

Punahou upped its lead in the second quarter and its third scoring drive
took just one play!  Shutter hit a
streaking Robbie Toma on a 63-yard strike and when Robert Izuta??s extra point
sailed through the uprights, the Buffanblue led it 20-6.

After a Punahou fumble at McKinley??s 18-yard line, the Tigers got right
back in it.  On third and four from their
own 24, Sione found Tavita Woodward again, and this time the big guy knocked
over a would-be tackler at the 40 and broke free for a 76-yard Tiger
touchdown.  The extra point failed again,
but the 82-yard drive needed just three plays, and Punahou??s lead had been cut
to 20-12.

The high-scoring first half continued.
Punahou??s subsequent possession started at its own 33-yard line.  Makaula fired a pass over the middle where
the talented Toma made a leaping acrobatic grab for a 25-yard gain.  Two plays later, Shutter came in and teamed
with Toma for a 12-yard pass play.  The
six-play, 67-yard drive culminated with a Shutter pass to Te??o, who sped past
would-be defenders to complete a 24-yard touchdown play.  Hilliard ran in for the two-point conversion
and Punahou led it 28-12.

Punahou??s completed the scoring in its torrid offensive first half with
an eight play 84-yard drive.  Makaula
completed passes to Galen Arakawa and Steinhoff to push the ball across
midfield, and then Shutter rotated in and found a streaking Hilliard on the
sideline for a 46-yard gain to the Tigers?? four-yard line.  After a penalty, Hilliard scored from the two
to push Punahou??s halftime lead to 35-12.

At intermission, Punahou had nearly 400 yards in total offense.

In the second half, the Buffanblue scoring parade continued. The speedy
Arakawa took the second-half kickoff and returned it to the McKinley 49-yard
line.  Makaula completed passes to
Steinhoff, Hilliard and Kale to advance the ball to the Tigers 25-yard line.  The 7-play drive culminated when Shutter completed
passes to Michael Kawano and an 11-yard touchdown strike to Kane to up the
Punahou lead to 42-12.

That??s when the real fun began.
Late in the third quarter, McKinley took advantage of a Punahou fumble
to put together their longest drive of the game.  The biggest play of the eight-play drive was
a 30-yard reverse to Theodore Spensor.
The Tigers had the ball first and goal at the Buffanblue four-yard line.

That??s when Punahou??s defense took center stage.  Kingston Satele netted only two yards on two
carries, and then on third down Sione ran a quarterback draw to within inches
of the goal line.  On fourth and inches,
Sione tried another keeper, but the Buffanblue defensive line stiffened to keep
him out of the endzone.

That meant Punahou would start at about its

own one-foot line.  A penalty pushed the

 Buffanblue back half the
distance to the goal.  With

 the end of
the ball virtually hovering over the

goal-line, Makaula handed off to Te??o who
broke

off-tackle and dashed into the open-field.  When it

appeared he might be caught around
mid-field, the

highly-recruited junior put his speed into another

 gear and sped
off to a 99-yard touchdown.  Te??o??s

 run
officially equaled the longest-run from

 scrimmage in high school football
history.  The

extra point made the score 49-12
Punahou after

 three quarter.

Manti Te’o ran for 110 yards, including a 99-yarder (Photo by Heather Horn)

With the clock running in the fourth, the Buffanblue took advantage of a
Tiger fumble and speedy sophomore Stabren Caires blazed 11 yards for a
touchdown to push the Punahou lead to 56-12.

The Tigers showed great pride, however, to close out the scoring on
their final possession.  McKinley put
together a seven-play, 66-yard drive including a 15-yard reverse by Justin
Bassel and four straight completions by Sione.
With the clock down to three seconds, Sione found Tana Woodward in the
endzone on the game??s final play to make the final score 56-18.

Punahou, considered a title contender in the ILH, starts the season
1-0.  McKinley, trying to re-gain its
once proud winning tradition, starts the season at 0-1.  Both teams should provide similar fireworks
throughout the 2007 season.

The Longest Yards- Punahou whips McKinley, 56-18

The Longest Yards- Punahou whips McKinley, 56-18

Bob Hogue Digital Sports Hawaii Senior Correspondent

Check back for Punahou’s “VIDEO INTRODUCTION”

     No matter
what anyone says officially, you can credit Punahou??s Manti Te??o with the
longest run from scrimmage in high school football history.  Te??o??s third quarter dash against McKinley
will be officially credited for 99-yards, but anyone who was at the game knows
otherwise.

??The back of the ball was virtually touching the (goal) line,? Te??o said
after the game.  Any further back, and
the ball would have been in the endzone.

Punahou’s #5 Manti Te’o  had a career day on both sides of the  ball!

Here??s how it happened.  McKinley
quarterback Earvin Sione was stopped just inches shy of the goal line on the 4th
down when Punahou??s defensive line stuffed the 6-foot 5-inch senior
quarterback.  Moments after the
Buffanblue took over on downs, they were penalized half the distance to the
goal.  That distance brought the ball
literally micro-inches from the goal line.

Punahou then lined up with quarterback Kimo Makaula under center, an
unusual formation for the Buffanblue who played out of the shotgun all game
long.  The call was to hand the ball off
to Te??o, a highly-recruited junior linebacker/runningback who is being sought
after by the likes of USC, UCLA, Penn
State
, and Notre Dame,
among other big name Division I schools.

??I just followed my fullback JJ Autele and that side of the line (Chris
Chun, Abe Markowitz, and Mark Hinkley) and the hole was there,? Te??o said.  With McKinley playing up close, hoping to
force a safety, Te??o broke off tackle and was also immediately in the
open-field.  With nothing but green grass
ahead of him, his only concern was whether anyone could catch up to him.  ??I kept looking back to see if I could slow
down,? he said.

Ironically, he couldn??t.  Te??o had
to turn on the afterburners at about the 50-yard line and then no Tiger could
catch him the rest of the way.  The play
officially covered 99-yards, but anyone who was there knew it was as close to
100-yards as you can get.

The longest run was one of three touchdowns scored by Te??o in a 56-18
Punahou romp.  He started the day with a
five-yard dash to paydirt, following a massive block by senior guard Abe
Markowitz at the goal line as Punahou jumped out to a 7-nothing lead on the
first offensive series.

His other touchdown was a 24 yard reception from junior quarterback
Cayman Shutter in the second quarter.  On
that play, Te??o was the safety valve receiver, but Shutter found him, and Te??o
outraced several Tiger defenders to get to the corner of the endzone.  ??I was more tired on that play (than the
99-yard run),? he said.

Te??o also made a huge play defensively when he swept in from his
linebacker position and tackled McKinley??s Sione at his own one yard line after
a high snap.  ??I??m just glad to be out
there again,? Te??o said.  This was the
talented junior??s first game back since suffering a season-ending foot injury
last year.

But he was hardly the only Punahou hero.
The Buffanblue rotated two quarterbacks and both produced huge
numbers.  Kimo Makaula, who played linebacker,
safety, and punter last year, started at quarterback Saturday afternoon and
completed 14 of 19 passes for 172 yards.
(He ??earned? the starting position by way of a coin-flip, as no starter
for Punahou has been decided upon as of yet.)
Makaula??s numbers were impressive, but not nearly as impressive as fellow
junior Cayman Shutter, who completed 9 of 10 passes for 249 yards and four
touchdowns.

Shutter??s completions included a 62-yarder to Kameron Steinhoff and a
63-yarder to Robbie Toma, both in the first half.

??They both played well.  They both
have great attributes out there,? Punahou Coach Kale Ane said.  ??Kaymen has a little more experience and
understands coverages.  Kimo is a little
more mobile.?

      Coach Ane laughed when reporters
mentioned that he might have a problem??a nice problem.  That is, two outstanding quarterbacks.

??We both get equal reps,? Shutter said.
??We had great pass protection.
Our job is to get (the receivers) the ball and it went well.?

??I felt really good.  It was a
good start,? Makaula said.

What really helped the Punahou passers was their outstanding receiving
corps.  Toma, especially, made some
acrobatic catches.

??I don??t know how I caught some of those out there,? Toma said afterwards.  ??It was really fun.?

Despite the lopsided final score, the game was

 competitive for quite
awhile.  McKinley??s Sione

 completed 14 of
28 passes for 233 yards.  He ran

 for one
touchdown and threw touchdown passes

to both of the Woodward brothers, Tavita
and

Tana.  Tavita ended the game with
five receptions

for 170 yards, including catches of 76 yards and

 60 yards.

All in all, it was a great start to the football season for both
teams.  Punahou showed that it should be
a contender for the ILH title, and McKinley showed off some outstanding
athletes, especially on the offensive side of the football.

But the game could be remembered for the longest run of all time.  Call it 99 yards with an asterisk.

The very next play was converted into another Rams score and a 12-0
deficit for Pac- Five going into halftime.

After a 12-minute intermission – coming out of the tunnel to start the second half was a brand new Wolfpack team led by Botelho.

The Rams took the opening kickoff and later in the drive was forced to
punt from deep in its territory. The Rams punt attempt sailed straight
into the sky and landed straight back to the stadium field turf and
after a big reverse bounce in the air, Botelho would cradle the
football in his hands as he stood in the end zone. Officials paused for
a few seconds and realized it was a touchdown.

A few plays later on the next Rams possession, Wolfpack linebacker Adam
Hom (two interceptions and a fumble recovery) picked off his second
pass of the game deep in the Rams territory. A couple of plays later
Jaime Rivera rushed in for the go ahead score and a 14-12 Pac-Five lead.

On the next Rams series Botelho would intercept another Rams pass and
raced into the endzone for his second touchdown of the game and a 21-12
lead for the Wolfpack.

Botelho finished with nine tackles, two touchdowns, three passes defended and one interception.

Not bad for the son of the current Pac-Five head coach (Kip Botelho)
and grandson of the former Pac-Five head coach (Don Botelho)

Rams will now move on to begin OIA Red West Division play next week.
The Wolfpack will visit Moanalua High School to play the Menehune next
week Saturday.
