4A No. 12 Ben Davis uses 13-0 start to run past host Noblesville, 59-43

By Craig Adkins
Contributing Writer

NOBLESVILLE â??? From
the opening tip Nov. 28, host Noblesville struggled to keep up with speedy Ben
Davis (4-0) at The Mill on November 28.

Thatâ??s because the Class 4A No. 12 Giants raced out to a
13-0 lead while displaying some great defense in a 59-43 victory. Noblesville
finally put its first points on the board with 5:07 left in the first quarter,
but the Millers would be doomed by 32 turnovers, including 20 in a disastrous
first half.

The Noblesville defense couldnâ??t stop Alexandria Bentley
for a second. The Giantsâ?? leading scorer poured in 26 points to lead all
scorers, while Amelia Vernon added 11.

The first quarter was all Ben Davis as the Giants quickly
jumped out to the 13-0 lead before the Millers scored on a 3-pointer from the
right wing by junior point guard Alyson Morris. Then the bottom fell out for
both teamsâ?? offenses as coaches Kurt Gassensmith (Noblesville) and Stan Benge
(Ben Davis) must have really stressed defense before the start of the second
quarter, when Ben Davis scored four of the periodâ??s six points on the way to a
24-10 halftime lead.

Noblesville (2-3), which did manage a draw in the
rebounding department at 22, tightened its game a bit in the second half as the
Millers were outscored only 35-33 during the final two quarters. That included
a final period of play that was the polar opposite of the second stanza as some
great 3-point shooting by Lindsey Gysin, Molly Elkins, and Marianne Harmas
allowed Noblesville to win the quarter, 22-21.

Lindsey Gysin and Shay Arvin led Noblesville with 14
points apiece.

4A No. 3 Hamilton SE survives late rally by 4A No. 10 Carmel in 56-45 victory

By Will Willems
Staff Intern

CARMEL â??? It was a good early season test Nov.
25 for Class 4A third-ranked Hamilton Southeastern when the Royals traveled to
face rival No. 10 Carmel in girls basketball action.

After
building a huge lead in the first half, Southeastern held off a ferocious
Greyhound rally to win the game, 56-45.

â??I thought
we played a very nice, all-around game, said Hamilton Southeastern coach Chris
Huppenthal. â??We got some production out of a lot of kids, we were able to go 11
deep on our bench, and [we] saw a lot of people do a lot of good things.

The Royals
(5-0) jumped out in the first quarter, dominating the Greyhounds on both ends
of the court to take a 15-4 lead. Junior Laura Cook led the early attack with
six points in the quarter.

â??It was
nice to get out to that lead â??? obviously, we needed it,â? Huppenthal said. â??When
these two teams get together, no one is going to run away.

â??These
teams have a nice little rivalry going, and we played hard tonight and got some
timely baskets when we needed it.

The pace
picked up considerably in the second quarter with Carmel (4-1) trying to claw its way back into
the game. The Greyhounds closed the half on a 6-0 run that made it 27-18 at the
half.

The second
half brought â??The Danielle Havel Showâ? as the Carmel junior forward was dominant throughout
the half. In the third period alone, she scored 11 of her teamâ??s 16 points to
help cut the deficit to just six at the quarterâ??s end.

Then with
6:26 left in the game, Havel (21 points) hit a
turnaround jumper to cut the lead to a mere bucket.

â??Danielle
played very well in the second half when we needed someone to step up, said Carmel coach Scott Bowen.
â??But we need her to be more consistent â??? we need that play in both halves.â?

After a
3-pointer by Cook, two Havel free throws cut the lead back to three points with
5:37 remaining. On the next three possessions, Carmel had three 3-point attempts that would
have tied the game, but none were able to find the bottom of the net.

â??We
started playing a little bit harder, [and] we were able to match their
intensity,â? Bowen said. â??For whatever reason, we came out sluggish in the first
half.

â??We let
missing shots affect our defense and, no matter what, if we do that weâ??re in
trouble.

The Royals
were led by sophomores Courtney Osborn and Paige Smith, who each hit key shots
and collected big rebounds down the stretch to withstand the rally. Both girls
finished in double figures as Osborn scored 13 points and Smith added 11.

â??I think
their experience from playing last year as freshmen has really helped them in
the early going this year,â? Huppenthal said. â??Those kids are two great players and
are important to what we are going to accomplish.

The two
teams will meet again Dec. 27 in the Hamilton County Tournament.

Preview: Class 3A

By Colin Altevogt
Girls Basketball Coordinator

Sports law
No. 1 states that good teams find a way to win. Fort Wayne Luers did just that
in many Class 3A games last year, taking care of business in less-than-fashionable
form in many games.

Last
season, the eventual state champion took care of ranked Fort Wayne Concordia
Lutheran in three different games, including a last-second victory in the
sectional final. Later, the Knights took out favorite South Bend St. Josephâ??s
and then easily disposed of Evansville Memorial in the state finals.

With
nearly everyone coming back, Luers is a heavy favorite to repeat its title.
Many teams are looking to dethrone the champs, including revenge-hungry, second-ranked
St. Josephâ??s.

NORTH
Benton Central
Coach:
Jeff Guenther
Last
seasonâ??s record: 22-4
Tournament:
Won Benton Central Sectional, lost in Twin Lakes Regional to South Bend St.
Josephâ??s, 67-48.

Projected
starters:
Unavailable

Outlook: Ranked
eighth heading into the season, Benton Central faces a tough road in the
tournament. The Bison should see South Bend St. Joeâ??s in the regional â??? if they
are able to get out of the sectional alive. That may not be such an easy task.
Last year, Benton Centralâ??s margin of victory in three sectional games was
three points.

Fort Wayne Luers
Coach: Teri
Rosinski
Last
seasonâ??s record: 24-4
Tournament:
Won Fort Wayne Dwenger Sectional, won Jay County Regional, won Elkhart Semistate, won Class 3A state
championship.

Projected
starters:
G Markee
Martin, junior
G Kelsey
Wyss, sophomore
F Megan
Pedro, sophomore
F Amber
Gotfried, junior
F Amanda
Pedro, junior

Coachâ??s
comments: â??We have a very athletic and talented group of players to work with. With
a year under their belts while competing at a very high level last year, they
have shown a remarkable ability to process a great deal of information while
retaining their ability to compete with great intensity. We are blessed with
competitive, high-caliber players who have the desire to improve their skills
daily.

Outlook: The
defending state champions from one of Indianaâ??s
most prestigious girls hoops program return all but one player from last yearâ??s
team. Point guard MarKee Martin, perhaps the most underrated player in the
state, leads the Knights. With Martin, sharp-shooting 2-guard Kelsey Wyss, and
tenacious forward Amanda Pedro, Luers has three stars around which to focus. The
lineup is young yet experienced, and the bench if deep. Expect to see Luers
ranked tops in the state for years to come.

NorthWood
Coach: Steve
Neff
Last
seasonâ??s record: 20-5
Tournament:
Won West Noble Sectional, lost in Jay County Regional final to Fort Wayne
Luers, 39-32.

Projected
starters:
Unavailable

Outlook:
The Panthers face a similar dilemma as Benton Central. NorthWood will probably face
No. 1 Luers in the regional and will be looking for a huge upset to continue
its dream.

Plymouth
Coach:
Dave Cox
Last
seasonâ??s record: 19-3
Tournament:
Lost in Knox Sectional final to South Bend St. Josephâ??s, 61-51.

Projected
starters: Unavailable

Outlook:
The Pilgrims face St. Joeâ??s in the sectional round and should be hoping to pull
off an upset that would help every 3A team in the state.

South Bend St. Josephâ??s
Coach:
Mike Megyese
Last
seasonâ??s record: 22-3
Tournament:
Won Knox Sectional, won Twin Lakes Regional, lost in Elkhart Semistate
to Fort Wayne Luers, 56-49.

Projected
starters:
Unavailable

Outlook:
The 2005 state champions, the Indians looked destined for a repeat last season
before being upset by Luers in the semistate. St.
Joeâ??s loses Melissa Lechlitner, one of last yearâ??s favorites for Miss
Basketball, but brings back Sydney Smallbone, a Tennessee-bound guard who could
succeed Lechlitner as the stateâ??s best guard. With a No. 2 ranking and a chance
for revenge in this yearâ??s semistate, St. Joeâ??s looks poised to make it two out
of a three. And that ainâ??t bad.

West Lafayette
Coach:
Craig Shaeffer
Last
seasonâ??s record: 13-9
Tournament:
Lost in Benton Sectional quarterfinal to Benton Central, 80-79.

Projected
starters: Unavailable

Outlook:
The Red Devils will be in a loaded sectional with Benton Central, Western, Frankfort, and
Maconaquah. If West Lafayette
is somehow able to survive, the road isnâ??t very easy from there as second-ranked
St. Joeâ??s will probably be waiting in the regional.

SOUTH
Coach: Kendall
Kreinhagen
Last seasonâ??s
record: 18-8
Tournament: Lost
in Lebanon Sectional final to Lebanon,
63-42.

Projected
starters:
PG Callie Curry,
junior
G Lauren Meadows,
sophomore
F Ivie Obeime,
junior
F Jessica Hand,
senior
C Taâ??Shia
Phillips, senior

Outlook: 6â??6â?
center Taâ??Shia Phillips leads Brebeuf on her quest for Miss Basketball. In
order to succeed, the other Braves must step up. Phillips will face constant
double- and triple-teams down low and will need help from the outside. Point
guard Callie Curry will be key, and the development of 6â??3â? freshman Brittany
Campbell will be interesting to see. A lineup of twin towers could make
defending the post even harder for the Bravesâ?? opponents.

Evansville Bosse
Coach:
Angie Oliver
Last
seasonâ??s record: 17-5
Tournament:
Lost in Evansville Memorial Sectional final to Evansville Memorial, 69-52.

Projected
starters:
Unavailable

Outlook: Bosse
has two big matchups this season against Memorial that will dictate its season.
The first takes place Dec. 7 at home, and the second should be a make-or-break
contest in the sectional.

Evansville Memorial
Coach:
Bruce Dockery
Last
seasonâ??s record: 23-5
Tournament:
Won Evansville Memorial Sectional, won Jasper Regional, won Jeffersonville Semistate,
lost in Class 3A state finals to Fort Wayne Luers, 65-54.

Projected
starters:
G Chrissy
Stieler, sophomore
G Danika
Malone, senior
F Vanessa
Seidl, sophomore
F Kari
Stieler, senior
C Chelsea
Falkenstein, junior

Coachâ??s
comments: â??
I am very excited about this team. They love to compete. I look
forward
to watching them grow each game.

Outlook: Losing star point guard Fahkara Malone to Purdue will
certainly hurt, but the Tigers return three of last yearâ??s starters. That
includes center Chelsea Falkenstein, who averaged 11 points and nine rebounds
per game last season. If Memorial is to return to the state finals, it will
need increased production from Falkenstein and a breakout season from someone
in the backcourt.

Indianapolis Chatard
Coach:
Kevin Sweeney
Last
seasonâ??s record: 19-4
Tournament:
Won Beech Grove Sectional, lost in Mt.
Vernon
(Fortville)
Regional semifinal to Rushville, 46-44.

Projected
starters:
Unavailable

Outlook: The
10th-ranked (preseason) Trojans should build confidence heading into the
tournament. Chatardâ??s light schedule pits the Trojans against Carmel and Brebeuf in January â??? thatâ??s about
it. A regional tournament that should include New Castle
and Lebanon
will be interesting.

Lebanon
Coach:
Tracey Hammel
Last
seasonâ??s record: 23-1
Tournament:
Won Lebanon Sectional, lost in Mt. Vernon (Fortville) Regional semifinal to New Castle, 45-42.

Projected
starters:
Unavailable

Outlook:
The only undefeated team heading into the tournament last year, the Tigers were
upset by New Castle
in a playoffs stacked with surprises. This season, Lebanon
ranks fourth in the preseason 3A poll, behind defending champion Luers,
perennial contender St. Joeâ??s, and New
Castle
.

New Castle
Coach:
Curt Bell
Last
seasonâ??s record: 19-5
Tournament:
Won Mt.
Vernon (Fortville) Sectional, lost in Mt. Vernon
(Fortville) Regional final to Rushville, 49-46.

Projected
starters:
G Corie
West, senior
G Madison
Qualkenbush, junior
G Mandy
Blake, senior
F Macey
Elyea sophomore
C Allison
Reece, senior

Outlook:
Last season, the Trojans handed top-ranked Lebanon its first â??? and only â??? loss
in the regional semifinal. With the bulk of its team coming back this season, New Castle should be
looking to build upon that success. Returning West and her 18.6 points per game
is huge.

And now,
my predictions!

North
semistate: Fort Wayne
Luers over South Bend St. Josephâ??s
South
semistate: New Castle
over Evansville Bosse
State
champion: Fort Wayne
Luers

Colin's column: In one corner, 3A champ Fort Wayne Luers – in the other corner, South Bend Washington – rumBBBBLLLLLE!

By Colin Altevogt
Girls Basketball Coordinator

The long
wait is finally over for me. After weeks of anticipation for the girls basketball
season to get under way, I was able to attend my first couple games this week.

On Nov.
14, I made the trek to Warren Central (home of the 1980 boys gymnastics state
champions) to see the Warriors take on Brebeuf and Miss Basketball favorite
Taâ??Shia Phillips. The game was highlighted by the worldâ??s best high school
announcer. The pop, however, costs two dollars!

Two days
later, I once again talked my Franklin
College roommate into
helping me keep stats as we traveled to see Class 4A second-ranked Lawrence
North host Indianapolis Arlington. The adequately excited crowd and
enthusiastic pep band gave a hyped atmosphere that epitomizes Indiana basketball. Too bad the game was
**** â??? nearly 50 combined turnovers and slightly better than 50 percent
shooting from the foul line.

Thus, Iâ??m
hoping for some redemption this week when I make the journey to South Bend Washington
to see two preseason No. 1s square off the day after Thanksgiving. I am still
of the belief that South Bend Washington and defending 3A champ Fort Wayne
Luers are the two best teams in the state. Someone should take a picture of
Luers point guard MarKee Martin defending Washington star Skylar Diggins and
blow it up into a poster to promote the return of non-class basketball.

Also on my
schedule for the week is a big 2A tilt between Heritage Christian and Harding that
takes place in Fort Wayne
on Saturday.

This
weekâ??s top games:

Tuesday:
Franklin
Central @ Columbus North: The Flashes head south in a battle of underrated 4A
teams.

Fishers @ Hamilton
Southeastern: The first of many contests between newly developed rivals.
Fishers spoiled coaching legend Jan Connerâ??s debut at Lafayette Jefferson a
couple weeks ago.

Wednesday:
Indianapolis
Chatard @ Indianapolis Cathedral: Naptownâ??s top two private schools do battle
on Thanksgiving Eve.

Friday:
Fort Wayne
Luers @ South Bend Washington: How can I convey the proper sentiments for this
game in less than 100 words? Let me just say that I am so excited that Iâ??m
having trouble typing this because I thnnkfjth ttheajf
lkdsjfakldsjglkjdsalkgjdsklgjdslkagjdasgds!!!!!!1

Saturday:
Franklin
Central @ Brebeuf: Phillips & Co. host Franklin Central in the Flashesâ??
second big game of the week.

Heritage
Christian @ Harding: This game would be a rematch of last yearâ??s 2A state
finals had it not been for Tiffany Fisherâ??s incredible performance for Westview
in the semistate.

Random game of last week:
Westfield 46, Noblesville 40

Shamrocks
down Hamilton County rival Noblesville in a battle of
schools that, according to HA.comâ??s girls cross country coordinator, will be
ranked first and second heading into next fallâ??s running season. Maggie
Bingham, Kristina Krasich, and Breanne Ehrman â??? three of two-time state champ Westfieldâ??s top four
runners â??? play ball in the winter.

Last weekâ??s upsets:
None
