Sloppy 4A No. 2 Lawrence North gets past Arlington, 64-46

By Colin Altevogt
Girls Basketball Coordinator

INDIANAPOLIS â??? Despite an off day from standout
shooting guard Azjah Bass and 22 total turnovers, Class 4A second-ranked Lawrence
North was able to capitalize on a fourth-quarter run to down visiting
Indianapolis Arlington, 64-46, in the house that Oden built.

Arlington hung tough for most of the game,
cutting the lead down to three with five minutes remaining in the game. But 25
turnovers and a horrendous night from the foul line (13 of 29) ultimately doomed
the Golden Knightsâ?? upset bid.

Though the
Knights gave possession away nine times in the first quarter, they found
themselves ahead, 15-13, in the second quarter after a quick jumper by
sophomore forward Sydney Mitchell. But Lawrence North responded by feeding the
ball to center Felisha Johnson for two easy buckets, and the Wildcats never
trailed again in their season opener.

At
halftime, the Wildcat advantage was 28-22, mainly due to Arlingtonâ??s 4-for-16 free throw debacle.

In the
third quarter, Arlingtonâ??s
free throw woes persisted as it become obvious that the Knights had no answer
inside for Johnson. The 6â??2â? junior scored 11 of her game-high 15 points in the
second half.

After an
easy two inside by Johnson and two quick baskets off turnovers, the â??Cats led
by 11 with 6:27 remaining in the game. The Knights, however, had one last
charge in them. Sophomore guard Lindsey Shepherd hit four straight from the
line, and Arlington
scored two buckets in transition to cap a quick 8-0 run.

On the
next possession, however, Arlington
center Yolanda Maxie fouled out, leaving the Knights with virtually no inside
presence. The â??Cats responded, closing out the contest with a 17-2 run while
keeping the Knights scoreless from the field in the gameâ??s final five minutes.

Bass
scored 15 points on 4-for-22 shooting. Wildcat point guard Erica Beeler chipped
in 14, while Mitchell led the Arlington
attack with 12 points. The loss drops previously unbeaten Arlington to 2-1.

Preview: Class 2A

By Colin Altevogt
Girls Basketball Coordinator

Last
season, Heritage Christian stormed through the tournament and seemed nearly
untouchable on its way to the Class 2A state championship under first-year
coach Rick Risinger. The Patriotsâ?? opponent in that game, Westview, had a very
different route to Conseco Fieldhouse, winning multiple games in the last
minute.

With both
teams returning their entire starting lineups, are we headed for a 2A title
game rematch?

NORTH
Harding
Coach: J.J.
Foster
Last
seasonâ??s record: 16-8
Tournament:
Won Bluffton Sectional, won South Adams Regional, lost in Elkhart Semistate
to Westview, 59-48.

Top
returning players:
G Rashida
Ray
G Zaquanna
Braden
F MyQueisha
Bratton
F Jasmine
Yarbrough

Outlook: Despite
a tumultuous season last year, the Hawks were one bad shooting day away from
playing for the state championship. Last year, Harding went through a coaching
change and the death of a teammate. Nevertheless, the Hawks upset Taylor in an emotional
regional championship and came back from a 20-point deficit to within one, but
could not seal the deal vs. Westview. With a bit more stability, the
seventh-ranked Hawks could make some noise. Potential regional matchups with Taylor and Manchester
will be tough road blocks, though, if Harding wants a semistate rematch against
Westview.

Heritage
Coach:
Jonathon Fuelling
Last
seasonâ??s record: 18-4
Tournament:
Lost in Bluffton Sectional quarterfinals to Woodlan, 42-39.

Top
returning players: Unavailable

Outlook: A
big upset by Woodlan in the opening round of last yearâ??s sectional tournament
prevented us from seeing a Harding-Heritage showdown. This year, that matchup
will probably happen twice â??? once in the regular season and another for the
sectional championship.

Manchester
Coach:
Mark Underwood
Last
seasonâ??s record: 21-3
Tournament:
Won Northfield Sectional, lost in South Adams Regional semifinal to Taylor, 42-41.

Top
returning players:
Unavailable

Outlook:
The Squires lost a one-point game to Taylor
last year. That disappointment should leave a bad taste in the mouths of a team
that returns most of last yearâ??s squad. Second-ranked Manchester will have a tough regional with
Harding and Taylor again this year.

North Montgomery
Coach:
Terry Bartell
Last
seasonâ??s record: 17-6
Tournament:
Won North Montgomery Sectional, lost in Rensselaer Regional to Westview, 60-59.

Top
returning players:
Unavailable

Outlook:
The Chargers were just one of a few teams to lose heartbreakingly close
tournament games to the eventual state runner-up. This season, North Montgomery
is ranked fifth and will get tough tests against Lafayette Central Catholic and
Sagamore Conference rival Lebanon.

Southwestern (Hanover)
Coach:
Donna Cheatham
Last
seasonâ??s record: 19-6
Tournament:
Won Lawrenceburg Sectional, lost in Batesville Regional final to Heritage
Christian, 56-37.

Top
returning players:
Unavailable

Outlook:
The 2002 state champ, Southwestern was blasted in last yearâ??s regional final by
eventual state champion Heritage Christian. If the Rebels are again to compete
for a state title, they must find a way to upset the stateâ??s top-ranked 2A
school in this yearâ??s regional.

Taylor
Coach:
Dennis Bentzler
Last
seasonâ??s record: 21-4
Tournament:
Won Oak Hill Sectional, lost in South Adams Regional final to Harding, 57-48.

Top
returning players:
Unavailable

Outlook: The
Titans were upset by a focused, determined Harding team in last yearâ??s regional
championship. Taylor
is already having a rough start to this season, losing its first two games.

Westview
Coach: Randy
Yoder
Last
seasonâ??s record: 24-4
Tournament:
Won LaVille Sectional, won Rensselaer Regional, won Elkhart Semistate,
lost in Class 2A state championship to Heritage Christian, 46-34.

Projected
starters:
G Michelle
Haney, senior
G Collete
Lambright, senior
F Cheri
Borkholder, senior
F Emily
Lamkin, senior
C Tiffany
Fisher, junior

Outlook: A
surprise runner-up in the 2A tournament last year, Westview returns its entire
starting lineup from last year. Junior center Tiffany Fisher, a potential All-Stater,
leads the Warriors. Fisher should see a heavy dose of double- and triple-teams.
If Westview is to return to Conseco again this year, Fisherâ??s teammates must be
ready to take some of the load. Depth could be the Achillesâ?? heel of this team.

SOUTH
Charlestown
Coach: Tony Hall
Last seasonâ??s
record: 18-8
Tournament: Won
Eastern (Pekin)
Sectional, lost in Forest Park Regional semifinal to South Spencer, 36-34.

Key returning
players:
LaTonya Lloyd
Katie Jackson
Jennifer Carlisle
Lindsey Davis

Coachâ??s comments:
â??We have a chance to be a good team by January.â?

Outlook: With Davis out until December
after ACL problems this summer and move-in Chrystal Smith sidelined until
January, the Pirates may have a slow start to the season. However, as Charlestown gets
healthier and gels as a team in January, watch out in the tournament.

Heritage Christian
Coach: Rick
Risinger
Last
seasonâ??s record: 25-3
Tournament:
Won Triton Central Sectional, won Batesville Regional, won Southport Semistate,
won Class 2A state championship

Projected
starters:
G Claire
Freeman, sophomore
G Emily
Anderson, sophomore
F Bre
Jones, senior
F Kayla
Scaggs, junior
F Kelly
Faris, sophomore

Coachâ??s
comments:

Outlook: The
top team in 2A all last season, Heritage Christian cruised through last yearâ??s
tournament. This season looks to be more of the same for the Patriots, who return
their entire starting lineup. Last year, Heritage Christian dominated with
three freshmen in the starting five. Itâ??s scary to think what this group â??? a
year older and a year more experienced â??? can do.

Southridge
Coach: Greg
Werner
Last
seasonâ??s record: 17-4
Tournament:
Lost in Tell City Sectional quarterfinals to Forest Park, 43-42 (OT).

Projected
starters:
G Jill
Underhill, senior
G Jill
Matthews, senior
F Megan
Weber, senior
F Abby
Steckler, senior
C Courtney
Souders, senior

Coachâ??s
comments: â??We return about 98 percent of our offense from last year. We play a
tough schedule that should prepare us for the end-of-season tournament. The
girls are talented athletes and can have a lot of success if they develop
mental toughness and learn to understand the game in special situations.

Outlook: With
so much returning from last season, it is hard to imagine the Raiders not
bouncing back from last yearâ??s tough upset in the sectional. A starting five of
all seniors should help give Southridge some urgency to perform well this year.
Steckler scored 15.3 points a game a year ago and should provide a big presence
in the post.

And now,
my predictions!

North semistate:
Westview over Manchester
South
semistate: Heritage Christian over Southridge
State
champion: Heritage Christian

Phillips' foul trouble dooms 3A No. 9 Brebeuf in 50-40 loss at Warren Central

By Colin Altevogt
Girls Basketball Coordinator

INDIANAPOLIS â??? Warren Central drew two early
fouls on Brebeufâ??s Taâ??Shia Phillips and the senior played just over five
minutes in the first half Nov. 14 as the host Warriors went on to post a 50-40
victory.

With Class
4A Warren
leading 7-4, Phillips went to the bench at the 2:35 mark of the first quarter.
The 6â??6â? center did not return for the rest of the half, leaving the 3A ninth-ranked
Braves with limited inside presence.

When
Brebeuf junior point guard Callie Curry left the game with 5:40 left in the
second quarter, the Braves had trouble breaking Warrenâ??s full-court, man-to-man
defense. Subsequently, the Warriors saw their three-point margin stretch to 13
before intermission.

At
halftime, Phillips had grabbed two rebounds but had yet to attempt a single
shot while sitting the majority of the half. And with their star on the bench,
the Braves did themselves no favors by turning the ball over 14 times in the
first two quarters alone.

Warren
guard Keona Bruen hit a 3-pointer to put the Warriors up 16 with just under
five minutes left in the third period before the Braves finally responded. Phillips
converted layups on two possessions in the midst of being triple-teamed, hit a
tough right-handed hook shot over two Warriors, and put back a miss by Paige
Thomas with a defender all over her for a three-point play the old-fashioned
way.

Phillipsâ??
13 points and four boards in the third quarter helped to slice the deficit into
single digits at 40-33 heading into the final quarter. The Braves run wasnâ??t
finished just yet, either.

In the
first minute of the fourth quarter, Phillips authoritatively grabbed an errant
three, immediately attracted a double-team and quickly dished to open teammate
Brittany Campbell for an easy two. Another minute later, guard Tiffany Byrd
knocked down a three, and the once-seemingly insurmountable margin had dwindled
to a basket.

That was
the end of the line, though. Warren
guard Anyae Coffer answered, nailing three jump shots in two minutes. Teammate
Lauren Shepherd scored on a fast break as the Warriors extended the two-point
lead back to 11.

Brebeuf
never recovered.

After
falling 52-43 at defending 3A state champion Fort Wayne Luers Nov. 11, the
Braves now stand 0-2. Warren Central, a 62-60 loser to Noblesville on Saturday,
improves to 1-1.

Coffer led
all scorers with 21 points while Shepherd chipped in 13 more, 11 of those
coming on a 14-4 Warrior run to end the first half.

Despite
facing double- and triple-teams all night, Phillips recorded a double-double
with 13 points and 12 rebounds. The Miss Basketball candidate was a perfect 6
of 6 from the field.

Colin's column: Week 1 girls hoops and another Peyton Manning commercial

By Colin Altevogt

Girls Basketball Coordinator

I havenâ??t
been this excited since they came out with lemonade-flavored Gatorade and
Peyton Manning was in the commercial.

When
HA.com decided to expand its girls basketball coverage, I threw my name out as
a candidate for the coordinator position. Last season, I was fortunate enough
to live in the same city as an eventual state champion (Fort Wayne Luers), so I
covered the Elkhart
Semistate
as well as the Class
3A and 4A state finals.

I knew
being the coordinator would be a lot of work, but I couldnâ??t pass up the
opportunity. I love basketball.

Fifty-some
emails (and Iâ??m only halfway done) to coaches and ADs later, Iâ??m still hyped up about the whole thing.
Iâ??m ready to watch the season develop and help give another girls sport the
equal coverage it deserves. So here we go â?¦

This
weekâ??s top games:

Tuesday
Edgewood @
Bloomfield:
Class A second-ranked Bloomfield
gets a taste of big-school action in its own gym.

Evansville
Bosse @ Castle: Defending 4A champs host down-the-road rival Bosse.

Thursday
Indianapolis
Arlington @ Lawrence North: Season opener for the most intriguing team in the
state. LN went 12-12 a year ago and brings back only three starters, yet they
are ranked second in the state in 4A. Iâ??m looking forward to seeing why very
soon.

Friday
Jimtown @
Argos: Class Aâ??s No. 1 team hosts a dangerous Jimtown squad that took 2A state
runner-up Westview down to the horn in last yearâ??s sectional final.

Lafayette
Central Catholic @ McCutcheon: Defending Class A state champ takes on 4A
McCutcheon in Lafayette J&C Hoops Classic semifinal.

South Bend Washington @ South Bend St. Josephâ??s: Part of
being the consensus No. 1 team in the state to start the season is that
everyone wants a piece of the action. Eight days after being upset by Fort
Wayne South, 4A now-No. 4 Washington
takes on 3A No. 2 St. Joeâ??s. Also, Iâ??m just as excited for Fort Wayne Luers to
visit SB Washington (the two best teams in the state, in my opinion) the day
after Thanksgiving as I am for Thanksgiving itself.

Saturday
Bedford
North Lawrence @ Jeffersonville: Dangerous BNL team took Castle into overtime
last week. How will both teams respond after bouncing back from Friday games?

Random game of last week
Shelbyville
102, Yorktown 15

I donâ??t
know any of the specifics of this game, and I would like to be informed. However,
102 points is over three a minute, meaning Shelbyville had to push the pace
most of the game. Shouldnâ??t a team back off a little bit in the name of
sportsmanship when theyâ??ve build, say, a 50-point lead?

Last weekâ??s upsets
4A No. 11 Fort Wayne South 63, 4A No. 1 South
Bend
Washington
58
2A North Miami 64, 2A No. 5 Taylor 54
2A No. 6 North
Montgomery 57, A No. 5 Attica 48

OK, so
that last one is technically just barely an upset â??? but Purdue-bound Brittany
Rayburn can no longer dream of a prefect junior season.

Southern Indiana Tip-Off: New Washington nearly knocks off top-ranked South Central

By Matthew Cress
Jeffersonville Evening News

NEW
WASHINGTON
â??? At
times, it looked more like professional wrestling at the Louisville Gardens
than girls high school basketball. The atmosphere felt more like the second
game of a sectional than the second round of the Southern Indiana Tip-Off
Tournament.

But
whatever the Nov. 7 game between New Washington and Class A No. 1 South Central
(Elizabeth) was, it had to be called a classic. The Rebels (2-0) got 37 points
from Brittany Schoen to help overcome a 12-point deficit in handing New
Washington a 55-54 defeat in the second night of pool play of the preseason
tournament.

New
Washington
(1-1) had a final chance to win, getting the ball and an opportunity to set up
a play on its end of the court with 23.1 seconds to go.

But
the Rebels switched to a zone defense and the Mustangs failed to get an open
look, settling for a long shot from center Jillian Charlet. South Central grabbed
the rebound, but the ball was batted to New
Wash
â??s Jenna Sexton, whose
desperation heave hit the underside of the rim.

â??They
surprised us (the coaches) and they surprised the team, said Mustang coach
Terry White, who had made his re-debut as New Wash coach after a five-year absence in a 56-43 win over Clarksville Monday night. â??We
werenâ??t as patient in breaking that down as we could have been.

â??At
least the fans got their moneyâ??s worth.â?

Those
fans had no reason to complain in a game that saw three ties and four lead
changes in a last quarter that saw Schoen lead the Rebels back after they
trailed a majority of the second half.

The
junior guard, who last year helped the Rebels advance to the Class A state
championship game, hit her third 3-pointer after New Wash had
claimed a 49-45 lead. Schoen then tied the game at 50 on a driving layup before
giving South Central its first lead of the fourth quarter on another trey.

â??A
three is big whenever you hit it,â? White said. â??We just didnâ??t recognize their
shooters and mentally didnâ??t recognize her.â?

Much
of the third quarter became a scoring duel between Schoen and New Washâ??s
Callie Burgin, who had her best game as a Mustang by scoring 25 points and
pulling down six rebounds.

With
the score knotted at halftime, Burgin scored five of the Mustangsâ?? seven points
in the third quarter, spinning for a basket that put New Wash
ahead, 43-39. Later, she passed inside to Charlet for a basket that put New Wash
in front, 52-50.

Charlet,
who had 14 points and 15 rebounds in the season opener with Clarksville, was less effective most of the
evening. The 6-foot center was 2 of 8 from the floor, finishing with 10 points
and 13 rebounds.

â??We
need to make her (Charlet) a threat off the dribble,â? White said. â??I think itâ??s
just a case of her trying to understand what we want from her as opposed to
what we wanted in the past.

Early
on, Charlet was the spark plug as New
Wash
ran out to an 8-2 lead,
drawing double teams and passing to Burgin for six quick points. Point guard
Kaelin Tuell hit a jumper to open the second quarter, then passed to Burgin for
a layup that gave the Mustangs their largest lead at 19-7.

But
Schoen, who seemed to be bothered early by a very loud New Washington crowd,
hit one of her three 3-pointers on the Rebelsâ?? next possession, then went on to
deliver eight more points over the next five minutes to pull South Central into
a 31-31 tie at the half.

â??We
want to bring excitement back to New Washington basketball,â? White said. â??We
want to generate spirit around our athletic teams, and I feel like we let some
fans down.

â??This
is a setback because it could have been big for helping our confidence. Now the
coaches need to make sure that we donâ??t take strides backward.â?

After
a 12-point effort against Clarksville
on Monday, Tuell finished with four points and four assists.

Candice
Cartright finished with nine points for South Central, while Kayla Orwick led
the Rebels with six rebounds.

Both
teams continue tournament play Nov. 10 as New Washington will host Paoli and
South Central will entertain Clarksville.
The championship will be held Saturday at Charlestown.

VIDEO: Girls basketball coach profile: Lafayette Jeff's Jan Conner

Jan Conner,
the new coach of the Lafayette Jefferson girls basketball team, returns to
coaching this year after a five-year hiatus. In 23 years of coaching in Indiana, Conner has won 85 percent of her games,
including two state championships at Martinsville.

Video Coordinator Eric Eaton and Videographer Jeff â??Sweet Louâ? Luzadder recently
had the pleasure of visiting with the coaching legend. During the conversation,
Conner discusses her decision to return to coaching as well as her Nov. 24 return
home to Benton Central when the Bison host the Bronchos. Conner, who attended
Benton Central and coached the Bison to a state runner-up finish in 1989,
expects an incredible atmosphere for that game.
