Pedro’s big first quarter helps 3A No. 1 Luers clean up on Lima Bath (Ohio) in cross-state showdown

By Colin Altevogt

Girls Basketball Coordinator

FORT WAYNE â?? On the shortest day of the year, 3A No. 1 Fort Wayne Luers made sure Lima Bath (Ohio) had a long night. Luers defeated Bath, 58-45, Dec. 21 in the two schoolsâ?? annual border clash.

The top-ranked
Knights opened up a 12 point lead, 23-11, after a lights-out first
quarter in which Luers shot 10 of 17 from the field
. Sophomore swing player Megan Pedro put up an astounding 12 of those 23 points in the opening period.

Bath
employed afull-court press for much of the game but found it easily
broken by the quick Knights. The Wildkittensâ?? early woes were
compounded by their 3-of-12 shooting in the first quarter.

The Knights’ offensive production slowed down significantly in the second quarter. Bath
held Luers scoreless for the first three minutes until sophomore Mary
Hathaway nailed a three from the left wing to end the drought.

At halftime, the Knights held a comfortable 30-21 lead.

Luersâ??
guard Kelsey Wyss scored on a drive, her first points of the game, to
start off the second half. The Knights’ lead never dipped below double
digits the rest of the contest.

After
a 20-10 third period, Luers led by 19 heading into the final quarter.
The Wildkittens cut the deficit to a respectable margin in the last
five minutes but never mounted a serious challenge.

Pedro
led all scorers with 15 points after getting some serious defensive
attention in the last three quarters. Wyss added another 10 for the
Knights. Sophomore Rachel Mauk scored 14 for
Bath, while sister Stefanie chipped in 13.

Up next for Luers (10-1) is a Summit Conference winter tournament, an event the Knights have won the past three years.

Pedroâ??s barrage

Here is how Megan Pedro scored all of her 12 first-quarter points:

6:10 â??? 10-foot jumper (2)

5:47 â??? Layup off adrive (4)

5:14 â??? Another layup off adrive (6)

2:20 â??? Fast-break layup and one (9)

1:38 â??? Basket down low and one (12)

Colin column: Proposed River rivalry and a look at the unbeatens

By Colin Altevogt
Girls Basketball Coordinator

With
winter break tournaments just a week away,
Indiana now has 15 remaining
undefeated teams. Yes, I realize that perfect season talk is totally
inappropriate considering that we have yet to reach the halfway point. And, no,
I donâ??t care.

Going
with my wildly unreliable predictions, I do not foresee any 2A, 3A or 4A teams
going undefeated for one simple reason. The best teams in these classes have
already lost. 2A Heritage Christian lost to Lexington Catholic in
Kentucky (although an
undefeated season against
Indiana teams is still an
unlikely option). 3A Fort Wayne Luers was beaten by
South Bend Washington and 4A South Bend Washington was upset by Fort
Wayne South.

However,
the single A schools are what intrigue me the most.
Argos and Bloomfield, who
are the top single A teams in my opinion, both sport 10-0 records. The
schedules for each team from here could be very conducive to entering a perfect
regular season.

Argos must survive a couple
tough match-ups and a Bi-County tournament.
Bloomfield has a few games on its
slate against 3A and 4A schools, including a date with 10-1
Owen Valley, whose lone loss came
against 12-0 Terre Haute South.

However,
it is conceivable that
Argos, a team from the
northern semistate, and Bloomfield, a team from the southern semistate, could
enter the tournament with unblemished records. Not since the inception of the
class system in 1998 has a single A team had a perfect season.

Could
this yearâ??s small school state championship be a battle of unbeatens?

This
weekâ??s top games:

Monday:
Austin @ Seymour: Red-hot Austin has its biggest test of the year thus far as the take on 4A and
single-loss
Seymour.

Tuesday:
Hamilton Southeastern @ Warren
Central: As if the Warriors schedule couldnâ??t have gotten any tougher,
Warren must now play host to
top-ranked and undefeated Southeastern.

South Bend Washington @ Elkhart Memorial:
Memorial attempts to carry its momentum from six straight wins into a fight
with heavyweight
Washington.

Wednesday:
Lebanon @ Lawrence North:
Tigers take their six-game win streak to the House That Oden Built to face off
against Azjah Bass at the Wildcats.

Thursday:
Columbus
North @ Columbus East: 8-1 Bulldogs go into enemy territory to take on 6-2 Olympians
in big rivalry match-up.

Lima
Bath (
Ohio) @ Fort Wayne Luers:
Lima Bath was the last team to beat the Knights last year.  How will they
fare after crossing the border this time around?

Friday:
Anderson @ Indianapolis Arlington: Undefeated Anderson
travels into the heart of
Nap Town to challenge dangerous
Arlington team.

Fort
Wayne Canterbury @ Indianapolis Chatard: Single A powerhouse Cavaliers play
Chatard in match-up of private schools from the stateâ??s two biggest cities.

Shelbyville
@ Whiteland: Fresh off disappointment against No. 1 HSE, Golden Bears attempt
to take frustrations out on Whiteland.

Saturday:
Kokomo @ New Castle: Huge North Central
Conference game two days before Christmas at the worldâ??s best gymnasium. I love
this game.

Random game of last week:
Elwood
55,
Westfield 50 (3OT)
Yes,
this is the second time Iâ??ve featured
Westfield in the supposedly
â??randomâ? game of the week. However, Iâ??m intrigued by the fact that Elwood
outlasted the Shamrocks, a team whose line-up is stacked with all-state
distance runners.

Random game of last
week 2:
Muncie Burris 66, Blue River 65 (OT)
Exciting
game by two smaller schools. Also, in the state of
Indiana, we have a school
named
Blue River and a school named White River Valley. I donâ??t care how far
apart these two are, I demand that they play an annual game so we can crown a
River champion.

Last weekâ??s upsets:
NorthWood
51,
Plymouth 28.
Crawford County 37, Southridge 32.

Unbeaten watch (Selected teams only):
Terre Haute South (4A): 12-0
Dangerous upcoming game: Dec. 22 vs.
Ben Davis
Anderson (4A): 11-0
            Dangerous
upcoming games: Dec. 22 @
Indianapolis
        Arlington, Dec. 30 @ Ben

Jimtown
Hamilton Southeastern (4A):
10-0
Dangerous upcoming game: Dec. 27 vs.

Crawford County (2A): 10-0
Dangerous upcoming game: Dec. 21 @ Park Forest
New Castle (3A): 8-0
            Dangerous upcoming

Rankings: No changes at top of pre-Christmas coaches' polls

The big
leaper in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA) seventh
weekly girls basketball polls is Crawford
County, which moves up four
spots from seventh to third in Class 2A. Rising three slots in the 3A poll,
meanwhile, are NorthWood (seventh to fourth) and Indianapolis Chatard (ninth to
sixth).

There was
no significant movement elsewhere, including at the top of each class as 4A
Hamilton Southeastern, 3A Fort Wayne Luers, 2A Heritage Christian, and 1A Argos stayed put. Teams
are listed by current ranking followed by school, number of first-place votes (if
applicable), record, and vote total.

INDIANAPOLIS CITY: 2A defending state champ Heritage Christian to face 3A No. 9 Chatard in finals

By Will Willems
Staff Intern

INDIANAPOLIS â??? The brackets held form Dec. 14 in
the Indianapolis City Tournament semifinals. There were just different routes taken
to get to the championship.

Class 2A
top-ranked Heritage Christian, the No. 1 seed, steamrolled No. 5 seed Cathedral
72-31 in the first semifinal. That preceded second-seeded 3A No. 9 Indianapolis
Chatardâ??s 55-48 victory over No. 3 seed Indianapolis Arlington in a game much
closer than those seven points would indicate.

Speed was
the key for Heritage Christian from the very beginning of the opening game. The
Eaglesâ?? fast tempo was too much for the Fighting Irish as the score was 9-0
before the blink of an eye.

After
Julie Sylvester hit a 3-pointer to get Cathedral on the board, Heritage
Christian roared right back by scoring 11 of the next 12 points. The Eagles opened
up a 20-4 lead on a basket by Emily Anderson.

â??We had a
really good start,â? said Heritage Christian coach Rick Risinger. â??The press
helped us out a lot, and we were able to get up on them a little bit.

Trailing
24-6 after the first quarter, Cathedral was able to solve the Eaglesâ?? press enough
to cut the deficit to a dozen at 27-15 midway through the second. Risinger
called a timeout, and his regrouped team went on a 6-2 run to end the half.

â??We had
some rotations in there, and we lost sight of what we had to do defensively,
Risinger said. â??I just wanted to get back into defense â??? stay down and stay
focused â??? and the girls did a good job of responding to that.â?

The
defensive pressure was evident at the start of the second half as the Eaglesâ??
attack was relentless.

Cathedral
had no answers to the full-court press, this time scoring only five points in
the quarter. Heritage Christian tallied 22, mostly off fast-break layups after
forcing 10 Irish turnovers in the period.

â??We put a
little pressure on them, and that helped our transition game, Risinger said.
â??The press was able to let us do what we wanted to do.â?

The final
quarter was just a formality as the HC bench players cleaned up the victory.

The Eagles
were led by Kelly Faris, who had 18 points and seven rebounds. The sophomore
sensation was a factor on both ends, drawing two charges and registering three
emphatic blocks on defense. She also had a few remarkably athletic steals.

â??Sheâ??s an
excellent player,â? Risinger said. â??She is going to be a dominating performer on
both the high school and collegiate levels. She has talent all over the floor
and brings the whole program up with her.

Courtney
Turner added 13 points and six rebounds for the Eagles.

Cathedral
was led by Sylvester with 10 points.

Fans were
treated to a completely different style of basketball in the second contest as a
foul-plagued game was won by Chatard.

â??It was
tough game,â? said Chatard coach Kevin Sweeney. â??Some of the breaks were going
against us shooting, but we pulled it together and got the â??Wâ??.â?

Foul
troubles and injuries plagued the short-handed Golden Knights, who were only
playing with eight girls to start.

â??Weâ??re
young, and that showed in crucial spots tonight,â? said Arlington coach Stephanie Keller. â??Then we
just had crucial spots when we needed more players.

The first
quarter featured back-and-forth action that seemed to signal a shootout.

Chatard
moved out to a five-point lead on a jumper by Ellen Alerding. But Arlington came right
back, taking a two-point lead at 16-14 when Lindsey Shepard made a layup right
before the buzzer.

The
Trojans came out firing on all cylinders in the second quarter. They were able
to reclaim the lead at 21-20 on a 3-pointer by Alerding, then withheld another
rally from Arlington
to take a 35-32 lead at the half.

Arlington won the defensive struggle that
was the third quarter. After Chatard standout forward Kelly Gardner made a
layup to give the Trojans a five-point lead, Arlington bounced back to hold
Chatard to just four points in the final seven minutes of the period.

Arlington ended on a 10-4 run to take the
42-41 lead into the fourth.

Any
thoughts of a Chatard comeback looked to be thwarted when Gardner went down with an injury at the 6:58 mark
and the Trojans down three. But Gardnerâ??s
younger sister, Megan, stepped up the pressure and helped lead a Chatard
defense that kept Arlington
without a basket over the final seven minutes.

The Golden
Knights, in fact, couldnâ??t even score until there were 30 seconds left. Despite
decent chances to hang in the game, Arlington
continued to take ill-advised 3-pointers and lost its composure.

â??It hurt
when Kelly got hurt because sheâ??s such a good person and sheâ??s been through
this before,â? Sweeney said. â??Megan was a little emotional when her sister went
down, but we pulled her together and she stepped it up big time.

Kelly Gardner
re-entered the contest and provided an immediate boost to her team, drawing two
charges and scoring six points in the final minutes to preserve the victory.

Kelly Gardner
led the way with 15 points on the night, while her sister added 10 points and
eight rebounds.

Next up
Dec. 18 is the City championship featuring No. 2 seed Chatard against No. 1
seed Heritage Christian.

â??They are
a fantastic team at any level, have an outstanding player in Kelly Faris, and
itâ??s going to be a good game,â? Sweeney said. â??We like to play a similar
up-tempo style of play, and hopefully we can knock down a few more shots.

Colin column: Hall of Fame Classic shaping up to be Game of the Year II

By Colin Altevogt
Girls Basketball Coordinator

My personal, unpublished power poll has changed. At the seasonâ??s beginning, I had South Bend Washington
occupying the top spot with Fort Wayne Luers not too far behind. This
set up a dream match-up the day after Thanksgiving between the two.

Not exactly the spectacle I had imagined, that game has come and gone. Despite an early season loss to Fort Wayne South, Washington is still my number one. Though still in my Top 10, Luers has stumbled.

My new No. 2 team is not one of the 21 undefeated teams left in Indiana.
In fact, their lone loss may be the reason I regard them so highly.
Heritage Christian last Saturday lost a heartbreaking overtime loss tonationally ranked Lexington Catholic.

Yes, the Eagles are only 2A. Yes, they are a very young team. But could this be the best Indiana has to offer? We will find out Dec. 28 at New Castle when Heritage Christian takes on South Bend Washington in the Game of the Year II.

This weekâ??s top games:

Tuesday:

Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran @ Heritage: Underrated Concordia team takes on 2A Heritage in battle of single-loss schools.

Fort Wayne Elmhurst @ Fort Wayne Canterbury: Surprising Elmhurst looks for a way to slow down Megan King and upset the single A powerhouse Cavaliers.

Huntington North @ Fort Wayne Luers: Fresh off big conference wins, Huntington aims to grab some respect with bouncing of 3A top-ranked Luers.

Thursday:

Lawrence North @ Warren Central: Wildcats hope to capitalize on Marion County tournament championship into big conference win at Warren.

NorthWood
@ Jimtown: NorthWood looks to rebound from conference loss to Elkhart
Memorial by handing the Jimmies their first loss of the season.

Friday:

Fort
Wayne Luers @ Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran: If there was an channel
that played historically great games of Indiana girls high school
basketball a la ESPN Classic, the sectional final tilt between these
two teams would be shown once a week. I would see to it. This is the
first rematch since Luers downed the Cadets and went on to win the 3A
state title. Iâ??ll be in the Cage at Concordia to check it out. I love
this game.

North Central (Indianapolis) @ Carmel: The Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference race this season will be as entertaining as any other in the state. Letâ??s get it on.

Saturday:

Bloomington
North @ Bloomington South: Could anything be sweeter for South than
beating rival North for the Cougarâ??s first loss of the year?

Hamilton
Southeastern @ Shelbyville: Unbeaten and top-ranked Royals hit the road
to play a Golden Bear team whose two losses have come by a combined
five points. The upset special.

Plymouth @ NorthWood: Huge game that may decide North Lakes Conference crown.

Random game of last week:

Terre Haute South 71, Lafayette Jefferson 67

Itâ??s another close-but-no-cigar game for Jeff, which played two unbeaten 4A teams (Avon and South) tough in the span of five days. The victory takes the Braves halfway through the season undefeated at 11-0.

Donâ??t start the comparisons to the â??72 Dolphins or â??76 Hoosiers just yet, though. South has to go through the gauntlet in the
MIC, a schedule that includes Ben Davis, Carmel, Center Grove, Lawrence North, and Warren Central before the tournament.

Last weekâ??s upsets:

Southwestern (Hanover) 87, Columbus North 69

Elkhart Memorial 42, NorthWood 39

Evansville Bosse 67, Evansville Memorial 29

Crawfordsville 66, West Lafayette 53

Unbeaten watch:

Coming very soon.

Preview: Class 4A

By Colin Altevogt
Girls Basketball Coordinator

Indianaâ??s largest class appears to be slightly South-heavy, but South Bend Washington
would seem to be the favorite when we head into postseason play. The Panthers
should be able to gain their revenge in a semistate showdown with Fort Wayne
South, whereas the South could come down to a battle between early unbeatens Jeffersonville and Avon â???
if the Orioles can get past current No. 1 Hamilton Southeastern.

NORTH

Anderson
Coach: Chad
Wetz
Last
seasonâ??s record: 17-8
Tournament:
Won Anderson Sectional, lost in Huntington North Regional semifinal to
Huntington North, 77-57.

Key
returning players:
Unavailable

Outlook:
Still unbeaten, the Indians are in a loaded North Central Conference that
includes New Castle, Huntington North and Kokomo. After running
through the NCC gauntlet, the Tribe should be battle-tested and ready for a
tournament run.

Fort Wayne South
Coach:
Andy Rang
Last
seasonâ??s record: 24-4
Tournament:
Lost in Huntington North Sectional final to Huntington North, 60-54.

Key
returners:
G
Shaâ??la Jackson
G
Marceya Mingo
G
Zaquanna Braden
C
Demetria Eley

Outlook:
One of the most talented teams in the state, South has finally started to gel
as a team. Victims of a sectional upset the past two years by Huntington North,
the Archers are now ready for a deep run. A little senior urgency from Jackson
and Mingo will be huge for South.

Huntington North
Coach:
Don Burton
Last
seasonâ??s record: 17-7
Tournament:
Won Huntington North Sectional, lost in Huntington North Regional final to Kokomo, 38-35.

Key
returners:
Unavailable

Outlook:
The Vikings have one of the stateâ??s toughest schedules. Not only does Huntington have to play NCC rivals Anderson, Kokomo and New
Castle
, but the Vikings also have annual games against
Fort Wayne Luers and Fort Wayne South, two state championship contenders in
their own right. A sectional date against South should be intriguing. The
Vikings have ended the Archers season the past two years in the final.

South Bend Washington
Coach: Marilyn
Coddens
Last
seasonâ??s record: 24-2
Tournament:
Won South Bend Riley Sectional, won Valparaiso Regional, won Plymouth Semistate,
lost in Class 4A state championship to Castle, 83-72.

Projected
starters:
PG Emily
Phillips, junior
G Skylar Diggins,
sophomore
G Sherice
White, senior
F Ashley
Varner, senior
C Katie
Boocher, senior

Outlook: The
Panthers only loss to a team from Indiana
took place in last yearâ??s state finals when they lost to explosive offensive
attack of Castle. Washington
brings back its entire starting lineup, including the best player in the class
of â??09, Skylar Diggins. With everyone back, last yearâ??s number one team for
most of the season is a heavy favorite to take care of the business in the game
they werenâ??t able to last year. The Panthers should be tried and tested heading
into the tournament after going through a gauntlet schedule.

SOUTH
Avon
Coach:
Stephen Drabyn
Last
seasonâ??s record: 11-11
Tournament:
Lost in Indianapolis Northwest Sectional quarterfinal to Pike 62-45.

Key
returning players:
G Hillary
Cheek, senior
G Stephanie
Thomas, senior
F Brooklyn
Morrow, senior
F Kaley
May, junior
C Katie
Griffin, sophomore

Outlook:
The Oriolesâ?? roster is loaded with great athletes, including three Division I
headed girls. This is one of the most dangerous teams in the state. With an
easier schedule, we could be headed for a battle of unbeatens with Hamilton
Southeastern on the last game of the regular season Feb. 2. Griffin is one of the stateâ??s up-and-comers.
She already holds the school record in blocks after one season of high school
ball.

Ben Davis
Coach:
Stan Benge
Last
seasonâ??s record: 9-12
Tournament:
Lost in Indianapolis Northwest Sectional quarterfinal to Avon,
66-63.

Projected
starters:
G Alex
Bentley, sophomore
G Amelia
Vernon, senior
F Deâ??Airra
Goss, sophomore
F Silvia
Massey, senior
F Vivian
Homcolmb, freshman

Outlook:
The Giants are a team full of talent, including one of the stateâ??s top young
stars in sophomore Alex Bentley. With a win over Lawrence North, BD has a great
start at making a run for the Metropolitan Conference crown

Hamilton Southeastern
Coach:
Chris Huppenthal
Last
seasonâ??s record: 22-4
Tournament:
Won Noblesville Sectional, won Southport Regional, lost in Jeffersonville Semistate
to Castle, 43-36.

Key
returning players:
G Courtney
Osborn, sophomore
F Michelle
Harrison, senior
F Paige
Smith, sophomore

Outlook:
Currently the stateâ??s top-ranked team, the Royals are undefeated. A young team,
Southeastern was just one game away from playing in last yearâ??s state
championship before being beaten by eventual state champ Castle. HSE plays in
the slightly less rigorous Hoosier Crossroads Conference and could very
possibly head into the tournament unbeaten if they are able to down Avon.

Jeffersonville
Coach: Chad Gilbert
Last
seasonâ??s record: 22-2
Tournament:
Won Jeffersonville Sectional, lost in Bedford North Lawrence Regional semifinal
to Castle, 61-32.

Key
returning players:
Unavailable

Outlook:
Previously the top-ranked team in the state, the Red Devils play a relatively
easy schedule down south. Jeffâ??s main task this year is rebounding from last
yearâ??s disappointments. Last year, the Devils entered the postseason ranked
second in the state and the favorites to advance to the state finals but were
summarily destroyed by Castle in the regional.

Lawrence North
Coach:
Jodie Whitaker
Last
seasonâ??s record: 12-12
Tournament:
Won Warren Central Sectional, lost in Southport Regional final to Hamilton
Southeastern, 52-51.

Projected
starters:
PG Erica
Beeler, sophomore
G Azjah
Bass, senior
G Brittany
Archer, junior
F Daress
McClung, sophomore
F Felisha
Johnson, junior

Outlook: A
guard-dominant team, the Wildcats have two greats ones in the All-Stater Bass
and the sophomore Beeler. Johnsonâ??s presence down low will be huge. The â??Cats
are a good perimeter team so if the shots arenâ??t fallingâ??or if Johnson gets in
fall troubleâ??they could be in trouble. However, if they get hot, they could
take down any team in the state.

Terre Haute South
Coach:
Alan Maroska
Last
seasonâ??s record: 12-10
Tournament:
Lost in Terre Haute North Sectional Semifinal to Plainfield, 56-49.

Projected
starters:
Unavailable

Outlook:
The unbeaten Braves will be tested early and often from here out. With games
against Ben Davis, Warren Central, Bloomington North and Lawrence North coming
in the next month, we will learn a lot more about this South team.

Predictions:
North
semistate: South Bend Washington over Fort Wayne South
South
semistate: Jeffersonville over Avon
State
champion: South Bend Washington

Circle City Classic: Nationally ranked Lexington Catholic uses fourth-quarter rally to force OT, knocks off 2A No. 1 Heritage Christian, 68-64

INDIANAPOLIS
â??? The second game of the Circle City Classic Challenge of Champions was
a first for the event itself. In years past, all the games were on the
boys side. On Dec. 9, the girls got their chance to shine.

And the game didnâ??t disappoint. Lexington Catholic, ranked fourth
nationally, forged a fourth-quarter rally after Class 2A No. 1 Heritage
Christian got its biggest lead of the game at 10 with 6:13 left. The
Knightsâ?? rally forced overtime, where Lexington Catholic eventually
knocked off the 2A defending state champs, 68-64.

â??We did a good job â??? it was a good game,â? said Heritage Christian
second-year coach Rick Risinger. â??These are types of games we need to
have when it comes down to state tournament time.

Trailing by two with 3:35 left in the first quarter, the Eagles got
baskets from Claire Freeman and Kelly Faris as well as a 3-pointer from
Bre Jones to go on a 7-0 run and take a 15-10 lead. A Faris three put
Heritage Christian up, 18-13, after one.

HC had a chance to push the lead to seven at the start of the second
quarter, but Faris missed two free throws. From there, Lexington
Catholic went on its biggest run of the game, reeling off 11 straight
points to take a 24-18 lead with 3:00 left in the half. The Eaglesâ??
first points of the quarter didnâ??t come until the 2:53 mark, when Emily
Anderson made a layup.

The Knights then got a three-point play and a 3-pointer from Keyla
Snowden to jump ahead 30-22 before a three from Freeman cut the Eaglesâ??
deficit to five, 30-25, at the half.

What
was a relatively slow start offensively for both teams (HC shot 44
percent from the field in the first half, Lexington 39 percent) shifted
quickly into high gear as the second half opened.

After the Knights pushed their lead to seven at 32-25 on a layup
from Briana Green, the rest of the quarter found the Eagles trying to
catch up.

Heritage Christian finally caught the Knights when Freeman hit a
jumper late in the third to tie it at 44. The quarter ended knotted at
46 after Lexington Catholic got a basket from Green and Freeman hit two
free throws for Heritage Christian.

The Eagles then went on a 10-0 run thanks to eight straight free
throws and a jumper from Freeman to start the fourth, giving them their
biggest lead of the game. And just like the third quarter with HC
trying to scramble, the fourth quarter was all about the Knights
fighting back.

Lexington Catholic finally equaled Heritage Christian when Snowden
hit a runner in the lane after an Eagles turnover, tying the game at
62.

The Eagles took back the lead after a steal and layup by Jones with
under a minute to go. Lexington Catholic proceeded to turn the ball
over on its ensuing possession, but the Eagles promptly returned the
favor.

That set the stage for Natalie Novoselâ??s game-tying basket, and the
two standout teams were tied again at 64. Heritage Christian had one
last chance but turned the ball over on a traveling violation with 2.1
seconds left. Lexington Catholic was unable to get a shot off, forcing
overtime.

The Knights put a quick dagger in HCâ??s heart on a 3-pointer from
Snowden to start the overtime. The Eaglesâ?? ensuing possessions resulted
in a missed shot and a turnover, virtually sealing the deal for
Lexington Catholic.

A late free throw with 23.7 seconds left from Novosel was the final
score of the contest, giving Lexington Catholic the 68-64 win in
overtime.

â??Itâ??s a little disappointing we didnâ??t win â??? we were right there,â?
said Risinger. â??We had the lead, and if we could have controlled a few
things I think we could have finished the thing off.

Snowden led Lexington Catholic with a game-high 21 points. She was
joined in double figures by Novosel (17 points) and Green (13).

Leading the way for Heritage Christian was Freeman with 19 points, while Faris chipped in 13 and Jones had 10.

â??It was a great experience, and we will walk away and learn some
things from this,â? Risinger said. â??But we are not discouraged by any
means.

With the loss, Heritage Christian falls to 6-1. The Eagles return to
action Dec. 11 when they try to defend their championship in the
Indianapolis City Tournament.
