GBB RANKINGS: 3A Benton Central, 1A Vincennes Rivet new No. 1s

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association has released its ninth set of polls for the regular season, and we have a pair of new No. 1-ranked schools in Benton Central and Vincennes Rivet.

Class 3A Benton Central takes over the top spot from Fort Wayne Elmhurst based on the former’s impressive 70-58 victory over 1A No. 5 Turkey Run and the latter’s 71-56 defeat at the hands of visiting 2A No. 2 Oak Hill. In the small-school division, Rivet ascends from No. 2 to overtake Barr-Reeve after its 52-49 defeat of the host Vikings.

The other top-ranked teams from last week – 4A Ben Davis and 2A Heritage Christian – stay the same. But there’s lots going on everywhere else this week as we prepare for the Jan. 29 sectional draw:

4A: Plainfield bumps up two spots from ninth to seventh after the Quakers’ thrilling 57-53 win over 4A previously undefeated rival Mooresville. Decatur Central and Floyd Central (tied for 12th) also enter the large-school rankings.

3A: Norwell scootches up two places into a second-place tie with Elmhurst, while Rushville rises from seventh to fifth and Evansville Memorial goes from ninth to seventh.

2A: Taylor jumps from sixth to fourth after its 69-44 drubbing of 3A host Hamilton Heights.

1A: Southern Wells ascends from ninth to seventh after knocking 2A host Garrett from the ranks of the unbeaten, 46-38.

Mililani girls win OIA title

By Leila Wai
Honolulu Advertiser

This year’s group of seniors were freshmen the last time the Mililani girls soccer team won the O’ahu Interscholastic Association championship.

The Trojans won their 11th title, beating Kahuku, 3-0, in the OIA Red Division Championship last night at Roosevelt’s Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium in front of approximately 400 fans.

“It feels good to win it as a senior, because I felt like I contributed more to the team,” said senior forward Chelsey Goo, who scored in last night’s game, and was one of two freshmen, along with Jackie Suan, who were on the varsity in 2006.

Mililani, Kahuku, Pearl City, Kapolei, Kaiser and Roosevelt all qualified for the HHSAA girls soccer Division I state tournament, which runs from Feb. 4 to 7 at the Waipi’o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

“We were a little anxious going into the game because we’ve been playing pretty decently all season, and you want to finish strong,” Mililani coach Ray Akiona said. “Fortunately, we had the matchup on speed.

Kailua girls capture OIA White title, 3-0

By Leila Wai
Honolulu Advertiser

Kailua won its first O’ahu Interscholastic Association girls soccer title yesterday and its players rewarded co-head coach Wil Kimura with an ice bath in appreciation.

Kailua defeated Wai’anae, 3-0, in the OIA White Division Championships at Roosevelt’s Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium in a showdown between the East and West champions.

“If you get water thrown on you, you must be doing something right,” Kimura said.

Kailua (8-0-0) and Wai’anae (7-2-2) already qualified for the HHSAA Division II state tournament, which will be held Feb. 4 to 7 at the Waipi’o Peninsula Soccer Complex. Third-place Radford (5-3-4), which defeated Nanakuli, 2-1, Friday, also earned a state berth.

“I’m excited. It’s once in a lifetime … well, hopefully not, but it’s amazing,” said junior forward Ashley Kanoho, who scored a goal yesterday.

Nanakuli, Kalaheo paddle to titles

Honolulu Star Bulletin
By Kyle Galdeira
Special to the Star-Bulletin

Nanakuli made it a clean sweep, claiming the Oahu Interscholastic Association West boys, girls and mixed divisions in outrigger canoe paddling yesterday afternoon at Keehi Lagoon.

Kalaheo nearly did the same in the OIA East. The Mustangs claimed victory in the boys and mixed divisions. Anuenue took the girls race — edging Kalaheo by 4.91 seconds — in the final OIA regular-season regatta.

The top six crews from both the OIA West and East, as determined by a cumulative point standings system encompassing the league’s four regular-season races, advance to Saturday’s OIA championship regatta. The overall boys, girls and mixed titles are up for grabs.

“We’ve been doing well all season,” said Daniel Rzonca, a member of Nanakuli’s undefeated boys squad. “We stick together as a team. (We focus on) pulling yourself, and taking care of the person in front of you.”

The Golden Hawks won the mile-long boys course in 8 minutes, 10.4 seconds. The winning crew members are: Dylan Kuewa, Brian Kaaa, Koalii Bumanglog, Rzonca, Maika Kamakeeaina and Dayne Van Gieson.

They finish goals, and each other’s sentences too.

“We just want to succeed … ” started Mililani junior forward Mari Miyashiro.

“So we work off each other and help each other out,” senior forward Chelsey Goo finished.

Goo scored in the first half and Miyashiro added one in the second half for the Trojans in their 2-0 win over Kapolei in the O’ahu Interscholastic Association semifinals last night at Roosevelt High School’s Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

Mililani plays Kahuku tonight at Roosevelt at 6:30 for the championship. The White championship game between Wai’anae and Kailua is at 4 p.m.

Mililani (13-0-1), the only undefeated team in the OIA, and Kapolei already have spots in the state tournament, along with Pearl City and Kahuku. The Red Raiders beat the Chargers, 1-0, in the other semifinal game.

Red Raiders hold off Chargers, 1-0, for first finals appearance

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

“Red Raider Nation” will enter unchartered territory tonight, as Kahuku makes what is believed to be its first appearance in an O’ahu Interscholastic Association girls soccer championship game.

The Red Raiders, who finished fifth in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division, continued their improbable run through the postseason with a 1-0 victory over West runner-up Pearl City last night at Roosevelt’s Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

They improved to 6-5-4 in league play and will face West champ Mililani (13-0-1) in tonight’s 6:30 title game at the same venue.

“It feels good,” said Kahuku sophomore Zhane Santiago, who scored the game’s only goal last night in the 16th minute. “We’re the underdogs, but we’ve got adrenaline and we’re more hyped. Everybody is playing together.”

That was exhibited on Santiago’s goal, her fourth of the week.

Amber Abregano spun and centered the ball to Kaylee Au near the top of the penalty box, and Au then pushed it to Santiago on the right side, about 15 yards out. Santiago controlled the pass, squared toward the goal and shot it across to the lower left corner of the net.

“My coach (Krisha Kai) taught me to be calm,” Santiago said. “I just tried to pop it into the corner.”

BB: 4A #9 Plainfield spoils 4A #5 Mooresville’s perfect season, 57-53

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

PLAINFIELD – Class 4A No. 9 Plainfield scored the hat trick Jan. 23, snapping a lengthy losing streak to Mid-State Conference rival Mooresville with a gutsy 57-53 victory that ruined the previously undefeated Pioneers’ perfect season and lassoed control of the conference race.

Sophomore swingman Julia Henson scored 24 points to lead Plainfield (14-1 overall, 5-0 in Mid-State play), which had dropped at least 11 straight games to its neighbor just to the south on State Road 267. Mooresville (15-1, 4-1) must now hope that Decatur Central (13-5, 4-1) can forge a three-way tie for the league lead when the Hawks host Plainfield Jan. 30.

A game that saw the home-standing Quakers lead by as many as 15 points in the first half ended up with three ties in a frenzied fourth quarter. Mooresville even had a chance to tie or win the game with a 3-pointer in the last 10 seconds, but the visitors missed a layup and couldn’t corral a loose ball at their own free throw line with five seconds to play before a screaming packed house.

Six-one junior center Meagan Callaway paced the Pioneers with 19 points, while sophomore guard Jama Sharp added 18. Six-one senior post Rachel Turk joined Henson in double figures with 15 for Plainfield.
