GBB: 3A #12 Hamilton Heights wears down 2A #5 Lapel, 71-59

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

ARCADIA – If you happened to see a vapor trail over the skies of Central Indiana the evening of Jan. 22, it originated from the gymnasium at Hamilton Heights as the Class 3A No. 12 host Huskies and 2A fifth-ranked Lapel spent most of the night battling at a stunning pace.

The key phrase is “most of the night.” Hamilton Heights coach Kurt Ogden’s masterful use of his deep and talented bench was the difference in a 71-59 victory for the Huskies.

Those point totals are modest considering the pace at which both teams scored early in the contest. They combined to trip the scoreboard for 45 total points in the first quarter, with 27 of those coming from Lapel. The Bulldogs spent the first period cutting through a variety of Heights presses like a knife through butter and scoring at will on the other end.

Nonetheless, Hamilton Heights (14-2) continued to use its pressure tactics, and the reason why began to become evident in the second quarter. Lapel (13-2) continued to easily break the press, but the shots didn’t fall with such regularity as the Bulldogs hit just 5 of 16 from the field in the second eight minutes.

Meanwhile, the open-court style of play was doing nothing for Lapel’s own defensive effort. Heights scored 23 points in the second stanza, including the final seven, to tie the game at 40 heading to halftime.

If the second quarter had hinted at the Huskies’ strategy, the third period made it painfully obvious to the Lapel faithful. The Bulldogs opened the period on a 5-0 run, but fatigue quickly began to set in. Hamilton Heights scratched its way back to finally take the lead at 51-48 late in the quarter, and Huskies led 53-51 heading to the fourth.

If the final eight minutes had been the later rounds in a heavyweight bout, the fight would have been called on a technical knockout. The Bulldogs were gallant, but they were out of gas.

Picture-perfect fast-break passes from earlier in the game were now delivered a step late and turned into numerous turnovers. Jump shots drilled in the first half were now delivered on tired legs and rarely found the mark.

At their end, the Huskies’ fresher troops had no trouble finding and hitting open shots. Only third-year coach Ogden’s call for a four-corners offense in the final three minutes kept the final margin from reaching 20 points or more.

Neither of these squads is wanting for offensive weapons as both teams had three players with at least 13 points on the evening. Hamilton Heights’ sophomore Jessica Carr claimed game-high honors with 23 points, most of those in the second half.

The slate doesn’t get any easier this week for Hamilton Heights as the Huskies host 2A No. 6  Taylor (16-3) Jan. 24 in attempt to clinch the Mid-Indiana Conference crown. The Titans stand at 4-1 in league play, tied for second place with Northwestern (11-6) and a game and a half behind the 6-0 Huskies.

Lapel will return to action Jan. 27 with a road trip to Tri (9-6).

After the game, Ogden confirmed to Hoosier Authority that the Huskies entered the game believing they could wear down Lapel. His comments are in the video player on this page!

GBB: Perry Meridian runs past host Center Grove, 58-44

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

The terms “size” and “speed” are common in sports. The key to Perry Meridian’s 58-44 victory over Center Grove was “size WITH speed” Jan. 20 as the host Trojans simply had no answer for the Falcons’ talented and mobile post duo of Amanda Raker and Lindsay Spears.

Coach Mike Armstrong wanted his Falcons to speed the tempo of this game from the outset. They came into the game believing they could beat the Trojans up and down the floor, and they were right.

Perry Meridian (No. 14 in the latest Sagarin 4A ratings, 14-4 overall and in a four-way tie for first place in Conference Indiana at 4-1) used full-court pressure to speed up the game and force Center Grove into quick shots. The Falcons then ran like the wind in transition, scoring one easy bucket after another throughout the first half of the game.

Many of the scores were a result of Raker beating the Center Grove inside players down the court. She finished with 10 points at in the opening half, and Perry Meridian had opened a comfortable 34-19 lead at intermission.

“Comfortable” is a relative term. Three times this season, Perry Meridian has surrendered leads of 15 points or more. This time, however, no serious challenge was forthcoming from Center Grove.

The Trojans (No. 17 in the 4A power ratings, 9-6 overall and fourth in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference at 2-1) did have some success, though, in slowing Perry Meridian down in the second half as the Falcons scored only four points in transition during the final two quarters. Yet Center Grove could not muster enough offense of its own to seriously close the gap.

The closest they came were two chances to cut the margin to 11 late in the third quarter. But the Trojans came up empty on each occasion.

Raker, it should be noted, was even more deadly in the half court. She scored 13 in the second half to finish with a game-high 23 points. Katelyn Walker was also in double figures for Parry Meridian with 12 markers, and Spears added 10 points on the evening.

Britney Shaner and Kirsten Gliesmann led Center Grove with 12 points apiece.

The two schools are likely to meet again in Sectional 11 next month at Whiteland. But before that, Perry Meridian visits township rival Southport Jan. 23 while Center Grove will host undefeated 4A top-ranked Ben Davis Saturday.

GBB RANKINGS: Barr-Reeve back on top in 1A poll

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association has released its eighth set of polls for the regular season, and the news this week is the showdown that’s coming Tuesday between Class A’s two finest. That’s when new No. 1 Barr-Reeve hosts previous leader and current No. 2 Vincennes Rivet.

Each school sits at 14-1 after coming off its first loss of the season (Barr-Reeve 68-59 at 1A No. 10 Northeast Dubois, Rivet 51-38 at 1A fourth-ranked White River Valley). They will face off Jan. 20 at Barr-Reeve in a regular-season rematch of Rivet’s thrilling double-overtime 60-59 win a year ago. (Rivet also ousted Barr-Reeve by one, 62-61, in last year’s sectonal semifinal.)

Strangely, Barr-Reeve received zero first-place votes compared with four for Rivet. Even more bizarre is the 10 first-place votes received by No. 3 Oregon-Davis. Can’t wait for that small-school tournament!

Elsewhere, the other top-ranked teams from last week – 4A Ben Davis, 3A Fort Wayne Elmhurst, and 2A Heritage Christian – all remain unchanged. Mitchell is the lone new school, coming in tied for 16th with Plymouth in 3A.

Finally, there are five schools that are making noticeable upward moves this week. Norwell goes from sixth to fourth and Evansville Memorial from 12th to ninth in 3A, Speedway moves from 10th to seventh and Jimtown from 12th to 10th in 2A, and 1A Northeast Dubois rises from 13th to 10th.

Teams are listed by current ranking followed by school, record, vote total, and first-place votes if applicable. Your 71 ranked schools from Jan. 19:

West Hawaii Today

Hawaii Prep 4, Honokaa 3:
Ka Makani survived a late Honokaa (5-4-1) comeback at home and improved to 9-2.

HPA senior Korey Tsubota scored the second of his two goals — his 17th of the season — off an assist from junior Joey Oh in the 78th minute to give Ka Makani (9-2) what seemed to be a safe 4-1 lead.

However, the Dragons’ Ian Laird found the net in the 80th minute, and senior Jake Shiraki scored his second goal of the game and eighth of the season four minutes into stoppage time. The teams played three more minutes before HPA held on for the win.

Ka Makani goalkeeper Bobby Stomski made two key saves against Laird on a Honokaa penalty kick in the 76th minute.

Oh scored HPA’s other two goals — his seventh and eighth of the season. Tsubota and his brother, junior Tyler Tsubota, each had an assist.

‘Iolani makes case for No. 1
By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

The sequel is promising, to say the least.
When ‘Iolani and Kamehameha meet again, there will probably be even more bruises and collisions than they had last night. Second-ranked ‘Iolani got 13 points from Pablo Warner and escaped with a 44-42 win over No. 1 Kamehameha before 500 fans at the Father Bray Athletic Complex.

‘Iolani (13-3) improved to 3-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu despite committing 23 turnovers, including nine in the final quarter. Kamehameha’s relentless defense was largely responsible for that. The Warriors rallied from a 40-29 deficit to within 40-36 on a free throw from Blake Viena with 2:31 remaining.

‘Iolani had a somewhat comfortable 44-38 lead after Trevyn Tulonghari fed Warner for a fast-break layup with 35 seconds to go. However, Chaz Bajet drove for a tough bank shot in the lane, and after a backcourt turnover by the Raiders, Micah Christenson tipped in a miss by Shane Matayoshi to bring the visitors within 44-42 with 10 seconds left.

No. 2 ‘Iolani boys hang on to top No. 1 Kamehameha
By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

‘Iolani withstood three Kamehameha shot attempts in the final five seconds last night to hold off the Warriors, 44-42, in a thrilling Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball showdown.

A home crowd of about 600 watched the Raiders, ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser’s statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improve to 3-0 in the ILH. The No. 1-ranked Warriors fell to 2-1.

‘Iolani jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never trailed, but the Raiders felt Kamehameha breathing down their neck the entire game, including the final 22 seconds when the Warriors cut a 44-38 lead to 44-42 after baskets by Chaz Bajet and Micah Christenson.

“They’re definitely athletic and they always try hard,” said ‘Iolani senior forward Pablo Warner, who finished with a team-high 13 points. “We knew they’re going to play physical all the time.”
