Moanalua boys topple Kahuku, 64-58
By Wes Nakama

KAHUKU — Waiting only four days to even its score with Kahuku, Moanalua raced past the Red Raiders, 64-58, last night in O’ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball action.
Na Menehune improved to 6-1 in league play and are tied with Kahuku for first place in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division. The Red Raiders had held off Moanalua, 58-53, last Thursday.
But due to a quirk in the schedule, the two teams met again last night and Na Menehune took advantage of the opportunity, despite a 31-point effort by Red Raiders guard Nehoa Akina.
“(Thursday) was a disappointing loss,” said Moanalua guard Josiah Kauhola, who scored a team-high 21 points last night. “But we came back the next day, watched some film, and then just worked harder. We didn’t want a disappointing loss again.”
Na Menehune finished the first half with a 6-0 run to lead 30-25 at the break, then started the third period with an 11-0 run highlighted by Marcus Monroe’s thunderous two-handed slam dunk off an alley-oop pass from freshman Marcus Keene, followed by Monroe’s free throw.
“We never came out with any fight, our guys weren’t up for it,” Kahuku coach Hiram Akina said. “We were not getting back quick enough on the transition, and that’s what we had talked about before the game. In fact, that was No. 1 (priority). We knew we couldn’t give up those transition baskets.”
The Red Raiders clawed back and closed it to 62-56 after Nehoa Akina’s layup with 24 seconds remaining in the game, but Kauhola sank two free throws a second later.
Kawehena Johnson’s layup with 13 seconds left cut it to 64-58 and Kahuku came up with a steal following the ensuing inbounds pass, but Akina’s off-balanced 3-point attempt missed with seven ticks remaining.

Punahou vs. Kamehameha basketball
Taylor Crabb hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:11 left and Henry Cassiday sank a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to rally visiting Punahou to a 48-45 win over Kamehameha in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener for both teams at Kekuhaupi’o Gymnasium last night.
DeForest Buckner scored 13 points and Crabb added 10 to lead the Buffanblu (1-0). The defending Division I state champion Warriors were led by Shane Matayoshi’s 13 points.
“It’s a good win for our team,” Punahou coach Alika Smith said. “For our guys to come in here and scratch, fight and claw, I think that’s just a tribute to how hard they’ve been working so far, but this just one step of many to come.”
The teams went back-and-forth for much of the night as the game saw eight ties and nine lead changes.
Kamehameha broke a 43-all tie after Micah Christenson made an open 17-footer with 1:40 left, but Crabb answered for Punahou with his second 3-pointer of the game to make it 46-45.
