No. 1 Kamehameha goes down

No. 1 Kamehameha goes down

By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

Taylor Crabb scored 12 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer from NBA range with 1:12 left, as No. 3 Punahou stunned top-ranked Kamehameha 48-45 last night at Kekuhaupi’o Gym.

“Taylor came through,” Punahou coach Alika Smith said after his team won its Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener.

Sophomore DeForest Buckner had a career night with 13 points and 23 rebounds, nearly outboarding Kamehameha by himself.

“My dad told me to play big, play strong like Micah (Christenson),” Buckner said. “Coach said it’s my house. Nobody can come in it.”

Smith agreed.

“Everywhere we go, it’s his house,” Smith said of the 6-foot-7 sophomore.

“We got worked on the boards,” Kamehameha coach Jesse Nakanishi said of Punahou’s 41-24 edge. “It’s a tough loss. We’ll see what we’re made of. We’ve got to be resilient. We had an early loss last year.”

After Crabb’s long-range trey, Kamehameha struggled to get an open look against a fast, physical Punahou man-to-man defense. The Buffanblu, switching off on screens to that point, went with senior Henry Cassiday on Christenson, Kamehameha’s top scoring threat, for the final 1:12.

“He said, ‘I want (Christenson).’ I was caught off-guard by him wanting that, but I had faith in him, and we did just enough as a team,” Smith said.

Punahou had a foul to give, and Cassiday fouled Christenson on a drive with 12 seconds remaining. On the ensuing inbounds play, Devin Kuhns was alone for a layup, but missed and Buckner came down with the ball. Kuhns tied him up, but the possession arrow pointed to Punahou.

“We lost 31 (Kuhns). That almost gave me a heart attack,” Smith said.

GBB RANKINGS: Floyd Central skyrockets up 4A poll

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association has released its seventh and eighth set of polls for the 2009-10 girls basketball season, and we’re going to combine the two out of over-the-holidays laziness!

We begin with the first polls of 2010. Winchester is the new leader in Class 2A, taking over for previous No. 1 Austin. Otherwise, the other leaders from last year – Ben Davis (4A), Rushville (3A), and Vincennes Rivet (1A) – all remain unchanged.

But there’s considerable movement elsewhere in the New Year rankings:

•    4A: Floyd Central bounds upward from 10th to second, Westfield rises from 11th to sixth, Merrillville shoots up from 14th to seventh, and Elkhart Memorial ascends from 12th to a ninth-place tie with Decatur Central.
•    3A: Gibson Southern inches up from fourth to third, Benton Central goes from sixth to fourth, Hamilton Heights moves up from ninth to sixth, and Mt. Vernon (Fortville) bumps up from 11th to eighth.
•    2A: Jimtown moves from seventh to fourth, Boone Grove moves from eighth to sixth, and Indian Creek swaps spots with Hagerstown in going from 10th to ninth.
•    1A: North Vermillion rises from ninth to seventh and Turkey Run noses up from 10th to eighth.

Looking back, Austin was the new No. 1 in Class 2A two weeks ago after supplanting previous leader Fort Wayne Luers. The other previous poll leaders – Ben Davis (4A), Rushville (3A), and Vincennes Rivet (1A) – all stayed where they were at as we approached Christmas.

Elsewhere from the Dec. 21 polls …

•    4A: Bloomington South inched up from fifth to fourth, Kokomo ascended from 12th to fifth, South Bend Clay moved from ninth to eighth, and Floyd Central bumped up from 11th to 10th.
•    3A: NorthWood rose from eighth to fifth, Crawfordsville nosed up from ninth to eighth, Hamilton Heights jumped from 12th to ninth, and Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran went from 13th to 10th.
•    2A: Winchester moved from fourth to second, Wabash inched up from fifth to fourth, Jimtown switched with Boone Grove in going from eighth to seventh, Hagerstown bumped ahead from 10th to ninth, and Indian Creek moved from 12th to 10th.
•    1A: Barr-Reeve rose from sixth to third, Waldron moved up from seventh to sixth, North Vermillion went from 11th to ninth, and Turkey Run gobbled up four spots in moving from 14th to 10th.

Teams are listed by current ranking followed by school and record. Your Top 10s-plus ranked schools by class, first from Jan. 4 and then from Dec. 21:

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association has released its eighth poll of the 2009-10 girls hoops season that combines all four classes, and we begin the 2010 portion of the season with a sense of normalcy as Class 4A undefeated defending state champion Ben Davis maintains the top spot.
But there certainly is some rearrangin’ goin’ on below the Giants. Jeffersonville and Westfield each bump up one spot to second and third, respectively, after Mooresville’s loss to Rushville at the Hall of Fame Classic sends the Pioneers from second to fourth.
Rushville, meanwhile, moves from ninth to sixth after capturing the Classic crown in New Castle, while Floyd Central rises all the way from 14th to ninth and Merrillville makes a move among the second set of 10 in ascending from 18th to 12th.

Three cheers for Radford

Three cheers for Radford

Honolulu Advertiser

Radford High won the grand national champion title at the NCA National Cheerleading Championship Tuesday at the Dallas Convention Center.

Radford, competing in the coed advanced high school division, had the highest two-day average score in any division with 95.62 out of 100.

Carl Sandburg High School (large advanced division) of Orland Park, Ill., was second overall with 95.47, followed by Choctaw High School (94.60) of Choctaw, Okla., which placed second to Radford in the coed advanced division.

Radford also earned specialty awards for best use of jumps and superior showmanship.

“We are extremely proud to represent Radford High School and the entire state of Hawai’i,” said Radford coach Bo Frank. “I have had many special teams in my 10 years at Radford, but this team proved to be the best, we have black (champions) jackets to prove it.”

More than 150 teams competed in the championships, including state champions from Texas, Illinois, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Indiana.

Radford also placed third in the time out dance division, fifth in the fight song division and seventh in the sideline cheer division.

Team members are seniors Tiana Paling, Malyssa Barbasa, Rachel Gines, Chris Fletcher, Hunter Kea, and Melissa Lowe; juniors Kaycee Kealoha, Amber Sistoza and Liko Sevaaetasi; sophomore Ridge Frank, and freshmen Kyly Antonio and Jazzy Paling.

The coaches are Bo Frank, Thomas Luna and Travis Thomason.

EDITORIAL: 2009 in review

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
I am not much of one for year-end reviews and the like, but 2009 was an exceptional year in Indiana high school sports. The year supplied me with countless memories, both good and bad. I think it is appropriate to relate both.
So, in no particular order, here are my memories of 2009.
I will remember the state swimming finals for both boys and girls. These events share the crown for the best one-day sports atmosphere on the high school calendar. They do not get the credit they deserve because swimming is a non-revenue sport and not promoted like many of its brethren.
The girls basketball season supplied me with two memories I will carry for a long time. The fond one is from the Heritage Christian versus Oak Hill Class 2A state championship contest. The game will go down as one of the greatest in the long history of the tournament, regardless of gender.
Even more than the drama of the battle, however, I will remember the character of the teams involved. Heritage Christian took its place in history with class and dignity. The Eagles knew they had been taken to the limit. They knew that in some ways they had been lucky. Neither players nor coach shied away from those facts.
Sometimes winning with class is far more difficult than losing the same way. Heritage Christian provided a blueprint for how to do it right.
Conversely, the pride and will of the girls from Oak Hill were remarkable. They were the quintessential country kids who refused to back down to the big-city bullies. They cared little that they were facing the media darlings of the decade. They cared only about proving they belonged on the stage.
They accomplished that for the ages.
One of my worst memories of the year also comes from the girls hoop tourney. It is the sight of Crawfordsville point guard Lexi Stevens in the final minutes of the Athenians’ semistate loss to Owen Valley.
Stevens – the definition of leadership, guile, and clutch play – had suffered a serious ankle injury late in the first quarter of the game. She returned in the second half despite pain that would have quickly sidelined most players. As the tense final moments of the game unfolded, Stevens called on the intelligence, determination, and guts that had so often allowed her to guide her team through. They did not fail her, but the ankle did.
She deserved a better moment in the spotlight, and so did the Athenians.
My strongest memory of the year comes from the boys tournament, and it has nothing to do with action on the court. I will never forget driving from Seymour to Osgood to attend the pep rally for Jac-Cen-Del after the Eagles won the 1A semistate. I remember the six-mile traffic jam to enter a town of no more than 1,500 people.
I remember the more than 3,000 people who crammed into a gymnasium to pay homage to players from a school with an enrollment of about 200. I was proud to witness a community that was still unabashedly proud to indelibly link its identity with the accomplishment of its youth.
It was the Indiana basketball I recalled from my youth, and it was wonderful. Still, my main memory of that evening is that intertwined with all of the joy was a melancholy that was palpable.
The most-revered person in the gym that night was a frail man in his 90s. He was the coach who had led the local lads to a failed attempt against the big-city teams at the same semistate level nearly 50 years ago.
With all they had accomplished, and all they would go on to accomplish, you still got the feeling the folks in Osgood would trade it for one more chance to measure themselves in open competition. There was a tinge of sadness that such an opportunity had been forever stolen from them, and through no fault of their own.
Track & field season brought the exploits of a young lady from Pendleton Heights, Ellie McCardwell, who exploded onto not only the state but also the national stage in track and field. The diminutive McCardwell established herself as one of America’s best female pole vaulters.
The great part of this story is that McCardwell had not pursued such a dream her entire life. Rather, she was introduced to the sport while in middle school and fell in love with it. It also helped that she was a classy, well-spoken young lady who represented her school in tremendous fashion.
Softball brought us the New Palestine Dragons. It is not that these ladies won the 3A title that is memorable; it is the way they did it. They forever dispelled the myth that girls do not approach goals and competition like boys.
They viewed winning this title as their job, and they did their job very, very well. They also did it with a sense of absolute joy.
I will carry two memories from this fall’s football season. The first is Carmel’s loss in the classic battle versus Warren Central for the 5A state crown. There is no question the Greyhounds lost the title on a very bad officiating call. There are very few who would question that stance.
Nonetheless, for Carmel to lose in that fashion was ironic at the very least. This was a team that had clawed to a 12-1 record by making, taking advantage of, or simply benefitting from every odd or unusual break in game after game.
Whether the final was a travesty, irony, or poetic justice is a matter of perspective. But it is somehow fitting that an unusual circumstance was involved in the outcome.
My fondest recollection from the football season will be watching the West Lafayette Red Devils win the 3A championship. Coach Marshall Overley is one of the nicest men in Indiana sports. He is unassuming, devoid of ego, and an educator first. Football coaches are often guilty of promoting an “us against the world” philosophy that carries well beyond their opponents to anybody within their own school, the media, or community who might believe that there is more in life than football.
Marshall Overley is a man who makes sure his players know there is more to life than football.
I have left out many, many, memories from the past year, some good and some bad. But somehow, in the end, it is always the glory of the human spirit that gravitates to the top of a sports fan’s mind.
Happy New Year from Hoosier Authority!
