4A No. 3 Carmel nearly squanders 13-point lead but holds off A No. 1 Heritage Christian, 44-41

By Adam
Rouse
Staff Writer

CARMEL â??? Class 2A No. 1 Heritage Christian made a valiant attempt at erasing
a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit Jan. 24 but came up just shy as 4A
third-ranked Carmel
survived to win its third straight game, 44-41.

The
visiting Eagles (16-3) completely turned around a game controlled by the host
Greyhounds during the first three periods by limiting Carmel to just three points in the final
eight minutes. Thatâ??s not a typo â??? three
fourth-quarter points.

Carmel (17-3) took a 41-28 lead into the
fourth before Heritage Christian began slowly chipping away at the deficit and
getting stop after stop.

Senior
Melanie Thornton made one of two free throws to give the Greyhounds a 42-34
advantage with 4:21 to go, but Carmel
would not score another point for over four minutes. The Eagles, meanwhile,
went on a 7-0 run and actually had a chance to knot the contest at 42.

Junior
Courtney Turner connected on a pair of free throws to start the run before
freshman Kelly Faris went to work. The 5â??10â? forward drove to the hoop and hit
a layup while getting fouled to cut the deficit to 42-38 with 2:22 left. Faris
hit the free throw to make it 42-39, and suddenly it was a one-possession game.

Carmel continued to struggle from the
field and couldnâ??t get any offense going â??? the Greyhounds were 0 for 6 from the
floor in the fourth quarter. But neither team could score over the next 90
seconds until Faris took the ball and went to the hoop again.

The result
was the same as the freshman put in the layup and was fouled to bring the
Eagles within one at 42-41 with 47.2 seconds to go. The only difference was the
result of the free throw, as Faris was unable to connect.

Forced to
foul with under 20 seconds left, Heritage Christian sent Carmelâ??s Kristin Craig to the line. Craig had
been ice cold from the field to this point (0 for 7), but the senior point
guard stepped up and hit two big ones to make it 44-41 with :13.2 on the clock.

The Eagles
would get two opportunities in the final 13 seconds, but neither was
successful.

Sophomore
Kayla Skaggsâ?? 3-point attempt was blocked by Thornton, but Heritage Christian retained
possession with 2.6 seconds left. The in-bounds pass went to junior Bre Jones,
who was well beyond the arc on the left side, but her fadeaway 3-pointer didnâ??t
come close to sending the game into overtime.

Sophomore
Danielle Havel led Carmel with 14 points, while Thornton scored 13.

Heritage
Christian did not put a player in double figures, but three players (Turner,
Skaggs, and Faris) had nine points apiece.

Carmel stormed out of the gate to an 11-0
lead before the Eagles finally got on the scoreboard at the 3:05 mark of the
first quarter. The Greyhounds led by five after one and by seven at halftime.

West Lafayette continues mastery of larger Lafayette Jeff with late 65-61 victory

By Jeff Luzadder

Contributing Writer

WEST LAFAYETTE â??? The West Lafayette girls basketball team had
something to prove Jan. 17 against visiting Lafayette Jefferson. The
Red Devils had beaten Jeff four straight times over the past three
years, but they wanted to prove that their 58-52 victory in the J &
C Hoops Classic back in November was no accident.

And despite the fact that this was West Lafayetteâ??s seventh game in
12 days, the Red Devils came away with a 65-61 in a non-conference game
between schools just outside the stateâ??s Class 3A and 4A rankings,
respectively.

According to West Lafayette coach Craig Shaeffer, his team had been
working on defensive drills for a few days in practice. That hard work
paid off against Lafayette Jeff as the Bronchos (13-5) were held to
just 6-of-20 shooting in the first half, and West Lafayette (11-6) held
a 25-16 lead at the break.

After cutting the gap by just one (47-39) in a much higher-scoring
third quarter, Jeff rallied early in the final period behind Shanea
Wyattâ??s seven points in the first five minutes. Wyant, Jeffâ??s leading
scorer coming into the game at 19 points per, had been held to just
four through the first three quarters. But her effort sparked the
Bronchos to only their second lead of the game at 58-57 midway through
the fourth.

But with the score tied at 59 and only a minute to go, Red Devil
guard Michelle Oswalt hit a layup to put West Lafayette up for good. A
key stat was West Lafayetteâ??s 30-25 advantage in rebounding.

The Red Devils were led in scoring by Brooke Baumis, who had 13
points to go along with seven rebounds. Oswalt, meanwhile, tallied 12
points and had nine assists.

Lafayette Jeff was paced by senior forward Ashley Becker with 19 points.

3A No. 14 Concordia keeps slim SAC hopes alive with 48-43 victory over 2A No. 3 Harding

By Colin Altevogt

Staff Writer

FORT WAYNE â??? Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran found itself on the opposite side of a familiar position.

Building leads as large as 14 points, Concordia failed to put away Class 2A No. 3 Harding until the final minute. The visiting Hawks held Concordia scoreless for over eight minutes but could not take the lead, and the 3A No. 14 Cadets led wire-to-wire in a crucial 48-43 Summit Athletic Conference victory.

The game was eerily reminiscent of two previous matchups between Concordia and the SAC leader, 3A No. 12 Fort Wayne Luers (13-4 overall, a perfect 6-0 in conference play following a 54-40 win over Fort Wayne Northrop Jan. 14). In both contests, the Cadets faced double-digit leads late in the game before storming back but ultimately falling short.

With its lone conference loss coming in a 50-47 defeat Dec. 16 at Luers, Concordia (11-3, 5-1) sits one game back in the standings, tied with Fort Wayne South (13-2, 5-1 following a 77-29 rout of Fort Wayne Snider Jan. 14).

Playing its fifth game in nine days, Harding looked sluggish as Concordia jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead that it would never relinquish. The Hawks, however, didnâ??t cave immediately. Notre Dame-bound senior Danielle Ben-Tsvulun got her team on the board with a jumper from the foul line, and Harding rattled off seven unanswered points.

The Cadets, though, countered with a 12-1 run to end the quarter. Concordiaâ??s full-court, man-to-man defense gave Harding fits, holding the Hawks 6:17 without a field goal.

Concordia sophomore Alissa Goeglein scored 11 of her game-high 16 in the first half as the Cadets led 29-20 at intermission.

With Hardingâ??s defense collapsing on Concordia standout Chanell Ridley, Goeglein was sensational when called upon. The 5â??10â? forward was 5 of 9 from the field for the game, including two big threes, and she was perfect from the foul line.

Concordia extended its lead to 13 points in the third quarter after Ridley scored a layup following a steal by guard Angel Fincher, a former Harding student. Harding cut the lead to 10 with 2:10 left in the quarter, but Cadet guard Sara Thieme scored on an uncontested layup and Goeglein sank a pair of free throws following a flagrant foul by Hardingâ??s Stephanie Nye.

The Cadets led 43-29 through three quarters, but Harding responded by scoring the first 10 points of the final period, cutting the 14-point deficit to just four with 1:44 remaining. With no shot clock restrictions, though, the Cadets attempted basketballâ??s equivalent of taking a knee. Fincher, Thieme, and Goeglein exchanged the ball near halfcourt, milking the clock.

Forced to finally foul, the Hawks sent Thieme to the line. She hit one of two, ending a scoreless drought of more than eight minutes for the Cadets. But Harding sophomore Jasmine Yarbrough cut the lead to three on a 13-foot jumper with a minute left.

After failing to create a quick turnover, Harding sent Ridley to the line. The favorite for SAC player of the year split a pair of free throws with 52 seconds on the clock, creating another two-possession game at 45-41. Ben-Tsvulun missed a shot from point-blank range and fouled Ridley, who subsequently missed the front end of a one-and-one.

Ben-Tsvulun banked a shot off the glass, slicing the lead in half, and the somehow-hanging-on Hawks immediately sent Fincher to the line. Needing both shots to ice the game, Fincher couldnâ??t, making the front end but missing the bonus.

With the ball back and a chance to tie, MyQueisha Bratton knifed into the lane but tripped before being able to kick the ball out. Thieme grabbed the loose ball and, after being fouled, finally nailed a pair from the line with 7.2 seconds on the clock.

Concordiaâ??s last points from the field came at the 1:45 mark of the third quarter, but it didnâ??t matter. The Cadets went 5 for 9 from the stripe in the final quarter to hang on to their lead and pull out the victory.

Harding will get its shot at first-place Luers Jan. 20. Concordiaâ??s next big game will be at home Jan. 27 against South in a matchup that, pending the outcome of the Harding-Luers tilt (since Luers owns a December victory over South as well), could have huge conference title implications.

3A No. 3 cold Chatard cannot overcome Carmel FT dominance in 56-44 loss to 4A top-ranked Greyhounds

By Adam Rouse

Staff Writer

CARMEL â??? Class 4A No. 1 Carmel attempted 22 free throws and limited Indianapolis Chatard to only two field goals in a decisive fourth quarter Jan. 10 as the Greyhounds defeated the Class 3A third-ranked Trojans, 56-44.

Both teams sported nearly perfect 13-1 records heading into the showdown, but throughout the first half it was Carmel that looked every bit the top-ranked team in the state.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter and held the Trojans without a field goal until the 3:24 mark, when senior Beth Reed finally put Chatard on the board after the Trojans missed their first eight shots from the field.

Reed and sophomore guard Anne Boese hit back-to-back threes late in the first quarter to cut the deficit to 11-8, but sophomore Ashlee Spearman countered with a three of her own to give Carmel a 14-8 lead after one.

Chatard continued to struggle from the floor in the second quarter, enabling the Greyhounds to push their lead to nine several times before taking a 28-19 advantage into halftime.

Carmelâ??s first-half scoring was balanced among eight different players, with no one having more than six points. The Icelandic Trojans, meanwhile, shot just 7 of 26 from the field and 3 of 9 from the line in the first 16 minutes.

After starting out the third quarter cold and missing its first five shots, Chatard finally got the offense rolling. The cold start did result in a 35-22 deficit, but the Trojans put together their first â??? and only â??? run of the contest to get back in the game.

Senior Jennifer Seeber started an 11-2 run with a pair of 3-pointers on consecutive trips down the court to make the score 35-28 with 2:58 to go in the third. Carmel freshman Lauren McRoberts temporarily stopped the bleeding with a jumper, but Chatard went right back to work.

Boese connected on another trifecta to cut the deficit to 37-31, and junior Jenny Traub brought the Trojans as close as they would get with a bucket to make it 37-33 with just over a minute remaining in the third.

Carmel took a 39-33 lead into the fourth, yet it was Chatard that had all the momentum â??? or so one would think. But the Trojans began the fourth just like they did the first by missing their first eight shots from the field, and by the time Chatard scored its first field goal in the final period with only 2:22 to go, a six-point deficit had ballooned to 51-39.

The Greyhounds took just six shots from the field in the fourth quarter and made half of them. Carmel didnâ??t need any field goals, though, because it was racking up a point at a time from the free throw line. The Greyhounds made 15 of 22 free throws in the fourth period alone to fuel a 17-point quarter.

Why did Carmel go to the line 22 times in eight minutes? Because Chatard was ice cold from the floor (just 2 of 14 for 14 percent) and had to foul to attempt to get back into the contest. The effort did not work as the Trojans never got closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Eight different Greyhounds scored in the game, but only one reached double figures â??? senior Jessica Janssen with 12 points. Four other players had at least six points.

Chatard had two players reach double digits, but each scored all of her points in one half. Reed had 10 points at the break but went 0 for 6 in the second half. Seeber attempted just two shots in the first and didnâ??t score but poured in 11 in the second on the strength of three trifectas.

Plainfield sends message with 55-32 romp over Cathedral

By Brandon Jones

Staff Writer

INDIANAPOLIS â??? The Plainfield Quakers are a very unique team. They
are possibly the only team in the state of Indiana that has been on
both sides of blowouts of more than 30-point margins halfway through
the 2005-06 girls basketball season.

(Besides defending Class 2A state champion Shenandoah, which Plainfield blew out 57-26 three days after Christmas, that is.)

So when Plainfield entered its Jan. 7 contest with Indianapolis
City runner-up Cathedral, neither I nor 11th-year Quaker coach Curt
Benge knew quite what to expect. Well, the Quaker players let everyone
in the gymnasium know right away as they got off in amazing fashion to
start the first quarter, and that juiced start led to an easy 55-32
victory.

Cathedralâ??s 19th-year coach Linda Bamrick decided to come out and pressure the Plainfield guards to start the contest.

Ruh-roh.

That maneuver did not go as planned as the much-bigger Quaker
backcourt found the open spots in Cathedralâ??s press and converted them
into easy baskets as Plainfield scored the gameâ??s first seven points.
Preaching patience, Bengeâ??s team passed the ball around the perimeter,
waiting for the opportunity to get the best shot available. More often
than not, that best shot resulted in points.

At the other end, Cathedral was ice cold. The larger Plainfield
defenders (the Quakers go 5â??10â?, 6â??0â?, and 61â? along the front line)
frustrated the Irish and forced them into one-and-out possessions in
dominating the glass.

Cathedralâ??s first point did not come until 2:30 of the first
period, that on a free throw by senior Lauren Sturtevant. Furthermore,
the Irish did not score their first field goal until there were just 52
seconds left in the opening quarter, and they found themselves in a
10-point hole at 13-3 after the first eight minutes.

Plainfield (12-3) cooled off from the floor early in the second
quarter, and Cathedral started to gather some momentum. But that moâ??
did not last very long as the Quakers responded with a 9-0 run late in
the period after Cathedral had cut the advantage to 17-11.

Plainfield senior Megan Egenolf matched the entire Irish output in
the first half with 13 points, and the Quakers led 28-13 at halftime.

The Quakersâ?? defense continued to press as the second half got
under way. But Cathedral was able to match them on the defensive end as
both teams went cold from the floor.

Cathedral scored the periodâ??s first six points to cut the lead to
28-19, but Plainfield followed suit in doing the same by scoring the
quarterâ??s last six points. Strangely, that was the only scoring that
would take place in the contestâ??s third period as Plainfield led 34-19.

Cathedral twice got the deficit down to single digits in the final
period, but the Irish could not get over the hump. Plainfield went on
another scoring run (this time it was 9-0) to put the game out of
reach.

Egenolf was one of three Plainfield scorers in double figures as
she led the Quakers with 21 points. Jessica Wolfe had 12 points (all in
the final period), while Allison Lutocka added 10.

Jessica Plummer was the only player for Cathedral (9-6) in double figures.
