IBCA Bob King Coaches of the Year
The IBCA also awarded six coach of the year awards, two per district. The winners …

District 1: Dori Downing, Calumet
A native of Northern Indiana, Dori played basketball and ran track at Munster before playing basketball at Purdue’s Calumet campus. She began her coaching career at East Chicago Central as the junior carsity coach from 1990 to 1996. At Calumet the past 12 seasons, her teams won divisional championships in 2002 and 2003 as well as four sectional titles. This past season, her team set school records for most wins (20) and longest winning streak (11). Calumet won its sectional and finished the season 20-5 after being eliminated in the regional. Dora also was a Junior All-Star coach in 2004.

District 1: Kem Zolman, Wawasee
After five years as boys junior high coach at his alma mater, Churubusco, Kem added two more years of seasoning at Bloomington South, then joined the Wawasee boys team as JV and varsity assistant for 10 years. For the past decade, he’s guided the Wawasee girls team, including his Miss Basketball daughter Shanna, to a combined 163-68 record and a state finals appearance in 2007. He’s tutored four sectional championship teams and two regional champs. The Warriors have had three perfect conference seasons and were Hall of Fame Classic runners-up in 2002. Kem has been conference coach of the year three times.

District 2: Brad Bowsman, Twin Lakes
A pre-algebra teacher at Twin Lakes for eight years, Brad has the “X” factor well-defined when it comes to coaching the Indians’ girls team the past five seasons. He’s led the Indians to an 87-30 record, two Hoosier Conference crowns, and one sectional title. Completing the trifecta this season, his teams won the Lafayette Journal & Courier Hoops Classic, the Indians’ own holiday tournament, and the conference crown. With a 22-2 record, this year’s squad was rated No. 1 in Class 3A for the first time in school history and finished the campaign ranked second.

District 2: John Lewellen, Cambridge City Lincoln
Cambridge City Lincoln’s John Lewellen has been in the coaching game for 21 successful years. His teams have compiled a record of 267-171 and a 106-41 mark in the Tri-Eastern Conference. Since 1994-95, his CCLHS teams have claimed a conference title about every other year, winning crowns in 1995, 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and this year, when his squad finished with a 7-0 conference mark and a season record of 17-4. Lincoln has also won sectional titles in the past four years and was regional runner-up in 2005 under Lewellen’s leadership.

District 3: Scott Smith, Jac-Cen-Del
Coach Smith is a 1983 graduate of Jac-Cen-Del, where he has coached for 12 years, including seven as girls varsity coach. His teams have won four sectionals, two Ohio River Valley Conference titles, and two Ripley County championships. His varsity record at JCD is 105-56 (.652). The Eagles finished this season 20-3 and spent much of the year ranked second in 1A despite losing four starters from last season’s 18-5 squad. He has coached eighth grade boys basketball, girls JV basketball, and boys varsity golf. He and his wife, Vickie, have two children Heather (Huff), a former player, and Trent, a seventh-grader at JCD.

‘Iolani Raiders Earn 3-2 Win Over Damien Monarchs

‘Iolani Raiders Earn 3-2 Win Over Damien Monarchs

I like close games dominated by good pitching, stingy defense, and scrappy, timely hitting. This game had it all!

The Monarchs scored first right out of the gate to take a 1-0 lead. But starting Raider pitcher, Jarrett Arakawa, buckled down to hold them scoreless through the next four innings. Trent Miyashiro came in for a strong relief appearance to get the save. Jarrett and Trent combined for a cool 3-hitter.

Monarch pitchers, DJ Andrade and Travis Derby also pitched well holding the Raiders to only five hits.

The game was won in the fifth inning when Kela Marciel connected for a booming solo home run to center field that just might have found the Ala Wai. With the score tied, 1-1, Jarrett Arakawa made it 2-1 on an RBI single. Breland Almadova then homered to left field to make it 3-1.

The 3-1 score tightened to 3-2 in the sixth as the Monarchs refused to fold but that’s how it would end as the Raiders tightened in the top of the seventh.

Damien ended the game with 2 runs, 3 hits and 2 errors. ‘Iolani had 3 runs, 5 hits and 2 errors. The winning pitcher was Jarrett Arakawa with Trent Miyashiro getting the save. DJ Andrade took the loss for the Monarchs.

Great baseball game!
