Born in Texas but raised in Kaneohe, Castle High School graduate Bryan Clay won
the gold medal in the decathlon Friday in Beijing.

Clay’s 240 point
victory is the most lopsided win in the track and field event since the 1972
games in Munich.

Relatives in Hawaii burned the midnight oil Thursday
while keeping track of Clay’s progress.

Lorreta Monroy was in constant
contact with family members who were watching Clay compete in Beijing’s Birdnest
Stadium.

“After every event they would call us and say how many points
Bryan’s leading with; he’s still in the running; he’s still number one,” said
Monroy, who works as a chef instructor at Windward Community college where she
erected a tribute to her newphew inside the cafeteria.

“For an aunt or
anybody in the family that’s been able to see this little boy grow up and follow
his goals and his dreams and being a witness to seeing him achieve all of this
has been unbelievable.”

The 2004 Olympic silver medalist in Athens and
2005 world champion, Clay, 28, finished with 8,791 points while competing in
China.

The competition started with the 100 meter run in heavy rain
Thursday.

Andrei Krauchanka of Belarus took silver at 8,551, and
Leonel
Suarez of Cuba was third in 8,527.

Roman Sebrle of the Czech
Republic, the reigning world and
Olympic champion, finished sixth.

Dan
O’Brien was the last U.S. athlete to win the Olympic
decathlon, at Atlanta in
1996.

Clay, who lives in Glendora, California will visit Hawaii for three
days starting August 29.

An autograph party will be held that day at the
Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center starting at 3 o’clock in the afternoon.

Andrew may be reached at apereira@khon2.com or ph. 591-4263.

In the end, the mainland teams showed their prowess by capturing all spots in the Saturday championship rounds of the 26th Annual Ann Kang Invitational held at ‘Iolani School. The only local team to even make the championship round was ‘Iolani.

The Saturday contenders were Newport Harbor, Los Alamitos, Wilson, Mira Costa, Corona Del Mar and Redondo.

Local teams competing were HBA, Iolani (varsity and JV), Kahuku, Mililani, Moanalua, Molokai, Pearl City, Punahou, Radford, Sacred Hearts and Word of Life. Mainland teams were Corona Del Mar, Harvard Westlake, Los Alamitos, Mira Costa, Newport Harbor, Redondo Union, San Marcos and Wilson.

Saturday saw Mira Costa continue it’s unbeaten streak, beating Wilson and Newport Harbor, before meeting Wilson again in the finals.

Mira Costa, led by 6’3″ Falyn Fonoimoana who may be the best female high school player in the country, is a very, very strong team. Wilson was able to mount a very strong attack, though, and stretched Mira Costa to 3 games and a very exciting final with Wilson refusing to give up and constantly coming back. The final score was 26-24, 25-27 and 15-11.

Kamehameha crushes Kahuku in opener
By: Paul Honda Honolulu Star Bullentin

It’s safe to say the Warrior Air Express has arrived.

A year after new coach David Stant installed a pass-first attack, fifth-ranked Kamehameha went to work and blanked No. 4 Kahuku 35-0 last night at Aloha Stadium.

Junior Edmund Kamano Jr. completed 10 of his 16 pass attempts for 137 yards, including three touchdowns. Classmate Ryan Ho scooted through Kahuku’s defense for 177 rushing yards on just nine carries, including touchdown jaunts of 80 and 71 yards. All of it came out of a pistol formation with super-wide splits between the O-linemen…

Kamehameha routs Kahuku
By: Wes Nakama Honolulu Advertiser

Showing off some razor sharp execution in its season opener, Kamehameha blitzed Kahuku, 35-0, last night in a nonleague football matchup of perennial Hawai’i high school powers.

A crowd of about 3,000 at Aloha Stadium watched Ryan Ho take a swing pass from quarterback Edmund Kamano Jr. in the right flat on the game’s first play from scrimmage and race 80 yards for a touchdown.

Kahuku fumbled the ball away five plays into the ensuing possession, with Warriors linebacker Tamatea Graham recovering on the Red Raiders’ 38. Kamano’s 2-yard bootleg TD run helped put Kamehameha up, 14-0, with 5:40 remaining in the first quarter.
