Kalani bowlers roll to OIA crowns

By Wes Nakama
Honolulu Advertiser

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS — Bowling in adjacent lanes, Kalani sophomore Jonathan Nakagawa and Mililani senior Raymond Allen were each trying to roll their way to an O’ahu Interscholastic Association individual championship yesterday.

In the end, Nakagawa finished a mere 10 pins ahead after six games to capture his first major title at Schofield Barracks Bowling Center. Nakagawa’s pinfall total was 1,291, while Allen took second with 1,281. Kapolei’s Devin Perry was third at 1,270.

“This is the first big thing I’ve won, and it’s always been a goal to win the OIA,” said Nakagawa, who finished 15th as a freshman last year. “I knew where Ray was, because he was in the lane next to me, but I was just trying to bowl for the team, trying to stay consistent and pick up spares.”

Allen rolled a 265 in the fifth game and led with a pinfall total of 1,099, compared to 1,074 for Perry, 1072 for Pearl City’s Derek Suefuji and 1,056 for Nakagawa. But Nakagawa rolled a 235 in the final game, while the other three contenders failed to break 200.

Punahou Locks up state berth
By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

Two points from losing the match, the Punahou Buffanblu needed a minor miracle.

Punahou (15-1) got its opportunity and rallied for a 21-25, 25-16, 26-24 win over No. 1-ranked Kamehameha to capture the Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular-season title and an automatic state-tourney berth.

The Buffanblu rallied back despite a 23-18 deficit in the third game.

“I could not breathe. I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, I’m gonna start crying,’ ” said Lahela Williams, who had a team-high five aces. “We’re going to states!”

Anuhea Keanini delivered perhaps her best performance of the season with 11 kills, 18 assists, 12 digs and two aces. She wasn’t alone, though, when the second-ranked Buffanblu needed clutch plays.

Buffanblu topple Warriors
By Wes Nakama
Honolulu Advertiser

In a state championship atmosphere — and possible state championship preview — Punahou rallied past Kamehameha, 21-25, 25-16, 26-24, last night to win a special playoff for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls volleyball first-round title.

The visiting Buffanblu, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser’s statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 15-1 in ILH play and secured one of the league’s two Division I state tournament berths with the victory.

The three-time defending state champion Warriors, ranked No. 1, fell to 14-2.

“I think we thrive in these moments, playing in gyms where it’s almost everybody against us,” said Punahou senior setter/outside hitter Anuhea Keanini, who finished with 14 kills, including the final two to win the match. “During those last timeouts, we just said to focus on the little things, and we came through.”

The Buffanblu had to dig down deep from a 23-18 deficit, scoring eight of the match’s final nine points. Charlotte Fonua had a block and a **** to spark a 4-0 run to close it to 23-22, and after Talia Jardin’s **** gave Kamehameha match point at 24-22, Tai Manu-Olevao had a **** and the Warriors had a hitting error to tie it 24-24.

WARRIORS HOLD OFF RAIDERS

Kamehameha 9Iolani 0

The Warriors defense came up with just enough big plays to hold off the Raiders 9-0 for a ILH varsity football victory at the Kamehameha School Kapalama Campus.

The game featured wet conditions from passing rain showers and quite a number of penalties, bad snaps, big hits, dropped passes and turnovers.

The Warriors scored off a interception return and a field goal in the second half after a scoreless first half of play.

Division One Kamehameha won its second game in a row to improve to 2-2 in the ILH. The Warriors will meet Pac-Five next week at Aloha Stadium.

Division Two Iolani fell to 5-1 in the ILH and will play Punahou next week at Punahou School. The game will be aired on television.

Friday Night ILH Football Recap

Saint Louis 52Pac-Five 7

KAHUKU — Quietly and effectively, Kahuku completed its second straight unbeaten O’ahu Interscholastic Association football regular season last night, holding off Castle, 35-20, before a homecoming crowd of about 3,000 at Carleton E. Weimer Field.

The Red Raiders, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser’s statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 7-1 overall with its seventh straight victory and finished 6-0 in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division. They earned the East’s No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming league playoffs.

Castle, which has also earned a playoff berth, fell to 4-4, 3-3.

Kahuku opened the season with a 35-0 loss to Kamehameha, casting doubt on the Red Raiders’ chances of repeating as East champ.

“We use that game (the Kamehameha loss) to push us forward,” said senior running back St. John Lessary, who rushed for 143 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries last night. “We remember how that feels, and it makes us work harder in practice.”

The Knights came out with a no-huddle offense and moved the ball well in the first quarter, with quarterback Blake Rapozo completing 7 of 10 passes for 75 yards. But on their second drive, Rapozo was sacked for an 11-yard loss and broke his left collarbone.

CASTLE (4-4, 3-3) 6 0 0 14—20
