Atlanta team edges Punahou, 51-48

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Punahou pushed another nationally ranked girls basketball team to the limit last night, but again fell just short as Westlake (Atlanta) prevailed, 51-48, in the fifth-place game of the ‘Iolani Prep Classic.

Janelle Nomura scored on a driving layup and free throw with 49 seconds remaining to close it to 51-48, and the Buffanblu gained possession with 20 seconds left after the Lions missed the front end of a one-and-one.

But a 3-point attempt by Nomura from the right wing glanced off the rim, and two more attempts after offensive rebounds fell short.

Westlake, ranked No. 4 by ESPN Rise, reached the Georgia 4A (large schools) semifinals last season and returns all five starters from a team that went 27-5. But the Lions were upset by Farrington, 54-53, in Thursday’s Classic first round, the same night Punahou lost to No. 1-ranked (USA Today) Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep (San Francisco), 44-43.

GBB RANKINGS: Topsy-turviness at the top of 1A poll

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

The Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association has released its fifth set of polls for the 2008-09 season, and the news this week is the utter chaos at the top of the Class A poll.

Five different small schools receive first-place votes this week, including big mover Argos (up from 10th to seventh). Vincennes Rivet holds down the top spot by three votes over No. Barr-Reeve, largely due to nine first-place votes for the former to only two for the Vikings. Meanwhile, No. 3 University earns three first-place votes, with No. 5 Oregon-Davis netting one.

Elsewhere, three schools enter their respective Tops 10s this week in Plainfield (10th in 4A), Winchester (10th in 2A), and 1A New Washington (ninth). Rushville is this week’s big mover, going from 10th to fifth in 3A with one first-place vote.

All the other No. 1 teams from last week – 4A Ben Davis, 3A Wawasee, and 2A Heritage Christian – remain undefeated and, not surprisingly, unchanged.

Lahainaluna looks good in trip to Oahu tourney
By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

They wear red and hoop it up with the best of them.
They’re not Kahuku or ‘Iolani. The Lady Lunas of Lahainaluna won the First Hawaiian Bank Lady Na Menehune Preseason Peek Tournament on Saturday with decisive play in the low post and on the perimeter.

Lahainaluna point guard Maiki Viela was superlative in the final against Kamehameha with 14 points, five assists and four blocks. The sophomore had only two turnovers. Center Milika Taufa had 16 points and nine boards, and swingman Rachael Rickard had 21 points and seven caroms in the Lunas’ 56-43 win.

“This year, we’re more prepared. We’re a year older and we kind of know what to expect,” Viela said.

Kamehameha, with 18 points from Pualei Furtado and 10 by Lindsey Wong, stayed close until the third quarter.

Lahainaluna (3-0) edged Mid-Pacific, another talented squad, in the semifinals, 55-50.

GBB: Free throw advantage lifts Lebanon past Western Boone, 50-49

By Jeff Hodge
Contributing Writer

LEBANON – Boone County rivalries heated up early in the basketball season for both the girls and boys teams Dec. 12 with Lebanon hosting Western Boone for a Friday night doubleheader.

The opener was truly an evenly matched contest throughout as the two girls teams shot similar percentages from the field. Western Boone was 21 of 51 for 41 percent (5 of 12 for 42 percent from behind the 3-point arc), while the host Tigers went 20 of 52 for 39 percent and 4 of 11 for 36 percent from downtown.

With Lindsey Woody lead Western Bone with 14 points and Alison Curtis pacing the Tigers with 13, the two teams battled to a 28-all tie at the half.

The turning point would come at the charity stripe. The Stars hit only two of their eight free throw attempts, while Lebanon finished 6 of 12.

With less than 15 seconds remaining in the game and the Stars holding on with a 49-48 lead, Woody went to the line with a chance to slam the freezer door shut on the Tigers.

She missed the front end of a one-and-one, however, with Lebanon’s Claire Milam grabbing the rebound and heading for the hoop. As Milam drove the lane, she found freshman Lexi Reese whose basket with under six seconds to play gave the Tigers (3-6 overall, 1-1 in the Sagamore Conference) the win over the Stars (5-4, 1-1).

Alison Curtis led Lebanon with 15 points, while Woody topped the Stars with a game-high 18.

This rivalry has heated up in recent years due largely in part to Western Boone’s play from Lindsey and Brandy Woody. Lebanon had pasted the Stars by margins of 45, 30, 18, and 48 points in the regular seasons prior to last December’s one-point win, a sign that the Woodys indeed have made it an annual tussle to look forward to.

These two teams may very well meet again in the sectional, so look for another hard-fought game between these two rivals.

Double header features 138 of Hawaii’s top players

HONOLULUHawaii’s high school football will attract national attention thanks to an inaugural All-Star football game Friday, December 12 at Aloha Stadium. The Hawaii Union Builders (HUB) Foundation will present the Hawaii All-Star Football Classic in conjunction with Sportslink, a sports-marketing and management company that produces and oversees many high school all-star sporting events. This double header features two games, the Senior Bowl Goodwill Classic at 5 p.m. and the Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl at 8 p.m.

“This is an exciting opportunity for some of the best high school prospects from Hawaii, American Samoa and the continental United States to gain national exposure,” said Mayor Mufi Hannemann.  “We hope to build on the HUB Foundation’s annual goodwill game that highlights Oahu’s top football players. We expect the long-standing Senior Bowl Goodwill Classic, coupled with the new Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl, to bring national attention to the state of Hawaii’s best of the best and showcase players of Polynesian ancestry.”

“We approached Mayor Hannemann about hosting an All-Star football game, because Hawaii has one of the best football cultures in the world, a true warrior mentality, and continually produces top football talent. The state isn’t recognized like a Texas, California or Georgia, but deserves more of the spotlight,”” said Rich McGuinness, President of Sportslink.  “We’re grateful for the Mayor’s leadership  in bringing together this All-Star Classic and for the cooperative support of HUB Foundation Chair Herbert Kaopua and Hawaii High School Athletic Association Executive Director Keith Amemiya.”

Mayor Hannemann, McGuinness, Kaopua and Amemiya today announced some of the event details during a news conference at Honolulu Hale.

The first game, the Senior Bowl Goodwill Classic, now in its 18th year, is Oahu’s premier annual football event that features many of the best OIA and ILH high school seniors. This exciting game offers 100 Oahu players a chance to showcase their talents to visiting college recruiters, raises funds for local high schools and provides scholarships to college-bound athletes.

The new competition, the Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl, will follow at 8 p.m. and highlight 40 of the nation’s top prep football players competing against a Hawaii team comprised of 38 players from across the State, three players from American Samoa, and nine mainland players with Hawaii ties. The games will be held in partnership with SportsLink, producer of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl held annually in January in the Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas, and Football University (FBU).

Position: OL

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 280

High School: Glenbard West

Profile: Watt is a competitor in every sense of the word. He explodes out of his stance, stays low, and keeps driving his legs until the play’s over. He is very athletic and displays the kind of footwork that few prospects can match. As a junior in 2007, Watt was named an All-Conference and All-Area performer.

Selection Committee Quote: “This guy finishes his blocks on almost every single play, he’s a powerful blocker who dominates the point of attack and his offense ran behind him 90% of the time last season.”

Name: Bryn Renner

Position: QB

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 190

High School: West Springfield

City, State: Springfield, VA

College: Committed to University of North Carolina

Overall he accounted for 42 touchdowns, 74 percent of his teams’ offense. He was named first team all-district, named the Patriot District Offensive Player of the year and was named All-Northern Region.

Selection Committee Quote: “He shows the arm strength, decision making, poise, and accuracy to make it big at the Division I level. A competitor and leader, he can make plays with his arm and feet. A very accurate passer who can thread the needle and does it often.”

Name: Randall Carroll

Position: WR

Height: 5’11”

Weight: 175

High School: Cathedral

City, State: Los Angeles, CA

College: Committed to USC

Profile: Carroll’s world-class speed is what separates him from other wide receivers in the class of 2009. He won the California State 100 meter dash title as a junior. He has the ability to be a deep threat, but excels as a possession receiver, and is a bona-fide playmaker with the ball in his hands. He also explodes off the ball and is an exceptional route-runner.

Selection Committee Quote: “One thing that sets him apart from the rest of the elite California prospects is his practice habits. He takes every rep at full speed, and if he doesn’t perform up to his own standards then he will go back to the front of the line and take that rep again.”

HAWAII
ALL-STAR FOOTBALL CLASSIC HIGHLIGHTS HAWAII’S GRIDIRON TALENT
West team wins Hawaii Goodwill Senior Bowl; Mainland All-Stars wins new Hawaii/Polynesia – Mainland Bowl.

HONOLULU Nearly 4,500 people turned out to watch the best of the best in high school senior football players from Hawaii, American Samoa and the Continental United States compete in the nationally televised, inaugural Hawaii All-Star Football Classic on Friday, December 12 at Aloha Stadium. This first-ever doubleheader presented by the Hawaii Union Builders (HUB) Foundation in conjunction with Football University featured more than 100 of Hawaii’s top players in the 18th Annual Hawaii Goodwill Senior Bowl and the new Hawaii/Polynesia – Mainland Bowl.

“We are so happy that the classic was such a huge success,” said Herbert S.K. Kaopua, Chairman of the HUB Foundation.  “Through the classic, we were able to raise thousands of dollars to help provide scholarships to college-bound athletes, and our local players were able to showcase their talent to college recruiters and the nation.”

Football University (owned by SportsLink, the creators of the U.S. Army Bowl on NBC) President Rich McGuinness added, “We’re so happy that we were able to be a part of such a great event.  The game truly showcased the gridiron talent that Hawaii has.”

Hawaii Goodwill Senior Bowl

For the sixth straight year, the West All-Stars defeated the East All-Stars with a final score of 21-17, thanks to two unanswered touchdowns in the second half. Jonathan Ligsay’s (Waianae High School) 5-yard run at the beginning of the fourth quarter proved to be the winning score.

The East built a 14-7 lead at halftime after a pair of touchdown catches by Keean Hoohuli (Iolani School) and Drake Miller (Farrington High School). But the West tied the game on a Iosua Manuma (Mililani High School) 6-yard pass to Kahi Perbera (Mililani High School) with just under four minutes left in the third quarter. The West then got a huge break just minutes later when the East muffed a punt return at their own 5-yard line, which was recovered by Anthony Tokunaga (Kamehameha Schools). Moments later Ligsay punched it in from 5-yards out for the decisive score.

Much of the second half was played in driving rain. In the end, the West out-gained the East, 310-272, including a 155-53 advantage rushing. Perbera led the West with 73 yards rushing. Miller was the offensive standout on the East with a pair of receptions for 91 yards.

The Hawaii Goodwill Senior Bowl, now in its 18th year, featured nearly 100 of the best OIA and ILH high school seniors.  The game gave the students a chance to showcase their talents to visiting college recruiters.  Since its inception, the Hawaii Goodwill Senior Bowl has raised nearly $100,000 for local high schools and scholarships for college-bound athletes.

Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl

Some of the best high school football players in the nation showcased their skills in the inaugural Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl but in the end the Mainland All-Stars were victorious, 22-8, in a turnover-plagued game.

The defenses ruled as the teams combined for 13 turnovers, including nine by the Hawaii/Polynesia squad. The Mainland scored 16 of its 22 points off of three Hawaii/Polynesia turnovers. While the Mainland squad took advantage of its opportunities, the Hawaii/Polynesia squad failed in their chances. Hawaii forced four Mainland turnovers but could not score off any of those, despite driving into the red zone on four occasions.

Corey Brown (Gateway High School) picked off three Hawaii passes to lead the Mainland defense. Meanwhile Bryn Renner (West Springfield High School) passed for 124 yards and a pair of long touchdown passes to lead the Mainland offense. Renner connected with Trabis Ward (Dillard High School) for a 52-yard bomb in the second quarter and David Wilson (George Washington High School) for a 34-yard pass in the fourth quarter to lead the Mainland to victory.

Hawaii/Polynesia turned the ball over on its first two possessions to help set up nine points by the Mainland squad in a 65 second span.  Following a fumble recovery, Wilson scored on a 4-yard run for the game’s initial score at the 5:09 mark of the opening quarter

Hawaii/Polynesia fumbled on its very next offensive snap and the Mainland again capitalized with a Nick Tausch (Jesuit High School) 37-yard field goal that put Mainland up, 9-0. Ward’s 52-yard catch down the sideline made it a 16-0 game by halftime.

Hawaii/Polynesia finally got on the board with 5:02 remaining in the game when Corey Neilsen (Gahr High School) found Robby Toma (Punahou School) in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown strike. Hawaii/Polynesia would have two more opportunities for a comeback after recovering an onside kick and picking off a Mainland pass. However, both of Hawaii’s drive stalled in the Mainland territory.

The Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl, in its first year, featured 40 of the nation’s top prep football players competing against a Hawaii team comprised of 38 players from across the State, three players from American Samoa, and nine mainland players with Hawaii ties.

GBB: Big start for 4A #3 HSE ends in 57-41 romp past Pendleton Heights

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

FISHERS – Due to getting stuck at HoosierAuthority.com world headquarters about 20 minutes longer than I had anticipated – and if anyone who’s ever known me could have a dime for every time THAT’S happened … – I arrived a bit tardily for the Dec. 9 girls basketball game between Class 4A unbeatens Pendleton Heights and Hamilton Southeastern.

Upon turning the corner and entering the HSE gym, my jaw nearly hit the floor. With the first-quarter clock inching toward 2:00, the scoreboard read 20-2. And evidently it had been reading that for quite awhile as the third-ranked host Royals (8-0) scored on their first six possessions before coasting to a 57-41 victory.

The win marks Southeastern’s eighth in a row over the Arabians in the last eight years, the previous four coming by margins of 19, 18, 34, and 21. But this was supposed to be different as Pendleton Heights (4-1) entered this affair undefeated for the first time since that 70-49 defeat in 2004.

The Royals’ ridiculously fast start, however, foiled that plan.

“Great teams bury you in short spurts of play,” said eighth-year Pendleton Heights coach Shari Doud. “That’s what happened to us tonight.

“Their defensive pressure affected our outside shooting. After that, we outplayed ’em!”

Technically, yes. But on the couple of occasions where the Arabians seemed poised to possibly make a run to cut their deficit to single digits, Southeastern responded with another burial spurt.

A 6-1 Heights run sliced a 25-9 game down to a manageable 26-15 score at halftime. But the Royals hit their first five shots of the third quarter (and quite easily, one might add, on a pair of wide-open 3-pointers from 5’10” sophomore Cathy Doyle, a pair of bunnies by 6-foot junior Kelsey Lamb, and another layin from 6-foot senior Paige Smith) to blow the lead back out to 38-19.

When Arabians’ 5’8” sophomore guard Hannah Douglas subsequently canned a pair of threes and HSE went cold for two minutes, the Royals scored on a three-point play by 5’10” senior Courtney Osborn, a putback from Smith, and a three at the third-period buzzer by Osborn that all but ended it at 46-27.

“We were kinda feeling the pressure but knew if we turned it on, we could put ’em away,” said Osborn, an Indiana All-Star candidate who finished with a game-high 19 points plus six rebounds and five assists. “Our defense created a lot of turnovers, and we ran the floor extremely well.”

Southeastern shot 54 percent for the game – an even 50 (11 of 22) in the first half and 57 (12 of 21) in the second. Osborn was joined in double figures by Smith (14 points on stellar 7-of-9 shooting) and Lamb (10 points and a team-high eight rebounds).

After the Royals’ blazing start, it seemed that Pendleton’s only possible route to recovery was at the free throw line – five of the Arabians’ first seven points came on 5-of-6 shooting from the stripe, and they reached the bonus with 6:14 still to play in the opening half.

But instead of working the ball inside and trying to get HSE in foul trouble while climbing back into it with the clock stopped, Pendleton started pulling up from downtown and missing with regularity.

The Arabians clanged five 3-point attempts over four possessions before 5’10” junior guard Mur Hagerman’s bomb finally found the mark 1:56 ahead of the half to start that aforementioned 6-1 run. And the only free throw that followed 5’10” senior forward Amanda Gaskin’s pair at 6:14 came from Gaskin with 53.3 seconds to play before the break that ended the run.

Doud said her Arabians were simply trying to take what the Royals’ defense was giving them.

“You just have to give a bunch of credit to Southeastern’s defense,” Doud said.

Added Osborn: “Our posts – Paige, Sage (Sullivan, a 5’10” senior), Kelsey, and Kristi (Sannella, a 5’11” senior) – did a great job of defending them.”

Yesh. For the game, Pendleton Heights shot just 33 percent. The Arabians’ debilitating first half ended at a dismal 20 percent (4 of 20), including a 1-of-10 effort from outside the 3-point arc.

Hagerman struggled through a 5-for-15 shooting night (2 of 9 from downtown) in tying Douglas for team-high honors with 12 points, while Gaskin added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. The Arabians next host Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Delta (3-5) Dec. 11.

Next for HSE, meanwhile, is a unique Friday 6 p.m./Saturday noon back-to-back challenge.

First up Dec. 12 is the girls portion of a girls/boys doubleheader battle against Hoosier Crossroads Conference rival Noblesville (3-3). Then it’s a noon showdown with 2A top-ranked and three-time defending state champion Heritage Christian (5-0) in another battle of unbeatens that will kick off the annual Circle City Classic at Southport Fieldhouse.

“We’re just worried about Noblesville first,” Osborn said. “But it should be two great games.”
