A 24-8 third-quarter blitz by the Rough Riders opened up what was a close battle between the OIA and BIIF runner-ups.

Mikela Thoemmes scored inside and out, finishing with 26 points on 11-for-14 shooting, as Roosevelt (17-10) advanced. Joshy Noga tallied 12 points and Thoemmes added 11 rebounds and key ballhandling as the Rough Riders dealt with Waiakea’s pressure defense.

Nicole Ramirez scored 11 points and had eight boards for Roosevelt, which will face No. 4 seed Lahainaluna tonight at Farrington.

University of Idaho-bound Kanisha Bello led Waiakea (12-10) with 17 points and Kamie Imai added 14 points and 10 boards.

“We knew they were big and that they would pack it inside. We weren’t expecting Kela to be stepping out and shooting 3s,” said Bello, who played with Thoemmes last year on the Hawaii Select team. “She’s a force.”

Ah Yen boosts Baldwin over Moanalua, 41-36

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Baldwin girls basketball team was counting on Shauna Ah Yen last night and as usual, she found a way to cash in on offense.

Ah Yen proved she is the Bears’ best player against Moanalua and was confident even when things appeared to be falling apart.

Ah Yen was 10-of-12 from the field and finished with 20 points as Baldwin held off Moanalua, 41-36, in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division I State Championships at Kaimuki High.

“Shauna is our go-to person and she makes our team really go,” said Baldwin coach Angel Kalehuawehe. “We wouldn’t be in the situation we are in right now (without her). She is our No. 1 person to go to.”

Baldwin, the Maui Interscholastic League runner-up, will play No. 2 seed Konawaena, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, today at 5 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

Kahuku no sure thing in tournament
By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin
Feb. 24, 2009

One of the smaller schools in the Oahu Interscholastic Association has a big appetite for championships.

Kahuku’s move from Division I to Division II caught plenty of fans, coaches and players by surprise. There’s no surprise, though, that the Red Raiders are the top seed in the D-II portion of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships, which tips off today.

For most of the season, Kahuku was outranked in the Star-Bulletin Top 10 by only one other OIA team: Farrington. Despite a roving lineup hit by the occasional absence of club volleyball players on tournament trips, Kahuku went 20-2 while employing a frenzied pace reminiscent of the Showtime Lakers.

Kahuku, though, is no easy favorite. One of its nonconference losses came against Sacred Hearts, which was a top-10 team in early January. Sacred Hearts, which is in D-I, has similar peers in the state D-II field.

Punahou, Kahuku awarded top seeds

Honolulu Advertiser Staff
Feb. 23, 2009

Punahou and Kahuku earned the No. 1 seeds for this week’s Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai’i High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Championships.

Defending champion Punahou is the top seed in the Division I bracket. The Buffanblu (11-1), the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champions, receive a first-round bye and face the winner of tomorrow’s Kalani-‘Aiea game in Wednesday’s quarterfinals at Farrington.

Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Konawaena (12-0) is seeded second, followed by O’ahu Interscholastic Association champion Farrington (18-1) and Maui Interscholastic League champion Lahainaluna (14-0).

First-round games begin tomorrow at Farrington and Kaimuki. The championship game is Friday at 7 p.m. at the Blaisdell Arena.

Kahuku, the OIA White champion, is the No. 1 seed in Division II. The Red Raiders (14-1) receive a first-round bye and face the winner of tomorrow’s Kapa’a-St. Andrew’s game in Wednesday’s quarterfinals at Kalani.

EDITORIAL: Perfection achieved at the Mt. Vernon Regional

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

FORTVILLE – On the afternoon of Feb. 21 at Mt. Vernon High School in Fortville, all was right with the world – at least the world of high school sports. Once in awhile, I am reminded of just exactly why we do what we do at Hoosier Authority, and the Class 3A Regional 7 was one of those moments.

Everything that is good about high school sports was on display in full view of nearly 3,000 people.

Sixth-ranked Crawfordsville was the new kid on the block. The Athenians were appearing in their first girls basketball regional ever. The sectional title they won last week was more than a mere tournament victory. It was validation for a senior class that kept striving even after three years of gut-wrenching disappointment.

The Athenians are coached by Darren Haas, a man who not only has genuine affection for his players, but who also understands that the heart of a competitor beats just as hard in a 5’3’’ girl as in a 6’9” boy. That would be Lexi Stevens, a throwback pure point guard whose greatest skill is simply beating your brains in by whatever means necessary.

Next was Batesville, a community that personifies small-school excellence. A persuasive argument could be made that, over the past decade, Batesville has been the best athletic department in Indiana. The Bulldogs are good year after year at every sport in which they compete. More importantly, they do it with modesty, class, and character.

The No. 12 Bulldogs were outsized in every way in their game with Crawfordsville, except one: heart.

Also on hand was Roncalli, the private school that accepts nothing less than excellence from its teams and supporters. It is a private school that does things the right way. The Rebels were guided by first-year coach Sara Reiderman, whose enthusiasm and belief in her players kept them in a game they frankly had no business being in down the stretch.

Finally, there was Rushville, a community that embodies the history and heritage of Indiana high school basketball as much as any in the state. The Lions were supported by a crowd that made you want to shout, “That’s what it is all about!” Rushville fans and players alike understand what it means to wear a Lions jersey.

More importantly, they respect what it takes. Coach Melissa Marlow instills pride and tradition in Rushville basketball every time she steps on a court.

The teams were great. The coaches were genuine role models. The crowd was large, loud, and proud. The games were exciting and competitive. The smiles were jubilant, and the tears were real.

In short, it was everything those of us who champion Indiana basketball hold sacred. If any of you have matured to the point that you can no longer be moved by what I witnessed Saturday, you aren’t grown up.

You’re just old.

Punahou rules the mat
By Paul Honda
Honolulu Star Bulletin

Even at ancient Punahou School, there are still feats and firsts.
Last night, the Buffanblu captured the boys and girls team titles at the Chevron/HHSAA State Wrestling Championships at Neal Blaisdell Arena.

The boys won their third state crown in a row – coming after a 28-year drought – while the Punahou girls took their first crown.

“This group over the last five, six years has really gotten it,” Punahou coach Matt Oney said. “Both the boys and girls winning it, that’s really important for our program. We practice as one team and the girls give to the boys, and the boys give to the girls.”

Punahou’s boys won by a decisive margin, accumulating 222 points. Kaiser followed with 164 and Lahainaluna placed third with 111. Kamehameha (107) and Pearl City (67) rounded out the top five.

The Buffanblu girls had a tougher go, racking up 150.5 points to Kahuku’s 122. Campbell (87), Aiea (86.5) and Pearl City (81.5) followed.

Punahou is just the second school to win girls and boys wrestling championships in the same year. Kahuku was the first back in 2006.

The Punahou girls won their first Chevron/HHSAA State Wrestling Championships yesterday, and a couple of their wrestlers redeemed themselves in their senior years.

Punahou won with 150.5 points, defending champion Kahuku was second with 122 and ‘Aiea was third with 87 at Neal Blaisdell Arena.

The Buffanblu’s Jenny Ojerio (140 pounds) and Ilima-Lei Macfarlane (155) won state championships, and Punahou had top 5 finishes in seven of the 11 weight classes.

“I’m so proud of them,” said Punahou coach Matt Oney. “They’ve worked hard for lots and lots of years. We’ve had a really solid group of girls, but just not enough of them numbers-wise. This year, they really, really did a great job. Young and old came together.”

Oney added he had 15 girls on the roster, and 10 of them qualified for the state tournament.

Ojerio and Macfarlane, both four-year letterwinners, won their first state titles.
