GBB: Reporting gone bad, but a day that went perfectly

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
INDIANAPOLIS – Those of you who are frequent readers of HoosierAuthority.com know I spent nearly 20 years coaching basketball in Indiana. What fewer people know is that I have a three-year-old daughter, and a wife who travels a great deal for business.
All of those factors mingled Nov. 21 to create one of those days that parents remember for a lifetime.
I planned to cover the Ben Davis Shootout on Saturday evening. The girls basketball doubleheader featured four of the state’s best teams – Class 4A top-ranked defending state champion Ben Davis hosting 3A top-ranked defending state champ Fort Wayne Elmhurst, 4A third-ranked Mooresville tackling 1A top-ranked defending state champion Fort Wayne Canterbury.
My wife informed me Saturday morning, however, that she, nor anyone else, could watch the daughter that evening. I faced a significant dilemma: I could pass on covering the event, or I could take my daughter with me to the games.
I quickly retooled my thinking and decided this was a great opportunity for my daughter to view her first real basketball game. That, of course, is a big highlight for a dad who spent most of his life involved in the game.
But it was going to play havoc with my ability to cover the games from a reporting standpoint.
There was no way my little girl was going to remain interested for two full games, nor was she likely to stay quiet when I tried to do video interviews after the games. So, I decided I would arrive for the second half of the first game and stay through the first half of the second.
This meant I couldn’t write the stories I wanted, but I could shoot highlight videos. And you folks like those at least as much, anyway.
I spent most of the afternoon building up the adventure to my daughter. Just before we left, I gave her the stern, lengthy lecture about behaving because Daddy was going to be working. We then departed for Ben Davis.
As they say, so much for the best-laid plans of mice and men. When we arrived at the gymnasium, I turned to find that I had been so wrapped up in lecturing the girl on her expected behavior that I left the house with neither my video camera nor my reporter’s notebook.
Obviously, Daddy wasn’t going to be covering anything at these games. Still, it was an opportunity to start my daughter’s love affair with basketball, and I wasn’t about to miss that. We headed into the gym.
After passing through admission thanks to the very sweet nature of the ticket taker, we immediately headed for the … popcorn stand. It seemed the smell got to the girl very quickly! Of course, popcorn turned into popcorn, coke, and some candy.
Nonetheless, we eventually headed into the upper level of the arena.
Once seated, I began to explain all of the things she was seeing. I explained how the players were trying to put the ball through the ring on that thing hanging from the ceiling, and how they did that by “shooting” the ball. I also explained how when one player threw the ball to another, it was called a “pass.”
I explained defense, rebounding, officials, coaches, and anything else I could simplify to the level of a three-year-old. It all fell on the deafest of ears.
Instead, we went through the phase of her putting her hands over her ears every time the horn sounded because it was too loud. Then we went through the phase of her doing it just because she thought it was cute.
We also went through the “I am only interested in the cheerleaders” phase, the “I want to climb up the bleachers” phase, the “I want to climb down the bleachers” phase, and every other phase that kept her from paying any attention to what was happening on the court.
By the end of the third quarter, I was becoming quite disappointed. By early in the fourth, I gave up any notion that she was going to pay any attention to the game. By midway through the final quarter, I had struck up a conversation with a guy sitting a couple of rows up and was just making sure she didn’t get lost before it was time to go home.
It was a crushing blow for a father who had hoped to baptize his daughter in the holy waters of basketball.
Then it happened. With less than a minute to play, one of the teams grabbed a rebound and ran a picture-perfect fast break culminating in a layup at the other end. I turned to my daughter to tell her to put on her jacket, only to see her bright blue eyes shining up at me.
“Daddy, that was a really good pass.”
There has never been a more perfect day.
NOTE: I did have my managing editor track down some info on the games; that appears below …
In 4A No. 1 Ben Davis’ 73-38 victory over 3A No. 1 Fort Wayne Elmhurst, the host Giants (3-0) raced out to a 33-9 halftime advantage and made 29 field goals to only 10 for the Trojans (2-1). Dee Dee Williams led Ben Davis with 17 points and was joined in double figures by Bria Goss and Jazmine Windham (11 each).
In 3A No. 3 Mooresville’s 61-51 against 1A No. 1 Fort Wayne Canterbury, the victorious Pioneers (4-0) enjoyed a similar field goal edge at 25-13. Meagan Callaway led all scorers with 26 points and was joined in double digits by Jama Sharp (12), while Tabitha Gerardot had 21 for the Cavaliers (1-1).

GBB: 2A #5 Taylor goes three overtimes to upset #1 Oak Hill, 70-67

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

KOKOMO – It took just two games for the girls basketball season to reach the same fever pitch it enjoyed at last year’s state finals. Class 2A top-ranked Oak Hill traveled to 2A No. 5 Taylor Nov. 17, and the result was an absolute classic.

Think I am exaggerating? Try this on for size. There were three overtimes, two buzzer-beaters, two incredible performances, one mountain climbed, and one test of character passed. That isn’t bad for one game, you know.

In the end, the host Titans came away with a 70-67 victory and a huge monkey off their backs.

Oak Hill rolled into this one at far less than full strength. The Golden Eagles, who lost a 60-58 overtime heartbreaker a year ago to Heritage Christian for the 2A state championship, were without starters 6-foot junior forward Marissa Coolman (injured hand) and sophomore guard Shirley Larson (injured foot).

Soon after the tip, they were also minus post player Ashley Pickering, the 6’4’ senior who picked up two quick fouls and sat the rest of the half. Nonetheless, they showed the composure of champions and led at the first stop 14-9.

That lead soon evaporated under a barrage of 3-pointers by Taylor’s Shelby Wall. The senior sniper hit six first-half treys and brought the Titans to a 26-26 tie at the intermission.

Wall’s 18 first-half points had been offset by the biggest of the Golden Eagles’ weapons, Miss Basketball candidate Courtney Moses, a 5’7” senior guard who had 16 of her own.

Two developments in the third quarter had Oak Hill fans breathing a little easier. First, Pickering returned to the court and began to rule the boards. Second, Moses changed the way she was defending Wall, forcing her to put the ball on the floor more than in the initial 16 minutes.

Wall had taken 12 shots in the first two quarters, but she began to have difficulty finding shot opportunities in the third stanza. Still, at quarter’s end, the Golden Eagles were leading by only three, 42-39.

That lead immediately evaporated in the early moments of the fourth period. That’s when Taylor stepped up the defensive pressure and stagnated the Oak Hill offense.

The Titans grabbed the lead at 44-43 and showed no intention of giving it back. They led the entire quarter and were in position at the foul line to put the game away in the final minutes.

But they struggled from the line and, as is always the case, you can never give a champion a second chance. The Eagles’ Pickering and Titans’ Wall traded free throws in the final seconds, leaving Taylor with a 53-50 lead with just under five seconds to play.

Oak Hill had the ball under its own basket, and you can guess what happened next. The inbounds play was drawn for Moses, and she responded with a buzzer-beating three from the left wing to send the contest into overtime.

Moses opened the extra session with a pair of free throws to put the Eagles ahead. It set up the critical sequence in the game.

Moments later, the Oak Hill star was in the open court and headed to the hoop. The result was an offensive foul – her fifth. Taylor later scored to send the game into a second overtime.

More importantly, the only Oak Hill player who could begin to stop Wall was now permanently on the bench. Most thought it would be enough for Taylor to prevail.

So much for what people think.

Oak Hill role-playing guards sophomore Bekah Hochstedler and junior Lorrie Newhouse each made big plays in the opening moments of the second overtime, and the depleted Eagles were suddenly up 60-55. Wall saw to it that it didn’t last.

She hit a bucket to close Taylor within 60-57, then hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to cut the lead to 63-60. After a flurry at the other end, the Titans found themselves with the ball and roughly six seconds to play.

Oak Hill coach Todd Law found himself facing the eternal question: Do you play it out or do you foul because you are up three points? Law chose to play it straight and, in retrospect, paid the price.

The Titans got the ball to Wall, who attracted nearly the entire Golden Eagles defense. She managed to spot Courtney Schroeder on the left side of the arc, and the junior drained the three at the buzzer to send the contest into the third overtime.

Four Wall free throws and a bucket from post player Kaitlynne Smith were enough to seal the verdict for Taylor in the third extra session. Oak Hill was out of miracles as well as options as Pickering was the only serious offensive weapon on the floor, and she missed a trey in the closing seconds that would have tied it one more time.

Wall ended the evening with 38 points and a huge smile. Moses had 28 before exiting in the first overtime.

The Titans defeated Oak Hill for the first time in four years and set up huge anticipation for a possible rematch in the sectional. Oak Hill found character in its bench that will simply make the Golden Eagles even stronger when they return to full strength.

Meanwhile, Wall and the Titans found they had other weapons with which to challenge Oak Hill at tourney time. Stay tuned, as this rematch will be worth the price of admission.

MARSHALL - Through their first two games, Crawfordsville's girls basketball team has yet to display their new offense.

But despite illness, nerves and a lack of comfort with the new scheme, the Athenians keep finding ways to win.

Senior
Alex Gasaway and junior Courtney Hamilton each scored 10 points apiece,
as the visiting Class 3A No. 7 Athenians pulled out a 41-33 victory
over Class A No. 9 Turkey Run.

Ninth-year Crawfordsville coach
Darren Haas acknowledged players still aren't comfortable with the
whole plan yet. But in the fourth quarter, they started to show a few
flashes of what they can do once they follow the plan.

"We were
out of position so much . . . We're still trying to put people in
places. Maybe it's my fault," Haas said. "We've got to get the ball
inside. It's similar to [our problems] last year. We have a new offense
out there and in two games we haven't shown our fans what it is."

By getting back to its inside game in the fourth quarter, Crawfordsville (2-0) held on to pull this win out.

They
went inside to their big three - Gasaway (5-feet, 10-inches), Hamilton
(5-11) and senior Betty Elliott (6-1) - and tried to get at least one
of them to touch the ball on every play.

With Turkey Run junior center Adrienne Francis (6-0) out with a boxer's fracture, the Athenians took advantage down low.

Elliott
only scored five points the entire game. But it was her hustle on the
boards and passing skills that really gave the Athenians a boost.

After
letting an eight-point lead slip away and tied at 27-27 after three
quarters, Crawfordsville opened the first three minutes of the fourth
quarter on an 8-0 run.

Senior Haley Grundy scored the first two
baskets, while Hamilton scored the final two. Elliott had a hand in two
of the baskets, with an assist on the first one (to Grundy) and the
last one (to Hamilton).

She also pulled down a rebound and tipped away a pass for a steal during the run.

Crawfordsville
took a 35-27 lead with less than five minutes remaining and Gasaway
sealed things up with two baskets in the final two minutes.

Gasaway
had missed most of the past week will a fever and Haas wasn't even sure
if she'd play. She didn't start but managed to go 5-of-11 from the
field.

Although Hamilton played well offensively, Haas said he
was disappointed with her defense. With her long arms, he'd hoped she'd
finish with a couple more steals. But he said she looked lost Tuesday
night.

"This was the first day [Alex] didn't have a fever," Haas
said. "We need to get comfortable back in our offense. Courtney and
Alex are not comfortable yet."

Meanwhile, a banged-up Turkey Run (1-3) team struggled with free-throw shooting and lack of legs in the fourth quarter.

The
Warriors made just 4 of 15 free-throw attempts (26.7 percent) and went
just 12 of 45 from the field (26.7 percent) in the game.

Junior Chelsea Newnum led Turkey Run with 10 points. Junior Jordan Hunt came off the bench to score nine.

"The
last four games we've been under 50 percent from the free-throw line,"
Turkey Run coach Sam Karr said. "Jordan had an ankle injury and was 50
percent. She was missing her quick first step. We had such a good
match-up with her. She just couldn't finish."

Class 4A Ben Davis, Fort Wayne Elmhurst (3A), Oak Hill (2A), and Fort Wayne Canterbury (1A) all stay at No. 1, while there is a fair amount of limited movement below them led by the ascensions of 2A Austin and 1A powers Oregon-Davis and Kouts:

•    4A: Jeffersonville swaps places with Mooresville in moving from third to second, Decatur Central bumps up two spots to sixth, and Bloomington South trades spots with Hamilton Southeastern in going from 10th to ninth.

•    3A: Plymouth moves up three places into a tie for fifth with holdover Benton Central, while Hamilton Heights rises four spots to eighth and Gibson Southern bumps up one to ninth.

•    2A: Austin ascends three positions to second, Taylor noses up one to fifth, Winchester does the same in moving to sixth, Winamac also rises one to seventh, Wabash jumps five spots to eighth, and Boone Grove leaps up seven places to 10th.

GBB: 4A #2 Mooresville throttles host North Central, 69-26

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
INDIANAPOLIS – Class 4A second-ranked Mooresville got off to an excellent start to the season Nov. 13 at North Central (Indianapolis), outscoring the Panthers 45-14 in the second half on its way to a shocking 69-26 blowout victory.
Six-foot-two senior center Maegan Callaway led the way with 16 points, while senior guards Sierra Chabra and senior forward Bailey Wellspring each added 10. A 25-2 run in the third period helped propel the Pioneers out to a 50-21 lead heading to the fourth after a slow start left the score just 24-12 at halftime.
“I was really impressed with our girls,” said 12th-year Mooresville coach Mark Hurt. “They got the lead early and never gave it up.
“North Central was short-handed. I think our experience showed tonight.”
The Panthers were indeed missing their marquee player, 6’4” sophomore forward Nariah Taylor, due to injury.
Mooresville entered the game seventh in the 4A preseason power ratings at 96.18, while the Panthers came in at 78.52, 39th in 4A.
