OFF THE BENCH: Key Games in State Basektball Tournament

Dave Kawada
dekawada@gmail.com
3-2-10

The fact that Iolani is the #1 seed told one thing – this D-I field will be wide open.  The Raiders and ILH rivals Kamehameha and Punahou played musical chairs atop the state rankings and league play.  Iolani is hot now but who says the Warriors or Buff N Blu couldn’t strike the burners this week.  I also never underestimate the title of defending state champs across the Warriors’ backs.

The quarterfinals will possibly determine what chair momentum is sitting in.  I predict Kamehameha getting by Campbell in the first round and meeting Moanalua on Thursday night at Mckinley.  The Menehune are also playing hot as they breezed through the OIA playoffs.  The key in this game, and in any game against an ILH team, is the ability to handle pressure.  The OIA champs have the guards to run the floor but can they be disciplined against the Warrior press.  If Chaz Bajet was still playing and not out with a season ending knee injury, my edge goes to the defending champs.  This is a toss up.

Outer island teams are always a wild card simply because they talent and toughness are really not known until you see them on the court.  Hilo, the only school to win a title and not reside on Oahu, may have a chance here.  The Vikings along with Waiakea have similar records.  This tells me that the better teams were in the East (BIIF plays a geographic schedule to cut costs on transportation) and that they beat up on each other.  Hilo should be playing against Punahou onThursday in the 5:00p game.  The Buff N Blu will have a size advantage on every team in the tournament but the perimeter shooting is suspect.  And the sophmore twin towers of Deforrest Buckner and Malik Johnson can **** you with offensive rebounds but can be handled in the low post with physical deny defense.  If Hilo can get hot from the outside and stretch the Punahou defense, they could pull the upset.

Iolani should advance through their side of the bracket at Radford.  But the Mckinley bracket games will determine who is on fire to take on a smallish Raider team.
