GBB Twin Lakes Inv.: 3A #14 Lebanon falls to 4A Cathedral, 44-31

By Eric Eaton
Staff Writer

MONTICELLO – Playing without senior guard Maggie Boyer, the state’s second-leading scorer, Class 3A No. 14 Lebanon dropped a 44-31 decision Dec. 27 to 4A Indianapolis Cathedral in the opening round of the Twin Lakes Invitational. Click

to watch highlights from the game!

Boyer, who averages 28.7 points per game, sat out the contest due to a bruised bone in her knee.

“I think it was a great experience for us,” said Lebanon coach Tracey Hammel, referring to her team playing without Boyer. “I think there were some things that obviously we would like to do a little bit better. But you know, we’ve not been in that situation, so it’s great for the kids to have to be in that situation and face that adversity.

“I think this is going to make everybody better today by being in this situation.”

Hammel said there is no timetable for Boyer’s return. According to the coach, the 6-footer will have to pass a series of tests from her doctor before she is allowed to return to competition.

In Boyer’s absence, senior Hannah Boeh led Lebanon in scoring against Cathedral with 12 points.

Cathedral (6-5), which got a game-high 19 points from junior Adrienno Sahm, advances to the Dec. 28 semifinals of the tournament where the Fighting Irish will play Logansport. The Berries defeated 3A No. 5 Evansville Memorial, 61-43, in the opening game of the tournament.

“She’s done a great job for us all year long,” Cathedral coach Linda Bamrick said of Sahm. “She’s been our leading scorer; she had 33 last night against Brebeuf (in the team’s 69-62 loss Dec. 26).

“I really thought tonight she took what they gave her. I thought she made good decisions on when to shoot, when to pass, and getting also the rest of her teammates into the flow of the game.”

Lebanon, which fell to 6-6, will face Evansville Memorial in the consolation bracket of the Twin Lakes Invitational. The tournament’s championship game will take place Dec. 28 at 8 p.m. ET.

Kamehameha, Iolani, 0-0 Tie

This was a BIG game. The Warriors were on top of the ILH, undefeated through yesterday’s game. The Raiders had lost once and were sitting in second place.

The weather was, well, pretty rotten. There was off and on rain and it looked like it was getting worse, not better. The field would be slow and the wind was blowing pretty hard.

In the first half, the Raiders had the wind at their backs and took advantage as they maintained a field position advantage from the opening gun.

But, no scoring. 0-0 at the half.

In the second half, the Warriors had the wind at their backs and they came out with a new found fire. All of a sudden the ball was staying in front of the Raiders net for extended periods of time.

The Raiders defense held, though, and the Warriors also couldn’t score. The Raiders actually had the better scoring opportunities just missing on a few crosses.

With five minutes left, Raider Ian Watson was red carded. This meant the Raiders would have to play short handed the rest of the way. The 10 vs 11 actually looked pretty even and the game ended in a scoreless tie.

GBB Hall of Fame: 4A #14 TH South pounds Greenfield, Lapel

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

NEW CASTLE – Class 4A No. 14 Terre Haute South cruised to a pair of easy girls basketball victories Dec. 27 at New Castle Fieldhouse, rolling past Greenfield-Central and Lapel en route to the championship at the 24th City Securities Hall of Fame Classic. Six-foot-three junior center Dragana Grbic was named the tournament’s most valuable player after a dominating all-around performance for the Braves in the final.

The Braves (10-3), still smarting from a 80-54 drubbing at Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference foe 4A No. 2 Ben Davis six days earlier, made up for it by clobbering their two opponents by a combined 65 points. Here’s a review of the four games held at the “World’s Largest and Finest High School Fieldhouse” …

Championship: 4A No. 14 Terre Haute South 69, 2A No. 5 Lapel 29
Lapel junior guard Hillary Guion’s 3-pointer with 5:02 left in the opening period drew the Bulldogs within two at 7-5, but from that point until two minutes remained in the third quarter it was all Terre Haute South as the Braves went on a 42-8 run to put the championship to bed.

The Braves outscored Lapel 23-4 in the second quarter for a 37-11 halftime lead and 22-6 in the third period to go up 59-17 heading to the fourth. The lead grew as big as 46 points at 63-17 and 65-19 before Terre Haute South coach Alan Maroska finally pulled his starters with about three minutes to play.

The second quarter for key for the Braves, who scored on 10 of their 14 possessions. Lapel, meanwhile, hit two of its first four shots before missing its last six (all on one-and-out possessions) and turning the ball over four times.

Terre Haute South simply dominated the glass early on, outrebounding the Bulldogs 25-13 over the first 16 minutes as Grbic led the way with nine boards.

Grbic, in fact, was a monster, blocking five shots in the first quarter alone and scoring 10 points on short-range shots across the second and third periods. She finished the final with a game-high 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting and registered a double-double with 12 rebounds, six at each end.

Grbic also dished out three assists, with all three baskets easy layups.

“That’s just a presence that’s hard to offset, and it really opens up the outside,” Maroska said of Grbic, whose post presence allowed the Braves to go 8 of 16 from behind the 3-point arc. “Her and Tessa (Johnson) really understood the give-and-go.”

Indeed. Two of Grbic’s three assists went to Johnson, the 5’10” junior forward who joined 5’9” junior guard Krista Smith in double figures as each scored 14 points. (Johnson just missed a second South double-double with nine rebounds.) Smith and Johnson each attempted 10 shots, with Smith nailing six and Johnson five.

It was the kind of night for the Braves, who shot 52 percent (15 of 29) in the first half and 61 percent (14 of 23) in the second. Lapel (11-2), on the other hand, struggled throughout in shooting just 28 percent (13 of 46), including a woeful 5-of-25 effort in the first half.

The Bulldogs did not help themselves by consistently hurrying shots, and they were a frigid 3 of 18 from 3-point range. Junior guard Julie Miller was the only Lapel player to breach a half-dozen points, leading the Bulldogs with nine.

“We knew they had more rest (Lapel played in the day’s first game, Terre Haute South in the second),” Maroska said. “But we had more quickness and size, and we can shoot it from the perimeter.”

The Braves’ talented trio of Grbic, Smith, and Johnson were named to the All-Tournament Team, as was Lapel’s Guion.

“The third time’s the charm,” said Maroska, whose Braves came up short twice before at New Castle. “We thought we shoulda won it in 1998 (when Terre Haute South fell to Shyra Ely-led Ben Davis, 66-64, in the final), and we had an unfortunate circumstance in 2002 (when the Braves ran into Katie Gearlds-led Beech Grove in a 69-33 morning loss).

Consolation: Greenfield-Central 59, Huntington North 53 (OT)
After playing early games in which each team was virtually out if it by halftime, Greenfield-Central and Huntington North both had golden opportunities to win the third-place game in regulation. But as was the theme of the day, each failed from the free throw line in the last 10 seconds before the Cougars finally prevailed in overtime.

This one was tight throughout, with Huntington North holding slim leads of 13-9, 24-23, and 36-34 at the first three stops. But Greenfield-Central (8-4) heated up in the fourth quarter, scoring a game-high 15 points in the period and taking a 49-45 lead, ironically, on a pair of converted free throws with 48.8 seconds to play.

Huntington North (6-5) would answer, however, on a short bank shot from sophomore forward Taylor Foley at :35.6. After Greenfield could not increase its lead, the Vikings tied it at 49 on forward Liesl Davenport’s strong drive to the bucket. The freshman could have given Huntington North the lead on the subsequent and-one free throw, but she missed.

Compounding that disappointment was Davenport’s bumping foul on Greenfield senior guard Jordan Lewis some 20 feet from the basket with just 1.6 ticks on the clock. But Lewis missed both chances to ice the game, and it was off to OT.

The Cougars would never trail in the extra four-minute session, pulling away from a narrow 53-52 lead by (irony alert!) canning all six of their double-bonus free throws over the final 35 seconds. Greenfield fared better from the stripe in this one, going 22 of 33 while Huntington North self-destructed with a 9-of-21 effort.

And that relative success from the line was critical as both teams show in the low .300s from the field in the game, with Greenfield hitting 31 percent (18 of 58) and Huntington North only slightly better at 33 percent (21 of 63). The second half was especially devastating for the Vikings, who suffered from 2-point range (11 of 32), from behind the arc (0 for 8), and at the line (7 of 19) in undercutting their 54-41 advantage on the boards.

Greenfield-Central finished with two scorers in double figures – Lewis (18 points to go along with seven rebounds) and sophomore forward Cierra Hall (14 points). Sophomore guard Kelsey Bryant, meanwhile, added nine points to go with a team-high eight rebounds.

Huntington North, on the other hand, squandered a pair of double-doubles with the loss. Senior forward Katie Hackney went for a game-high 21 points and added 13 rebounds, while Foley finished with 14 points and a Classic record-tying 19 rebounds, 10 of them at the offensive end.

Lewis was named to the All-Tournament Team, as was Hackney.

Game 1: 2A No. 5 Lapel 53, Huntington North 41
Lapel jumped out to a 27-15 halftime lead and shot nearly twice as well as Huntington North from the field in taking the day’s opening contest. The Bulldogs converted on 19 of 39 (49 percent) from the field, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range, while Huntington North suffered from 25-percent accuracy (13 of 53) that included an abysmal 3-of-20 effort from downtown.

After falling behind by 16 points after three quarters (39-23), the Vikings nearly doubled their final output with 20 points in the fourth quarter. But 8-percent shooting (1 of 13) from behind the arc erased any hopes of a spectacular comeback.

Lapel benefited from a balanced scoring attack (three players in double digits), while Huntington managed only one. Guion and senior forward Kayla Skaggs led the Bulldogs with 12 points apiece, while junior guard/forward Elizabeth Jennings added 10. Senior forward Emily Burnworth paced Huntington North with a game-high 16 points.

Game 2: 4A No. 14 Terre Haute South 68, Greenfield-Central 43
Terre Haute South shot a blistering 60 percent (15 of 25) in the first half, including 4 of 6 from long range, in building a 40-24 halftime lead. The Braves stretched that to 24 points at 57-33 heading into the fourth and coasted the rest of the way.

Greenfield-Central was held to a frigid 26 percent (16 of 61) from the floor, including just 2 of 15 from 3-point land. That shooting shortcoming trumped a sizeable advantage (49-34) on the boards.

The Braves’ posted three players in double figures in the day’s second game as Smith (a game-high 21 points to go along with six steals), senior guard Megan Craft (19 points and 6-of-6 shooting from trifectaville), and Johnson (16 points) led the way.

For Greenfield, Lewis was the only player to reach double digits as she tallied a game-high 20 points along with eight rebounds and five steals. Bryant added nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Bizarre stat of the day
The four teams turned in a dreadful performance from the free throw line every game as the four games ended with a combined 78-of-152 (51 percent) effort from the stripe. Included in that clangfest were three sub-.500 outputs: both finals teams (Terre Haute South was 3 for 12, Lapel 0 for 2) as well as Huntington North (9 for 21 in the consolation game).

Strangely, all four teams came into the Classic averaging between 66.7 and 68.6 percent. Don’t be surprised if a lot of girls are staying after practice next week to work out their unguarded 15-foot kinks.

The wrapping paper has yet to be thrown away but it is time for more high school boy’s basketball as the busy early season of tournaments enters the final week.  The Moanalua Na Menehune/Reebok Holiday Classic tipped off its first day with 16 teams playing at the Moanalua High School Gym. The Tournament will continue through Saturday with games starting at 9:00a.

The host team Moanalua Menehune under 2nd year Head Coach Greg Tacon took on Iolani II in their first game.  The Menehune will be looking at returning point guard Steve Austin to guide them this year into the OIA season and post season play.  The Menehune got off to a blazing start and never looked back in defeating the Raiders 72-17.

Scoring power came from 6-3 sophomore Marcus Monroe who had a game high 20 points.  Defensively the Raiders could not get good looks at the basket and were faced with constant pressure.  Matt Koyama had 5 points and Kevin Serai and Jefferey Sakamoto had 4 points each.

Moanalua will play at 6:00p on Thursday.  Iolani II will play in the consolation round at 12:00n.

GBB: Week 8 lineup

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

According to the Sagarin power ratings through Dec. 22, there are 11 big girls basketball games on the agenda for Week 8 of the 2007-08 season, with more likely to come later in the week depending on how all the early tournament matchups go. Here’s a look at those marquee showdowns with assistance from John Harrell’s Indiana high school basketball website …

Thursday, Dec. 27
Five biggies …

2A No. 4 Austin (9-1) vs. Connersville (8-1)

GBB Brebeuf Shootout: #10 Norwell upsets top-ranked Wawasee

By Bret Shambaugh
Contributing Writer

INDIANAPOLIS – Three teams ranked in the Top 10 of Class 3A, along with
3A defending state champion Brebeuf, participated in the Dec. 22
Brebeuf Shootout. Here’s a rundown of how all four games went …

Game 1: No. 7 Plymouth 74, Brebeuf 48
Plymouth used a 17-0 run in the first quarter to take a commanding 26-4
lead at the close of the first stanza. Although the Braves closed the
margin to 10 at intermission (33-23), the Pilgrims’ excellent trapping
defense that forced 29 Brebeuf turnovers was too much for the Braves to
overcome.

Plymouth was led in scoring by 6-foot junior standout Liz Smith’s
game-high 23 points. Seniors Jessica Centa and Brittany Payne also
reached double figures for Plymouth as the 5’8” Centa finished with 16
points, while Payne scored 11 and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Classmates Leslie Swihart and Jessica McMillen also made significant
contributions – the 5’6” Swihart had a game-high seven steals, and the
5’5” McMillen led all players with seven assists.

Brebeuf was led in scoring by junior Lauren Meadows and senior Paige
Thomas, who each scored 11 points. Six-foot sophomore Alexx Puckett was
also in double figures for the Braves with 10 points.

Game 2: No. 10 Norwell 58, No. 1 Wawasee 46
In what was a very physical dual, Norwell upset top-ranked Wawasee by
double digits. Northeast Hoosier Conference member Norwell outscored
Wawasee of the Northern Lakes Conference by a 15-4 count in the second
quarter, and foul trouble sacked the previously undefeated Warriors.

For the game, 33 fouls were whistled against Wawasee. All five
Warriors’ starters fouled out in the final stanza as Norwell shot 46
free throws in the game, converting on 25. Wawasee, meanwhile, only
attempted 11 free throws, making eight. Finally, Wawasee compounded its
difficult early afternoon by shooting only 31 percent from the floor.

Norwell placed three players in double figures. The Knights were paced
by their junior standout trio of Kylie Dial (a game-high 17 points),
Haley Chaney (13), and Andrea Vogel (10).

The Warriors were led in scoring by 5’8” junior Taylor Goshert, who
finished with 15 points. Classmate Ashlee Ort scored 10 points, while
junior guard Brennan McAdams had a game-high 10 assists.

Game 3: No. 7 Plymouth 48, No. 10 Norwell 43
Plymouth opened the 6 p.m. showdown of morning winners with a 12-0 run
in defeating Norwell. With both teams feeling the effects of their
respective first game of the day, neither shot over 40 percent from the
floor, and they were a combined 5 of 32 from behind the 3-point arc.

Plymouth’s aforementioned hustling and trapping defense, in fact,
limited the Knights to just 23-percent shooting. Fatigue is a factor in
any game that witnesses 49 fouls and 65 free throws attempted. Neither
team, it seemed, was ever able to establish any rhythm following that
initial Pilgrim burst.

Plymouth (10-2) was once again led in scoring by Smith’s game-high 16
points. Centa, who completed the two games by going a sparkling 13 of
18 from the floor, was also in double figures again with 10 points.

Norwell (10-2) was led by Dial and Chaney, who scored 11 points each.

Game 4: No. 1 Wawasee 46, Brebeuf 43
The rematch of the 2007 3A state Championship game had a different
result this time as Wawasee salvaged its Indianapolis trip by ruining
the host’s day. The difficulties of two games in a day were seen at the
free throw line for these two squads as Wawasee missed nine of 17 from
the stripe while Brebeuf missed 10 of 18.

Senior Kalyn Lantz paced Wawasee (8-1) with 10 points. The 5’6 Lantz was the only Warrior to reach double figures.

The Braves (4-7) placed three players in double figures, led by the
5’7” Meadows’ game-high 12 points. Senior Callie Curry scored 11
points, while Puckett finished with 10.

Plymouth’s Pilgrims may have gained the most from this day of
doubleheader basketball, their seniors gaining the confidence needed to
make a run in February. Norwell, meanwhile, learned that poor shooting
rarely overcomes hard-nosed play. Wawasee realized that on any given
Saturday, unfortunate results may occur. Finally, Brebeuf is still
recovering from the graduation of 2007 Miss Basketball Ta’Shia Phillips.

GBB RANKINGS: Power poll + big games

By Colin Altevogt
Girls Basketball Coordinator

Tournament time is upon us this week between Christmas and New Year’s. With many of the best teams playing two or even three games in a day, we could see some great matchups in a short amount of time.

Beware of tired squads, though. Doubling back is not the easiest task and could lead to some surprises around Indiana.

Only 11 teams have perfect records. Will South Bend Washington and Ben Davis both be undefeated if they meet in the Class 4A state finals? Can anyone on 1A defending champ Oregon-Davis’ schedule tame the Bobcats before the tournament?

Look out for the unbeaten watch, which launches next week. Till then, here’s HoosierAuthority.com power poll from Dec. 26:

1. South Bend Washington (11-0)
2. Ben Davis (10-0)
3. Heritage Christian (10-0)
4. North Central (Indianapolis) (9-1)
5. Hamilton Southeastern (9-1)
6. Oak Hill (11-0)
7. Wawasee (8-1)
8. Mooresville (9-1)
9. Carmel (9-2)
10. Bloomington South (9-1)

On the radar: Fishers (8-3), Fort Wayne Elmhurst (9-1), Fort Wayne South (10-1), Jay County (11-1), Lawrence North (9-2), Martinsville (7-2), Indianapolis Chatard (9-1), Jimtown (9-1), North Central (Indianapolis) (9-1), Oregon-Davis (12-0), Owen Valley (10-1)

This week’s big games include:

Thursday, Dec. 27:
Center Grove Tournament: An exciting potential championship game between red-hot Mooresville and the host Trojans seems likely, but Columbus East looks to spoil that while rebounding from a heartbreaking loss to rival Columbus North.

Friday, Dec. 28:
Twin Lakes Tournament (Day 2): The undefeated host school is looking at a likely semifinal matchup with highly-ranked giant Hamilton Southeastern.

Grant-Four Tournament (Day 1): Madison-Grant (7-3) tries its luck at taking down unbeaten Oak Hill.

Saturday, Dec. 29:
Terre Haute South @ Center Grove: Rescheduled MIC tilt between South and the resilient Trojans.

Summit Conference Tournament (Day 3): Semifinal matchups could include Fort Wayne South vs. Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran and Fort Wayne Luers vs. Fort Wayne Elmhurst. One-day gauntlet of Luers and possibly South could help formerly unbeaten Elmhurst get back on track after upset loss to Fort Wayne Snider.

Ben Davis Tournament: The 4A No. 2 host Giants face 4A No. 9 Bloomington North in a first-round game. A family final is possible between coaches Curt and Stan Benge if Ben Davis and Plainfield both win their opening contests (the Quakers have Anderson in the early game).
