Standings submitted by Chester Chee

In the OIA Boys East Division, the race is tight between leader Kalani at 5-3-1, and 2nd place Roosevelt, 4-2-2.  Kalaheo is right on Roosevelt’s tail at 4-4-1.

In the West, Mililani is running away with the lead with their undefeated record at 7-0-0.  Aiea is trying to hold on to 2nd place with a 5-3-2 mark.

Kalani is also doing well on the Girls side, leading the East with a terrific 8-0-1 record.  They have distanced themselves from 2nd place Kahuku at 5-3-1.

The race to watch for the girls is in the West with Pearl City (7-0-1), Kapolei(7-1-1), and Mililani(6-1-0) seperated by only 4 points.  Each ensuing game for each team will be critical.

In the ILH, the Kamehameha Boys at 5-0-1 are battling with Iolani at 4-1-1.  This race will be interesting particularly when they meet up again.

The Kamehameha girls have extended their lead over Punahou and Iolani.  The Lady Warriors at 7-0-0 will be looking to see who will win the 2nd spot as the Buff N Blu and Raiders, both 4-1-1, battle it out.

Kamehameha Defeat Maryknoll

December 28, 2007
David Kawada – Content Editor
dkawada@digitalsports.com

ILH Representative Kamehameha will play in the Championship Game Saturday in the Na Menehune Reebok Holiday Classic, as they defeat Maryknoll in the Semi Finals Friday night, 60-39.  The Championship Game will be at 7:30p at the Moanalua High School Gymnasium.

The Warriors have looked dominant in all of their Tournament games so for – a 37 point win over Kauai, and a 10-point victory over Laguna Beach,CA on Thursday night.

The full court pressure caused problems early for the Spartans and Coach Steve Hathaway.  Pressure led to turnovers, and subsequently easy buckets for Kamehameha.

Pii Mins and Kamakoa Downey-Jovanavich and company excecuted their multiple screen motion offense efficiently enough to get the open looks and wear down the Spartan defenders.

Head Coach Jesse Nakanishi will lead his team into the Championship Game agains the host Moanalaua Ne Menehune who have also had a steady road through the tournament.

Maryknoll and Mid Pacific will meet at 6:00p in the 3rd place game.

In semi-final action at the Na Menehune / Reebok Holiday Classic at Moanalua High School, the host Menehune hold off a late rally in the 2nd half to defeat the Owls of Mid Pacific 51-47.  Moanalua will play in the Championship Game Saturday at 7:30p against Kamehameha.

The #9 Na Menehune got off fast in the first quarter with point guard Stevie Austin and super sophomore Marcus Monroe working the offense smoothly.  Mid Pac would handle that initial surge and battle back in the 2nd quarter.

The Owls would really make a game of things in the 3rd quarter as Marcus Holyfield and company began to hit perimeter jump shots as well as get some transition baskets off of their defensive pressure.  Holyfield, only a junior, is described by one opposing coach as a “legitimate D-I prospect”.  So we will keep our eyes out for Marcus.

Key free throws and steady play eventually sealed the victory for the Menehune.  They will meet a Warrior team that has already defeated them once on the Kamehameha campus.  Head Coach Greg Tacon and his crew will be looking to event the record on Saturday.

The defending State Champions have 9 underclassmen on the roster and a potential returning starter no longer with the team.  Senior Chauncey Nicola is still recovering from a broken arm from football season.  What they do have is 6-2 sophomore Desmond Tautofi on the inside, and 5-8 junior guard David Taulang on the outside.   The team of underclassmen was able to step another step up on Coach Kelly Grant’s stepladder to success as they defeat Campbell 63-57, in the consolation bracket of the Na Menehune / Reebok Holiday Classic.

The 4-8 Bulldogs will play Saturday at 3:00p against Laguna Beach from California.  Campbell will play at 12:00n against University.  Saturday is the concluding day of the Tournament and the final tune up for teams before their respective league play starts next week.

Campbell took the lead early with a 14-10 lead after the 1st quarter.  But the Bulldogs started to get their fire lit in the 2nd, outscoring the Sabers 23-12, to take a 33-26 halftime lead.

Joseph Atimua helped to spark the early lead by the Sabers as he punched in 22 points on the night including 4 3-pointers.

Tautofi would begin to make his presence felt in the 2nd half, particularly in the paint as he posed a match up challenge for Campbell.  Tautofi would finish with 11 points as well as being a factor on the boards.
The Bulldogs began to pull away in the 3rd quarter then held off a Campbell rally in the 4th quarter for the victory.  David Taulang led the team with 19 points.  Gabriel Steitzel tossed in 11 points to be the 3rd Bulldog in double figures for points.

Terence Tafai scored 11 points for Campbell.  Michael Makinano added 10 points.

GBB Center Grove Tourney: 4A #10 Trojans prevail over Columbus East, 56-49

By Bubba Harnist
Staff Writer

GREENWOOD – For the last three years of the Center Grove Holiday Tournament, the championship game has pitted the host Trojans against Columbus East. In 2004-05 and again last season, the Olympians knocked off Center Grove. Two years ago, it was Center Grove winning over Columbus East.

The good news for Center Grove fans Dec. 27 was that the Trojans continued the pattern of winning every other year as Class 4A No. 10 Center Grove defeated Columbus East, 56-49, to capture its seventh championship in the nine-year history of the event.

Despite having played a game earlier in the day – Center Grove got 17 points from Price en route to a 57-34 win over Madison, while Columbus East got 15 points from both McKayla Barber and Brianna Layton in a 56-45 upset of 4A No. 4 Mooresville – both teams came out firing.

As baskets were exchanged at a rapid pace, Center Grove couldn’t its lead past three points, while Columbus East was fighting to get the lead for more than one possession at a time.

The Trojans pushed the lead to four with a free throw from Jordan Price with 1:39 left in the first quarter, and at the end of the period Center Grove held a three-point lead at 17-14 as the Trojans scored at least one point on their final seven possessions.

The second quarter was remarkably different, especially for Columbus East. Try this one on for size: The Olympians – the defending 4A state runner-up – scored exactly zero points in the period.

“The key was our defense the whole ball game,” said Center Grove coach Joe Lentz. “I thought we needed to step up the level of intensity from this morning, and we did. We are getting better and better defensively.”

Center Grove, however, didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard during the Olympians’ drought.

The Trojans didn’t get their first bucket of the second quarter until a successful jump shot by Kristen Gliesmann with 4:38 left. Over the next two minutes, Center Grove got a jumper from Katy Watson and a 3-pointer from Price before a very tired Columbus East team called a timeout trailing 24-14.

Luckily for East, the Trojans didn’t score over the final 2:33, and the Olympians’ deficit remained 10 at the intermission.

Two minutes into the third quarter, Center Grove pushed its lead to 13 at 29-16 on a three from Brittney Shaner. But Columbus East then turned up the pressure and reeled off nine points, including a four-point play, in 46 seconds to cut the deficit to four.

“They did a nice job of attacking us,” Lentz said. “We sometimes pushed it too hard, and they got us into a much more quick pace. We took some rushed shots and made some poor decisions.”

Not to be outdone, the Trojans reeled off six straight points to push the lead back to 10 at 35-25. The two team exchanged hoops over the final two minutes, but Columbus East was able to trim the deficit to two at 40-32 heading into the fourth.

Columbus East narrowed the deficit to four points two minutes into the final stanza, and again three minutes in. But Center Grove quickly pushed the lead back to six or eight. When Price hit one of two free throws with 2:11 to play, Center Grove led 50-44.

But the Olympians responded with a 3-pointer from Jordan Ogle and a layup from Shannon Van Horn to make it 50-49 with only 1:34 remaining. East then had a golden opportunity on the next possession when the O’s forced a missed shot by Center Grove.

But CG senior Emily Fergason grabbed the offensive rebound and scored to put the Trojans ahead by three and, after a Columbus East miss, Price hit two more free throws to extend the Trojans’ lead to 54-49. A turnover by Columbus East on its next possession sealed the Center Grove win.

With two wins on the day (the Trojans had defeated Madison in an opening-round game of the four-team tourney), Center Grove improves to 8-2 on the season. Gliesmann’s 18 points led the way while Priced added another 14 for the Trojans, whose next contest will be a huge Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference Dec. 29 home game against 4A No. 14 Terre Haute South.

“Mentally, it’s difficult (playing two games in one day), but we were up to the task today,” Lentz said. “This is still a young team – I like where we are going.

“We have some things to work on, but we have a really great opportunity to be great at the end.”

Leading the way for the Olympians (8-4) was Ogle with 19 points, while Stephanie Santos chipped in nine and Brianna Layton had eight. Next up for East is a Jan. 3 trip to Seymour for a Hoosier Hills Conference clash.

In the consolation game, Mooresville got three straight 3-pointers in the final 1:07 of the first half to blow open what had been a close game. That allowed Mooresville to build a 10-point lead over Madison, and the Pioneers went on to a 60-38 victory.

Madison used an 8-0 run early in the third quarter to get the deficit to nine, but Mooresville (10-2) quickly pushed the lead back to double digits and led 48-33 after three quarters. Leading the way for the Pioneers was freshman Jama Sharp with 24 points, while Meagan Callaway added 10.

Madison (3-9) was led by Sadie Bowling’s 15 points, while Nicole Goble chipped in 10.

GBB Twin Lakes Inv.: 4A #5 Hamilton SE dominates 2A #14 Taylor, 68-43

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

MONTICELLO – Junior Paige Smith scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds Dec. 27 as Class 4A No. 5 Hamilton Southeastern cruised into the semifinals of the Twin Lakes Invitational with a 68-43 rout of 2A No. 14 Taylor. Click
here
to watch highlights from the game!

Smith, who made 12 of 16 shots against the Titans, scored 16 of her team’s 22 second-half points.

“We didn’t think they could handle her in the post,” said Hamilton Southeastern coach Chris Huppenthal.

The Royals used a tremendous effort on defense during the game’s first half to grab a
36-21 lead at intermission, limiting Taylor to just 29 percent on 5-of-17 shooting from the field.

“We try to tell our kids the constant has always got to be on the defensive side of the ball,” Huppenthal said.

The second half saw Courtney Osborn, the Royals’ leading scorer at 17 points a game, foul out with 1:47 remaining in the third quarter. And while the junior finished four points shy of her average, her absence was viewed by Huppenthal to have been a positive on this night.

“She went out, and we had to play some kids without her on the floor – I think that was good experience for our kids,” said Huppenthal. “We’re trying to get some growth here through this tournament, and that was a good learning experience for our kids and a good situation for them to be in.”

Hamilton Southeastern, which improved to 10-1 on the season, will face 3A No. 2 Twin Lakes in the Dec. 28 semifinals of the tournament. The tournament host Indians downed Western, 73-47, in their opening-round game.

Taylor, which dropped to 7-5, will take on Western in the consolation bracket of the tournament.

The tournament’s championship game will take place Dec. 28 at 8 p.m. ET.

Here are results from Day 1, plus the remainder of the tournament schedule:
